First edition. Maclean describes an additional printing of the first edition, printed for and sold by Maurice Atkins. His recipes show a preference for French-style stewed and braised dishes over the boiled staples of seventeenth century England."(page 197). As cook to five kings and queens of England, "few others could possibly afford to emulate the vast spreads of exotic and costly foods which Lamb so often called for in his book of Royal recipes."         Dialogo.

'In Fiorenza' [actually Naples, no printer], 1710 - 4to (276 x 200 mm), pp [xii] 458 [30, index]; [ii] 83 [recte 81] [1, blank], title in red and black and with engraved vignette with the device and motto of the Accademia della Crusca, sectional title for second part, numerous woodcut diagrams in text; title a bit dustsoiled, a few occasional minor marginal stains, a very good copy in contemporary vellum. £12,500Unrecorded large-paper copy of the second vernacular edition of Galileo's celebrated Dialogo. This is an important edition as it contains an assembly of texts (see below) including the first Italian printing of Galileo's Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina, which had been published in Strasbourg in 1636; this is Galileo's famous defence of the independence of science from religion. There is also a reprint of Paolo Foscarini's Lettera . sopra l'opinione de' Pittagorici, e del Copernico. Della mobilita de la terra, e stabilita del sole, e del nuovo Pittagorico sistema del mondo (Naples, 1615), the first Italian work to openly advocate the Copernican theory. This work was condemned by the Inquisition, the printer imprisoned, and all known copies confiscated and burned, in 1616. Further, the teaching by Galileo and others of Copernicanism was condemned, and Copernicus' De revolutionibus was put on the Index. The 1616 Inquisition edict was invoked when Galileo published the Dialogo in 1632. Two further texts are included in this edition, an excerpt from Kepler's preface to the Astronomia nova (1609), and the Inquisition's sentence against Galileo and his abjuration. The Dialogo, which was put on the Index, was omitted from the Opere which appeared in Bologna 1655-6, and also from the Florence 1718 edition of the works. The present printing was unlicensed (hence the false imprint and anonymous printer). This edition was edited by Lorenzo Ciccarelli, under the pseudonym of 'Cellenio Zacclori', and dedicated to Duke Carlo Caraffa-Pacececco. It includes several important and generally unavailable (and at the time prohibited) texts that were not present in the first edition of 1632. These are Galileo, Lettera . scritta alla granduchessa di Toscana, first printed in 1636 (pp 1-35 of the second group of pages); Paolo Antonio Foscarini, Lettera . sopra l'opinione de' Pittagorici, e del Copernico, first printed in 1615 (pp 36-68); followed by Johannes Kepler, 'Perioche ex Introductione in Martem' (pp 69-74); 'Excerptum ex Didaci. Stunica Salmanticensis commentariis in Job, editiones Tolotanae, ap. Joannem Rodricum, Anno 1584 .' (pp 74-76); 'Sententia Cardinalium In Galilaeum et abjuratio eiusdem, excerptae ex J. B. Riccioli Almagesto Novo' (pp 76-80 ; and 'Abjuratio Galilaei' (pp 80-81). This section was also published separately, from the same type setting (Carli and Favaro 414).The Dialogo is a page-for-page reprint of the first. This is an apparently unknown large-paper issue of the 1710 Dialogo. The copy is some 4 centimetres higher and 3 centimetres wider than normal, and the text block is almost twice as thick as the ordinary issue. Carli and Favaro 413; Cinti 168

Sinus Gangeticus Vulgo Golfo de Bengala Nova Descriptio.

