The Gentleman Accomptant, or, An essay to unfold the mystery of accompts : by way of debtor and creditor, commonly called merchants accompts, and applying the same to the concerns of the nobility and gentry of England... The second edition.

London: E. Curll, , 1715. Octavo (160 x 96 mm), pp. [2], v, [1] + 4pp. advertisments, 233, [7, contents]. Modern panelled sheep, antique style, spine blind-stamped in compartments. Folding table at p. 54. Ownership inscription "Samuel Bunting" dated 1723 at head of title. Advertisement leaves misbound. Some spotting and the odd rust spot, lightly toned; a very good copy. Second edition, first published in 1714, by the youngest son of Sir Dudley North. The style of North's discourse sets it apart from other literature of the period, being amusing and entertaining but nevertheless intelligent and informative. "North begins his work by explaining that through accidents he had discovered 'the wonderful virtue of a Regular Accompt' and as a result fallen in love with accounts .... North does not present bookkeeping as an easy subject to master and he stresses that it is practice rather than learning rules that is the guide to understanding." (Bywater and Yamey).

The Case of the People Called Quakers, with respect to many of their friends in South-Britain, and their friends in general in North-Britain, who conscientiously scruple the taking of the present affirmation

[London 1715 - Broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Moderate toning and foxing. Very good. Quakers Seek Relief on Affirmation In 1696, after experiencing decades of exclusion and imprisonment for conscientiously refusing to take loyalty and court oaths, Quakers were granted the right by Parliament to take a "solemn affirmation" in legal situations in place of an actual oath. Over the next two decades, numerous Quakers objected to the invocation of God's name in the official affirmation and refused it as they had the oath. In 1715, a bill was under consideration in Parliament to renew indefinitely the Quakers' right to the affirmation. The Quaker authors of the present petition support the bill but ask that it be amended with a revised affirmation that does not include the name of God.         KEI KETSU MITSU GO SHIU: COLLECTION OF CONFIDENTIAL TALKS ON THE ORDER OF LONGIT

[Kyoto 1715, Nakagawa Shigemon]. Brown stitched wrs., 3 vols. original covers, back of vol. 3 variant, woodblock printed. on hand-made paper, [114] double folded leaves or [228]p.,. some old minor worming, solid, original throughout. R A R E. AN EARLY TREATISE ON ACCUPUNCTURE, RENAL SYSTEMS & BLOOD A famous book on the subject, this is also similar to the one illustrated in Ilza Veith's THE YELLOW EMPEROR'S CLASS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE. Strangely enough, this early work was missed by the great Japanese medical book biblio- grapher: Gordon Mestler in his "GALAXY," but there are several other references to Okamoto & similar books on the JUSHIKEI [14 CHANNELS]. NOTES ON EARLY MEDICINE IN JAPAN. * Okamoto used alternate names: Ichiku, Ippo [shi] & Ittokusai in his career as a physician. He was the younger brother of the most famous & celebrated SHAKESPEARE OF JAPAN, Monzaemon Chikamatsu the great playwright. He was the disciple of Sam- paku Ajioka, a physician. After he was excommunicated by his master, he endeavored to popularize medical works among the masses, and was prolific writer of medical books. This work has 7 superb illustrations of the renal system, acupuncture points. Written in Kambun [Chinese], with Furigana grammar & sounds added so Japanese can read & understand this text. * Quite early monographic study of the therapeutic & practical application of acupuncture, utilizing detail diagrams show- ing the renal system its treatment & the "29 Difficult Acupuncture Points" the "14 Major Channels [JUSHIKEI]." This work has drawn on the Chinese classic "I Tsung Pi Tu," compiled about 1575 with similar illustrations used in the "Ling Shu Su Wen Chieh Yao" and other Chinese medical works on acupuncture and medicine. An historic look at early Chinese influenced medical practice in Japan. * This extremely rare illustrated work deals with the recognition of and curing of renal problems. A most fascinating early illustrated resource. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: W. N. Whitney: NOTES ON THE HISTORY OF MEDICAL PROGRESS IN JAPAN, in the Chinese and Japanese book index as item 494, with a wrong date of 1716. * Ilza Veith:THE YELLOW EMPEROR'S CLASS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE * Gordon Mestler: A GALAXY OF OLD JAPANESE MEDICAL BOOKS WITH MISCELLANEOUS NOTES ON EARLY MEDICINE IN JAPAN, NOTES ON EARLY MEDICINE IN JAPAN see p.474-476 & plate I, figure B for similar illustrations and entries, as well as other entries on pp.126 & 132. * Color scans can be sent by e-mail.         THE CHURCHES QUARREL ESPOUSED: OR, A REPLY IN SATYRE, TO CERTAIN PROPOSALS MADE, IN ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION, WHAT FURTHER STEPS ARE TO BE TAKEN, THAT THE COUNCILS MAY HAVE DUE CONSTITUTION AND EFFICACY IN SUPPORTING, PRESERVING, AND WELL-ORDERING THE INTEREST OF THE CHURCHES IN THE COUNTRY

