Remarks upon the present negotiations of peace begun between Britain and France

London 8vo (20.5 cm; 8"). [2] ff., 35, [1] pp.. 1711 Uncut copy of the first (or possibly second) edition of what the Henry Stevens Company described in its 1927 Catalogue of Rare Americana (#671) as a "secretly printed" pamphlet in which the anonymous writer (Arthur Manwaring) studies what he sees as the problem of the growing power and influence of France in Europe and the New World (Canada, the West Indies, and potentially much of the Spanish empire). Such concern sprang from the Peace of Utrecht ending the War of the Spanish Succession, by which the French House of Bourbon assumed the Spanish throne following the death of the last of the Hapsburgs and a decade-long war. There were two editions printed: This, with the pagination as above and with the title-page sporting a double-rule around the text area, and another with only 32 pp. and no border on the title-page. Precedence apparently not established. Uncut, some chipping of edges. Recent boards covered with charcoal-colored paper. Some cockling and staining. Six-digit number stamped on half-title. A good+ copy.

A Treatise of the Hypochondriack and Hysterick Passions, Vulgarly call‘d the Hypo in Men and Vapours in Women; in which the Symptoms, Causes, and Cure of those Diseases are set forth after a Method entirely new. The whole interspers‘d, with Instructive Discourses on the Real Art of Physick it self; and Entertaining Remarks on the Modern Practice of Physicians and Apothecaries: Very useful to all, that have the Misfortune to stand in need of either. In Three Dialogues,

London, Dryden Leach and W. Taylor, 1711 - Sehr seltene EA! First edition! NORMAN 1432: "Possibly the first psychiatric self-help book". HUNTER/MACALPINE 296: "the first book on minor mental maladies ‘writ by way of information to patients‘ rather than ‘to teach other practitioners‘, and to make what he had to say palatable". Mandeville (geb. (p. 231f.) Sprache: de Gewicht in Gramm: 348 8°, Originallederband mit bildgeprägter Verzierung, neuer Rücken mit modernem Rückenschild, XXIV, 280 S. [Attributes: First Edition]

1711 - Linköping, (Kempes änka), 1711. 4:o. (16),122 pp.Disbound. Some ink staining on title, minor spotting, underlinings in ink. Ink signature on p. (16). A good copy.Waller 1143, with only eight preliminary pages including the original cancelled title with "Norköping" in stead of "Östergötland". With complimentary poems by J. Thun, L. Forsselius och A. O. Rhyzelius. The work is concluded with 28 case studies from the authors practice in Norrköping. The multi-talented physician Magnus Gabriel von Block (1669-1722) spoke eleven languages and was a diligent writer. After studies in Uppsala and extensive travels abroad, during which Block became acquainted with Leibniz and studied medicine, among other things, he became a district medical officer in Östergötland in 1702 and settled in Norrköping. In several of his works he fought against superstition and belief in miracles, phenomena which still had a stronghold in Sweden at the time. Some historians have mentioned Block as an important precursor of the enlightenment ideas in Sweden. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

With early engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown. . First Edition. RISM C737. Not in BUC. Campra "was a leading figure in French theatrical and sacred music in the early 18th century... [He] was the most catholic of the generation of composers that flourished between LullyÂ’s death (1687) and RameauÂ’s début as an opera composer (1733). It is no longer possible to sustain the argument that Campra and his contemporaries were mere ‘imitators of LullyÂ’. With his delicate sense of orchestral colour, the kaleidoscopic brilliance with which he used the dance, his gift for melody and his sensitivity to the expressive possibilities of harmony, Campra greatly expanded the musical vocabulary of Lully. Through his opéras-ballets he introduced a degree of verisimilitude to the French lyric stage.' James R. Anthony in Grove online "Little is known of [Desmarest's] early musical life other than that he was one of the boy pages of Louis XIVÂ’s musical establishment. There, directly under the influence of Pierre Robert and Henry Du Mont at an important period in the development of the grand motet, he probably also encountered Lully, who used the chapel pages to augment his performances... Like his contemporaries, Desmarest worked within the framework that Lully had established, while developing certain aspects of it. He made effective use of orchestrally accompanied recitative, with the strings taking over from the continuo at telling moments. Invocations of oracles and spirits and their pronouncements are a feature of nearly all DesmaretsÂ’ tragédies en musique; characteristically they are treated with a low-lying accompaniment, often with an obsessive rhythmic pattern and, in what for its time was a remote key, F minor. His soliloquies use effective changes of style and texture (e.g. from continuo to string accompaniment or from air to recitative and back) to illustrate the uncertainties and changes of mood being expressed. His enthusiasm for bass voices and low sonorities is found in a type of chorus in which a single melody line is directed to be sung by the basses only, an idea which was subsequently taken up by other composers." Caroline Wood in Grove online With interesting reference to Desmarests's exile in the "Avertissement."

