Frontispiece: Arab Shekh - From the Tribe of the Beni Koreish // Robert Wood (1717 9 September 1771) was a British traveller, classical scholar, civil servant and politician. He was the son of the Revd James Wood of Summerhill, County Meath and educated at Glasgow University (1732) and the Middle Temple (1736). In 1750-1751 Wood travelled around the Levant with two wealthy young Oxford scholars James Dawkins and John Bouverie (who died of a fever early in their expedition) and an Italian draftsman Giovanni Battista Borra. Their primary goal was to explore the Troad and locate the key sites mentioned by Homer. Moving south into Syria, they then took careful measurements and drawings of the ancient Roman ruins of Palmyra and Baalbek. The results of these were published in 1753 and 1757 in both English and French editions and were among the first systematic publications of ancient buildings. Both works were of great influence on neoclassical architecture in Britain, Continental Europe and America. From 1753 to 1756, Wood was the tutor and travelling companion (or Bear-leader as such men were known at the time) of the young Duke of Bridgewater, the richest peer in England, in making the Grand Tour. In 1756 he was appointed Under Secretary to the Secretary of State for the Southern Department, who was initially Pitt the Elder. It was to Wood that Granville famously quoted an appropriate passage from Homer's Iliad as he signed the Treaty of Paris on his deathbed in 1763 (Wood published an essay on Homer in 1765, which stated that true knowledge can come only after one has had an opportunity to evaluate one's own society in relation to others). In 1764, following the instructions of Secretary of State Halifax, Wood acted under a general warrant to seize the papers of John Wilkes, who subsequently won damages of 1000 from him for trespass. In 1761 Wood was elected Member of Parliament for the Duke of Bridgewater's pocket borough of Brackley in Northamptonshire, which he continued to represent until his death. He was also Master of the Revels in Ireland, and at one point it was rumoured that he would be appointed Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, but the Lord Lieutenant objected to Wood's "public and private character" as well as his "mean birth", and the appointment was never made. Tomb of Robert Wood, Putney Old Burial Ground After his death on 9 September 1771, Wood was buried near his home in Putney at Putney Old Burial Ground, in a white marble sarcophagus engraved with an epitaph written by Horace Walpole. He had married Ann, the daughter of Thomas Skottowe, with whom he had two sons and a daughter. One son Robert was also an MP. (Wikipedia)___________________________ James Bruce (14 December 1730 27 April 1794) was a Scottish traveller and travel writer who spent more than a dozen years in North Africa and Ethiopia, where he traced the origins of the Blue Nile. James Bruce was born at the family seat of Kinnaird, Stirlingshire, and educated at Harrow School and Edinburgh University, and began to study for the bar, but his marriage to the daughter of a wine importer and merchant resulted in him entering that business instead. His wife died in October 1754, within nine months of marriage, and Bruce thereafter travelled in Portugal and Spain as part of the wine trade. The examination of oriental manuscripts at the Escorial in Spain led him to the study of Arabic and Ge'ez and determined his future career. In 1758 his father's death placed him in possession of the estate of Kinnaird. On the outbreak of war with Spain in 1762 he submitted to the British government a plan for an attack on Ferrol. His suggestion was not adopted, but it led to his selection by the 2nd Earl of Halifax for the post of British consul at Algiers, with a commission to study the ancient ruins in that country, in which interest had been excited by the descriptions sent home by Thomas Shaw (16941751), who was consular chaplain at Algiers. Having spent six months in Italy studying antiquities, Bruce reached Algiers in March 1763. The whole of his time was taken up with his consular duties at the piratical court of the dey, and he was kept without the assistance promised. But in August 1765, a successor in the consulate having arrived, Bruce began his exploration of the Roman ruins in Barbary. Having examined many ruins in eastern Algeria, he travelled by land from Tunis to Tripoli, and at Ptolemaida took passage for Candia but was shipwrecked near Benghazi and had to swim ashore. He eventually reached Crete, and sailing thence to Sidon, travelled through Syria, visiting Palmyra and Baalbek. Throughout his journeyings in Barbary and the Levant, Bruce made careful drawings of the many ruins he examined. He also acquired a sufficient knowledge of medicine to enable him to pass in the East as a physician. In June 1768 he arrived at Alexandria, having resolved to endeavour to discover the source of the Nile, which he believed to rise in Ethiopia. At Cairo he gained the support of the Mamluk ruler, Ali Bey. After visiting Thebes, where he entered the tomb of Ramesses III, KV11, he crossed the desert to Kosseir, where he embarked in the dress of a Turkish sailor. He