[.] Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1706.

      - [NL] Coll.: 4º: *-2*4 (*3 als A3) A-O4 P6 (-P5) Q-T4 V2, 2A-3F4, 3A-Y4, gepag.: [16] 156, 413 [3], 153 [23] pp. Met een gegraveerde titelpagina, een kopvignet boven de opdracht aan Wilhem de la Palma en 6 uitslaande platen (30 x 18 cm), alle door Romeyn de Hooghe. Ex.: Leer, geribde rug met titelschild, platten gemarmerd, hoeken beschadigd, verder goed exemplaar. Bibl. verw.: Haitsma Mulier/Van der Lem 232b; Landwehr 102; Lit.: NNBW VIII, 786; Te Winkel IV, p.450. [EN] Coll.: 4º: *-2*4 (*3 als A3) A-O4 P6 (-P5) Q-T4 V2, 2A-3F4, 3A-Y4, gepag.: [16] 156, 413 [3], 153 [23] pp. with engraved title page and head-piece above the dedication to Wilhelm de la Palma and six folding plates (30 x 18 cm), by Romeyn de Hooghe. Ex: Leather, ribbed back with title label, sides in marbled paper, corners damaged, otherwise good exemplar. Bibliography: Haitsma Mulier/Van der Lem 232b; Landwehr 102; Lit.: NNBW VIII, 786; Te Winkel IV, p.450. Van der Hoeven, born in Amsterdam around 1660, perhaps worked there as merchant; he was also - according to the title page - agent of the duke of Saksen. One year before 'Hollands aeloude vryheid' Ten Hoorn published another extensive historical work by him, , 'Leeven en dood der doorlugtige heeren gebroeders Cornelis de Witt [.] en Johan de Witt', for which Romeyn de Hooghe made the title page. Wilhelm de Palma, to whom this work is dedicated, was general director of the Dutch West India Company on the Golden Coast. He was also member of the theatrical company 'In magnis voluisse sat est' for which he himself wrote pieces or translated some from French. He died perhaps after 1727, since his last known piece 'De drie Hamburgers' is dating from that year. RdH013

Den Danske Vitruvius ... | Le Vitruve Danois ... | Der Dänische Vitruvius.Copenhagen, Ernst Henrich Berlings, 1746-1749. 2 volumes. Imperial folio (48 x 30.5 cm). With richly engraved architectural frontispiece, and 281 engraved and etched plates, including 5 double-page, with architectural plans, designs and views of the Danish castles, manors, public buildings, churches, etc., including beautiful bird's-eye views of houses and gardens, views of the city of Copenhagen, etc., as well as interior architectural designs for mantelpieces, doorways, altars, pulpits, etc., by Michael Keijl and C.L. Wüst, after the drawings by L. de Thurah (Thieme-Becker attributes the views to J.J. Bruun). 20th-century half brown goatskin, gold-tooled spine.

BAL 3317; Berlin Kat. 2259; Millard arch. coll. III, 131; not in Fowler. Beautiful atlas of Danish architecture, with the text in Danish, French and German in parallel columns. It shows an abundant wealth of plans and interior and exterior architectural designs, explained in the text. The fine overall views show the castle and gardens of Rosenburg, Christiansburg, Charlottenburg, Amalienburg, etc., and the country-seats Sorgenfrey, Fredensburg, Iägerprijs, Fraidenlund, Scanderburg, Nyekiöburg, Herlufsholm, Walloë, etc. The title-page names no author, but Laurids de Thurah (1706-1759), who signed the dedication to King Frederick V, was the most influential Danish architect of his generation and a leading proponent of the late Baroque style in northern Europe. He was appointed court architect in 1733. In 1735 the new Danish king, Christian VI, made Thurah a grant specifically for the purpose of compiling Den Danske Vitruvius, but he died only months before the first volume appeared, so Thurah dedicated the book to his young son and successor. Vol. I depicts the royal palaces and public buildings of Copenhagen; vol. II the castles and other notable buildings outside the capital. A planned third volume never appeared. With bookplate. Frontispiece bound in vol. II. With some faint stains and minor restorations in the first and last leaves, but still in good condition, with only occasional and mostly marginal spots or small stains. A monumental celebration of Danish architecture, with 282 very large plates.

