Calculus plenilunii ecliptici quod factum est anno Christi 1717 . . . Calculus plenilunii ecliptici quod factum est anno Christi 1718 . . . Calculus interlunii ecliptici e tabulis Philippi Lansbergii quod anno Christi 1724 . . . [Amsterdam?, ca. 1720]. 12mo & 8vo (14.5×8.5 cm). Latin manuscript in brown ink on paper providing information about and tables of data for lunar and solar eclipses, with 3 full-page astronomical diagrams. Contemporary gold-tooled mottled calf.

      - A nice astronomical manuscript in Latin giving information and tables of data about solar and lunar eclipses, illustrated with three full-page diagrams. The calculations are made for viewing from Amsterdam. Each of the three principal sections has a sort of title-page, all three given above. They concern the lunar eclipses of 16/27 March 1717 and 9/20 September 1718 (both clearly noted as past events) and the solar eclipse of 11/22 May 1724, which may have occurred after the manuscript was written. For this last, the manuscript refers to the tables of astronomical data compiled by the Dutch astronomer (Johan) Philip Lansberge (1561-1632) and published at Middleburg in 1632 and later editions. In very good condition, with only minor spotting and a couple small marginal stains. The binding is somewhat worn at the hinges and edges, and the mottling has slightly cracked the surface of the leather, but it still remains in good condition.

Songes and Sonettes. Written By the Right Honorable Lord Henry Haward, late Earle of Surrey.

8vo. London: Re-printed by E. Curll, Anno 1717. 8vo., [2], [2], 32 pp., contemporary purple half leather, pebbled purple cloth boards. Many typographic flourishes in text. Newspaper clipping with review of a book about Edmund Curll. Wear to hinges and edges of binding, some foxing and damp stains; very good copy. Bookplate “From Curll’s Chaste Press. In the Collection of Lt. Col. F. Grant.” An incomplete edition. Curll says he printed from three editions, viz. 1565, 1567, and 1569. This edition ends with the poems of Sir Thomas Wyatt. Edmund Curll was an English bookseller and publisher, known for shamelessly profiting on scandals, pornography, Whig tracts, and “medical” texts. Curll managed a chain of printing houses, and he is most renown for the unauthorized publication of works produced by other houses, often against the authors wishes, especially in the case of Jonathan Swift.         The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues: And Hath the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised

