        Poems on Several Occasions

London- Bernard Lintot 1717 - A highly sought after first edition of Elijah Fenton's Poems on Several Occasions. Being an extremely important text in the history of literature. Alexander Pope was so encouraged by this work that it lead him to ask Fenton if he would assist in a translation of the Odyssey. Unfortunately, lacking the original frontispiece, although holding the original publisher's advertisements and dedication page. Adorned with beautifully engraved decorative head and tail pieces throughout. Condition: Rebacked in a calf binding with contemporary calf boards. Externally, light wear to the boards, as well as some minor evidence of past worming. Internally, firmly bound and delightfully bright. Generally clean, aside from the odd spot and handling mark. Overall: VERY GOOD [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Exceedingly Rare Colonial Legal Document

New York: , 1717. New York, 1717. unbound. Colonial lawyer, Attorney General of New York/New Jersey, staunch defender of religious freedom and one of the founders of the Trinity Church. Exceedingly rare A.D.S, a legal writ whereby Jamison presents charges against a colonist, 4to. 1p. City of New York, Commissioner for recording, Office of the Attorney General,February 14, 1717, in part: " David Jamison for our Lord the King George, by the grace of God of Great Britain, Wales and Scotland - and before John Johnston Esq., Mayor of the City of New York, on the 27th of Jan, in the fourth year of his reign...were informed that Jacob Bonnott...having insulted the King, faces damages sought in the amount of 24 shillings.".Clearly signed "CJamison"as Recorder. Directly beneath this document the Mayor of New York, JOHN JOHNSTON, (1717 - 1719), pens his verdict in the form of an A.D.S., Feb. 14th, 1717, in part: "CJacob Bonnett, the defendant, in his proper pardon before the above...acknowledged the above action and comforth judgment. I give judgment for the Plaintiff for one pound & four shillings Damages with Costs". A remarkable Colonial document. Slight weaknesses at the folds otherwise, very good condition. Jamison was expelled from England (by the Stuarts) and sold into servitude in America because of his religious beliefs. As an accomplished lawyer he would go on to represent Reverend Francis Makemie, whereby the latter, a Presbyterian, was charged with "Preaching without a license in a private house". In this landmark case - Jamison argued for toleration in such a colony as New York, pointing out that he himself was (secretly) one of the founders of Trinity Church - "erecting a Church of England Congregation to secure the liberty of religious freedom. To the amazement of many, Makemie was acquitted and soon-there-after religious tolerance was enacted into the State Charter (1707). Jamison would eventually receive a Royal Commission as Recorder and Attorney General of New York. The founders of Trinity Church. Le second ex-libris est au nom de Karl Zeerleder, probablement l'homme politique et ancien maire de Berne (1780-1851), enfin la note se trouvant sur l'angle supérieur externe du premier contreplat indique Ouchy 1863, petite ville qui se trouve au sud ouest de Lausanne. L'oeuvre est un poème épique qui se compose de 17 chants et 12000 héxametres, ayant pour thème la seconde guerre punique qui conduisit Hannibal aux portes de Rome.         The Vocal Pocket Companion Being a Select Collection of the Most Favorite Catches, Glees and Duetts, for Two and Three Voices Humbly Inscribed to Mrs Crewe By Her Most Obedient and Obliged Servant

London, [C.1780s]: George Smart, Printed for the Editor at His Music Warehouse. First and Only Edition. Dimensions 4 x 5.5 Inches. [2], 3-52ff. Each leaf mounted on stiff card. Engraved title and index leaves, the remainder printed. Very slight chipping to extremities and some browning to first two and final leaf. Preserved in nineteenth-century red morocco slipcase, a trifle rubbed. A scarce compendium of 50 popular choral music printed on small cards presumably produced to be held in the hand. The dedicatory nod to society hostess Fanny Crewe suggests these were produced for the luxury market, to be used in a social rather than professional setting. Whilst many of the pieces are attributed to the composers Lawes, Hilton, Baildon, Purcell, Brewer, Arne, Festing, Greene, Goodgrow, Byrd, Hayes, Atterbury, Wilson, Harrington, Holmes, King, Lawes, Travers and Gregory, others are published without a name attached. Included in the later category is 'So peaceful rests without a stone', taken from the sixth verse of Pope's Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady (1717) and 'Fear no danger to ensue the hero loves as well' from Purcell's Dido and Aneas (1689). George Smart (1750/51?-1818?), musical instrument maker and publisher, relocated his 'music warehouse' to the corner of Argyll St. from nearby Conduit St in around 1774. According to Humphries and Smith's Music Publishing in the British Isles, (Oxford, 1970), it survived until 1805.The apparent rarity of this set both in commerce and institutionally makes this survival in such good condition more remarkable; OCLC locates a single set at the British Library (dated C.1785). A similar, likely subsequent Smart production with a very similar title, but with the replacement of 'new collection' for 'select collection' and naming 'the following eminent masters, viz. Dr Cooke, Danby, Webbe, Finesche, Callcott' to the title is recorded by OCLC at BL and Yale. Both titles have long been highlighted as treasures: forming single lots 66 and 68 at Sotheby's book sale of February 9th 1837.

