This work of Vignola is one of the most published books in architectural history and amongst the most influential ever written, due to the clarity of the author"s practical system for constructing columns in the five classical orders. After this studies we can easily distinguished the classical styles from one another by their expression in the columns as Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite. The first edition, published in 1562, contained only the first 32 plates. Vignolo was one of the three great architects of the Italian Renaissance alongside Serlio and Palladio. He worked in Italy and France, under the patronage of the powerful Farnese family, Pope Julius III, and King Francis I of France at Fontainebleau, but is best known for his work with Michelangelo on St. Peter"s Basilica in Rome.         Carte d'Afrique Incredible 1742 map of Africa

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier. unbound. Map. Engraving with original outline hand coloring. Sheet measures 21.25" x 25.75". Beautiful map of the continent shown in detail, reflecting the geography of the region known during the mid-18th century. Throughout, the map notes several kingdoms and tribes. The map shows extensive detail along the coast, especially along the Mediterranean coast, northeast Africa and the western and southern areas of the continent as these regions were well explored at the time due to European interests. The interiors are relatively less detailed.<br><br>Delisle map of 1722 was the first to correctly show the source of the Nile at Lake Tana (Dambea) rather than the earlier Ptolemaic concept. It also correctly shows the Senegal and Niger Rivers separated.<br><br>The southern African gold mining regions of Monomotapa (supposed location of King Solomon's mines) and Monoemugi are identified. The early mapping of Lake Malawi, which would officially be discovered only a hundred years later, is noted. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the top left corner with another cartouche with an advertisement in the bottom left. Map is engraved by J. Kondet.<br><br>The map is in good condition with minor wear and toning along the original centerfold. Minor foxing at places. Full margins. Deaccession stamp verso "Western Reserve Historical Society"<br><br> The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.<br><br> Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) was a legendary French cartographer known for introducing a new standard of accuracy into 17th-century mapmaking. He was one of the cartographers who propelled the French school of map-making away from Dutch dominance. The French school emphasized science and accuracy over ornament. His family took over the business and kept publishing maps well into the late 18th century. He used astronomical observations to determine locations and draw more precise coastlines. He continually updated his maps and dispelled prevailing geographical inaccuracies throughout his life.

The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the famous Moll Flanders &c

ondon- W Chetwood and T Edling], 1722 Book. Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A very scarce first edition of this celebrated novel by Daniel Defoe. One of Defoe's most famousworks, second only to Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders is a first-person picaresque novel purportedly written by the heroine herself. Very scarce. Only twocopies held in UK collections, one in the British Library, the other at Trinity College Cambridge. Collated:LackingTitle page but consistent with the first edition of 1722 and the only edition to have this pagination. A facsimile title page can be obtained if required. Title pagefor this edition states 1721, but thework was actually published in January of 1722. With the blank leaf to A8, almost always removed in rebinding. (Moore 446, ESTCT70314)In a contemporarybinding. Title page likely removed due to the notoriety of the work. Moll Flanders was written and published after Defoe had become a recognised and successful novelist. Though the work was originallypublished as if it were an autobiography, it was attributed to Defoe after his death. Partially based on the life of notorious London criminal Moll King, whom Defoe personally met in Newgate prison, Moll Flanders was a sensational novel in which the heroine manages to retain the sympathy of the reader despite her various trials and tribulations and her questionable morality. An important work, now part of the literary canon andkey in the development of the novel and an insight into social and cultural issues of the 17th and 18th century, particularly crime and punishment and the position of women in society. Condition: In original full calf binding. Externally, sound with rubbing. Bumping to extremities and loss to leather at extremities, head and tail of spine and joints. Frontjoint cracked and front hinge tender. Small ink signature to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places, particularly to page 387 whichis loosening slightly. Pagesslightlybrowned withlight spotting, usage marks andlight tidemarks to the earlypart of the work. Lackingtitle page. Overall: GOOD.

