London [1717, 1718]: H Rhodes, D. Brown, R. Sare, J. Nicholson, B. Tooke [Took] and G. Strahan., 1718. Seventh Edition. Original Full Calf, Gilt. Very Good. 6 9/16" Tall. Eight volumes, complete matching set. Volumes 1-4 and 7-8 with 1718 publication date, Volume One stated Nineteenth Edition on volume title page with 1718 date [this volume having appeared earlier and being reprinted prior to the other volumes), Volumes 2-4 and 7-8 stated Seventh Edition; Volumes 5 and 6 with 1717 date and stated Seventh Edition on title page, with publisher "Tooke" spelled as "Took". Despite the variation in dates and edition statements, In matching contemporary full calf bindings, 5 bands, red and black morocco spine labels, elaborate gilt tooling on spine and edges. An excellent set, light fraying at a few tips, bindings and hinges solid, gilt still bright, spine labels intact, light even foxing to text blocks, pages square and undamaged. The origins of the work are complex and disputable, but the manuscript by Marana survives at least for the early volumes, one or more of the later volumes likely being English additions. Important for the light it shows on what Europeans thought was happening, rather than for exact reporting on what was actually occurring. See Bibliographical Society of America LII (1958), PMLA LXXII (1957), Revue de litterature compares XXXII (1958), and the Times Literary Supplement 12/24/1982 and 7/1/1983 to appreciate the variety of views regarding the authorship of the later volumes. Defore wrote a continuation of this series in 1718, not present here.

An account of the erection, government and number, of charity-schools in Ireland: to which is added an appendix containing certain forms, &c. relating thereto.

Dublin: printed for J. Pepyat, bookseller, in Skinner-Row, 1717. 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, 44pp., with contemporary ink erasures and a marginal note, bound fairly recently in old-style quarter calf over marbled boards, vellum corners, spine simply gilt and labelled. A fine, crisp, copy. First edition. Edward Synge (1659-1741), archbishop of Tuam, had been installed as the chancellor of the parish of St. Werburgh, Dublin, in 1705, and for the following eight years was one of the most popular and effective clergymen in the city. In the present, really quite detailed account, Synge notes the spectacular rise of the charity school movement in Ireland. In 1708 there were 344 charity schools educating some 8264 children. By 1717 these figures had risen to 1248 schools providing places for 27,000 children. The author first addresses the need for charity-schools, where they might be located, rules that should be observed by 'the persons concern'd in charity schools', financial requirements, charitable subscribers, and suggests orders to be observed by the masters and mistresses. Children should attend school from 7 to 11 am and from 1 to 5 pm in the summer (to 4pm in the winter). Among other things, teachers should 'teach the children the true spelling of words, make them mind their stops, and bring them to read slowly and distinctly'. Thereafter, Synge gives an account of charity schools in the various Irish counties, an appendix (pp. 34-44) prints model forms for subscriptions, apprenticeships (boys), legacies, a 'fault bill'*, a list of suitable books, the costs of clothing both boys and girls, and recommendations for teachers and school housing. A salary of £8 per annum together with a school house, lodging, and garden 'may be sufficient for school masters in country towns and villages'. And the author concludes 'that the whole charge, of rescuing a poor child from the utmost misery, that can spring from poverty, ignorance and wickedness; and of putting him in a way, by the Grace of God, of being good and happy both here and hereafter, is only nine pounds; so much being sufficient, at the foregoing computation, for his cloathing and schooling for 5 years and for putting him apprentice at the end of that time'. * The 'Fault Bill' is a sample chart recording each pupil by name, the day of the week, and identifying what faults were committed by each child. Recordable faults included: 'absent from church', 'late at church', 'playing at church', 'late at school', 'absent from school, or truanting', 'cursing', 'swearing', 'stealing', 'unmannerly', and 'lying'.

