Of the Law of Nature and Nations.

Oxford: printed by L. Lichfield, for A. and J. Churchil, & 10 others,, 1703. Eight Books. Written in Latin. Translated into English, from the best Edition. With a short Introduction. Folio (313 x 200 mm). Contemporary panelled speckled calf, rebacked to style, red morocco spine label, raised bands, compartments decorated and ruled in gilt, boards ruled and decorated with fleurons in blind, edges sprinkled red. With the errata leaf bound at the end of the introduction. 19th-century ownership inscription of William Hodges Tylden Pattenson to front pastedown, dated 1857. Some minor wear to extremities and marks to boards, occasional foxing, otherwise a bright, fresh copy in excellent condition. First edition in English, first published as De jure Naturae et Gentium libri octo in 1672. The legal theorist, historian and theologian Samuel von Pufendorf (1632–1694) was the first professor of the Law of Nature and of Nations in a German university at Heidelberg. In his works on political science "he attempted to strike a middle path between the rationalism of Grotius and the voluntarism of Hobbes. He envisaged the state of nature as a war of all against all, from which men would wish to save themselves by joining in a society whose laws were imposed by the ruler's will. But he also argued that such laws must conform to natural law, whose duties he maintained, unlike Grotius, were imposed on man by God's will … In preference to Grotius's a posteriori method, he adopted a sociological form of inquiry into man's condition in society" (The New Palgrave III, p. 1074).

2 parts in 1 vol.

Leipzig & Dresden. Johann Christoph Miethen. 1703. [iv], 210, 287, [1] pages. Titles in red and black, woodcut frontispiece in part 1 showing a cockerel - repeated on verso of the last leaf, 1 folding table, diagrams and numerous tables in the text. Modern half calf, titled in blind over marbled boards. 8vo. Binding: 167 x 107 mm.Small repair to 1 leaf in part 2, with loss of page number and 1 letter only. However, a good copy overall. This is the first complete edition of this curious book - part 1 only was first published in 1695. The title states that the name of the author is contained in the A B C, and most probably it is there in all the anagrams and puzzles in the book, but his name has not been discovered. A rare work on the significance of the letters of the alphabet - mystical, musical, historical and alchemical. The book is full of puzzles, anagrams, ciphers, codes etc., and it has been the subject of scholarly study particularly relating to Bach's music and whether he was influenced by this book.

DAI MIN KYUHEN BANKOKU JINSEKI ROTEI ZENZU: GREAT MAP OF CHINA AND IT'S SURROUND

      - Japan c.[1703]. Original gray rubbed silk covers, a Japanese reprint of the 1663 Chinese map, neatly rebacked,127 x 137.5 cm., a few old mended worm holes, minor flaws, hand colored, folds down to 21.5 x 34 cm. R A R E FIRST & ONLY EDITION Translation of the Chinese Title: continued: "WITH THE WHOLE PICTURE OF THE PEOPLE'S HISTORY AND ALL ROADS." . Chinese pinyin title is: DA MING JIU BIAN WAN GUO, REN JI LU CHEN QUAN TU. . *** A marvelous and grand size example. The work basically shows the whole country and its surrounding areas. Minor tears, most repaired, some old stains & repaired worming, actually quite nice. Remarkable in its detail and features. It shows the Great Wall at the top, or Northern orientation, geographic features include: rivers, lakes, cities and villages, mountains are painted in green. With a list of foreign countries at the left margin, showing the distance in "Ri" or miles. Important administrative areas in red outline, islands named, the sea around the whole country is done in a stylistic wave pattern set in the middle of an ocean border. Includes China's East coast, Shanghai &c. . *** At the East are islands of the "Women, Long People, Hairy People" &c. Essentially a grand world map, with China occupying the center, other countries shown on the exterior of the map. With a list & explanation on Chinese cities at the bottom, with commentaries on each of the provinces to the right. European countries are shown to the West, each properly named. The whole map is hand-colored with gouache or pastel water colors. There are four marginal stamped cinnabar collector's seals. . *** CONDITION: The map was re-backed professionally a about 100 years ago. There is some loss in a couple of the folds, please see the scans to observe this, else some minor old worming but restored from the verso. Now solid and stable. . There are some old stains on the edges & in the folds, this does not penetrate to the front, if it does the color of the map ameliorates this. By and large a nice work in good plus condition. . Finding maps of this enormous size and subject are difficult, it goes without saying, that we can not always fine pristine examples that have resided in Japan where insects love to eat this kind of hand-made Washi paper. Seldom found for sale anywhere these days. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: This exact map has been cited and illustrated in: T. Oda: THE WORLD IN JAPANESE MAPS UNTIL THE MID 19TH CENTURY, plate #23, on pages 50-51. The Oda example is mostly without color, while ours is nicely hand-colored. *** Suitable for framing and wall display. Maps of this period, subject & grand size are exceptionally S C A R C E. . *** Actual scans (incl. one from the book of Oda's descriptive [Japanese] text) are posted to our website.

        Arithmetic, called the computational science].