As additions to the general objectives of these volumes, Professor Yarshater has included in this volume chapters on the institutional, administrative, legal, numismatic, linguistic and literary aspects of the period and he further develops the scope of the volume by including studies of Iran's interaction with neighbouring societies, of Iran's mythical and legendary history, and of Iranian settlements outside the geographical boundaries of Iran and Afghanistan. -- VOLUME 4, The Period from the Arab Invasion to the Saljuqs. Edited by: R. N. Frye. It studies the gradual transition of Iran from Zoroastrianism to Islam, the uniting of all Iranians under one rule, the flowering into full magnificence of the Persian language, and the establishment of those other acts which were to flourish so brilliantly after the Mongol conquest. -- VOLUME 5, The Saljuq and Mongol Periods. Edited by: J. A. Boyle. Volume 5 is a survey of every aspect of the civilisations which flourished in the Iranian region between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries: the rise and decline of the Saljuqs, the Mongol invasion and the establishment of a Mongol regime which dominated the Middle East for more than a century. -- VOLUME 6, The Timurid and Safavid Periods. Edited by: Peter Jackson and Lawrence Lockhart. This volume covers the history of Iran from the collapse of the Il-Khanid empire (c. 1335) to the second quarter of the 18th century. The period id of special interest as one which, in the traditional view, witnessed the emergence of Iran as a 'national state'. It is in the latter half of this era that moderate Shi'ism acquired the definitive hold on the country which has been maintained to the present day, and which helps to differentiate Iran from the other Islamic states of south-west Asia. In addition to chapters on commercial and diplomatic contacts with Europe - contacts usually fortified by a common hostility to the Ottoman Turks - which became prominent from the 16th century, the volume contains chapters on social and economic history, the arts and architecture, the exact sciences, religion, philosophy and literature. -- VOLUME 7, Edited by: P. Avery, G. R. G. Hambly, C. Melville. This final volume of The Cambridge History of Iran covers the period from 1722 to 1979. Beginning in the reign of Nadir Shah, it traces the establishment of the Qajar dynasty and the rise and fall of the Pahlavi autocracy. Part II discusses relations with the Ottoman Empire, Russia, European countries, Britain and British India. Part III covers economic and social developments, including systems of land tenure and revenue administration, the tribes, the traditional Iranian city, European economic penetration and the impact of the oil industry. In Part IV religious and cultural life is examined. There are chapters on religious change and Iranian arts and crafts - including architecture, ceramics, painting, metalwork and textiles, from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries - and popular entertainment, literature, and the press in modern Iran.

An exact and particular Narrative of a cruel and inhumane Murder attempted on the Body of Edward Crispe, Esq; at St. Edmunds-Bury in Suffolk, On the first of January last at Night, by Arundel Coke, Esq; Barrister at Law, and John Woodburn, a Laborer. Together with both their Examinations and Confessions before Serjeant Reynolds Recorder, and Alderman Wright: also The Information of John Carter, a Blacksmith, and the Declaration of Mr. Crispe himself. To which are added True Copies of their Commitment to Prison, and an Extract of an Act of Parliament, relating to their Case. Faithfully collected from the Original Papers. The second edition.

Printed for J. Roberts in Warwick Lane,, London 1722 - Second edition. The defendant was the first to be executed under the so-called 'Coventry Act'. Coke had attempted to kill Crispe in attempt to gain his fortune, but bungled the murder and succeeded only in slitting his victim's nose. The Coventry Act of 1671 was cited in court (and is reproduced here): 'That if any Person or Persons . on Purpose, and of Malice, Fore-thought, and by lying in Wait, shall unlawfully cut out or disable the Tongue, put out an Eye, slit the Nose, cut off a Nose or Lip or Member of any Subject of his Majesty . [they] shall be, and are hereby declared to be Felons, and shall suffer Death as in Cases of Felony.' Coke argued that he had not intended to slit Crispe's nose but to murder him, but was nonetheless hanged with his accomplice. 8vo (180 × 110 mm), pp. 28. Title and final page quite soiled and creased, some thumbing an dampstaining elsewehere, but sound. Preserved in recent wrappers, to style. A splendid copy in beautiful full contemporary calf-gilt.De Montfaucon (1655-1741), a Benedictine of the Congregation of Saint-Maur devoted to historical and ecclesiastical scholarship, pioneered the studies of Greek paleography and archaeology. "His Antiquité". surveyed in fifteen volumes the social and artistic aspects of the ancient civilizations; and the unfinished Monuments de la Monarchie Française tried to do the same for early French history. These works can well be called foundation stones of scientific archaeology"&#157; (Printing and the Mind of Man 175). In preparing L'Antiquité". de Montfaucon received contributions and assistance from many of the greatest European collections of antiquities of the period; most of these are credited adjacent to each of their respective illustrations. "As this work has never been completely replaced, it still conserves its long-standing value". Beautiful copies are not easy to come by"&#157; (Brunet 28960). "In spite of the imperfections that are impossible to avoid in such an immense work". one cannot deny that it has contributed to the spread, particularly in France, of the interest in archaeology, or that he did not advance this science among us"&#157; (Biographie Universelle). Text in French and Latin. First published in 1719, in an edition of 1800 copies that sold out in two months despite its enormous size and expense. Cicognara 2493.