After rededicating himself to the church and becoming an ordained priest at the age of fifty, Calderón de la Barca renounced writing secular comedies for commercial theatres. At the kingÂ’s insistence, however, he continued writing for the stage, devoting himself literarily to producing mythological plays for the palace theatres and to a particularly Spanish genre known as the auto sacramental— one-act allegories illustrating the mystery of the Eucharist— for open-air performance during the feast of Corpus Christi. This collection includes 72 such autos (almost all of the 74 by Calderón known to have survived) and their accompanying loas, or preludes. Ornamented with woodcut head- and tailpieces. Owner signature in Volume VI. Manuscript titling on spines of IV-VI in a different hand from I-III, though still contemporary.Text quite clean and fresh. Expected slight darkening to vellum.         Histoire de l'Église du Japon

Paris: François Montalant, 1717. 2 volumes. [28]+659+[11] pages with 4 plates and index; [10]+678+[6] pages with 4 plates (one folding) and index. Quarto (10" x 8") bound in half leather with raised spine bands in gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. (Streit-Dindinger VI, 1418.) Second edition of a 1689 history of missions to Japan prefaced with a general account of the country.Jean Crasset was an ascetical writer, born at Dieppe, France, 3 January, 1618 and died at Paris, 4 January, 1692. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1638, became professor of humanities and philosophy, was director for twenty-three years of a famous sodality of men connected with the professed house of the Jesuits in Paris, and was also a successful preacher. Crasset is the author of many ascetical works, among which are:Methode d'oraison; Considérationes chrétiennes pour tous les jours de l'année; La chrétienne in soli tude; Dissertation sur les oracles des Sibylles, which was vigorously attacked; Entretiens pour la jeunesse. He also published in 1689 a Historie de l'église du japon which has been translated into several languages but which is considered inferior to that of Charlevoix. Crasset's history was scarcely original, for it was drawn in great part from the work which Father Solier had issued in 1627; he merely retouched the style and continued the narrative from 1624 to 1658. The objection is made that the work lacks precision, is heavy, and is crowded with details. The author attributed the origin of the persecution of 1597 to the imprudence of the friars in making their religious ceremonies public. There is a posthumous work of his entitled La foy victorieuse de l'infidélite et du libertinage. On 9 September, 1656, the Bishop of Orléans issued an interdict against him for having in one of his sermons charged several ecclesiastics with sustaining the propositions condemned by the Bull of Innocent X, Cum occasione (31 May, 1653). The interdict was removed in the following February.Condition:Nicely rebound in half leather. Contents toned and damp-stained, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary stamp on titles else a very good set.

De Urinis et Pulsibus, de Missione Sanguinis de Febribus, de Morbis Capitis, et Pectoris. Opus Laurenti Bellini. Dicatum Francisco Redi. Cum Indice Locupletissimo.

Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden) Apud Johannem à Kerckhem 1717 - Editio Quarta Prioribus Correctior. 4° [ = 20,5 x15 cm]. Titelblatt mit Kupferstichvignette, 11 nn. Blatt, 679 S., 12 nn. Blatt. Ledereinband der Zeit. *** SCHÖNES EXEMPLAR DER BEDEUTENDEN SCHRIFT ZUR NIERENFUNKTION! *** "BELLINI TUBULI DES NIERENPARENCHYMS" *** Blake, S. 40. *** Waller 867 [zur 2. Auflage von 1698]. *** Hirsch, Bd. I, S. 383 ff. *** Lorenzo Bellini (1643 Florenz -1704 ebd.) J.Bleker, Gesch. Nierenkrankheiten, 53,56,61,62,79 - "Bellini realized the value of the urine as an aid to diagnosis and insisted on its chemical analysis in pathological conditions". Garrison & Morton 4162 (EA 1683). *** Gutes Exemplar mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren, Text fast fleckenfrei, Einband minimal berieben bzw. beschabt, Vorsatzblatt mit kleinem Randausschnitt. (Palau 94965, Sabin 25926, Nissen ZBI 1433, Hill p117) First English edition.Frézier was educated in Paris and served as lieutenant of infantry from 1702 til 1707, when he entered the engineer corps. In 1712 the government sent him to examine the condition of the Spanish colonies in America. After visiting the principal points in Peru, Chili and Brazil, he returned to Marseilles. He pointed out several mistakes in the "Relation" of Father Feuille, and this led to a bitter controversy between the two travelers. Frézier introduced the large Chili strawberry into France. First published in France in 1714. The first edition into English is preferable to the French original "because it contains Halley's.... postscript, which corrects certain geographical errors made by Frézier" (Hill). "The first part of this book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn... The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. Frézier, a man of observation, brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value. Much data is included about the native inhabitants.Condition: Rebacked with original spine label laid down; lacking frontispiece map and binder's leaf, free endpapers renewed, intermittent foxing else a very nice copy.