Amsterdam: F. De Wit, [c. 1710]. - Single sheet, (20 ¾ x 24 ¾ inches; 18 ¼ x 21 ¾ inches to the neat line; full margins showing the plate mark). Fine engraved map of part of the Bay of Bengal, with ORIGINAL HAND COLOR IN FULL, the individual territories shown in different bold watercolors of yellow, green, and pink, the decorative title cartouche featuring exotic figures, HEIGHTENED WITH LIQUID GOLD, the distance scale surrounded by cherubs, and 2 fine compass roses, with North oriented to the right, decorated with LIQUID GOLD (old central fold, slightly toned). Extremely fine sea chart of the Bay of Bengal, showing Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the east coast of India, Bangladesh, Burma (Myanmar), Siam (Thailand), Malaysia, and Sumatra, as well as the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands. SKILLFULLY AND ATTRACTIVELY HAND-COLORED, and embellished with LIQUID GOLD. North is oriented to the right, as indicated by two very fine compass roses. With a gorgeous asymmetrical decorative cartouche and distance scale surrounded by cherubs, and the sea dotted with sailing vessels. Some of the toponymy is influenced by Ptolemy, with the Bay of Bengal being noted as "Sinus Gangeticus" and "India Intra Gangem" for the areas lying between the Indus and the Ganges. The Bay of Bengal was an extremely important trade route during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, particularly for the Dutch, though local traders edged in on the European competition starting in the seventeenth century. "After 1641 the Dutch attempt to monopolize the tin trade failed in the face of strong Indian competition. In the second half of the seventeenth century the rise of Johor in alliance with the Dutch gave the Indians opportunity to establish links with Riau which was the up and coming emporium for archipelago trade. Indian Ocean traders were generally on the retreat in the face of advancing Dutch power in Indonesia but after 1670 there was some kind of a resurgence of Indian trade in the Bay of Bengal area which helped to re-establish links with western Indonesia" (Paul H. Kratoska, "South East Asia, Colonial History: Imperialism before 1800," p. 119).

Fine. Chez Estienne Rogier, à Amsterdam 1710, 2 tomes en un Vol. in-12 (9,5x16cm), relié. - First edition, rare, illustrated with 10 figures, including the famous folding plate of the Sabbath. Two title pages in red and black. It is often said that the second 1754 edition is more comprehensive and more rare. There is nothing, not only the first edition has undergone no censorship, but all copies of 1710 we met are in full conformity with the edition of 1754; Furthermore edition was published in 1753, which makes editing much vaunted 1754 is an illusion. According to some bibliographers, the original edition has some censorship; or our exemplary 31 chapters contains much like that of 1754, while the censored copies contain only 26. Moreover Chapter II contains many also very valuable bibliography of books on the occult sciences like all Best of 1710 we met, supposed to be absent from the edition of 1710. Another special feature of the speech Tancred is present and no mention of the publisher (and in so-called copy censored) does not report its withdrawal. In addition, the original is actually much rarer than 1753 edition and 1754. Note that a Paris edition containing a publisher's preface appeared in the same time as the Amsterdam edition. (Dorbon 428, Caillet 1423 Guaita 95) Dutch Binding open rigid time vellum. Smooth back. As brown morocco piece cleverly renovated old, gilt edges. Slips in-garde wearing thin worm work. A brown spot on the dishes. Good copy. Bookplates manuscript title page: From Marchaleck. Book on the occult. "Oufle" is an anagram of "the fool". According Dorbon, "the book of Bordelon, written for an uphill battle demons and superstition, none the less a manual demonology more complete when all the magical and superstitious practices are fully described. "A man victim of countless readings believes, like Don Quixote, the world of demons and witches. Like all books Bordelon, the book is satirical. The many notes contain witchcraft recipes, demonological references ...

"Les principes du clavecin was, as its author claimed, the first method book for the harpsichord, antedating François Couperin's LÂ’art de toucher le clavecin by 14 years. Its first 18 chapters, devoted primarily to fundamentals of music, contain significant information regarding the range of the harpsichord, the performance practice of the slur (of particular value for the performance of préludes non mesurés) and a chapter on metre and tempo. Of the remaining chapters, one is devoted to fingering (including a fully fingered minuet and gavotte) and the other nine to ornamentation. By reproducing and commenting on the ornament symbols of four 17th-century keyboard composers – Chambonnières, Nivers, Lebègue and especially DÂ’Anglebert – Saint Lambert provided a useful comparative perspective on the performance practices of his day." Rebecca Harris-Warrick in Grove Music Online. The Meyer collection, formed over a period of some 75 years, was one of the most important collections of printed music, musical autographs, and books on music of the 20th century.

A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. Part I [all published].