Boston: BIBLE in Cornhill, 1715. 12mo. Modern calf in period style, over original birch boards, with original wastesheet pastedowns. Minor binding wear, margins trimmed a bit close in places, shaving a few letters and catchwords, small paper repair to upper forecorner of leaf C4, only evident on recto, a bit tanned. Overall very good. With contemporary ownership signature of Samuel Whitwell, an 1802 notation from an Andrew Grimes who bought the book at auction, and a 20th-century bookplate from the Zion Research Library. Second edition, after the virtually unobtainable first New York edition of 1713. The present pamphlet was issued in response to an attempt by the Mathers and others to initiate a movement to establish associations of clergy to exercise functions usually left up to individual churches. Wise has since been called the "first great American democrat," due to his argument that the ultimate power of the churches should rest with the congregation and not with their ministers or an association of ministers. "The People...are the first Subject of Power...a Democracy in Church or State is a very honourable Government." Wise's influential A VINDICATION OF THE GOVERNMENT OF NEW-ENGLAND CHURCHES (Boston, 1717) is the famous statement of his belief in Congregational polity.

Plan du Saint Sepulchre de Notre Seigr. Jesus-Christ situé en la Terre Sainte sur le Mont Calvaire dans la Cité de Jerusalem

Paris, 1715. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 15.5 x 19". This elaborate and striking engraving communicates the geography, culture, and history of the city of Jerusalem. In doing so, it touches on almost all of its medium's 18th century uses, including map, architectural rendering, town plan, and pictorial representation. Its primary component is a floor plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre labeled down to the finest detail, encompassing chapels, thrones, columns, decorative mosaics, and sites of relics, among more. An elevation of Holy Tomb fills the space of the rotunda. Three insets surround the plan, their shapes complementing the geometry of the church. They feature a plan of the Temple of Solomon, a plan of the city of Jerusalem, and a Map of the Holy Land. These four renderings, taken together, are furthermore framed by a border of remarkable design. At the top, scenes portray from left to right the crucifixion and the resurrection. On the remaining three sides, the stations of the cross appear along a stone path, with each group of weary cross-bearers described with a unique emotional inflection. De Fer's strategy of filling negative space with a texture of engraved lines not only helps these fine details stand out, it also contributes to the gravity with which they are conveyed. Made while de Fer was the official geographer to Louis, Dauphine of France, it is possible that this work helped him gain the position of official geographer to the Pope in 1720. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a prolific cartographer, engraver and publisher who took over the family map business from his mother when she retired in 1687. The business flourished and he gained a great reputation in his lifetime and was appointed 'Geographer to the King' in 1690.

SIR JAMES ST. CLARE, BART. PETITIONER. }{ SIR ROBERT GORDON, SITTING MEMBER FOR THE SHIRE OF CAITNESS. THE PETITIONER'S CASE [caption title].

[London. ]. 1715 - Broadsheet. [1]p., plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Small folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Minor foxing. Very good. An unrecorded British petitionary leaflet protesting the recent election of the young Sir Robert Gordon to Parliament for Caithness in Scotland. The petitioner, Sir James St. Clare (or Sinclair), lost to Gordon in the February election and argues here that his opponent was not a valid candidate, being "an Infant, not Nineteen Years of Age," and unable to prove any land holdings in Caithness that would qualify him to be elected. St. Clare notes that he traveled "Five Hundred Miles to make good this his just Complaint." He was evidently rebuffed, however, as Gordon would serve as MP for Caithness from 1715 to 1722. Sir Robert Gordon (1696-1772) was the 4th Baronet of Letterfourie, Sutherland. This extremely rare document is among the first examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons following the accession of King George I in 1714 and the Whig Party's massive victories in the elections of 1715.