reached Jidda in May 1769, and after a stay in Arabia he recrossed the Red Sea and landed at Massawa, then in possession of the Turks, on 19 September. He reached Gondar, then the capital of Ethiopia 14 February 1770, where he was well received by the n?gusä nägäst Tekle Haymanot II, by Ras Mikael Sehul, the real ruler of the country, by Wozoro Aster, wife of the Ras (whom Bruce calls "Esther"), and by the Ethiopians generally. His fine presence (he was 6-foot 4 inches high), his knowledge of Ge'ez, his excellence in sports, his courage, resource and self-esteem, all told in his favour among a people who were in general distrustful of all foreigners. He stayed in Ethiopia for two years, gaining knowledge which enabled him subsequently to present an accurate picture of Ethiopian life. Determined to reach the source of the Blue Nile, and after recovering from malaria, in October 1770 Bruce decided to set out again. This time he travelled with his own small party, which included Balugani and a Greek named Strates. The final march was made on 4 November 1770. Late in the afternoon, after having climbed to 9,500 feet, Bruce's party came upon a rustic church, and the guide, pointing beyond it, indicated a little swamp with a hillock rising from the centre. That, he declared, was the source of the Nile. On 14 November 1770 he reached Gish Abay, the source of the Lesser Abay. When they reached the springs at Gish, James Bruce determined to be merry, picked up a half coconut shell he used as a drinking cup. Filling it from the spring he oblidged Strates to drink a toast to "His Majesty King George III and a long line of princes" and another to "Catherine, Empress of all the Russians" this last was a gesture to Strates' Greek origin, since Catherine the Great was just then at war with the Turks in the Aegean Sea. More toasts followed. Though admitting that the White Nile was the larger stream, Bruce argued that the Blue Nile was the Nile of the ancients and thus he was the discoverer of its source. Setting out from Gondar in December 1771, Bruce made his way, in spite of enormous difficulties, by Sennar to Nubia, being the first European to trace the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile. He was detained in Al Qadarif (which he calls "Teawa") by its governor Fidele, until a combination of cunning, diplomacy and a show of force by his friend the Ethiopian governor of Ras el Fils induced Fidele to release him. Once in Sennar he found himself detained there, and on the night of 25 August the house he was staying in was attacked by thieves, whom Bruce for good reason suspected to be acting with the knowledge, if not on the orders of King Ismai'l. As he and his companions crossed the desert on the western side of the bend of the Nile, they came across the corpses of the caravan of the Muslim dignitary Mahomet Towash they had hoped to travel with despite his status, they had been waylaid, robbed, and killed by the local tribesmen. On 29 November 1772 he reached Aswan, presently returning to the desert to recover his journals and his baggage, which had been abandoned in consequence of the death of all his camels. Cairo was reached in January 1773, and in March Bruce arrived in France, where he was welcomed by Buffon and other savants. He came to London in June 1774, and was interviewed by James Boswell, who published a lengthy account of his travels in the London Magazine. Offended by the incredulity with which his story was received, Bruce retired to his home at Kinnaird. It was not until 1790 that, urged by his friend Daines Barrington, he published his Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, In the Years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1772 and 1773, but was assailed by other travellers as being unworthy of credence. The substantial accuracy of his Ethiopian travels has since been demonstrated, and it is considered that he made a real addition to the geographical knowledge of his day. (Wikipedia)

J. A. Boener. Daniel Preisler (1666-1737, vgl Thieme-Becker XXVII 373/74), gestochen v. Hieronymus Bölmann (tätig um 1710-1730, vgl. ThB IV 201) ... " (H.       - Titles in red & black. Six vols. 4to, cont. vellum over boards (a few bindings a little warped). Wolfenbüttel: 1717-18-19-21-22-24. First edition of this catalogue which rarely appears on the market. Fabricius (1644-1729), was a leading classical philologist and inspector of the schools of the Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg. This is "a biobibliographical dictionary. It is a roughly classified list of books owned by Johannes Fabricius, with brief but very valuable accounts of the life and writings of the various authors. Since larger and more recent reference works often do not mention these authors, who were chiefly minor sixteenth- and seventeenth-century scholars, Fabricius is likely to give helpful information. Fabricius was obviously more interested in giving this information than in making a catalogue of his library, for the Historia does not claim to be a complete catalogue."Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 7(& see pp. 11, 108, 186, & 204).       1717. In 8°, p. perg., pp. CCCXX. Edizione originale.