Dublin, Aaron Rhames, for Jeremy Pepyat, 1710. 8vo. Contemporary panelled sheep, rebacked. Title within 2-line rule border, light spotting.. Very rare first edition of Berkeley's magnum opus, a main work of European thought and one of the most important works in the history of philosophy. It is in the present work that Berkeley defines his foundational immaterialist doctrones that came to be the cornestone of modern idealism, profoundly altering the course of modern thought. Along with Descartes' "Cogito ergo sum", Berkeley's "esse est percipi" (formulated in the present work for the fist time) arguably remains the most famous sentence in the history of philosophy.Keynes 5; Norman 196; PMM 176

The Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff, Esq. [The Tatler]

London: John Morphew, 1710. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Recased and respined in new leather with the original paneled calf laid back down on the covers; new endpapers - a very neat job. Modest dampstaining nearly throughout, scattered stains and foxing and, in a few spots, fading to discrete text sections. Browning and staining to some page edges, title repaired along the top edge and trimmed at the bottom, old signature on the top corner - but, overall, a good and legible copy of the scarce first edition and only folio edition. Complete in 271 parts, two volumes in one, the second title stained in the gutter as are the nearby pages. Founded by Richard Steele directly before he and Addison founded The Spectator, The Tatler had less than a two year run, but was enormously influential.

Laibach (Ljubljana), Johann Georg Mayr, 1710 - 7 Bll., 127 S. 1 gefalt. "He developed his medical theory and his ideas of iatrochemistry under the influence of Thomas Sydenham`s current doctrine. On the basis of observations and autopsies, he proposed some new explanations for the etiology as well as the course of disease. He made early scientific analysisn of his observations and was critical of the old established doctrines. At the same time he stressed the importance of social environment, climate, and the bad habits on the occurrence of illness. . Gerbezius, a scientific writer and humanist, is considered the founder of Slovene scientific medizine. He was esteemed and applauded by European scientists. His portrait appeared among those of the issustious in the `Hall of Fourty` at the Medical Faculty in Padua" (Z. Zupanic Slavec & M. Kocijancic, Brief history of medicine in Slovenia. In Vesalius III (1997) S. 78 ff). In addition to invaluable testimony about the structure and functioning of the Funj government before the fall of the Unsab dynasty, Krump contributes data of unparalleled quality on the organization and conduct of the trans-Saharan caravan trade, the commerce in slaves, Sudanese medical practices, Sudanese relations with Ethiopia and a wide array of often unexpected vignettes of daily life." (Jay Spaulding, The Sudanese travels of Theodoro Krump. http://kean.edu/ jspauldi/krump2home.html).

Amsterdam: Frederick De Wit, [c. 1710]. - Single sheet, (21 x 24 ½ inches). EXTREMELY FINE engraved map of Greece, surrounded by a border of yellow wash, with EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL HAND COLOR IN FULL, HEIGHTENED IN LIQUID GOLD, the individual regions shown in different bold watercolors of yellow, green, and pink, decorated with a fine compass rose pointing north with a GOLD-ENHANCED FLEUR-DE-LIS, the title within an ELABORATE HISTORIATED CARTOUCHE (old central fold, slightly toned). An EXTREMELY FINE engraved map of the Greek archipelago, Crete, part of Asia Minor, and the Aegean Sea. The beautiful title cartouche shows two figures, one with a halo painted with LIQUID GOLD and the other in military garb, surrounded by symbols of Greek antiquity, including a lute, armillary sphere, sheet music, and mathematical symbols. The colorist has added a marbling effect to the title panel, adding another layer of texture. The primary regions, indicated by color, are Macedonia, Thelia, Epirus, Livadia Acchaia, Peloponesus Morea, and Creta Candia [Crete]. Other islands shown are Cefalonia, Cyprus, Lesbos, Lemnos, and Chios. The Visscher family was one of the most distinguished of all 17th-century cartographic firms, and a major player in the era now considered the golden age of Dutch mapmaking. In the late 1600's, a period of great geographical discovery, Amsterdam became an international center of the arts and of cartography, with engravers and printers produced magnificent maps and charts of every kind. The fields of artistic production and mapmaking were arguably more seamlessly united during this era than any period before or since, as the strong competition among publishers meant that maps not only had to be scrupulously accurate, but also visually appealing. In this milieu, a number of venerable firms, including those established by Blaeu, Jansson, Hondius, as well as Visscher, competed for the ever-expanding market for maps and atlases. The firm founded by Nicholas Visscher set standards for exceptional quality that few others were able to equal, and Hendrick de Leth, who eventually rose to assume control of the Visscher publishing house in the 18th century, maintained the company's standards for excellence during a period when Amsterdam's cartographic preeminence was just beginning to be challenged by the French school of scientific cartography.