A condition of Baskett's lease of the university press was the contribution of £2,000 towards the building of a new printing house; the move from the Sheldonian into Clarendon House took place in October 1713. Baskett's ambitious imperial folio bible decorated with engravings by Hoffman, Du Bosc, and Vandergucht, later described by the bibliophile Thomas Dibdin as a magnificent work, was however marred by a number of errors and was nicknamed the Vinegar Bible from the misprint in the headline of the parable of the vineyard in Luke 20. Nevertheless, "even loose sheets of this work, described as 'shining examples of paper and print' by Daniel Price, were much sought" (Nichols, Illustrations, 708, cited in ODNB).

1717. Good. MARIN, Pieter. DICTIONNAIRE COMPLET HOLLANDOIS ET FRANCOIS. COMPLEET NEDERDUITSCH EN FRANSCH WOORDENBOEK. Amsterdam, printed for the author in de Wye-Capelsteeg, and also to be found at the Widow Gysbert de Groot and Pieter de Coup, 1710 and 1717. Quarto. Two volumes. [xl]1208[4]; [xx]1062pp. First edition, with both volumes signed by the author on the "copye van de Privilegie" page. The first volume, published in 1710, has French to Dutch vocabulary; the second, 1717, is Dutch to French. Both have engraved allegorical titlepages, explained in Dutch on a separate, printed leaf. The author promises to follow the usage of the French Academy, and to include terms of the "necessary arts, curious notes, historical remarks, and other items encouraging a taste for good literature." In early vellum, dried, broken and soiled. Volume I is detached from its covers, with the 20 leaves of prelims disbound, with some staining and tattering, but no loss to printed area. Volume II clings to its covers by two cords, shows dampstaining to last quarter of text, with two final blanks detached and key to frontispiece torn. Clearly in need of, and worthy of, a binder's help. This important dictionary was reprinted in 1720, 1728, 1730, and 1743. Both the OCLC and the Cordell Collection list only later editions.         Ragguaglio della Nozze delle Maestà Filippo Quinto e di Elisabetta Farnese...celebrate in Parma l’Anno 1714

Parma: Stamperia di S.A.S., 1717. Rare fete book celebrating the nuptials of Philip V of Spain, the Founder of the Bourbon dynasty, and Elizabeth Farnese, at Parma Cathedral in September of 1714. Arranged by the Vatican after the death of Philip's first wife, Maria Louisa of Savoy, the marriage was of considerable political importance, and in due course brought about the transference of the Duchy of Parma from the possession of the Farnese family to that of the Bourbons. As not infrequently happened in such marriages, the groom didn’t show, but was represented by proxy (a high-ranking Cardinal!). The prose account retails the entry of the massive Vatican entourage into Parma, the tour of the Farnese apartments and other possessions and selected local attractions. The elaborate procession to the Cathedral is set out, with remarks on costume and of course the decoration of the cathedral is treated at length. The Farnese court painter Ilario Spolverino (1657-1734) was commissioned to make a series of paintings of the event, from which a number of engravings were made for the work at hand by the Bolognese Francia. The plates include an allegorical frontispiece in which winged figures present an oval portrait of Elizabeth Farnese to the (apparently) smitten King; (1) an “extra” large plate showing the entry of the Vatican party into Parma, complete with 24 mules; (2) the exterior of the cathedral decorated with draperies and family arms; (3) the decorated interior, with draperies and allegorical emblems, and showing as well the contemporary state of the Cathedral’s permanent decoration, a subject of considerable art historical interest; (4) the wedding proceedings “live,” including the panoply of the filled cathedral; (5) an architectural plan of the cathedral.* Berlin Kat. 3060; Lipperheide Si 36; Cicognara 1491; Vinet 567; Coxe, Memoirs of the Kings of Spain and of the House of Bourbon; R.A. Riccardi, Ilario Spolverini (1979), #55-73.. Folio, (1) f., 115, (1) pp., including frontispiece and 5 large folding plates measuring approximately ; plate I; 89cmx60cm; plate II.:49cmx44cm: plate III:43cmx67cm: plate IV:82cmx60cm; plate V: 82cmx53cm. Bound in original Spanish calf. ‘Pasta Espanola”. Very tall copy with large margins. Internally very fresh. Generally excellent.

Nova Territori Erfordien in Suas Prefecturas

Nuremberg.: [Johann Baptist Homann.]. 1717.. A beautifully engraved hand coloured map of North East Germany showing the area around Erfurt in detail. In the centre of the map is a small plan of Erfurt, which is also shown as a panoramic view at the foot of the map and titled 'St. Petersburg'. An elaborate decorative title cartouche in the lower right corner depicts allegorical figures surrounded by the produce of the land including sheaves of wheat; a beehive; and a cornucopia of fruits. Cherubs holding a coat of arms float up from the scene on the right, while on the lower left a centaur sits meditatively beneath a pine tree amongst slaughtered cattle. Physical features of the area are illustrated and farming areas shown by fields which criss-cross across the map. A clear, dark impression, the work of an outstanding German cartographer who, in 1715, was appointed as imperial geographer by Emperor Charles VI. This map also includes "Schwan See" [Swan Lake] under a town of the same name, which has since disappeared. Hand coloured, two very minor splits at upper and lower edges on centre fold and not affecting engraved area, a handsome map, 54 x 61.5 cm. .