Second edition. - 1706 NAVIGATION of Jean Bouguer Voyages Star Charts Illustrated MAPS Compass A rare second edition of Jean Bouguer’s “Complete Treaty of Navigation”. According to Pierre Bouguer, Jean’s son, on this book, “I believe that I will not be denied by anyone when I saw that this treaty is regarded, for a long time, as the most unique book on these matters.” Jean Bouguer was sailor and voyager on the King’s ships, sadly, he lost a leg in 1698 and became inactive from the Navy. THREE YEARS TRAVELS FROM MOSCOW OVERLAND TO CHINA: Thro' Great Ustiga, Siriania,

London 1706, Freeman. Contemporary tooled calf, small 4to, 18 x 25 cm cm., 210p., engravings: title page and 30 plates, large folding engraved map and frontispiece or short title page. Q U I T E R A R E FIRST ENGLISH EDITION . . THE FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION . . PETER THE GREAT SENT IDES [A DANE] AS AMBASSADOR . . AS AMBASSADOR TO THE EMPEROR OF CHINA 1693-1730 . . This is the First English language translation, of this title, published in 1706. . * WRITTEN IN THE "OLDE" ENGLISH: . This work like most of its contemporaries of this period were always written in "Olde English." That means instead of using "s" where we now would spell that word correctly, "Olde English" always used "f" to replace all "s" spellings. This is a common feature for books from around 1500 onwards until it was changed to use "s" in the modern epoch. This book being printed more than 300 years ago uses that old style and format.. . *** SUBTITLE continued: "... and the Cusftoms of the Barbarous Inhabitants; with Reference to their Religion, Government, Marriages, daily Imployments [sic], Habits, Habitations, Diet, Death, Funerals &c. Written by his Excellency E. Ysbrants Ides, Ambaffador from the Czar of Mufcovy to the Emperor of China. Illuftrated with a large map of the countries, drawn by the Ambaffador upon his journey, and many curious cuts ["cuts" = engravings]." . *** WHO WAS THE AUTHOR: Evert Ysbrants IDES: [1657-ca.1708] Everard E. Isbrant was a Dane, he was appointed the Czar of Moscovy's [Russian] Ambassador to China in 1692. . This work covers his travels to China beginning in 1692 through 1694, taking some two years and 10 months to complete, successfully ending in 1695 with his arrival at Peking. . Ides was one of the most important early Europeans to describe the Gobi Desert. His account appeared in French translation, along with a work by Cornelis de Bruijn. See below. . *** CONTAINING THE SECOND BOOK: . A second book is also added: "TO WHICH IS ANNEX'D AN ACCURATE DEFCRIPTION OF CHINA, DONE ORIGINALLY BY A CHINEFE AUTHOR: With Feveral Remarks' by Way of Commentary, Alluding to What our European Authors have Writ of that Country." . *** . WITH A SECOND TITLE PAGE: "A Short Description of the Vast Empire of China by Dionysius Kao, a Native of That Country." . *** TRANSLATION FROM DUTCH INTO ENGLISH: "Printed in Dutch by the direction of Burgomaster Witzen, formerly Ambassador in England; & now Faithfully done into English." . *** WITH 30 ENGRAVED COPPER ETCHINGS: . This work contains engraved copper-etchings and a large folding map: . This is a lovely and charming early primary source, with 30 superb copper-etched engravings, 8 are folding, plus the large engraved folding map. . THE MAP: Commonly this book is found lacking the map. Our copy has the large etched map which is very decorative. It is in fairly nice condition for a work printed over 315 years ago. There is a bit of dark at the top one-third, some small, expertly mended tears, and remains in the large size: 68 x 51 cm. A good number of these maps were trimmed. All in all an excellent item. . The map has an elaborate cartouche, showing all of China, from Moscow East to the Pacific Ocean, The North and down South to India, Laos & the Southern provinces of China, including Formosa. Also shown are Ryukyu, Corea, Japan both of which are shown as islands, and all that falls inside this great square. . Famous coastal cities as Canton, Fokien, Suchon. Famous inland cities: Nanking, Peking and other major cities nicely shown. . Nicely illustrating geographical features: mountains, rivers, provincial lines, deserts, lakes, inland seas, to the Mediterranean