        Japanese Votive Slips Album

Dates of the slips range from late Edo to early Showa periods (1860s - 1930s.. Thick accordion style album of 145 Japanese senjya fuda ??? [lit. thousand shrines slips] or n?satsu ?? [literally votive slips] laid down on to the folded leaves of this attractive album. Slips are all in very good to excellent conditions. Patterned cloth covered boards. 19 x 13cm. A lovely collection beautifully presented. The very old custom of printing votive slips began when visitors to a shrine or a Buddhist temple stuck a paper slip with his/her name and address onto the building in commemoration of their visit, as well as in the hope of getting a divine favour. This custom became very popular in the mid-Edo period and the style of paper slips gradually changed from hand-written slips to colourful woodcut print votive slips. Shops as well as individuals came to produce decorative votive slips, and in the case of the slips printed by shops, they functioned as advertisements. As the votive slips became elaborate, they also became collectors' items. The majority of the slips in this album bear the names of shops and companies in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, there are a number of restaurants including many sushi shops, sweet shops [One such shop, Kohagi-do ??? in Shinbashi was in business until very recently), a kimono shop, a printing shop, a book shop [Hiroo Shoten ????? in Osaka which is still trading], a doll makers, and a fish shop. Another theme within the album are the very interesting slips printed by such individuals as: Hagino Ky?koku???? (Confucian scholar known for his eccentricity, 1717?-1817), Ichieisai Yoshitsuya ????? (ukiyo-e artist, 1822-66), Sany?tei Eny? ????? (rakugoka [comic storyteller], Ozawa Ichikawazu ???? (collector of items related to frogs, 1876-1960), Kawamura Meroji ????? (visual artist and cat lover, 1886-1959), and Nakamura Shikan ???? (Kabuki actor, 1831-99 [for Shikan IV] and 1866-1944 [for Shikan V]). Two slips depict westerners, one is named “Smith" and the other “Read”. One slip says “Beikoku ofuda hakase [American expert on votive slips] jutay? ?????????”. “Jutay?" was probably being the Japanese name of the American. The collection includes many large-size slips, most of which used the compositions of earlier ukiyo-e prints. A perfect example of this are the last thirty-five large-size slips which partially used the compositions of the series called Edo-no-hana meish?-e ??????? [Flowers of Edo: Paintings of Scenic Places] in the late Edo period. These votive slips are artistically charming and some have bold designs. There is one double leaf slip which shows a horse and was printed by T?to N?satsukai ????? [Tokyo Votive Slip Association]. Over the years it has become very fashionable to produce elaborate votive slips and for collectors to meet and exchange them. Since the early 19th century through to today there have been regular meetings, n?satsukai ???, for collectors to exchange votive slips. These charming slips remain popular with collectors even today. .

Collated complete. ----Hoover 581; Cobres p.17, n. 20; Sinkankas 4390; Ward & Carozzi 1541; DSB IX, p.309; Thorndike VI, 334: Wilson, Mineral Collecting, pp. 32-34. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of the superb catalogue of the Vatican 'armaria', a series of cabinets with drawers which housed Mercati's fossils, marbles, ores, shells, earth samples, salts, alums, gums and resins; of particular interest to gemologists are the fine illustrations of lapis lazuli, jet, amber (including the absurd depiction of a frog encased in amber), precious coral, pearls, and nacre. "The collection reflects the state of knowledge extant at the time and therefore includes objects of presumed magical or medicinal virtue as well as those which are correctly identified and described. The plates can scarcely be equaled for fidelity to originals and the exquisite care employed in their engraving and printing" (Sinkankas). Mercati (1541-1593) directed the botanical garden of the Vatican and soon became famous for his scientific achievements. "As a naturalist Mercati's greatest interest lay in collecting minerals and fossils; this collection later formed the basis of the work that has made him famous: Metallotheca (Rome, 1717)" (DSB). The work existed only in manuscript at the time of Mercati's death, but it was prepared for publication by Givanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720). In 1719 the work was reissued with a cancel title, a portrait of Lancisi added, and an appendix with most of Gaumier's plates in the main work re-engraved. Near Fine.