[28]+659+[11] pages with 4 plates and index; [10]+678+[6] pages with 4 plates (one folding) and index. Quarto (10" x 8") bound in half leather with raised spine bands in gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. (Streit-Dindinger VI, 1418.) Second edition of a 1689 history of missions to Japan prefaced with a general account of the country. Jean Crasset was an ascetical writer, born at Dieppe, France, 3 January, 1618 and died at Paris, 4 January, 1692. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1638, became professor of humanities and philosophy, was director for twenty-three years of a famous sodality of men connected with the professed house of the Jesuits in Paris, and was also a successful preacher. Crasset is the author of many ascetical works, among which are: Methode d'oraison; Considérationes chrétiennes pour tous les jours de l'année; La chrétienne in soli tude; Dissertation sur les oracles des Sibylles, which was vigorously attacked; Entretiens pour la jeunesse. He also published in 1689 a Historie de l'église du japon which has been translated into several languages but which is considered inferior to that of Charlevoix. Crasset's history was scarcely original, for it was drawn in great part from the work which Father Solier had issued in 1627; he merely retouched the style and continued the narrative from 1624 to 1658. The objection is made that the work lacks precision, is heavy, and is crowded with details. The author attributed the origin of the persecution of 1597 to the imprudence of the friars in making their religious ceremonies public. There is a posthumous work of his entitled La foy victorieuse de l'infidélite et du libertinage. On 9 September, 1656, the Bishop of Orléans issued an interdict against him for having in one of his sermons charged several ecclesiastics with sustaining the propositions condemned by the Bull of Innocent X, Cum occasione (31 May, 1653). The interdict was removed in the following February. Condition: Nicely rebound in half leather. Contents toned and damp-stained, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary stamp on titles else a very good set. Dreiseitiger gesprenkelter Rotschnitt. 8vo. "In 1595 Pineau demonstrated the vestigial foramen ovale in the adult heart, settling the question of the perviousness of the septum of the heart [...] [In 1597] he published this study in a frank treatise on virginity and the ways of losing it" (Garrison/M.). "The German edition was prohibited by the magistrates. The chief interest of the book now relates to the supposed parturition of the pubic bones during parturition [...] Pineau was a lithotomist and had the Collot family secret" (Osler). "Gives the first accurate description of the female pelvis and its deformities, and the effect of the latter in complicating labour" (Garrison/M.). Mahometanus dogmatice, et catechetice in lege Christi, Alcorano suffragante, instructus. Trnava (Nagyszombat), Friedrich Gall, 1717.

1717. 4to. (22), 196, (2) pp., final blank f. With several decorative woodcut head- and tailpieces. Near-contemp. calfskin binding with gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Only edition of this substantive anti-Ottoman pamphlet, a document of the late 17th and early 18th century religious and political upheavals in Eastern Europe, a theatre largely shaped by the Ottoman Empire. The Bulgarian author had survived Thököly's crushing of the Catholic-led revolt against Turkish rule in his native Chiprovets: "Krastyo Peikich, who had escaped to Hungary after the 1688 Tchiprovets uprising of Bulgarian Catholics and had become canon of Pecs in 1715, published his anti-Islamic 'Mahometanus dogmatice et catechetice in lege Christi' under the name Cristophorus Peichich in 1717 in Nagyszombat. In this book, Peikich advocated the right of his country to freedom; in the interest of a concentration of forces against the Turks he urged a rapprochement between the Eastern and Western Churches" (Kurucz/Szörényi, Hungaria litterata, Europae filia [Budapest 1985], p. 145). ITA

of the Nuremberg classical scholar Nikolaus Weber, with 51 entries by scholars, scientists, and artists of the time, including Andreas Celsius, Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr, and Christoph Jacob Trew. Nuremberg and Altdorf, 1717-1749.

