Japan map - Seutter.

Seuttero, S.C. Maj. Geogr. Aug. Vind.Decorative map of Japan published at Matthaeus Seutter in Augsburg around 1720-30. The map was engraved by Tobias Conrad Lotter, after the geographical sketches of the travel by Engelbert Kaempfer to Japan. In the upper left corner there is a large figurative and allegoric title cartouche, with scenes relating to the exploration of Japan. The bottom of the map is ornated with Japanese arms relating to the kingdom of Japan. Copper engraving, coloured by a later hand. Plate size approx. 49 x 56,7 cm. Seutter, an 18th-century cartographer, was born in Augsburg (Germany) in 1678. In 1697 he became an apprentice to the cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann. By 1707 he returned to Augsburg where he established his own business and produced maps (about 500), atlases (since 1728/30) and globes. Seutter's maps are quite similar to Homann's, and were famous for their details, colour, and decorative cartouches. After dedicating his large atlas to Karl VI, Seutter was awarded the title of "Kaiserlicher Geograph". One of his daughters, Euphrosine married the cartographer Tobias Conrad Lotter from Augsburg who, after the death of Seutter's son, Albrecht Carl, became the successor to Seutter and a famous mapmaker on his own. Zeeland wandkaart - Roman/Visser, Ottens.

ZEELAND OP DE KAART GEZET?Zeelandiae Comitatus??, kopergravure gedrukt op 9 bladen, vervaardigd door Zacharias Roman en Nicolaas Visscher I, ca. 1720 uitgegeven door Reinier Ottens. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 137 x 156,5 cm.

Regni Mexicani seu Novae Hispaniae, Ludovicianae, N. Angliae, Carolinae, Virginiae et Pensylvaniae, necnon Insularum, Archipelagi Mexicani in America Septentrionali

Homann, Johann Baptist, Nuremburg - This striking circa 1720 map by Johann Baptist Homann extends from the Great Lakes southward to include Florida, West Indies, Central America, up to Venezuela, and from New Mexico to the eastern seaboard. Based on the 1703 Delisle map of Mexico and Florida, this map includes information from the explorations of La Salle, Bienville, Le Sueur, d'Iberville, Lederer, and other early travelers. The most striking features of this map are the elaborate cartouches. The title cartouche in the top left depicts Native American figures along with the various natural resources of the Americas including beaver pelts and tobacco rolls. A large cartouche in the Atlantic depicts a gold mining scene with natives helping Europeans fill their chests with treasures. The third cartouche just off the Pacific Coast of Mexico depicts a sea battle with a large warship (likely British or French) and a smaller fleet (likely Spanish). These cartouches enhance the focus of this map.The British colonies are accurately shown along the east coast, east of the Appalachians. Following the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, French claims in Louisiana extend from the Rio del Norte to the Appalachians and include Florida and north to include the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence in 'Canada Nova Francia'. Spanish influence can be noted in the west and south to include Mexicana, Nova Hispania and America Meridionalis. Dotted lines track the routes of the Spanish fleets. Throughout, the map notes several place names, native tribes, villages, early settlements, forts, and several other topographic features. The kingdom of Quivira, the supposed ancient city of gold in North America, is identified just below the title cartouche. In good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold and minor foxing at places. Appropriate original coloring with the cartouches left black and white. Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a renowned German mapmaker of the late 17th and early 18th century, including being geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers. Map. Copper engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 18.75" x 22.5".

After dedicating his large atlas to Karl VI, Seutter was awarded the title of "Kaiserlicher Geograph". Fascinating Pair of Autograph Letters Signed to the Earl CONINGSBY (George, 1657-1732, Lieutenant-General, Commander-in-Chief, Scotland, from 1719 Baron Carpenter in the Irish Peerage)

1720 - (Thomas, 1657-1729, from 1719 1st Earl), in his engaging hand, in the first thanking him for offering "your interest for my standing at Webly", (Weobley in Herefordshire), "My reason for desiring time was in order to disengage my self handsomely at the Burrough I now serve for . Regni Mexicani seu Novae Hispaniae, Ludovicianae, N. Angliae, Carolinae, Virginiae et Pensylvaniae, necnon Insularum, Archipelagi Mexicani in America Septentrionali

Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist. unbound. Map. Copper engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 18.75" x 22.5". This striking circa 1720 map by Johann Baptist Homann extends from the Great Lakes southward to include Florida, West Indies, Central America, up to Venezuela, and from New Mexico to the eastern seaboard.

These cartouches enhance the focus of this map.

The British colonies are accurately shown along the east coast, east of the Appalachians.

POLAND Ð Baltic Coast: Mer Baltique. C™te de Prusse. De Jershšft ˆ Rixhšft dÕaprs les Cartes de lÔAmirautŽ Allemande.