A Voyage to the South-Sea, and along the Coasts of Chili and Peru...

London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717. Quarto, with 22 maps and plans and 15 engraved plates and views; in contemporary calf, gilt, spine gilt in compartments with double labels. Rare: the first English edition, with a new postscript by Edmund Halley dealing with South American navigation. Frézier sailed under the Horn to reach the west coast of South America, and his description and maps (especially those of the west coast anchorages) were much used by later navigators. He gives good descriptions of Chile and Peru. One of his odder claims to fame is that he introduced the strawberry to Europe from Chile. It is illustrated here.'Frézier, a French royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defence against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations. The first part of the book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn and was used by contemporary and even by later navigators. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. Frézier, a man of observation, brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value. Much data is included about the native inhabitants... The first English translation contains the same engravings as the original, but is preferred to the latter because it contains a postscript by Edmund Halley (of comet fame) which corrects certain geographical errors... ' (Hill). An attractive copy in contemporary binding, slight wear to joints.

[20], 531 pp. Contemporary blind stamped pigskin over wooden boards with brass catches and clasps. Title somewhat stained, otherwise virtually unspotted and unstained. An exceptionally fine copy of a rare edition of the Church Index of Prohibited Books. ----This was something sparked off by the Reformation and first issued in 1543 and was then first published in 1559. Thereafter the office of the Apostolic Camera periodically published updated catalogues of books deemed to be dangerous to faith and morals. This particular issue reprints the 1710 Decree of Clement XI prohibiting discussion of the Coeremoniarum Sinensium, or Chinese Rites.         Nova Territori Erfordien in Suas Prefecturas.

Nuremberg. [Johann Baptist Homann.], 1717. A beautifully engraved hand coloured map of North East Germany showing the area around Erfurt in detail. In the centre of the map is a small plan of Erfurt, which is also shown as a panoramic view at the foot of the map and titled 'St. Petersburg'. An elaborate decorative title cartouche in the lower right corner depicts allegorical figures surrounded by the produce of the land including sheaves of wheat; a beehive; and a cornucopia of fruits. Cherubs holding a coat of arms float up from the scene on the right, while on the lower left a centaur sits meditatively beneath a pine tree amongst slaughtered cattle. Physical features of the area are illustrated and farming areas shown by fields which criss-cross across the map. A clear, dark impression, the work of an outstanding German cartographer who, in 1715, was appointed as imperial geographer by Emperor Charles VI. This map also includes "Schwan See" [Swan Lake] under a town of the same name, which has since disappeared. Hand coloured, two very minor splits at upper and lower edges on centre fold and not affecting engraved area, a handsome map, 54 x 61.5 cm. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 61880).

Containing several new experiments and curious observations relating to fruit-trees: particularly, a new method of building walls with horizontal shelters. Illustrated with copper plates. To which is added by way of appendix, a new and familiar way to find a most exact meridian line by the pole-star; whereby gentlemen may know the true bearings of their houses and garden walls, and regulate their clocks and watches, &c. To which is added, an appendix of the usefulness of the barometer; with some short directions how to make a right judgment of the weather. By John Laurence, M.A. rector of Yelvertost, in Northamptonshire

