Milano Milan 340 240

London Lintot 1712 - First edition. 8vo. With engraved folding map frontispiece, 2 further folding maps and plans, 17 engraved plates and maps, several of fish and other natural history subjects, contemporary panelled calf, neat repairs to joints and extremities, an excellent example. The scarce one-volume true first edition, hastily produced to beat Rogers' account to the market. Edward Cooke served as first mate on the Dutchess under Woodes Rogers' general command, in a privateering expedition that included parts of the West Coast of the Americas. Their chief goal in 1708 was to capture the Manila treasure ship as it approached Acapulco. Cooke's voyage is generally accepted as the probable source for Robinson Crusoe, with Defoe using Alexander Selkirk's account of his years on Juan Fernandez Island as related by Cooke. Apparently there was considerable rivalry between the publishers of Cooke's account and those of Rogers' account to be the first to market, resulting in this one-volume edition with the second portion of the voyage compressed at the end. cf.       1712. Rara. Milano Milan 330 220

Hillegersberg, Berkel-Rodenrijs, Ackerdijkse Plassen - Cruiquius.

Volgens Fockema Andrea & Koeman in Old maps and their makers (1975) is dit "the most beautiful map of Delfland, the Kruikius map is stunning"'.Nicolaes Samuel Kruik (1678-1754), alias Cruquius, werd bekend als waterbouwkundige en cartograaf.

Autograph document signed ("John Flamsteed, MR").

[London, probably 1 April 1712]. - Oblong 8vo. 1 p. Previously unknown payment certificate for his assistant Joseph Crosthwait, written to the Ordnance Office: "I doe hereby certify that Joseph Crosthwaite has been employed as an extraordinary laborer under me from the last day of December past to the last day of March of this present year 1712 at the Observatory in Greenwich Park by Order of the Board. Being 90 days at 18 d a day - 6.15.00". "A number of similar documents, certifying Crosthwait's quarterly pay at various times, survives in different institutions (though they should properly be part of the Public Records)" (Forbes, p. 931, citing a total of seven known specimens in the Library of the British Astronomical Association, London, Staatsbibliothek Berlin, Edinburgh University Library, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Columbia University Libraries, and at a 1983 Drouot Sale. - Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, catalogued more than 3000 stars, accurately calculated the solar eclipses of 1666 and 1668, and was responsible for several of the earliest recorded sightings of the planet Uranus. Joseph Crosthwait was his longest serving assistant, remaining with the Observatory from 1708 until Flamsteed's death in 1719. At this point, the whole of the first volume of Flamsteed's "Historia Coelestis Britannica" had been printed together with much of the second. Crosthwait saw the second volume through to completion and organised the preparation and printing of the third. Cf. Eric C.         Historiae celebriores Veteris [? Novi] Testamenti iconibus repraesentatae et ad excitandas bonas meditationes selectis epigrammatibus exornatae in lucem datae à Christophoro Weigelio.

Noribergae Folio (38.3 cm, 15.125"). 2 vols. in 1. I: [1], 150 plts.; II: [1], 108 plts.. 1712 Representing => all-in commitment to fully graphic embodiment of The Word, this => entirely engraved pictorial Bible by Christoph Weigel depicts hundreds of famous stories and incidents central or dear to the Christian faithful, from the temptation of Adam and Eve, to David slaying Goliath; to scenes of Christ's teaching and emblems of His parables; to portrayals of His agony and taking in the garden, and His trial and crucifixion, and more. (At the end are some notably striking visions of, and from, Revelation.) Below each spacious image is its chapter source and a => brief didactic poem printed in both Latin and German. Faber du Faur notes the large illustrations were designed by Jan Luyken, Casper Luyken, F.A. Meloni, and anonymous contributors before being engraved by Weigel. Brunet gives the plate count for the 1712 edition as 261, but there are no Worldcat records with that number of plates, all records showing either 258 or 260, the latter apparently when the cataloguer has counted the engraved title and half-title as engravings. In total, this folio volume contains two engraved title-pages and 258 full-page engraved illustrations ? 150 from the O.T. and 108 from the N.T. ? all extremely well done, as is all calligraphy. => This is not what one typically thinks of, as an "illustrated Bible"; that is, it is not "embellished text" ? it represents, rather, the Bible IN pictures. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). 18th-century rust and ochre paste paper?covered boards, gilt black leather spine label, all edges stained red; rubbed, especially edges and corners. 18th-century rust and ochre paste paper?covered boards, gilt black leather spine label, all edges stained red; rubbed, especially edges and corners. Light age-toning and some leaves with soiling to edges or marginal spotting; some lower corner tips with an old limited inkstain; these things by no means calamitous. Ex-library with pictorial bookplate at front, a few rubber-stamps not within plates, library pencillings, and booklabel and circulation materials at back. => A good copy of a captivating, ambitious, and beautiful work.