Sea are shown. . *** THE CHAPTERS: . Chapters cover the journey from Moscow through Siberia and Tartar lands, with great accounts of the areas traversed, crossing of great rivers, with the entry to the border of China in Xixigar [Mongolia], Tartarian desert, with good description of Chinese buildings, Great Wall, music, diet, furniture, idols, transportation mode, their elaborate reception at the Court of Peking with entertainment by the Emperor [of China]. Description of the fabulous palace, the foreign Jesuits and the rare animal collection. *** . A THIRD PART: "SHORT DESCRIPTION OF CHINA" . To which is added a "SHORT DESCRIPTION OF CHINA" covering the provinces of that great land: Peking & the Imperial Court and metropolis. With a brief essay on each of the provinces cited, with products and attributes: [sic] Xanthun, Xansi, Xiesi, Honan, Leaotung, Nanking, Chekiang, Kiangsi, Huquang, Suchuen, Queicheu and Junan, Quaoangsi, Quoangtung, Fokien: covers some five pages as an important province with much war and suffering, where the Emperor's forces drove out the Dutch from Formosa or Tajoan [sic for Taiwan]. With a very lovely description of that island and the Spanish intrusion there. Essay on the bordering countries & their distances from China. With a major essay on early Fokien province, and Taiwan, with discussion of Ginseng and other medicinal plants. The second essay is a fascinating DESCRIPTION OF CHINA by a Chinese doctor, Dionysius Kao, who practiced in Siam and India, and was a Roman Catholic convert. . *** THE ENGRAVINGS & THE LARGE ENGRAVED MAP: Complete with all engraved illustrations and the RARE map: . FINELY ENGRAVED COPPER-ETCHED MAP: . This copy also contains an exceptionally clean and bright folding copper-engraved map. Commonly this book is found lacking the map. *** . A NOTE ON COLOR SCANS POSTED TO OUR WEBSITE: . Some of the color photos or scans posted to our website may show a darker or slightly different, or a bit discolored color than is actual. This is strictly due to the limitations of our scanner & digital camera, and does not reflect the true bright and light color of the paper. . The paper and all copper-etched engravings are very clean and bright. . *** CONDITION: The book is nicely bound in period original full brown tooled calf, 5 raised spine bands, with gilt decorations and covers with paneled cover designs. The covers have a tooled-design with a darker vertical oblong area in the center, with blind-stamped gilt design. The spine has a red leather label with gold-stamped titles. The binding is very solid, with some of the usual and very minor rubbing. . There is a bit of old, minor restoration to a few pages & the maps, else a very nice, clean copy. . Please review the color photos posted to our website, or ask us for better quality scans, please ask questions. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: E. Cox: A REFERENCE GULIDE TO THE LITERATURE OF TRAVEL p.330-331. "Ides, who was a Dane in the service of Peter the Great, set out from Moscow March 14th, 1692 . Traveling as a public character, he had the leisure to observe anything of note...He composed his journal for the information and satisfaction of Peter the Great who was well pleased with the results and rewarded the author with the post of Privy Councilor. The Russian embassy had less trouble with the enormous self-esteem of the Chinese than many earlier and later embassies. Before the Tartars became masters of China, it was almost impossible for foreigners to find admittance to the Imperial court. . Under the Emperor then ruling, Kanghi, ministers were courteously received and enabled to transact their business as at any other court. This accommodation was contrary to the temper & traditions of the old Chinese, who opposed it as much as they dared. Kang-hi was desirous of preventing Russian encroachments upon his territories and the Czar was anxious to establish a regular commerce with China. The exp- edition added considerable geographical knowledge to the little that was known about Northern Manchuria and China." * Oriental Library: CATALOGUE OF THE ASIATIC LIBRARY OF DR. G.E. Optice; sive de reflexionibus, refractionibus, inflexionibus & coloribus lucis libri tres

