Batavorum (Leida), Apud Joannem du Vivie, & Isaacum Severinum Bibliopolas, MDCCX

Unghiature decorate in oro, tagli spruzzati. Appena lento. Capilettera incisi all'inizio delle singole opere.

[Collection of Eight Ming Picture Albums] Toshi Gogon, Baichiku Rangiku, Mokuhon Kacho, Sohon Kashi, Kokon Gafu, Meiko Senfu, Toshi Rokugon, Toshi Shichigon.

Kyoto, Nakagawa Mohee, 1710. 8 volumes. 8vo (282 x 195mm). With 421 full-page woodblock illustrations of which 213 are related to natural history. Contemporary original stitched bindings, with calligraphic titleslips (preserved in a recent blue folding box). The most beautifully illustrated Chinese book of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Eight unrelated volumes have been published by different authors and artists within a period of a few years (1620-1628). The order of the publication of the volumes is subject to controversy. Each volume has a different title. The eight works are known as 'Hasshu Gafu', but this collective title does not appear anywhere in the volumes. The single Chinese edition was published in the early 1620's. The books were imported into Japan and issued, first in 1672. Our copy is the second Japanese edition of 1710. The book is a great rarity. The Chinese edition, absent in all Western collections is unobtainable. Three complete copies of the first Japanese edition have been located. The second Japanese edition has been described by Mitchell, New York City Public Library, p. 289 and Kraft, Berlin Public Library, no. 224. Several libraries preserve one, two, three or four volumes out of eight. The Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale has 3 volumes of the second Japanese edition. According to Japanese specialists, the publication of 'Hasshu Gafu' had a considerable impact on Japanese painters of the 17th and 18th century and is considered as the first great pictorial source on Chinese painting for Japanese artists. The work is composed as follows: 1. Toshi Gogon. Illustration of five verse poems of the T'ang Dynasty, (618-906). 50 single page illustrations. 2. Baichiku Rangiku, dated Wan-li 48 (=1620). Illustrations of Plums, Bamboo, Orchids and Chrisanthemums. 98 single page illustrations. 3. Mokuhon Kacho, dated T'ien-ch'i 1 (=1621). Illustrations of flowers and birds. 44 single page illustrations. 4. Sohon Kashi, dated T'ien-ch'i 1 (=1621). Illustrations of flowering plants. 45 single page illustrations. 5. Kokon Gafu. Ancient and modern paintings. 46 single- page illustrations 6. Meiko Senfu. Fan paintings. 47 double-page illustrations. 7. Toshi Rokugon. Illustration book of Chinese poems in the 'rokugon style', 40 single page illustrations. 8. Toshi Shichigon. Illustration book of Chinese poems in the 'shichigon style', highly estimated during the T'ang dynasty (618-906). 50 single page illustrations. This volume has a slightly different decoration pattern of the covers than the others. The third volume 'Mokuhon Kacho' has some considerable marginal worming at the upper margin of 7 leaves. A well preserved set, a few leaves with some occasional insignificant wormholes. Mitchell p. 289.

The Tryal Of Dr. Henry Sacheverell, Before The House of Peers, For High Crimes and Misdemeanors; Upon An Impeachment

First Edition Recently elegantly rebound in light brown calf leather with six raised bands on the spine and a gilt stamped dark brown leather label in one compartment. Pages 253 through 284 show a very light dampness stain to the upper portions of the leaves. Pages 127 through 139 show what may have been a scorch mark (tobacco?) ranging from 1/4" to 3/4" with none of the underlying print rendered illegible. The first 31 pages are uniformly tanned from age as are the rear most two leaves. Despite being a quarto measuring 12 1/4" by 7 3/4" this is referred to as the folio edition printed exclusively for the House of Peers as evidenced by the imprimature (license and authorization to print) dated March 17, 1709/1710 from the House of Peers. 327 pages of text with the pages 77 through 84 misnumbered and lacking a page number on the verso side of those pages. Professionally bound in a style reminiscent of early 18th century binding. Our code number = TB26139

Demonstratio de Deo sive Methodus ad Cognitionem Dei naturalem Brevis ac Demonstrativa. Cui accedunt Epistolae quaedam Miscellaneae. De Animae Natura & Immortalitate, De veritate Religionis Christianae, De Universo, &c

Title printed in red & black. 4to, cont. calf, panelled in gilt (upper joint a little cracked but strong, one small defect to upper cover), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: G. Taylor, 1710. First edition, presentation copy from the author to Thomas Parker (1667-1732), first earl of Macclesfield and lord chancellor, who formed the magnificent library at Shirburn Castle. Raphson (fl. 1689-1712), mathematician and fellow of the Royal Society, has inscribed the free front endpaper: "Viro vere Venerabili Thoma Parkero Equiti Aurato Summo Anglia in Banco Regina Justiciario &c J Raphson." Raphson knew Newton in Cambridge and wrote The History of Fluxions (1715), which served as an apologia for Newton and an exposition of his methods of calculus. He also translated into English Newton's Arithmetica Universalis. Raphson was, amongst the Newtonians, the most fervent defender of the nature of space as a divine attribute. Leibniz owned a copy of this book and critically reviewed it in the Jan.-Feb. 1712 issue of the Acta Eruditorum. Berkeley fiercely attacked this book; he denied space ever possessed any strong ontological status. Fine and handsome copy from the Macclesfield library with bookplate. Title somewhat browned. .

Lexicon technicum: Or, an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences. 2 vols., 1704-10

Dan Brown Tim. Goodwin John Walthoe etc. London: Dan Brown, Tim. Goodwin, John Walthoe [etc.], 1704 -1710. No Dust Jacket. Harris, John (1666?-1719). Lexicon technicum: Or, an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences: Explaining not only the terms of art, but the arts themselves. 2 vols., folio. Unpaginated; collation available on request. Engraved portrait frontispiece by G. White after R. White in Vol. I, 14 engraved plates, text woodcuts. London: Dan Brown, Tim. Goodwin, John Walthoe [etc.], 1704-1710. 320 x 205 mm. Paneled calf ca. 1704-10, rebacked, endpapers renewed. A few plates toned, but a fine copy. Armorial bookplate of John Manley, Esq. in Vol. II. First Edition of the first English dictionary of arts and sciences, and the earliest modern encyclopedia of science. Harris was the first to make the distinction between "word-books" (dictionaries) and "subject-books (encyclopedias), and his Lexicon Technicum is the first English encyclopedia to be arranged in alphabetical order, as opposed to systematic order in the tradition of the medieval encyclopedist, Isidore of Seville. A clergyman educated at Oxford, Harris took an early interest in science, and was elected to the Royal Society in 1696. As a result, he had access to many of the greatest scientific minds in England, and the Lexicon technicum may be the first example of an encyclopedist relying directly on the consultation and help of experts or specialists, such as John Ray and Isaac Newton. In particular Harris relied heavily on the writings of Isaac Newton as a source, quoting lengthy excerpts from them under such headings as "Attraction," "Colour," "Fluxions," "Gravity," "Light," and "Motion." The introduction to Vol. II contains the first printing (in Latin and English) of Newton's "De natura acidorum," his only published work on chemistry; and the articles "Quadrature" and "Curves" give the first English translations of the "Two treatises" from Newton's Opticks. The first edition of volume 2 was published together with the second edition of volume 1. Therefore sets of the first edition of both volumes of Lexicon Technicum are rare on the market.
