First Edition. Title page red and black. Full sheepskin marbled period; Back to nerves tooled, red morocco title, roulette borders. Some scratches on the flat; two corners bare; a slight lack of bottom joint. Important and unusual story of the founding of the Latin churches and religious orders worldwide, the author even including India and America. In France, the author sets the story in all provinces and cities. At the same time this story doubles as a geographical interest, the author never failing to locate and describe the location of the birth of an order or a church, it is also a history of the saints and history everything short of each country, region or city; even heraldic appearance is far from being neglected as rich this item. chez François Sébastien Offray A Avignon 1716 Un vol. in Folio (36 x 23 cm) relié

Decii Junii Juvenalis et Auli Persii Flacci Satyrae

London - Jacob Tonson and John Watts, 1716 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarceearly eighteenth-century copy of Juvenal's Satires. Featuring an engraved frontispiece. In Latin. With an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. The Satires are a collection of satirical poems by the Latin author Juvenal written in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Juvenal is credited with sixteen known poems divided among five books; all are in the Roman genre of satire, which comprised a wide-ranging discussion of society and social mores in dactylic hexameter. These five books were discrete works, and there is no reason to assume that they were published at the same time or that they are identical in theme or in approach. The poems are not individually titled, but translators have often added titles for the convenience of readers. Condition: In a full speckled calf binding. Externally, sound with some rubbing to the extremities. Spine label missing. Joints cracked but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Slight age toning butvery clean throughout. Ink number to front pastedown. The top corner of the front free endpaper has been clipped. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Dissertatio Physica de Terra Australi quam

Small quarto, 24 pp., significant browning to several pages, but a handsome copy, tear to edge of title-page neatly repaired (not affecting text); unbound, with strip of old pink marbled paper protecting the spine. An excellent copy of a very scarce title.Rivinus is not known to have published many works.         Jushikei Hakki [trans.: Expression of the Fourteen Meridians]

16 full-page woodcut illus. in the text. 56 folded leaves. Three vols. in one. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed, one leaf with about five characters obscured due to a stain), orig. block printed title label on upper cover (rubbed & frayed), newly stitched in the oriental style. Tokyo: 1716. An early Japanese edition of one of the most important Chinese texts on acupuncture. Katsu "was a Chinese physician whose years are uncertain but who lived prior to the time of the Ming dynasty. He wrote a book on the introduction of the moxa system into Japan from China, the original Japanese edition of which was published in 1684 with the title Jushikei (or Jushikyo) hakki [Mestler is in error here; there were earlier editions]...A theoretical discussion, by Katsu, chiefly on acupuncture but equally applicable to moxa, not on how to cure but on the more fundamental nature of the subject, comprised the first part of that work. The first part discussed the fundamental belief of the Chinese and Japanese in a relationship between the internal organs and their diseases, and curative treatment for them at specific sites on the outside of the body. The second part, written by an unknown co-author, was subtitled Juishikei ketsu chi-ho and gave practical instruction. Several illustrations in this work show relationships between moxa or acupuncture sites and specific internal organs (e.g. between the hands and the lungs). Two drawings are especially interesting as showing external measurements of the human body, anterior and posterior aspects, referring to differences between lean and fat individuals and the influence of aging."-Mestler, "A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part II. Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Bathing, Balneotherapy and Massage. Nursing, Pediatrics and Hygiene. Obstetrics and Gynecology," pp. 473-74. The sixteen full-page woodcut illustrations explain the centers for acupuncture. The text, in three parts or volumes, concerns Yin and Yang through the arms and legs; circulation of the breath of life through the fourteen meridians; and the eight vital blood vessels. Very nice copy with some relatively inoffensive worming touching a few characters and images. .

A Second Tale of a Tub: or, The History of Robert Powel the Puppet-Show-Man

Printed for J. Roberts. First edition.. Spine rebacked; red leather label chipped with some loss; edges a little rubbed; very good copy.. Not in Teerink. 8vo, contemporary Cambridge style calf, red leather label, gilt lettering. Engraved frontis; imprimatur leaf. An attack on the controversial English statesman Robert Harley, for whom Swift had worked, by the diplomat and pro-Whig pamphleteer Burnet and his sometimes partner George Duckett, friend of Addison and commissioner of excise. Burnet and Duckett also collaborated on two weeklies, Pasquin and The Grumbler, and a pamphlet critical of Pope's Homer, The Homerides (1716), which earned them a place in the Dunciad Variorum. Here they tell the story of manipulative, greedy puppeteer, descended from a Roman henchman which is obviously based on Harley, who had just been sent to the Tower. Though not traditionally considered prose fiction, A Second Tale of a Tub is an early example of collaborative fiction.

        Chirurgia Curiosa ...

. Frankfurt - Leipzig: Michael Rohrlachs seel. - Siehe ausführlich zur Ohrenheilkunde - A.Politzer, Gesch. d.         Il mondo ingannato da falsi medici. Discorsi del Dottor Giuseppe Gazola, Veronese, Medico Cesareo, ed Accademico Alethofilo. (Opera postuma)

In zweyen Theilen.

- Nürnberg, J.D.Tauber, 1716, 4°, (44), 381, (11) + 358, 21, (18) pp., Frontispiz u. 9 doppelblattgrosse Kupferstichtafeln, Halbpergameinteinband. "Fabricius describes the extraction of teeth, showing good pictures of forceps. He also refers to the filling of teeth with gold leaves." Krivatsy NLM-Cat. no.3820; Hirsch-H. II, 461; DSB IV, 507; Leonardo, Lives of Master Surgeons, 559-61; Zimmermann-Veith, Great ideas in the history of surgery, 230-238; Bick, Source book of orthopedics, 43-44; Zeis 9,38,146,151.

Amsterdam: Francois l'Honore, 1716. Duodecimo, contemporary vellum, titled in ink on the spine, old patch to lower cover; a good copy. Law and politics in Fenelon's Minos utopia. 'Nouvelle edition' (according to the title-page) of this imaginary voyage, an early work in the tradition of Fénélon's {i Avantures de Télémaque}, and a continuation of its fourth book. Fénélon's {i Télémaque} was an idealised account of the Roman Republic, and one of the most important books in the French classical tradition of the imaginary voyage. Although the authorship of {i Les Loix du Roy Minos} remains unknown, it is one of the most inventive of the Fénélon imitations, a detailed investigation of the legal and political system of the utopian Minos: the focus on the courts and policing of the kingdom suggests an author associated with the legal system. The book is rare: OCLC notes a single copy (City University of New York Graduate Library).

Homann Johann Baptist, Norimberga.