A letter to a member of the October-Club: Shewing, that to yield Spain to the Duke of Anjou by a peace, wou'd be the ruin of Great Britain. The second edition, with additions

London: A. Baldwin 8vo (20.8 cm, 8.25"). vi, 42 pp.. 1711 Generally attributed to Francis Hare, Bishop of Chichester, but also attributed to Jonathan Swift, this anonymously published political analysis expresses concern not only that putting the Duke of Anjou on the Spanish throne would tilt the balance of power in Europe too far towards France, but also that such action would greatly damage the livelihoods of English textile workers, among others dependent on international commerce; also questioned are Swift's views on the ramifications of trade with Portuguese America. This is the second, expanded edition. Blue-green paper wrappers, old style. Title-page with small numeric stamp, faint traces of other annotations. Small area of worming in inner margins, touching a very few letters. A few scattered spots, otherwise clean; edges untrimmed.

Henry van Rhin, Delft 1711 - Duodecimo, speckled calf, worn at extremities, spine chipped with some loss at head, joints starting; internally quite good. First edition: a theocratic republic on a South American Island. The author of this utopia remains unknown, but the preface is signed E.R.V.F.L. A fertile island with the capital Macarie had been sliding into corruption and godlessness until society was 'gradually reformed by men's reasoning their way to discover the best procedures' (Gibson). The society they create shares many of its basic tenets with Plato's Republic, most obviously the fact that children are taught and shared communally to avoid the excessive indulgence of parents. All of the people are descendants of the marriage between a French merchant and his wife Marie, who had ten children. The comparison is made with the tribes of Israel: 'Comme le peuple juif descendoit d'un seul Abraham, les Eutopiens descendent tous d'un seul homme.'Meant as a direct comment on the state of European society, the work avers that the piety and strict religion of the Island provide a good and practical example.       1711. BOUTET, Claude. 8, 175 pp. 8vo., bound in contemporary calf. Paris: Christophe Ballard, 1711. |~||~||~||~| Originally published in Paris 1674, this is one of many later editions. The text stresses pigment and colour recipes (most of the book is devoted to them) but there are also sections on drawing, use of the compass, preparation of vellum, etc. Professor Herbert comments on this book, stating "It consists largely of recipes for pigment mixtures and, typically of seventeenth century manuals, these are subordinated to the images the painter creates. One finds advice on pigments for tan architecture, red drapery, blue skies, rather than on the colors themselves." Massing 16, listing 26 editions or printings and she states that the "above list is undoubtedly incomplete."

Wood's Attempt to Discover a North-East Passage to China. IV. F. Marten's Observations made in Greenland.

Slightly rubbed, corners restored, light browning, the folding maps with splits professionally restored. 3 folding maps and 19 engraved plates, 7 of them folding. Contemporary armorial bookplate of George Tollett, (1696-1727?), of Betley Hall, Staffordshire verso of the title page. Second edition, preferred over the first edition "because it has the chart of the western and southern oceans" (Hill). In 1699, Narbrough sailed onboard the Batchelour as part of a commission to find a western opening for the north-west passage and to explore the west coast of the Americas. This account is "of particular interest because of its description of Narbrough's passage in the Batchelour through the Strait of Magellan and into the South Pacific to Chile, which was much read by later navigators, [Narbrough being credited with] one of the first scientific studies of the indigenous population [and] inaugurating an era of research in southern South America that would last for a further two centuries" (Howgego). Also included is Abel Janzoon Tasman's account of his famous voyage of 1642, during which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand and visited Tonga and Fiji. George Tollet was accountant general for Ireland, and was commissioner of the Navy at the time of Narbrough's voyage; he was a friend of both Samuel Pepys and Sir Isaac Newton. Hill 1476; Howgego.

Resp. Quæstio medica, C. Falconet, Præside. An fœtui sanguis maternus alimento ?

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Esemplare in buone condizioni conservative.
