The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the famous Moll Flanders &c

ondon- W Chetwood and T Edling], 1722 Book. Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A very scarce first edition of this celebrated novel by Daniel Defoe. One of Defoe's most famousworks, second only to Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders is a first-person picaresque novel purportedly written by the heroine herself. Very scarce. Only twocopies held in UK collections, one in the British Library, the other at Trinity College Cambridge. Collated:LackingTitle page but consistent with the first edition of 1722 and the only edition to have this pagination. A facsimile title page can be obtained if required. Title pagefor this edition states 1721, but thework was actually published in January of 1722. With the blank leaf to A8, almost always removed in rebinding. (Moore 446, ESTCT70314)In a contemporarybinding. Title page likely removed due to the notoriety of the work. Moll Flanders was written and published after Defoe had become a recognised and successful novelist. Though the work was originallypublished as if it were an autobiography, it was attributed to Defoe after his death. Partially based on the life of notorious London criminal Moll King, whom Defoe personally met in Newgate prison, Moll Flanders was a sensational novel in which the heroine manages to retain the sympathy of the reader despite her various trials and tribulations and her questionable morality. An important work, now part of the literary canon andkey in the development of the novel and an insight into social and cultural issues of the 17th and 18th century, particularly crime and punishment and the position of women in society. Condition: In original full calf binding. Externally, sound with rubbing. Bumping to extremities and loss to leather at extremities, head and tail of spine and joints. Frontjoint cracked and front hinge tender. Small ink signature to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places, particularly to page 387 whichis loosening slightly. Pagesslightlybrowned withlight spotting, usage marks andlight tidemarks to the earlypart of the work. Lackingtitle page. Overall: GOOD.

The Cambridge History of Iran in 7 Volumes (in 8 volumes, = alles).

Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag. Band 2 ohne Schutzumschlag, sonst sehr gut erhaltenes Exemplar des Standardwerks .Vollständige Inhaltsbeschreibung gerne auf Anfrage. // VOLUME 1, The Land of Iran. Edited by: W. B. Fisher. Volume I sets the physical stage for the human events which follow. In a sense it is a companion volume to the rest of the series. The whole volume is devoted to geography, geology, anthropology, economic life, and flora and fauna. -- VOLUME 2, The Median and Achaemenian Periods. Edited by: I. Gershevitch. The second volume describes the formation, in the sixth century BC, of the earliest multi-national empire, its administration, its confrontation with Greece, and its eventual dissolution under the impact of Alexander's conquest of Iran in 331 BC. -- VOLUME 3 Part 1 and 2, The Seleucid, Parthian and Sasanid Periods. Edited by: E. Yarshater. The third volume is an account of every aspect of Iranian civilisation from the death of Alexander in 323 BC to the advent of Islam in the seventh century AD. As additions to the general objectives of these volumes, Professor Yarshater has included in this volume chapters on the institutional, administrative, legal, numismatic, linguistic and literary aspects of the period and he further develops the scope of the volume by including studies of Iran's interaction with neighbouring societies, of Iran's mythical and legendary history, and of Iranian settlements outside the geographical boundaries of Iran and Afghanistan. -- VOLUME 4, The Period from the Arab Invasion to the Saljuqs. Edited by: R. N. Frye. It studies the gradual transition of Iran from Zoroastrianism to Islam, the uniting of all Iranians under one rule, the flowering into full magnificence of the Persian language, and the establishment of those other acts which were to flourish so brilliantly after the Mongol conquest. -- VOLUME 5, The Saljuq and Mongol Periods. Edited by: J. A. Boyle. Volume 5 is a survey of every aspect of the civilisations which flourished in the Iranian region between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries: the rise and decline of the Saljuqs, the Mongol invasion and the establishment of a Mongol regime which dominated the Middle East for more than a century. -- VOLUME 6, The Timurid and Safavid Periods. Edited by: Peter Jackson and Lawrence Lockhart. This volume covers the history of Iran from the collapse of the Il-Khanid empire (c. 1335) to the second quarter of the 18th century. The period id of special interest as one which, in the traditional view, witnessed the emergence of Iran as a 'national state'. It is in the latter half of this era that moderate Shi'ism acquired the definitive hold on the country which has been maintained to the present day, and which helps to differentiate Iran from the other Islamic states of south-west Asia. In addition to chapters on commercial and diplomatic contacts with Europe - contacts usually fortified by a common hostility to the Ottoman Turks - which became prominent from the 16th century, the volume contains chapters on social and economic history, the arts and architecture, the exact sciences, religion, philosophy and literature. -- VOLUME 7, Edited by: P. Avery, G. R. G. Hambly, C. Melville. This final volume of The Cambridge History of Iran covers the period from 1722 to 1979. Beginning in the reign of Nadir Shah, it traces the establishment of the Qajar dynasty and the rise and fall of the Pahlavi autocracy. Part II discusses relations with the Ottoman Empire, Russia, European countries, Britain and British India. Part III covers economic and social developments, including systems of land tenure and revenue administration, the tribes, the traditional Iranian city, European economic penetration and the impact of the oil industry. In Part IV religious and cultural life is examined. There are chapters on religious change and Iranian arts and crafts - including architecture, ceramics, painting, metalwork and textiles, from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries - and popular entertainment, literature, and the press in modern Iran.

