        Imago Provinciae Pedemontanae

Rara. Milano Milan 330 225

A Voyage to the South Sea.

London: B. Lintot and R. Gosling, 1712. (22), 456, (12) pp. b/w folding map as frontispiece. b/w plates, folding maps in text. One of the classic South Seas privateering voyages, and the source for "Robinson Crusoe." "Edward Cooke was second captain on board the 'Duchess', the ship which accompanied the 'Duke', both under Captain Woodes Rogers, on a privateering voyage around the world... It is generally accepted that Daniel Defoe used this account of Alexander Selkirk's years on Juan Fernandez Island for his 'Robinson Crusoe' as it was the first book containing it."— See Hill 372 who notes that this first edition was "hastily produced ... in order to beat Woodes Rogers's account to the market." See also Streeter IV, 2428. Howes, C-733. NMM Catalog IV, 99. First edition of a classic account, bound in later full calf with raised bands and spine label. Some rubbing. Front hinge weak but holding. Small spot on frontispiece map, owner's signature on title page, else text and plates clean.

1712. ZOLLER, Joseph. ConCeptVs ChronographICVs De ConCepta SaCra DeIpara. Udalricum, & Afram, Augustae Vindelicorum. [28], 353, [19] pages. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait by Philipp Jacob Leidenhoffer after Johann Asem and 100 engraved emblems within the text. Folio, 310 x 201 mm, bound in old vellum. Augsburg: Michael Labhart, 1712. |~||~||~||~||~| A fascinating, rare and unusual chronogrammatic emblem-book, with over seven hundred acrostics in the form of Roman numerals, and illustrated by one hundred engraved emblems. All of the acrostics are thinly disguised by typography, and when the Roman numerals are added together they all amount to the same number (or year?): 1712. Zoller's ConCeptVs was first published in 1712 (as was his other emblem book, the Mira Satis), but the full significance of this date is not yet clear. As the Cabbalists have asserted, "Secret mysteries are woven in the numbers of letters." Both Landwehr and Praz catalogued the ConCeptVs, yet failed to understand the importance of the typographical evidence. It may be that these acrostics are recorded here for the first time. There are other anomalies: the subjects of these emblems are surprisingly secular, even profane, for a Benedictine work of this nature. Furthermore, the frontispiece and first emblem are signed: "Johann Assem" and "I.C. Banawiz." These names are unrecorded in T.-B. and elsewhere and we believe that they may be anagrams for someone else. And yet the frontispiece to the ConCeptVs was engraved by Philipp Jakob Leidenhoffer (d. 1714), a known Augsburg engraver who specialized in allegorical work. What is even more puzzling is that the name "I.C. Banawiz" reappears below the frontispiece to Zoller's Mira Satis of 1712, which was engraved by another known Augsberg engraver, namely Johann Heinrich Störchlin (1687-1737). The engraved title is a splendid depiction of chapter 11 of the Apocalypse, with the seven-headed dragon appearing before the Virgin Mary, and being attacked by St. Michael and the angels, all bearing shields with chronograms. A large and unusual format for an emblem book, with only seven copies located in the US by OCLC, Columbia, Yale, Penn State, SMU, Getty, Cal State and Illinois. In fine state, with an old, barely visible water stain in the lower margin. PROVENANCE: From the library of Franz Wilhelm Flexeder (seal-maker at Augsburg), with manuscript ex libris on front paste-down and ex libris, H.P.Kraus (and therefore now with a double Kraus provenance). Not in Rümann, von Faber du Faur, or Heckscher-Sherman. Cf. Landwehr, German 660-1 and Praz p. 543.

Four Treatises Concerning the Doctrine, Discipline, and Worship of the Mahometans [...]. London, J. Darby for B. Lintott, 1712.

1712. 8vo. 85, (11), 254 pp. Contemp. boards; spine rebacked with calf; giltstamped spine label. All edges red. Four important 17th and 18th century Western treatises on Islam, uniting works by Adrian Reland, Albert Bobovius, and Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz. Reland's two works in especial, first published in 1705, were considered a groundbreaking achievement: the first contains a brief dogmatic treatise (translated from an Arabic ms.), providing a Muslim self-portrait, while the second rectifies prevalent misconceptions about Islam (cf. Fück). The material, including translations of many passages, was drawn from original sources, chiefly from the 11th-century philosopher Ahmad ibn al-Husayn Abu Shuja` al-Isfahani (cf. Quérard, La France litt. VII, 512). Adriaan Reelant (1676-1718) held the chair of oriental languages at the University of Utrecht. The third part, originally published in Latin (Oxford 1690) as "Tractus de Turcorum liturgia", also discusses the pilgrimage to Mecca and includes notes by Thomas Hyde. The fourth part, by Mathurin Veyssière de Lacroze, was first published in his "Dissertations historiques sur divers sujets" (Rotterdam, 1707; cf. Quérard IV, 381). The present translation includes "a letter from Mr. Leibnitz to the author" (pp. 245-254). - From the library of the British philosopher of religion, David Arthur Pailin (b. 1936), with his bookplate and notes laid in. Chauvin XII, 1384. OCLC 15270828. Cf. Fück 102 (Reland). Not in Brunet.

Milano Milan 340 240

London Lintot 1712 - First edition. 8vo. With engraved folding map frontispiece, 2 further folding maps and plans, 17 engraved plates and maps, several of fish and other natural history subjects, contemporary panelled calf, neat repairs to joints and extremities, an excellent example. The scarce one-volume true first edition, hastily produced to beat Rogers' account to the market. Edward Cooke served as first mate on the Dutchess under Woodes Rogers' general command, in a privateering expedition that included parts of the West Coast of the Americas. Their chief goal in 1708 was to capture the Manila treasure ship as it approached Acapulco. Cooke's voyage is generally accepted as the probable source for Robinson Crusoe, with Defoe using Alexander Selkirk's account of his years on Juan Fernandez Island as related by Cooke. Apparently there was considerable rivalry between the publishers of Cooke's account and those of Rogers' account to be the first to market, resulting in this one-volume edition with the second portion of the voyage compressed at the end. cf.
