Litotomia ovvero del cavar la pietra.

Florence, Guiseppe Manni, 1707, Folio, 24, 110, (2) pp., Titelvignette und 16 ganzseitige Kupferstich-Tafeln in einem Halblederband der Zeit mit Rückenvergoldung. Ein breitrandiges und unbeschnittenes Exemplar. *Rare First Edition of an early but authoritative book on Lithotomy, the surgery to remove the stone. It is excellently illustrated, the plates showing the actual operations as well as the urological instruments. Tommaso Alghisi (1669-1730) was an Italian surgeon, famous in his time for successfull cures of the stone and in this mayor work he was probably the first to use an indwelling urethral catheter to drain urine away from the wound. The inclined position of the patient which head raised during the operation , illustrated in plate XVI, was widely used on his authority.

Romae: J.F. Buagani, 1707, 4, title leaf with an engraved 'grim reaper', (22), 243, (1 Errata) pp., fine contemporary full parchment binding ExLibris 'Malande de Merindol" a little bit water stained, but fine copy on extra crisp paper. First Edition, the rare "A" Issue *) "of the foundation for a true understanding of cardiac pathology"!"In the above work Lancisi noted cardiac hypertrophy and dilatation as causes of sudden death. He was the first to describe valvular vegetation and his book gives a classification of the cardiac diseases then recognized. Lancisi's work laid the foundation for a true understanding of cardiac pathology." Garrison & Morton Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720), regarded as the greatest Italian clinician of his time, was asked by Pope Clement XI to analyze and report on the pathogenesis of death in Rome. Lancisi responded with the treatise "De Subitaneiis Mortibus", published in 1707. In the first half of the book he dealt with sudden death in general, attributing it to three causes - "suffocation from intemperance," syncope, and apoplexy. More important, however, were the sections on heart disease, because here Lancisi laid the foundation s of cardiac pathology. He described such conditions as cardiac syphilis, which had not previously identified, and provided a classification of heart disease. Hypertrophy and dilatation of the heart were presented as manifestations of cardiac disease, and the existence of valvular vegetations was discussed for the first time. Lancisi's observations on heart disease were based on cases he had seen in his practice in Rome and include reports of autopsies in five fatal cases. Lancisis died in 1720, but his later researches on the heart, with an important treatise on aneurysms, were published in 1728 by his former assistant, Francesco Soldati. In that book, the frequency of aneurysm of the heart was noted. Lancisi pointed out that the walls of some aneurysm, whereas those of others are thick. Their causes, he stated are diverse and include heredity, syphilis, asthma, palpitation, excesses, and violent emotions. The clinical and anatomic descriptions are detailed, with every effort made to correlate the two. The observations were precise-for example, exact measurements of body organs were given. The causes of unexpected death included cerebral hemorrhage and hypertrophied hearts valvular vegetations were described clearly. Lancisi's book illustrates the trend toward making clinico anatomic correlations. see: Leibowitz, p.3 pp.74-75 Willius & Dry, pp. 76-77.*) "Three variant title pages of 'De subianeis mortibus (Rorme, 1707) exist. Type a is the "grim reaper" motif. Type b the small woodcut shield, and Type c the large engraved papal shield." "The previously unreported grim reaper engraving (Type a) appears to be the least common of the three variant vignettes.""Pending formal collation or pertinent historical evidence, priority among these variants remains uncertain, although some speculation may be permitted. Comparing the fine large engraving of the papal shield (Type c) with the smaller woodcut shield (Type b) makes it reasonable to suggest that Type c followed Type b as an improved version of the shield vignette. Three admittedly nonsubstantive lines of logic suggest that vignette Type a, the grim reaper motif, briefly preceded the other two. First, it is the least prevalent. Second, the later Italian editions employ vignettes based on the papal shield theme, evidently expressing the papal support and sanction intended for this work." Paul D.         Optica oculorum vitia : sub praesidio Georgii Alberti Hambergeri, ... in Academia Jenensi, doctorum oculis ad diem ... Octobr. MDCIVC sujiciet Adamus Behmannus Bernhardi, ...