first edition in French4 vols.12mo. (in eights and fours)[2 (title), [xiii], ix-xliv, [23 (preface & table)], 436, 433-449;[2 (title)], 431;[2 (title)], 421; [2 (title)], 303pp. (complete, with error in pagination in vol.1), 5 folding maps, contemporary sprinkled calf, spines panelled by raised bands, panels gilt decorated with a large oval central tool, russet lettering and black numbering morocco labels, top panels with the crest and coronet of the Duke of Leinster gilt blocked on an attractive green morocco label, bindings a little rubbed and scuffed at edges, else very good. An attractive copy.Tamerlane (1336-1405), brilliant military label and empire builder, conquered a huge swathe of territory that encompassed much of central Asia and adjoining regions - the Uzbekistan, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Russia, Turkey, Syria, and Pakistan and India. He died on campaign attempting to conquer China. He founded the Timurid Empire which his squabbling descendants failed to hold together but his descendants formed the Mughul Dynasty that ruled India until they were overthrown by the British in the nineteenth century. He was at the same time one of the most brutal mass slaughters in history and a great patron of the arts. This biography, one of the most important sources on his life, was written under the personal supervision Mirza Ibrahim Sultan, the son of Shah Rukh and grandson of the great Timur and understandably therefore takes a highly favourable view of him. Petis de la Croix (1653-1713), French orientalist, was sent to the East orient on an extended language course as part of a program devised by Colbert to create a pool of capable foreign officials. He spent ten years in Syria, Persia and Turkey where he mastered the local languages and became well acquainted with local culture and history which formed the basis for several publications from 1707 on. Chief among these is this excellent French version of the History of Timur which had been completed in A.D. 1425 and which was published posthumously in 1722. This first printing of the translation into French was also issued in Paris under the imprints of Cailleau, Deshayes and Hortemels. Apart from the title page imprints these all appear to be identical. An English translation by J. Darby from his French followed in London in 1723.

L'opera è illustrata f.t. da 47 tavv. anatomiche, inc. in rame da Giulio de Musi, tutte dettagliatamente descritte a fronte. "Seconda edizione". Cfr. anche Garrison-Morton,391 che cita la I ed. del 1714: "He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves" - Brunet,II,1113. Cfr. anche Garrison-Morton,391 che cita la I ed. del 1714: "He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves" - Brunet,II,1113. Solo 1 carta iniziale restaur. per strappi margin., altrimenti esemplare con barbe, ben conservato.
