Another ten leaves or so with minor but unobtrusive wormhole. Small rusthole in columns 18-19. Bookplate of L. F. Rääf. A very good copy.Warmholtz Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica 1660, the note. The Swedish catholic Johannes Vastovius followed Sigismund to Poland when the latter was dethroned as King of Sweden and became his court chaplain and librarian in Cracow. Vastovius' book on the lives of the Swedish saints was first published in Cologne in 1623. It treats Scandinavian "saints" from bishop Hubertus in the 9th century to the so-called Wiks-Pilt in 1525, the majority of which never were beaitified, and to an even lesser extent canonized. The original edition soon became rare and the work was republished by Erik Benzelius the Younger in a new, annotated edition. Benzelius excluded the papal letters but kept the dedication to Sigismund from the original, and, with his Lutheran readership in mind, supplied it with appropriate reservations.         Handwritten Manuscript on Works Relating to St. Thomas Aquinas.

1708. Octavo, bound in period vellum with title in ink on spine, leather ties. Unpaginated, approximately 200 manuscript pages in Latin. With two hand colored title pages at front. Volume in neat Latin script, apparently concerning the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. The title page is dated 1708. Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) was an Italian Dominican friar, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was an immensely influential philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the Doctor Angelicus and the Doctor Communis. The name Aquinas identifies his ancestral origins in the county of Aquino in present-day Lazio. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology and the father of Thomism; of which he argued that reason is found in God. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory. Unlike many currents in the Church of the time, Aquinas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle--whom he called "the Philosopher"--and attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. The works for which he is best known are the Summa Theologiae and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Scripture and on Aristotle form an important part of his body of work.

London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, within Grays-Inn Gate next Grays-Inn, 1708. Full Calf. Near Fine. First edition of this translation, by John Hughes, superseding that of Dryden. 8vo; [2], l, [2], 209 [1]pp, with a finely engraved frontispiece. Bound in contemporary or slightly later 18th-century Cambridge-paneled calf, the spine richly gilt in six compartments divided by raised bands, with a red leather lettering piece in the second. The joints very skillfully mended, a Near Fine copy, the pages bright and fresh. ESTC Citation No. T139460. The Dialogues, modeled on the dialogues of Lucian, unite in conversation figures from antiquity, such as Socrates and Aristotle, with more recent personages, including Erasmus and Montaigne, to discuss the literary and philosophical developments of Fontenelle's day. First published anonymously in 1683, Dialogues des morts and Nouveaux dialogues des morts were Fontenelle's first works and ignited his reputation, which was consolidated three years later with Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes, through which he popularized Copernicus's heliocentric model of the Universe. To this edition, John Hughes contributes both an appreciation and assessment of Fontenelle as well as two dialogues of his own.

The tryumphs of war: or, Great Britain's repeated glory; being a new and particular description of the colours and standards taken in the famous Battle of Audenarde: where the French army, under the Duke of Burgundy and Vendosme, was totally routed by the confederate, commanded by Prince Eugene and the Duke of Marlborough.London, John Bradford, [1708]. 1mo (57 x 41.5 cm). With a central woodcut with two equestrian medallion portraits of Prince Eugene and the Duke of Marlborough, 48 woodcut flags (32 colours and 16 standards), and 2 decorative woodcut columns built up from 3 pieces each.

Not in COPCAC; ESTC; WorldCat. Only copy located of a broadside on the regimental colours and standards taken by the British during the Battle of Oudenarde, a famous battle in the War of the Spanish Succession fought on 11 July 1708 with the forces of Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire on the one side and those of France on the other. The commander of the allied armies was John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, whose chief deputy was the commander of the Empire's army Prince Eugène of Savoy. It includes a description of the battle, a list of the prisoners and fallen enemies and allies, and woodcuts of the captured colours of the French infantry regiments and the smaller standards of the cavalry regiments. Every regiment had its own colour or standard. These flags were an intimate part of the regimental tradition and heritage and often had their battle honours sewn to them. So capturing these regimental flags was seen as a worthy action, leaving the survivors of the regiment in despair, and they were brought home as war trophies. Due to their very nature these flags were constantly being replaced after destruction in battle. Some minor thumbing and subtly restored small tears along the extremities, otherwise in very good condition.

Lexicon Technicum Or, An Universal English Dictionary of Arts and Sciences: Explaining not only the Terms of Art, but the Arts Themselves

London: Dan. Brown et al, 1708. Second Edition. Leatherbound. Very Good. Unpaginated. Engraved portrait frontispiece and hundreds of illustrations, full page and within text. Two pull-out diagrams. Full leather with raised bands and blind impressing. Rebacked with new spine label. Label residue on front pastedown. Small hole in portrait frontispiece. Ink inscription top of title page and paper repair on rear. Pages darkened, minor foxing, a few thumb marks and dampness stains. A few roughened edges. A tear in first fold-out diagram and chip from second diagram. Rear endpaper has red stains. First published in 1704, "Lexicon Technicum" was in many respects the first alphabetical encyclopedia written in English. Although the emphasis was on mathematical subjects, its contents go beyond what would be called science or technology today, in conformity with the broad 18th-century understanding of the terms "arts" and "science." It includes entries on the humanities and fine arts, notably law, commerce, music and heraldry; it does not include theology, biographies or poetry. As in many books, the illustrations are an important part of the Lexicon's appeal. Check out the great "Fortification" plate with accompanying explanations - or John Marshall's "New Invented Double Microscope," the second fold-out diagram. The book's editor, John Harris (c. 1666 - 1719) was an English writer and a clergyman. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1696 and was its vice-president for a time. In 1698, he delivered a lecture entitled "Atheistical Objections against the Being of God and His Attributes fairly considered and fully refuted." The friendship of Sir William Cowper, afterwards lord chancellor, secured for Harris the office of private chaplain, a prebend in Rochester cathedral (1708), and the rectory of several parishes. A man of many interests, he was working on a complete history of Kent at the time of his death. Sadly, he is said to have died in poverty brought on by poor management of his financial affairs.