London: Samuel Smith and Benjamin Walford, 1706 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. First Latin edition. 219 leaves, [14] 1-348, 1-24, [2] 1-24, 21-43 [1] pp. 19 folding engraved plates, some damp spots to first few leaves, wormtrails and holes in margins and just affecting last two or three plates, contemporary vellum, remnants of leather spine label. ---- Babson 137; Wallis 179, Norman 1589. - The first edition of OPTICKS was printed two years earlier in English and without Newton's customary use of editorial assistance. He then employed Samuel Clarke to make a Latin translation with the addition of seven new Queries. At the end of the book are two mathematical treatises, DE QUADRATURA and ENUMERATIO LINEARUM TERTII ORDINIS, which Newton added to establish his priority over Leibniz in the invention of the calculus. Next to the PRINCIPIA, the OPTICKS stands as Newton's greatest work. Much of the a OPTICKS was written thirty years earlier and finally put into print in 1704, just a few months after Newton assumed the chair as President of the Royal Society. It summarized his discoveries and theories concerning light and color, the spectrum of sunlight, the degrees of refraction associated with different colors, the color circle, the invention of the reflecting telescope, the first workable theory of the rainbow, and interference effects in conjunction with Newton's rings. It expounds his corpuscular or emission theory of light..

GEDENKWAARDIGE REYS vanden Engelschen Capitain Robert Coverte, Eerst ter Zee; dog by Cambaye een ellendige Shipbreuck geleende hebbende, te Lande door Indostan, of Opper-Indien, Persien, Arabien, Asiatisch Turckyen, &c. met seer beswaarlijke

Leiden, Pieter Vander Aa, 1706.. omswervingen. Van Anno 1607, tot in 't Jaar 1611. Nu aldereerst uyt 't Engelsch vertaald. Text in Dutch or Flemish, translated from the English, 1706, 8vo, approximately 180 x 115 mm, 7 x 4½ inches, vignette on title page, folding map of middle east and India, 2 folding engraved plates, printed in black letter, pages: [4], 1-61, [5], bound in modern half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt lettered morocco label to spine, new endpapers. Occasional light browning to pages, otherwise a very good clean tight copy. There is very little information about Robert Coverte. Although styled on the title page as Captain Robert Covert, it seems he was steward on the 'Ascension' which sailed from Plymouth in 1607. The vessel ran aground going into Surat, the primary port of the Moghul Empire, but the crew escaped ashore in boats. An English merchant introduced them to the court of the Great Mogul at Agra arriving in December 1609. Coverte with his companions started out for home from Agra at the beginning of 1610 choosing to travel overland through Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad. They reached Aleppo in December 1610 and then took a ship back to England arriving in April 1611. Coverte's account of his travels was first published in London in 1612 and again in 1614. Provenance: Scheler v. Lorenz M. Rheude with his color-lithographed armorial bookplate to front pastedown (see Schutt-Lehn 38.202). ----I. Cushing, VI A-12; NLM/Blake, p.473; Waller 9905; Osler 572; Choulant, p.184-5; Roth 309. - EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION. The Augsburg printer and publisher, Andreas Maschenbaur, acquired the original woodcut blocks of Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica, to use 19 of them in his editions of 1706 and 1723. After publication of the second edition of the Fabrica in 1555, the whereabouts of these woodcut blocks remained unknown until Maschenbauer used them in the present work. The book was intended for painters. "On the title-page we find the five skulls from the principal book, at the end five other illustrations pertaining to the skulls, beside these, three skeletons, and four muscle-manikins from the same book, also four other muscle-manikins, and the two nude figures from the Epitome." (Choulant).II. Choulant, p.257; NLM/Blake, p.83. - EXTREMELY RARE FIRST GERMAN EDITION, first published in Rome 1697 under the title 'Anatomia dei pittori. Cesio's anatomy for painters was published after his death (1686) by the Dutch painter-engraver Arnold van Westerhout who worked in Florence for Grandduke Ferdinand of Tuscany and came to Rome about 1700 where he also died. Cesio was a pupil of Pietro Berrettini da Cartona and lived mainly in Rome. His large designs are of great beauty and in their flowing manner reminiscent of Annibale Caracci after whom he engraved some pieces. The present 16 anatomic plates include 2 skeletons and 14 myologic plates, among them 5 complete muscle-manikins. Very Good.

Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni. - From Coronelli's Teatro della Guerra - A very rare map taken from Coronelli’s "Teatro della Guerra diviso in XXXXVIII parti" published in Venice (though the front page says Naples) between 1706 and 1709. The collection contains hundreds of views, geographic maps and sea charts depicting the entire world. Ermanno Armao, who studied Coronelli’s production, wrote "it is not easy to determine how many and which are the volumes that belong to the collection ". The map is made using the plate of the Western Hemispher map by Coronelli, published in his Atlante Veneto (1690). The decorative border are cut and the map is folded. A very fine map of the Western Hemisphere including the discoveries made by Abel Tasman in Australia and an early image of the New Zealand coastline, plus California as an Island. The treatment of the Northeastern Coast of Asia and Japan are also quite unusual, including a representation of Terra di Iesso, the mythical land bridge which was frequently shown to extend from Asia to Alaska, with only the Straits of Anian separating the two continents. California is featured as an island on the second Sanson model, with only C. Blanco named. To the north is Stretto d'Anian, northwest is Terra di Iesso, ("Scoperta dagli Holland, l'Anno 1643"), and farther west is Giaponi. The American west is dominated by Nuovo Mexico, in which live the Apaches, seemingly the only Indian tribe named. In the Pacific, portions of New Zealand, Van Diemens land, Carpentaria, and Nuova Guinea are shown. Shirley extolls the two world sheets as "a worthwhile addition to any collection. They combine the most up-to-date cartographical information with elegant engraving and retained accompanying decoration." Leighly 89; McLaughlin 105; Shirley 548. Dimensioni 430 425mm

America Accurate in Imperia, Regna, Staus & Populos Divisia, ad Usum Ludovici XV Galliarum Regis. Carte d'Amerique.

Americas: Amsterdam. Covens et Mortier c1741. Copper engraved map of of the Americas from Covens & Mortier's " Nieuwe Atlas, Inhoudennde vier Gedeeltens der Waereld.. " Original full wash colour; verso blank. Black and white strap work title cartouche [as issued]."Avertisement" on black & white drape to lower right corner The map after Guillaume De l'Isle's shows the whole continent, with part of Europe and Africa to the East. The map includes a Prime Meridian declared by Louis XIII and Pope Alexander VI's Line of Demarcation that divided the world (outside of Europe) between Portugal and Spain. Includes detailed information about discoveries and explorations particularly around the Magellan strait and the discovery of the Falkland islands in 1706. Dark impression; bright full wash colour; printed on heavy paper, short centre fold split at lower margin with old repair to verso and lower margin; old red crayon numbers to verso. Covens & Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. The French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle (1675−1726) was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences when he was 27 years old and subsequently became the first person to receive the title Premier Géographe du Roi (principal geographer to the king). At the time de l'Isle was engaged in cartographic research, the prestige of a cartographer and the authority of his maps were gauged by the veracity of the cartographer's sources, i.e., the explorers and travelers who reported details of their travels to geographers and cartographers in Europe. Many of de l'Isle's maps were reissued by the publishing house of Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Coven in Amsterdam in their Atlas Nouveau, which was published in multiple editions, the earliest of which dates to 1730.