Jena : Literis Gollnerianis, 1707, Kl.-4, (2), 64 pp., mit 1 Kupfertafel, feiner Pappband im Stil d. Zeit. Rare - Second Edition of the first monograph on refractive errors !"Physiology in general and physiologic optics in specific made great progress during the 18th century. These advances were at first made not by practicing ophthalmologists but the mathematicians and physicists. This situation is, therefore , similar to that of the 17th century when progress was achieved by Kepler, Scheiner, Kircher, Mariotte, Hooke, Rohault, Deschales, Huygens and others. The mathematician Georg Albrecht Hamberger (1662-1716) was the author of a most curios monograph which was printed toward of the end of the 17th century. Modern historian did not know about it and it is not mentioned by A. Hirsch, not by Helmholtz in the second edition of his Physiological Optik. It is difficult to determine how much this book influenced the thought progress of the 18th century. It is only mentioned in the review of the literature by Julius Beer in his first 'Augenheilkunde' of 1792 and Haller quotes it in his 'Elementa physiologiae humani' ...."The book is called: Optica oculorum vitia sub praesidio Geogrii Alberti Hambergeri, ....This is the first monograph on refractive errors, - the root so to speak from which 170 years later the classical book by Donders evolved the monograph is for its time extraordinarily clear, strictly mathematical and physical, written in an entirely different spirit from the scholastic descriptions of the fourth book by Plempius "Opthalmographia" (1632) and also far superior to the corresponding remarks in Boerhaave's lectures on ophtahlmology (1708, printed in 1746 to 1771). These two publications are usually regarded as the beginning of physiologic optics. ....(Also) Modern ocular hygiene was created by Professor Hamberger in Jena in 1696 ...Only the reform of ophthalmology during the middle of the 19th century which was based on the ophthalmoscope and the correct recognition of refraction changed the situation." Hirschberg/Blodi IV, pp.284-291"Es ist dies die erste Sonderschrift über die Fehler der Einstellung des Auges ... für die damalige Zeit außerordentlich klar, streng mathematisch-physikalisch ... geschrieben ... Die Hygiene des Auges ... ist in den zahllosen Schriften über diesen Gegenstand, die um die Wende des 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert ... erschienen sind, nur wenig verbessert und erweitert worden " Hirschberg

        Histoire de la Virginie

Amsterdam: Chez Thomas Lombrail, 1707. Full Calf. Near Fine. 12mo; [4], 432, [16]pp, plus 14 finely executed plates (based on the engravings from the first part of Theodor De Bry's Grand Voyages) and a folding table. Engraved title page, with the coat of arms of Virginia, precedes the printed title page. Translated from the English ("The history and present state of Virginia, in four parts," first published in 1705). Contemporary full calf, the spine, in six compartments, very richly gilt with a red morocco label lettered in gilt. A very handsome, well-preserved copy Sabin 5116. Howe B-410. Church 821. JCB I 93. First French Edition (with a new title page) of the first history of the Virginia colony "penned by a native and the best contemporary account of its aboriginal tribes and the life of its early settlers." (Howes) Sabin calls Beverley the "best authority," affording the "most vivid, comprehensive, instructive, and entertaining picture of Virginia at the date of his writing" and quotes Pinkerton: "A work of considerable merit." Beverley's History, one of the most outspoken books of Americanism before the War of Independence, satirized the 'Rapacious and Arbitrary' English governors and objected to the 'heavy Impositions' put upon the American colonies by the English, while celebrating Virginia's history and laws, featuring stories of early Virginia-including the Lost Colony and Pocahontas saving Captain John Smith-which became standard features of American history. Even so, large parts of the History derived from existing sources, though Beverley often gave even the borrowed material his own interpretation. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        [Armorial Binding] Praedium Rusticum