THE CASE OF SIR THOMAS CLARKE, AND JOHN BOTELER ESQUIRE, AND OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE TOWN OF HERTFORD, PETITIONERS; AGAINST CHARLES CAESAR, AND RICHARD GOULSTON, ESQUIRES, SITTING MEMBERS [caption title]

[London, 1715. Dbd. Folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of left margin excised, with no loss to text. Light foxing, else near fine. A rare and interesting document relating to the ongoing controversy between Sir Thomas Clarke, Charles Caesar, and others in their elections to Parliament during the early 18th century. Charles Caesar (1673-1741), a Jacobite and Tory from a prominent Hertford family, first entered the House of Commons in 1701 as a member for the borough of Hertford. Subsequent elections for the same seat resulted in petitions to the House of Commons from opponents over conflicting views on whether non-resident freemen could cast valid votes. After serving with Sir Thomas Clarke in 1707-08, Caesar lost to Clarke in 1708, regained his seat from Clarke in 1710, and, after being re-elected in the important 1715 election that swept the Whigs into power, lost his seat by petition amidst charges of bribery and fraud. Caesar won his seat back from Clarke in 1722, whereupon a year later his election was again overturned and Clarke took his place. In 1727, Caesar ran instead to stand for the county of Hertfordshire, a position he won and held for the remainder of his life. An early example of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. ESTC records only three copies, two at Oxford and one at Harvard.

TO THE HONOURABLE THE KNIGHTS, CITIZENS AND BURGESSES IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED, &c. THE HUMBLE PETITION OF CAPTAIN ROBERT GREGORY, ONE OF THE OFFICERS THAT SERVED IN THE LATE SIEGE OF LONDONDERRRY, IN THE BEHALF OF THE CROWN, &c. [caption title]

[Dublin, 1715. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Last line of text on recto and half of docket title on verso lost to close trimming. Light foxing. Overall very good. A rare petitionary leaflet relating to the Siege of Derry and fraudulent claims made to Parliament for compensation. The author, Captain Robert Gregory, defended Londonderry during the siege by Jacobite forces during the Williamite War in Ireland in 1688-9, as certified by Governors John Michelburne and George Walker, in a document dated December 10, 1689 and reproduced at the conclusion of this petition. When, a quarter-century later, Gregory arrived in London to seek the pay due for his service, he discovered that massive fraud had been committed by various people claiming to have served as officers in the same siege. He prints here an abstract of pay due to the Garrison of Londonderry for the four months of the siege (Parliament was currently mistakenly basing their pay on six months) and decries the frauds' cost to the true defenders and victims of the city: "[S]everal Thousand Persons suffered by that Siege; many of them now Old and Lame, and many Widows, and the Orphans of them that died there, are now in great Misery and Distress: All whose Hopes and Dependence is on this Honourable House for Relief; which otherwise must perish, after 26 Years patient Attendance." ESTC records only one copy, at the Royal Irish Academy (listed in two records) for which the incorrect imprint is assigned. Working from the printed date of the certificate by the Governors of Derry reprinted at the end of the document, the record lists a printing date of 1689. The text of the document, however, refers to the victims of the siege "26 Years patient," indicating a date of 1715. A very rare petition and informative record of the Siege of Derry, printed in the early days of lobbying literature, which began to proliferate in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715.

THE CASE OF GREAT-BRITAIN, IN RELATION TO HIS MAJY.'S OFFICE OF ORDNANCE, REPRESENTED BY BENJAMIN WITHALL, ENGINEER [caption title]

[London, 1715. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Some foxing. Very good. A rare political leaflet alleging frauds and abuses by the British Board of Ordnance in 1715, George I's first full year as king. The author, engineer Benjamin Withall, shows that the Office of Ordnance's estimate for land service for 1715, a year of peace, is more than triple that of 1714, the final year of the War of the Spanish Succession. Arguing that the budget should not be much more than one-fifth the present estimate of £170,991, Withall petitions Parliament to allow him to interrogate members of the Board regarding their "strange" and "marvellous" calculation. This is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. ESTC lists three copies, at the Goldsmiths' Company, University of London, and Oxford.

MEMORIAL CONCERNING THE DIFFERENCE OF THE CUSTOM AND DUTIES ON SOPE IMPORTED, AND THE DUTIES IMPOSED ON THAT MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN [caption title]

[London, 1715. Small folio. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Trimmed close, with loss to docket title. Some foxing. Very good. A rare and detailed petition to Parliament charging that the prohibitively high tariff on imported soap has created a black market for soap imports that is driving domestic soap manufacturers out of business. The decline in domestic soap manufacture, the authors argue, is also having detrimental effects on the commerce and industries it supports, including "the Trades to Russia and the Baltick for Pot-ashes and Clapboards, the Straits for Oyl, New England and Newfoundland for Whale and other Fish Train, and the Fishery on the Coast of the Kingdom...which yields large Quantities of Fish-Oyl." The document also contains an interesting economic history of the soap trade between England and Scotland before unification. The petition is among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons around the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. Rare, with only one recorded copy, at the Goldsmiths' Library at the University of London.

