Original Watercolour Painting of a Prince of Wales Own 10th Royal Hussar on Horseback (Untitled)

[no date]. () Very good. No date. 6.5" X 8.5" Original Watercolour (16.5 X 21.5 cm). With blue matting in a 12.25" X 15" (31 X 38 CM) thin copper brushed wooden frame. A beautifully detailed and richly coloured painting in fine condition, signed by the artist on the bottom right corner. The frame is somewhat worn with some light chipping. The painting depicts a sharp and clean image of a man on horse back (in regimental dress) turning his head backward to glance at the ladies on horse back who have just rode past him. The countryside behind him is soft with rolling hills and light clouds. A beautiful image. The dress of the man signifies that of the 10th Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own) which was a cavalry regiment of the British Army from 1715 to 1969..

        Nouveau voyage autour du Monde

Rouen,: Robert Machuel le jeune & Eustache Herault, 1715.. Five volumes, duodecimo, with a total of 34 engraved maps, coastal profiles and harbour plans (12 folding) and 32 plates (13 folding) including engraved title pages and frontispiece for volume I-III; two of the title-pages a little chipped at one corner; contemporary French mottled calf, banded spines richly gilt, crimson morocco labels, from the Villeneuve library with engraved bookplates to all volumes. Rare: an attractive set of the first collected edition of Dampier in any language to include the related accounts of Cowley, Sharp and Wood. Most of the maps, coastal profiles, and natural history plates are accurate copies of the English originals, but this edition is notable for the addition of a small series of newly engraved views (perhaps based on the Dutch edition Nieuwe reystogt rondom de werreld, published between 1698 and 1704).Dampier's 'style is clear and simple, making his writings almost classical. A precursor of the Enlightenment, he was not interested in marvels, but in examination and description of natural phenomena. Through his writings, Dampier made known the profitable possibilities in the Pacific' (Hill, describing the collected English edition). It is interesting that it was not until 1729, some fourteen years after the present edition, that the London publishers Knapton prepared their famous four-volume edition of the collected Dampier, which also included the accounts of Cowley, Sharp and Wood.Borba de Moraes noted that part of the edition was printed by Robert Machuel and part by Eustache Herault.Borba de Moraes, I, pp. 205-206; Leclerc, 416; Sabin, 18383.

A Correct Chart of the Carribee Islands

London., 1715-50. Size: 525 x 430 mm. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Fine condition. Depicted with north to the right, extending from Puerto Rico to Venezuela, title cartouche at top centre. The map has a compass at sea, rhumb lines, anchorages and depth soundings. It was published in The English Pilot for Mount and Page, in John Seller's fourth book, covering American waters. The atlas was produced and published to counter the prevailing dominance and output of maritime material by the Dutch. Seller began his atlas in the 1670s, and it proved so popular that it ran to over 30 editions, the later ones produced some 100 years later. As a result many charts were re-engraved, or replaced entirely by more accurate examples.

TO THE HONOURABLE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS OF GREAT BRITAIN, IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED. THE HUMBLE PETITION OF WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, JOHN EVANS, JOHN NORBOURNE, DANIEL HALL, BENJAMIN DEVENISH, SAMUEL BALL, AND ALBION THOMPSON...[caption title]

[London? ca. 1715].. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Small folio. Antique-style three- quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Ornamental upper border. Minor foxing. Very good. A rare and early petition relating to British settlement in the eastern part of present-day Maine. The authors refer to petitioning "his Majesty in Council, on the 6th Day of December last, for having a Colony settled between New England and Nova Scotia" with "over one thousand disbanded men" and to be funded with the proceeds of a proposed coinage operation. The only copy of this document listed by OCLC and ESTC is at the New-York Historical Society, which estimates merely that the document was printed during the 1700s. The historical context, the text cited above, and discovery of this broadsheet among similar petitions dating almost exclusively to 1714 and 1715, however, make 1715 an extremely likely date of printing. In the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) the French ceded the land east of the Kennebec River (presumably the area in question here) to the British; this event and the reference to "disbanded soldiers" suggest that the War of the Spanish Succession had recently ended, which it finally did in 1714. George I succeeded Queen Anne in late 1714, meaning that the petitioning of "December last" could not have been earlier than that year. With the new monarchy and a major upheaval in the House of Commons following the general election of 1715, petitionary literature distributed in the lobby of Parliament surged, with this document almost certainly among the examples from that year. The petitioners, evidently officers who had served in the recent war, call attention to the fact that the lands they hope to settle "were formally survey'd, and given by King Charles the Second, to the Duke of York," and that the area has been confirmed as rich for farming. They ask that Parliament allow them to present their formal proposals for the settlement or, "if not thought proper to have a Colony settled in that part of North-America," at least still to grant them a contract to coin 1,000 tons worth of half-pence and farthings. A very important Maine document, one of only two surviving copies.