1717. Oblong 8vo. 179 ff. with 51 entries and Weber's autogr. note of ownership on fol. 2r. Contemp. brown calf with richly gilt spine and covers. Brocade endpapers. All edges gilt. Unique scholars' album of the philologist Nikolaus Weber (1699-1751), headmaster of the Nuremberg Holy Ghost school, with entries by scholars mainly based at the Universities of Nuremberg and Altdorf. One of the most important among the contributors to this volume, almost all of which are biographically recorded, is the Swedish astronomer Andreas Celsius (1701-44), who on 22 July 1733 penned these lines: "Problema: Unam eandemq[ue] theologiam et religionem per universum terrarum orbem propagare. - Resolutio: Doceatur ubiq[ue] gentium Philosophia certa et solida" (Problem: How to spread the same theology and religion throughout the entire world? - Solution: Teach all peoples a certain and solid philosophy). On behalf of the Swedish king, Celsius had visited the principal observatories of Europe in 1732/33 to form an opinion of the current developments in astronomy. His scientific "Grand Tour" had also led him to Nuremberg, where he had spent three months at the home of the astronomer Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (see below) and had regularly participated in the specialist discussions hosted by the physician Christoph Jacob Trew (see below). 1733 is also the year of Celsius's "316 Observationes de Lumine Boreali", the first comprehensive treatise on the Northern Lights, published by Endter in Nuremberg. That year, Celsius also performed the first exact geographical measurement of the town's dimensions. - Celsius's host Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750), known for his 1750 "Atlas coelestis", contributed his entry many years before Celsius: on 17 July 1717, he dedicated a quotation from Seneca ("Animum sursum vocant initia sua", Epist. 79). The two opposite pages by Celsius and Doppelmayr are connected by a caption (by one of the two scientists): "Sic pagina jungit amicos" (Thus a page links friends). - Another important entry is that of the physician and botanist Christoph Jakob Trew (1695-1769), who had studied medicine in Altdorf and then undertook a three-year tour through Germany, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. In 1720 he settled in Nuremberg as a general practicioner and became a member of the most important scientific academies; his library, encompassing more than 34,000 volumes, was considered the greatest collection of naturalist literature of its time. No less important was Trew's autograph and correspondence collection with its natural-scientific focus, containing more than 19,000 letters by polymaths from the early Renaissance to Enlightenment (including Albrecht von Haller, Conrad Gesner, and Lorenz Heister). Today, Trew is frequently associated with his principal botanical work, "Plantae selectae" (1750-73). - For many entries, Weber later added the date of the contributor's death (if he outlived them), which in several cases offers a more precise date than hitherto available. - Other contributors include Siegmund Jakob Apin (writer, pedagogue, and classical scholar, 1693-1732), Andreas Christian Eschenbach (theologian and classical scholar, 1663-1722), Johann Wilhelm Feuerlein (theologian, 1689-1766), Christoph Fürer von Haimendorf (poet, 1663-1732), Gottfried Engelhart Geiger (pedagogue, 1681-1748), Johann Jakob Hartmann (theologian, 1671-1728), Georg Jeremias Hofmann (teacher of oriental languages and theologian, 1670-1732), Johann David Köhler (historian, 1684-1755), Michael Friedrich Lochner von Hummelstein (physician and polymath, 1662-1720), Bernhard Walther Marperger (theologian and Lutheran poet, 1682-1746), Jonas Meldercreutz (mathematician and bibliophile, 1713-85), Gustav Philipp Mörl (theologian and librarian, 1673-1750), Johann Heinrich Müller (physicist, astronomer, and mathematician, 1671-1731), Joachim Negelein (theologian and classical scholar, 1675-1749), Johann Heinrich Schulze (physician and classical scholar, 1687-1744), Christian Gottlieb Schwarz (classical scholar and historian, 1675-1751), Gottfried Thomasius (polymath and physician, 1660-1746), Johann Siegmund Wernberger von Wernberg (jurist, 1678-1737), Justin Wetzel (preacher and professor of history and politics, 1667-1727), Georg Karl Wölker (jurist, 1660-1723), and Johann Wülfer (classical scholar and professor of church history, 1651-1724). - Decorative binding insignificantly rubbed, otherwise splendidly preserved autograph album of enormous value for the history of science. Autographs by Celsius, Trew, and Doppelmayr are of the utmost rarity. - Detailed list available upon request.

Etching, 1717 circa, without signature. Example in the first state of two. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with margins, in excellent condition. It was included in Il Gran Teatro di Venezia ovvero descrizione esatta di cento delle più insigni prospettive e di altrettante celebri pitture della medesima città, published for the first time in 1717 by Lovisa, a Venetian publisher who worked in the first half of the XVIII century. Made up of 122 engravings, the work depicts details of the city and the major works of the Venetian artists. The Ponte dei Pugni is a Venetian bridge placed in the sestiere of Dorsoduro, nearby Campo San Barnaba. The bridge shows four foot prints, on the four vertices of the floor, realized on Istrian stone; it has been named after a long gone Venetian tradition: the Guerra dei pugni. The inhabitants of two opposing factions, the Castellani of San Pietro di Castello and the Nicolotti of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, used to fight over the bridge punching each other.