Paris [Lutetiae Parisiorum]: Apud Joannem Le Clerc, M. DCC. VII. [1707]. First Edition. Full Calf. Fine-. 12mo: [6],268,[12], with engraved initials and head and tail pieces, and 10 charming full-page plates by Laurent Cars after Dumesnil, one at the beginning of each book. In Latin. Full speckled calf, contemporary to publication, covers framed in blind with gilt-stamped coat-of-arms on both, spine in six compartments richly gilt, red leather lettering piece gilt, edges speckled red, marbled end papers. About Fine, joints skillfully reinforced; clean, well-margined leaves with occasional mild foxing and edge stains; most plates with faint tide mark to upper edge. Huzard II 944. Thiébaud 917-918. Schwerdt II, p. 278-79. First Edition (according to Schwerdt, but Thiébaud calls the Paris edition of 1696, which is "fort rare," the "Édition originale") of this didactic poem in ten books praising the pleasures of life in the countryside. Vanière instructs on the art of gardening while inspiring, in picturesque verse, a love of weather and landscape, the grape harvest, winemaking, hunting and fishing, orchards and vegetable gardens, and bees. His poems were highly esteemed, with editions of Praedium Rusticum issued for more than a hundred years, until 1829. The 1707 edition contains ten books, but the poem would ultimately comprise sixteen, in the second edition of 1730. The title refers to Charles Estienne’s sixteenth-century treatise on gardening of the same name, but Vanière’s poem is more than a reiteration, also providing a response to Rene Rapin (a French Jesuit, as was Vanière), emphasizing the value of herbs and vegetables over flowers and topiaries, which Rapin championed in his Hortorum (1665). Vanière's instructive content and practical perspective made his poem one of the most popular published in seventeenth century France. Gilt-stamped arms on both boards are those of Henry William Paget (1768-1854), 2nd Earl of Uxbridge and, later, 1st Marquis of Anglesey. A distinguished officer, Paget commanded the English cavalry at the battle of Waterloo, where he lost a leg. N. B. Still a fine and wide-margined copy. ----Babson 199; Wallis 277; Gray 277; DSB X, p.93. - FIRST EDITION and one of thousand copies published of Newton's lectures delivered while Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University between 1669 and 1702. The book was published and edited by William Whiston, who succeeded Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in 1701. "The Universal Arithmetic, which is on algebra, theory of equations, and miscellaneous problems, contains the substance of Newton's lectures during the years 1673 to 1683. His manuscript of it is still extant; Whiston extracted a somewhat reluctant permission from Newton to print it, and it was published in 1707. Amongst several new theorems on various points in algebra and the theory of equations Newton here enunciates the following important results. He explains that the equation whose roots are the solution of a given problem will have as many roots as there are different possible cases; and he considers how it happens that the equation to which a problem leads may contain roots which do not satisfy the original question. He extends Descartes' rule of signs to give limits to the number of imaginary roots. He uses the principle of continuity to explain how two real and unequal roots may become imaginary in passing through equality, and illustrates this by geometrical considerations; thence he shews that imaginary roots must occur in pairs [. . .] The most interesting theorem contained in the work is his attempt to find a rule (analogous to that of Descartes for real roots) by which the number of imaginary roots of an equation can be determined." (W.W.R. Ball, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics, pp. 330-31). Newton is recorded as having taken remarkably little interest either in the work or its original publication. 14 months afterwards, David Gregory reported that Newton 'has not seen a sheet of it, nor knows he what value it is in, nor how many sheets it will make, nor does he well remember the contents of it. He intends to goe down to Cambridge this summer and see it, and if it does not please him to buy up the copyes' (The Newton Handbook, p. 33). Newton complained, in fact, that Whiston had introduced titles and headings which were not his own and that the edition contained numerous mistakes. Nevertheless, it was fifteen years before a second edition was prepared, by John Machin in 1722; yet although advertised as having been revised and corrected by the author, Newton's own changes then were in fact minimal. Despite all this, and the fact that it was first published anonymously, the work proved to be one of Newton's more popular books and in 1720 it was even translated into English. Very Good.

Rarissima. A very rare map taken from Coronelli’s "Teatro della Guerra diviso in XXXXVIII parti" published in Venice (though the front page says Naples) between 1706 and 1709. The collection contains hundreds of views, geographic maps and sea charts depicting the entire world. Ermanno Ermao, who studied Coronelli’s production, wrote "it is not easy to determine how many and which are the volumes that belong to the collection ". The volume that describes the Kingdom of Naples has been published in 1707. Some of the maps derive from those already published in the Isolario in 1696, with minor changes; nonetheless, the majority of the views has been realized exclusively for this collection.

Copper engraving, in perfect condition. Extremely rare. Dimensioni 180 130mm