The ILIAD Of HOMER. Translated by Mr. Pope

London:: Printed by W. Bowyer, for Bernard Lintott,. 1715 - 1720.. Folio. 11-1/2" x 7-3/4". All volumes are 1st Folio edition (Griffith 42, 50, 78, 96, 115, 119). 6 volumes.. Period full paneled calf bindings, with spine labels to vols 1, 5 & 6 only. PO gilt stamped name [I Phelipps Y] to front boards.. Label to vol. 6 chipped. Some wear to spines, and joints tender. though bindings overall sound & quite appealing. Minor worming to. margins of vols. 1, 3, 5 & 6. Some gatherings a little browned, as. often found. Short tear to Vol II ffep. Period pos to front eps.. Withal, a Very Good set.. Pope, one of the leading literary figures of early 18th C England, enjoyed social success as well, and could count among his friends such great literary figures as Swift, Gay, and Congreve and 'saw much aristocratic society.' Of his character, the D.N.B. comments 'there is, in fact, no more difficult subject for biography, especially in a compressed form.... The truest statement seems to be that he was at bottom, as he represents himself in the epistle to Arbuthnot, a man of really fine nature, affectionate, generous, and independent; unfortunately, the better nature was perverted by the morbid vanity and excessive irritability which led him into his multitudinous subterfuges.' It has been commented that Pope could Ôhardly drink tea without a stratagem.Õ His devotion to literature was unremitting, 'he might have rivalled Chaucer in one century, and Wordsworth in another. As it was, his poetry is the essence of the first half of the eighteenth century.' & & "Idolatry of classical models was an essential part of the religion of men of letters of the day. Many of them, however, could not read Greek, and the old translations of Chapman, Ogilby, and Hobbes were old-fashioned or feeble in style. Many translations from the classics had been executed by Dryden and his school. But a Homer in modern English was still wanting. Pope's rising fame and his familiarity with the literary and social leaders made him the man for the opportunity. However, the translation must be considered not as a publisher's speculation, but as a kind of national commission given by the elegant society of the time to their representative poet. The first volume, including the first four books of the 'Iliad,' was issued in June 1715. The next three volumes appeared in 1716, 1717, and 1718, the last volume of the 'Iliad,' delayed by ill-health, family troubles, and the preparation of various indexes, appeared in May 1720." .         Principal Front of Kerhington Park in Oxfordshire

A wonderfully detailed architectural engraving by Colin Campbell  from his breathtaking book Vitruvius Britannicus, or the British Architect, Containing the Plans, Elevations, and Sections of the Regular  Buildings Both Publick and Private in Great Britain... , which was published in London in 1715-1767. Overall this print measures 21.5"x18".Colin Campbell was a Scottish-born architect who published the single most influential work of architecture published in the Georgian era. As the title suggests, the work focuses upon the writings of the Roman architectural author, Vitruvius, and testifies to Campbell's outright rejection of the French influence upon British architecture, so prevalent during the reign of the late Stuart monarchs.  The book champions the classical purity of line which pervaded the work of the seventeenth-century English court architect, Inigo Jones and the sixteenth-century Italian architect, Andrea Palladio, both considered exemplars of the style by Campbell. However, the book also represents the rise of the nobility and professional designer as arbiters of fashion, a facet of British culture previously dominated by royalty.  The British countryside, as we know it today, was the creation of the Georgian period, and the result of the  pursuit of profit and pleasure.  The nobility now enjoyed new found wealth largely due to the Seven Years? War when the Crown had given land to loyal supporters.  This land was mainly concentrated in large estates and its owners either sat in the House of Commons or knew people who did.  Thus, the land enclosure acts, which allowed for the most modern methods of farming, were easily passed and as a result agriculture became a profitable enterprise.  For the first time the elite could afford to build grand homes for themselves and to receive members of the royal family.  While ?Capability? Brown supplied the design for magnificently landscaped gardens, Campbell?s Vitruvius Britannicus provided a marvelous template for the design of the house. The first part of this ambitious work was completed in 1725.  The latter parts were completed after Campbell's death by John Woolfe and James Gandon, noted architects who felt the importance of continuing Campbell's project."Arader Galleries intends to have the lowest prices on ABE, Alibris, Biblio, AE, and Artnet while maintaining the highest levels of quality in the business for every offering.         [English Channel] Canalis inter Angliæ et Galliæ Littora. Pasecaert van 't Canaal tusschen Engeland en Vranckryck

[Amsterdam: Renard, 1715 or 1739]. Copper-engraved sea chart, with full orginal colour, in very good condition. 21 1/2 x 24 3/4 inches. A highly decorative sea chart of the English Channel, by the master-engraver Renard. The marine atlases of 17th and 18th century Holland were best sellers. The nation that led the world in overseas commerce also led in the arts of engraving and cartography. Plus, there was a large audience of mariners and mariners' parents, who needed to study the obscure straits and recently discovered island groups their sons were seeing. Louis Renard first published Atlas de la Navigation, et du Commerce qui se fait dans toutes les parties du monde in 1715. It was re-issued unchanged by the Ottens in 1739. The charts were printed from plates made by Frederick de Wit in 1675, Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas. These were corrected by Renard, using, primarily, van Keulen. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Ren 1.

Enstaka frontespiser skurna i yttermarginal.