      - A rare and highly attractive sea chart, embracing much of the Baltic Coast of Poland, featuring vignettes of lighthouses and other landmarks. This fine sea chart embraces the Polish Baltic Coast from Jaros?awiec, in what is now the West Pomeranian (Zachodniopomorskie) vovoidship all the way west to the resort city of Sopot in the Pomeranian (Pomorskie) vovoidship, just shy of Gda?sk. The seas feature detailed hydrographic information, such as bathymetric soundings, the locations of shoals and hazards, the nature of the sea floor and magnetic declination. On the shore, the locations of lighthouses are heightened in orange. Forests, highlands, lakes, towns and railways are depicted, while the chart is embellished with several attractive pictorial vignettes of major landmarks. The chart is based on advanced hydrographic surveys conducted by the Kaiserliche Marine (German Imperial Navy), as the region was then under the administration of the German Empire. It was issued by the DŽp™t gŽnŽral de la Marine, the French NavyÕs hydrographic service, which since 1720, had been one of the worldÕs leading makers of sea charts. The first edition the chart was issued in 1883, with the present edition being issued in 1907, embracing corrections and improvements up to September of that year. Interestingly, in the lower right corner (blank margin) features the contemporary stamp of the likely original seller of the chart: ÔWeisaeker / Opticien de la Marine / 13, Rue du Quai, Dunkerque.Õ The major towns and lakes featured on the chart, running west to east, are: ÔJershšftÕ (Jaros?awiec); ÔLac de VietzkeÕ (Jezioro Wicko); ÔStolpmŸndeÕ (Utska); ÔStolpeÕ (Slupsk); ÔLac de GardeÕ (Jezioro Gardno); ÔLac de LebaÕ (Jezioro Lebsko); ÔLac SarbskeÕ (Jezioro Sarbsko); ÔLac de ZarnowitzÕ (Jezioro ?arnowieckie); ÔRixhšftÕ (Rozewie); ÔPutzigÕ (Puck); ÔOxhšftÕ (Oksywie); ÔGdingenÕ (now named Gdynia); ÔFort dÕOlivaÕ (Oliwa Forest); ÔZoppatÕ (Sopot). The most striking difference between the mapping on the chart and the appearance of the region today is the depiction of the area along the shores of the Bay of Gda?sk (Zatoka Gda?ska) and Puck Bay (Zatoka Pucka), on the right-hand side of the chart, running between ÔZoppotÕ (Sopot) and ÔPutzigÕ (Puck). While already a popular resort area by the turn of the 19th-20th Centuries, the region was still largely a sparsely populated, bucolic rural area. This would all change dramatically following its transfer to the newly created Polish Republic in 1920. As the corridor was then PolandÕs only outlet to the sea, vast resources were allocated to developing the region. Most notably, ÔGdingenÕ (Gdynia), which is shown to be a small town of barely 2,000 residents in 1907, grew to have a population of over 120,000 in 1939, and is today a sizable city and major port. The most attractive aspect of the chart are the 10 vignettes that depict major landmarks, such as lighthouses and churches, including: ÔPhare de JershšftÕ (Jaros?awiec Lighthouse / Latarnia Morska Jaros?awiec); ÔEglise de MarsowÕ (Marszewo Church / Ko?ci—? Marszewo); ÔEglise de GardÕ (Grdno Church / Ko?ci—? Gardno); ÔPhare de ScholprinÕ (Smo?dzi?ski Lighthouse / Latarnia Morska Smo?dzi?ski); ÔEglise de ZarnowitzÕ (?arnowieckie Church / Ko?ci—? ?arnowieckie); ÔNouveau Phare de RixhšftÕ (New Rozewie Lighthouse / Nowa Latarnia Morska Rozewie); ÔVieux Phare de RixhšftÕ (Old Rozewie Lighthouse / Stara Latarnia Morska Rozewie); ÔPhare de OxhšftÕ (Oksywie Lighthouse / Latarnia Morska Oksywie); ÔEglise dÕOxhšftÕ (Oksywie Church / Ko?ci—? Oksywie); and ÔHochwasserÕ, the historic villa, near Sopot. The survival rate of such working sea charts is remarkably low, as the vast majority perished due to heavy use aboard ships. The present chart is thus very rare, we are not aware of another example appearing on the market during the last generation. References: Justus Perthes, Dr. A. Cosmopoli. ¶ Stephen H. Daniel, Toland: his mehtods, manners and mind p.13 "Putting his principle into practice, Toland had very few copies of his Pantheisticon printed, and these he personally gave to his friends" - Albert Lantoine Un précurseur de la Franc-maçonnerie : John Toland (1670-1722), Nourry 1927 - Jammes Bûcher bibliogr. n°677 - Fesch p.1383 - Manque à Caillet et à Dorbon.