Recueil de cent estampes représentant differentes nations du Levant. [With, part two:] Explication des cent estampes qui représentent les costumes des differentes nations du Levant. Avec de nouvelles estampes de ceremonies turques qui ont aussi leurs explications

Paris, 1715. Folio. (19 3/4 x 13 inches). Engraved title, 102 engraved plates (comprising 100 numbered plates and 2 unnumbered, 3 double-page), one leaf of engraved music. Contemporary red morocco, covers ruled in gilt, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, black morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers (expert restoration to the joints) Provenance: Jacob Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone (armorial bookplate on verso of the title) A lovely copy of Le Hay and Ferriol's famous work depicting the costume of the Levant: this copy bound in 18th century red morocco. The plates are based on paintings in the collection of the Marquis de Ferriol. In 1707, Ferriol commissioned Jean Baptiste van Mour to paint one hundred pictures of different officials and races in their costumes: the chief eunuch; a Turkish man cutting himself to show his love for his mistress; a Jewish woman taking goods to Turkish harems; a Greek bride; a Turkish women at leisure; Albanians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Persians and Arabs. When the paintings were complete, Ferriol helped le Hay to publish the present engravings of the pictures. Le Hay's work was an instant success and the plates quickly became the principal source of turqueries for artists and publishers throughout Europe. In recognition of van Mour's talents, he was granted the unique post of `Peintre ordinaire du Roi en Levant' in 1725.         A New and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great Britain on ye continent of North America containing Newfoundland, New Scotland, New England, New York, New Jersey, Pensilvania, Maryland, Virginia and Carolina. According to the newest and most exact observations

London: "Sold by H. Moll over against Deverux Court on the Strand", 1715. Copper-engraving, with period outline hand-colouring, on two joined sheets, overall size 41 1/2 x 24 7/8 inches. Expert restoration to the upper left side north of Lake Huron. Rare issue of the famous Beaver map: Stevens & Tree's first state. "One of the first and most important cartographic documents relating to the dispute between France and Great Britain over boundaries separating their respective American colonies ... The map was the primary exponent of the British position during the period immediately following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713" ( Degrees of Latitude). The British colonies according to British claims are outlined in red, with the French outlined in yellow. All territory south of the St. Lawrence River and eastern Great Lakes is shown as British. Numerous notations relating to territorial claims, Indian tribes, the fur trade, and the condition of the land cover the face of the map. This map shows the early eighteenth century postal routes in the British colonies, and is frequently called the first American postal map. There are four insets, including a large map of coastal South Carolina, and a plan of Charleston. At lower left is a map of Florida and the Deep South, which is based on a map by Thomas Nairne, the Indian agent for South Carolina. The most striking feature is the large vignette which gives the map its popular name. It consists of an early view of Niagara Falls, with a colony of beavers at work in the foreground. Pritchard holds that the beaver "was an appropriate image for the North American map for two reasons: the animal's importance to the fur trade, and its industrious nature." The petitioner, Sir James St. Sir Robert Gordon (1696- 1772) was the 4th Baronet of Letterfourie, Sutherland. This extremely rare document is among the first examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons following the accession of King George I in 1714 and the Whig Party's massive victories in the elections of 1715.

THE CASE FOR FRANCIS BEAUMONT, UNDERTAKER FOR FORAGE, DELIVERED TO THE FORCES IN FLANDERS IN THE YEARS 1711/12 [caption title]

[London, 1715. Dbd. Two contemporary manuscript corrections. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of inner margin excised, with no loss to text. Mild foxing. Very good. A rare document lobbying Parliament for payment to Francis Beaumont, who supplied British troops in Flanders with fodder during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1711 and 1712. Beaumont had contracted with the Duke of Marlborough to provide the forage with the understanding that he would receive an advance payment before the winter of 1711 and the remaining payment due one month after delivery. Although he never received the advance payment, Beaumont still provided the forage, yet still had not received any payment three years after the fact. As a result, Beaumont, "as well as many more families in Holland, Flanders and Brabant," were left in crippling debt and faced ruin. An early example of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. Rare, with ESTC and Hanson recording only one copy, at Oxford.