John Baskett, Oxford 1717 - (20 3/4 x 13 1/2 inches). Engraved frontispiece in vol. I, engraved vignettes on general title and New Testament title, engraved head- and tail-piece vignettes, and engraved initials. Contemporary black panelled morocco gilt, the covers with gilt roll-tooled borders around a series of concentric gilt panels with ornamental leafy sprays and corner-pieces, central lozenge gilt composed of similar small tooling, spines richly gilt in nine compartments, morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers and gilt edges (discreet expert repairs at top and bottom of joints) Provenance: Sir John Hynde Cotton (armorial bookplate); William Charles Smith (armorial bookplate); Maggs Bros., catalogue 1212, Bookbinding in the British Isles, item 86 First edition of the monumental, splendidly illustrated "Vinegar Bible" -- a "magnificent edition" (Darlow & Moule) here ruled in red and handsomely bound. Commonly known as the "Vinegar Bible" from the misprint "the parable of the vinegar" for "vineyard" in the headline above Luke, Chapter 20. While a contemporary lambasted Baskett for this and other typographical errors in the text, calling it a "Baskett-ful of errors," Oxford historian of printing Harry Carter states that "only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type, impression, and paper" (The History of the Oxford University Press, 1975, I, p. 171) In 1709 John Baskett purchased the exclusive royal patent to print Bibles in England, control of which his family retained until 1799. This magnificent edition of the Bible is among Baskett's most important works, highly regarded for its large, elegant type; its 60 striking copper-engraved vignette head- and tailpieces; and its many delicately engraved historiated initials. Two distinct varieties occur. This copy is Darlow & Moule's issue A, with additional engraved general title page depicting Moses writing the first words of Genesis (here bound as frontispiece); vigenette view of Oxford on the general title page; and vignette title page for New Testament depicting the Annunciation, dated 1716. The present example is noted for both its lovely contemporary black morocco gilt binding and for being ruled in red throughout. Similar bindings on this edition of the bible are noted in both the Wardington Collection and in Mirjam Foot's Studies in the History of Bookbinding p. 409. Darlow & Moule 735; Herbert 942. Frontispiece: Arab Shekh - From the Tribe of the Beni Koreish // Robert Wood (1717 9 September 1771) was a British traveller, classical scholar, civil servant and politician. He was the son of the Revd James Wood of Summerhill, County Meath and educated at Glasgow University (1732) and the Middle Temple (1736). In 1750-1751 Wood travelled around the Levant with two wealthy young Oxford scholars James Dawkins and John Bouverie (who died of a fever early in their expedition) and an Italian draftsman Giovanni Battista Borra. Their primary goal was to explore the Troad and locate the key sites mentioned by Homer. Moving south into Syria, they then took careful measurements and drawings of the ancient Roman ruins of Palmyra and Baalbek. The results of these were published in 1753 and 1757 in both English and French editions and were among the first systematic publications of ancient buildings. Both works were of great influence on neoclassical architecture in Britain, Continental Europe and America. From 1753 to 1756, Wood was the tutor and travelling companion (or Bear-leader as such men were known at the time) of the young Duke of Bridgewater, the richest peer in England, in making the Grand Tour. In 1756 he was appointed Under Secretary to the Secretary of State for the Southern Department, who was initially Pitt the Elder. It was to Wood that Granville famously quoted an appropriate passage from Homer's Iliad as he signed the Treaty of Paris on his deathbed in 1763 (Wood published an essay on Homer in 1765, which stated that true knowledge can come only after one has had an opportunity to evaluate one's own society in relation to others). In 1764, following the instructions of Secretary of State Halifax, Wood acted under a general warrant to seize the papers of John Wilkes, who subsequently won damages of 1000 from him for trespass. In 1761 Wood was elected Member of Parliament for the Duke of Bridgewater's pocket borough of Brackley in Northamptonshire, which he continued to represent until his death. He was also Master of the Revels in Ireland, and at one point it was rumoured that he would be appointed Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, but the Lord Lieutenant objected to Wood's "public and private character" as well as his "mean birth", and the appointment was never made. Tomb of Robert Wood, Putney Old Burial Ground After his death on 9 September 1771, Wood was buried near his home in Putney at Putney Old Burial Ground, in a white marble sarcophagus engraved with an epitaph written by Horace Walpole. He had married Ann, the daughter of Thomas Skottowe, with whom he had two sons and a daughter. One son Robert was also an MP. (Wikipedia)___________________________ James Bruce (14 December 1730 27 April 1794) was a Scottish traveller and travel writer who spent more than a dozen years in North Africa and Ethiopia, where he traced the origins of the Blue Nile. James Bruce was born at the family seat of Kinnaird, Stirlingshire, and educated at Harrow School and Edinburgh University, and began to study for the bar, but his marriage to the daughter of a wine importer and merchant resulted in him entering that business instead. His wife died in October 1754, within nine months of marriage, and Bruce thereafter travelled in Portugal and Spain as part of the wine trade. The examination of oriental manuscripts at the Escorial in Spain led him to the study of Arabic and Ge'ez and determined his future career. In 1758 his father's death