London printed for Bernard Lintott, between the Temple-Gates in Fleet-Street [through 1718] 1717 Three volumes in one: Fifth Edition of the first, Second of the second, First of the third. 8vo: [2, the frontispiece and title page may be cancels],vi (dedication to Henry, Duke of Kent, from The fruit-garden kalendar transferred here, as usual, to The clergy-man's recreation [ESTC Citation No. T30847]),[8],84, with a copper-engraved frontispiece by Simon Gribelin and a letterpress illustration; [18],115,[1], with a frontispiece, four folding plates (including the plate showing a method of finding the meridian line, often missing) and a letterpress illustration (in this edition [ESTC Citation No. T142272], the last '7' of the date on the title page falls below the first 't' of 'Lintott', and on p.5 the "B" of the signature is below the "a" of "acquainted" in the final line); [4],v,[1],146 (wanting final 3pp of the appendix, but with 7 extra pages of Lintot's catalog), [10]pp, with a folding copper-engraved frontispiece. Period Cambridge-style calf paneled in blind, very skillfully rebacked, spine in six compartments divided by raised bands ruled in gilt, red leather lettering piece gilt. An excellent copy, the binding tight and secure, text generally clean and free of foxing, plates good impression, barring the first frontispiece, which is a bit weak. Henrey, 937, 939 and 943. Janson, pp. 149-155. Near Fine The clergy-Man's recreation, first published in 714, was Laurence's first published treatise on gardening, and was devoted almost exclusively to culture and training of fruit trees, and is of special historical interest, according to Henrey, for its early mention of transmission of a viruses by grafting. The gentleman's recreation, giving " some additional improvements and observation" relating to fruit trees followed in 1716 and The fruit-garden kalendar in 1718. The very practical nature of Laurence's treatises made them extremely popular, including with the colonists in America.

        The Country Gentleman's Vade Mecum

London: Printed for William Taylor at the Ship in Pater-noster-row, 1717. First edition of this ambitious pocket guide to farming, hunting, fishing, building, and gardening, along with "Rules for Management of a Family" and a crisp summary of the natural order: "The Island of Great Britain is the largest in the World. . . . and is in all Respects much the richest." The handsome copper-engraved frontispiece depicts an idealized English country house, surrounded by neatly bordered fields, gardens, parks, pastures, and woods. Jacob punctuates his practical recommendations with frequent "legal observations," prefiguing his influential 1729 New Law-Dictionary, which would run through dozens of editions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Vade Mecum concludes with an ode to God's providential, pastoral design: "Sometimes you hunt, sometimes you shoot and course, / Sometimes you fish, and all without Remorse, / On healthful Banks over a plenteous Brook / You drop successfully your baited Hook." A near-fine copy, offering a detailed glimpse into Augustan country life. Twelvemo, full contemporary speckled calf, boards ruled in gilt, gilt-ruled raised bands, edges speckled red. Engraved frontispiece; decorative headpieces, initials, and tailpieces throughout text. Eighteenth-century ink ownership signature and early ownership label to front pastedown. Lightest shelfwear to binding, joints strengthened.

Calculus interlunii ecliptici e tabulis Philippi Lansbergii quod anno Christi 1724 . . . [Amsterdam?, ca. 1720]. 12mo & 8vo (14.5×8.5 cm). Latin manuscript in brown ink on paper providing information about and tables of data for lunar and solar eclipses, with 3 full-page astronomical diagrams. Contemporary gold-tooled mottled calf.

      - A nice astronomical manuscript in Latin giving information and tables of data about solar and lunar eclipses, illustrated with three full-page diagrams. The calculations are made for viewing from Amsterdam. Each of the three principal sections has a sort of title-page, all three given above. They concern the lunar eclipses of 16/27 March 1717 and 9/20 September 1718 (both clearly noted as past events) and the solar eclipse of 11/22 May 1724, which may have occurred after the manuscript was written. For this last, the manuscript refers to the tables of astronomical data compiled by the Dutch astronomer (Johan) Philip Lansberge (1561-1632) and published at Middleburg in 1632 and later editions. In very good condition, with only minor spotting and a couple small marginal stains. The binding is somewhat worn at the hinges and edges, and the mottling has slightly cracked the surface of the leather, but it still remains in good condition.