Plate 26- Hæmisphærium Stellatvm Boreale Cvm Subiecto Hæmisphærio Terrestri

Amsterdam: Schenk and Valk: Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica 1708 - Sheet Dimensions: 19.5 x 24.25 in. Frame Dimensions: 32 x 36.5 in. Hand-colored copperplate engraving. This plate finalizes documenting the Northern Hemisphere’s constellations, with their traditional orientation. There are 29 Ptolemaic constellations and & from Petrus Plancius. The plate is similar in its aesthetic to the other constellation plates by Cellarius. It has a filled and intricate center, accented by a decorative cartouche displaying various mythological and divine figures. An interesting detail about this plate is the labeling of the stars in Orion’s belt. In this plate they are named “Drie Koningen” (The three kings). “This popular name was commonly used by Dutch mariners and is explained by the fact that this asterism is particularly visible in the months around Christmas.” In this plate specifically, the center circle is supported by Hercules and the Titan Atlas. In Greek mythology Atlas was cursed to hold the sky, celestial sphere, upon his shoulders, which explains why he is the Titan associated with astronomy and navigation. Hercules, in order to complete one of the Twelve Labors sent upon Hercules from Hera, he sought assistance from Atlas. Hercules held up the heavens for a short period of time for Atlas to get some apples from Hera’s garden, which he did. Atlas, upon returning intended to trick Hercules into taking the burden, but was unsuccessful. Hercules agreed to take the burden as long as Atlas would hold it for just a moment while he prepared himself. Upon Atlas taking back this burden for what he thought would only be a short while longer, Hercules grabbed the Apples and ran away. This piece provides many moments of visual enjoyment with all of its symbols, figures, and references. The craftsmanship exudes dedication and attention to detail whilst providing a platform for classical conversation.

Plate 24: Hemispherium Stellatum Reale Antiquum

Amsterdam, Schenk and Valk 1708 - Andreas Cellarius (1656-1702) From Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica Amsterdam: Schenk and Valk, 1708 Hand-colored copperplate engravings 32” x 36 1/2” framed Framed in beautiful 24 carat gold leaf frames with hand-detailing to museum specifications (UV plexiglasss). In addition to their lavish aesthetic appeal, the celestial charts of Andreas Cellarius comprise the most sweeping, ambitious project in the history of celestial cartography, one which also illustrates the historical tensions of the time. Cellarius’ maps present the evolution of the field of astronomy from ancient times until his own. In his distinctive visual language, Cellarius portrayed the often-conflicting theories that prevailed. In addition to the relatively obscure notions of Tycho Brahe and Schiller, Cellarius’s charts track the theories of Ptolemy, dating from the 2nd century AD, and Copernicus’s 16th-century challenge to the venerable ancient astronomer. Cellarius’ project was not devoid of political motivation. Up to his time of artistic activity, the Netherlands had been the unquestioned center of scientific discovery, and Dutch mapmakers had reigned supreme above all others. In the early 18th century, Louis XV of France sought to bring his country to the forefront of science, and by association, to imply political dominance. His efforts led to great competition between France and the Netherlands, and Cellarius’ sweeping project was an attempt to thwart French attempts completely. In some cases, Cellarius incorporated French elements into his maps, like acanthus leaves which can be seen often on French furniture of the period. In this way, he attempted to use French visual elements more skillfully than they themselves could. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Dutch cartographers reigned supreme in their field. Cellarius’ work remains a landmark of the Golden Age of Exploration, combining great artistic beauty with scientific documentation. The vibrant hues, spanning the color spectrum, give amazing animation to the images, and the skies appear to come alive with bright figures.

Plate 23- Coeli Stellati Christiani Hæmisphærium Posterius

Amsterdam: Schenk and Valk: Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica 1708 - Sheet Dimensions: 19.5 x 24.25 in. Frame Dimensions: 32 x 36.5 in. Hand-colored copperplate engraving. This plate continues in respect to plate 22, in that it further documents the Christianized constellations of Julius Schiller. The numbering in the plate refers to Schiller’s Stellar Atlas. It is understood today that his constellation designation to Christianity did not last, we still refer to the constellations by their mythological alias. Astronomers of the time found the system “needlessly complicated, especially for astronomers wishing-then as now-to compare their own stellar observations with those by earlier astronomers.”

Relazione del Paese de' Svizzeri, e loro alleati d'Arminio Annebuchi

presso Andrea Poletti. In-8° (175x118mm), pp. (18), 256, cartonatura coeva alla rustica con titolo manoscritto in antico al dorso. Fregio ornamentale inciso al frontespizio. Fregi tipografici incisi su legno. Qualche goretta sporadica. Ottima copia in barbe. Una seconda edizione dell'opera uscì a Venezia nel 1719 riveduta e corretta dall'autore, una traduzione inglese, An account of Switzerland, and the Grisons: as also of the Valesians,Geneva... made English from the Italian original, a Londra presso Knapton nel 1710; una traduzione francese, testimoniata dal Giornale de' letterati di Venezia (XXXI [1718], p. 437), è rimasta per noi introvabile." (G. T. Torcellan in D.B.I., X, 1968). Melzi, I, p. 87. Hist. Lexicon der Schweiz, 1708.