placed him in possession of the estate of Kinnaird. On the outbreak of war with Spain in 1762 he submitted to the British government a plan for an attack on Ferrol. His suggestion was not adopted, but it led to his selection by the 2nd Earl of Halifax for the post of British consul at Algiers, with a commission to study the ancient ruins in that country, in which interest had been excited by the descriptions sent home by Thomas Shaw (16941751), who was consular chaplain at Algiers. Having spent six months in Italy studying antiquities, Bruce reached Algiers in March 1763. The whole of his time was taken up with his consular duties at the piratical court of the dey, and he was kept without the assistance promised. But in August 1765, a successor in the consulate having arrived, Bruce began his exploration of the Roman ruins in Barbary. Having examined many ruins in eastern Algeria, he travelled by land from Tunis to Tripoli, and at Ptolemaida took passage for Candia but was shipwrecked near Benghazi and had to swim ashore. He eventually reached Crete, and sailing thence to Sidon, travelled through Syria, visiting Palmyra and Baalbek. Throughout his journeyings in Barbary and the Levant, Bruce made careful drawings of the many ruins he examined. He also acquired a sufficient knowledge of medicine to enable him to pass in the East as a physician. In June 1768 he arrived at Alexandria, having resolved to endeavour to discover the source of the Nile, which he believed to rise in Ethiopia. At Cairo he gained the support of the Mamluk ruler, Ali Bey. After visiting Thebes, where he entered the tomb of Ramesses III, KV11, he crossed the desert to Kosseir, where he embarked in the dress of a Turkish sailor. He reached Jidda in May 1769, and after a stay in Arabia he recrossed the Red Sea and landed at Massawa, then in possession of the Turks, on 19 September. He reached Gondar, then the capital of Ethiopia 14 February 1770, where he was well received by the n?gusä nägäst Tekle Haymanot II, by Ras Mikael Sehul, the real ruler of the country, by Wozoro Aster, wife of the Ras (whom Bruce calls "Esther"), and by the Ethiopians generally. His fine presence (he was 6-foot 4 inches high), his knowledge of Ge'ez, his excellence in sports, his courage, resource and self-esteem, all told in his favour among a people who were in general distrustful of all foreigners. He stayed in Ethiopia for two years, gaining knowledge which enabled him subsequently to present an accurate picture of Ethiopian life. Determined to reach the source of the Blue Nile, and after recovering from malaria, in October 1770 Bruce decided to set out again. This time he travelled with his own small party, which included Balugani and a Greek named Strates. The final march was made on 4 November 1770. Late in the afternoon, after having climbed to 9,500 feet, Bruce's party came upon a rustic church, and the guide, pointing beyond it, indicated a little swamp with a hillock rising from the centre. That, he declared, was the source of the Nile. On 14 November 1770 he reached Gish Abay, the source of the Lesser Abay. When they reached the springs at Gish, James Bruce determined to be merry, picked up a half coconut shell he used as a drinking cup. Filling it from the spring he oblidged Strates to drink a toast to "His Majesty King George III and a long line of princes" and another to "Catherine, Empress of all the Russians" this last was a gesture to Strates' Greek origin, since Catherine the Great was just then at war with the Turks in the Aegean Sea. More toasts followed. Though admitting that the White Nile was the larger stream, Bruce argued that the Blue Nile was the Nile of the ancients and thus he was the discoverer of its source. Setting out from Gondar in December 1771, Bruce made his way, in spite of enormous difficulties, by Sennar to Nubia, being the first European to trace the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile. He was detained in Al Qadarif (which he calls "Teawa") by its governor Fidele, until a combination of cunning, diplomacy and a show of force by his friend the Ethiopian governor of Ras el Fils induced Fidele to release him. Once in Sennar he found himself detained there, and on the night of 25 August the house he was staying in was attacked by thieves, whom Bruce for good reason suspected to be acting with the knowledge, if not on the orders of King Ismai'l. As he and his companions crossed the desert on the western side of the bend of the Nile, they came across the corpses of the caravan of the Muslim dignitary Mahomet Towash they had hoped to travel with despite his status, they had been waylaid, robbed, and killed by the local tribesmen. On 29 November 1772 he reached Aswan, presently returning to the desert to recover his journals and his baggage, which had been abandoned in consequence of the death of all his camels. Cairo was reached in January 1773, and in March Bruce arrived in France, where he was welcomed by Buffon and other savants. He came to London in June 1774, and was interviewed by James Boswell, who published a lengthy account of his travels in the London Magazine. Offended by the incredulity with which his story was received, Bruce retired to his home at Kinnaird. It was not until 1790 that, urged by his friend Daines Barrington, he published his Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, In the Years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1772 and 1773, but was assailed by other travellers as being unworthy of credence. The substantial accuracy of his Ethiopian travels has since been demonstrated, and it is considered that he made a real addition to the geographical knowledge of his day. (Wikipedia)

1717. L'opera è tratta dal celebre Theatre de la guerré en Italie.., per la prima volta edito nel 1691. Incisione in rame, alcune pieghe di carta, coloritura coeva dei contorni, in buono stato di conservazione.