Moskva Sinodalna 1703 - Folio (28 x 17 cm). ll. 326, including title, printed in Cyrillic letters in red and black within typographic borders, with engraved frontispiece and plate by Mikhail Karnovskii and 3 folding letterpress tables, numerous woodcut figures in text; some leaves remargined and with tears mostly to inner margin, occasionally with minor loss of text, lacking 1 plate (last plate), red wax seals to upper fly leaf, title and first page. Near contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with blind tooled decor in compartments; worn. One of the most important books printed during the reign of Peter the Great. Leontii Magnitskii (1669 – 1739), a prominent Russian scientist and professor at the School of Mathematics and Navigation, compiled the present work as a kind of encyclopaedia of exact sciences on the orders of Peter the Great, issued in February 1701. Magnitskii included the most up to date information on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, astronomy and navigation with the aim of 'educat[ing] Russian young men and people of all the ranks and ages.' Even more significantly, it was here that he introduced Arabic, rather than traditional Cyrillic, numbers for the first time. Lomonosov himself used this work in his studies, referring to it as 'the gates of knowledge.' Published in an edition of 2400 copies, it was used widely as a textbook for almost a century, and is something of a rarity, especially when complete. Magnitskii's work reflects the progressive thinking that started to dominate during the reign of Peter the Great.         Instrumentall Musick For New Years day 1703. Composed by Jo.n Lenton.

[London, 1703]. - Oblong 8vo. Musical manuscript in English, on paper written in a single cursive hand in brown ink, four staves to a page. 12 leaves: blank, title, dedication, 11 pp. of music on 6 leaves, 3 blanks. Dedication to Queen Anne on second recto. In a contemporary morocco binding, exuberantly tooled and gilt by Robert Steel, arguably the finest binder in England at the time; board edges gilt, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. An exquisite musical manuscript, composed and bound for royal presentation on New Years' Day (then celebrated on Lady Day, March 25). Inscribed to Queen Anne of England. Signed "J.L." at the end, the pieces are marked "Overture", "Minuett" (bass), "Minuett" and "Scotch Air", one passage to be played "slow". - The violinist, singer and composer Lenton joined the ensemble of royal musicians, known as the King's Musick, in 1681 under Charles II and played at the coronations of James II and of William and Mary (cf. New Grove X, 665). As violinist, Lenton accompanied William to Holland in 1691 and contributed to the royal musical repertoire. He wrote incidental music for some dozen plays between 1682 and 1705 and accumulated the offices of Gentleman Extraordinary at the Royal Chapel (1685) and Groom of the Vestry (1708). The binder Robert Steel (fl. 1668-1711) apprenticed with Samuel Mearne and took possession of his tools after his death in 1686. In turn, one of Steel's workmen, Thomas Elliott, secured Mearne's tools and became a principal binder for the Harleian Library. - In fine condition: the splendid binding shows a repeated flower-and-foliage tool flanked by rules forming the outer frame; the panels have small fleurons and lobate tools at left and right from which spring billowy sails and branches with clusters of grapes and curled leaves; a gilt-lettered title "Lenton New Year 1703" fills the central cartouche of drawer handles; concentric circles and fleurons cover the spine. For the binding cf. Maggs Bros., Bookbinding in the British Isles Catalogue 1075 (1987), no. 118 (the outer frame tool, there called a roll) and Catalogue 1212 (1996), no. 70 (frame tool), as well as Foot, The Henry Davis Gift II, no. 148.         Two scrolls, 257 x 11,900 mm. & 257 x 12,570 mm., each containing stamped & hand-colored depictions of soldiers in formation

At the end of the second scroll: "Created in 1703 according to Takeda family traditions." Two remarkable and rare scrolls, "printed" using small woodcut stamps on fine shiny paper. The scrolls depict a military commander and his troops taking up positions before a battle as practiced by the Takeda family, one of the most important military families in Japanese history. The soldiers and horses have been stamped onto the scroll and then hand-colored; uma-jirushi (battle standards) and banners are painted in with brushes. Hatamoto ("under the banners") were samurai in direct service of the Tokugawa shogunate. They commanded sonae (regiments). About fifteen different and highly detailed stamps are employed in the scrolls. The hand-coloring gives them enormous variety; each squad of soldiers are "dressed" in different colored garb based on their function and rank. The hand-drawn battle standards and banners are colored in a wide variety of tones and shapes denoting different units. The colors include red, yellow, black, brown, green, dark and sky blue, white, pale red, etc. The first scroll begins with infantry, including one soldier beating on a drum carried by another soldier. There are several on horses carrying banners. Their uniforms and body armor are vividly portrayed. Ashigaru (foot soldiers) are carrying bows and arrows as well as muskets. Several different kinds of bugyo (swordsmen) are shown. Heishi (lower level samurai) surround the horsemen carrying banners. We also see shibusha (messengers or runners), sakuba (back-up horses), hokogashira (another kind of foot soldier), mushabugyo (formations of soldiers), hatabugyo (formations of soldiers carrying banners), and metsukebusha (higher rank samurai). The second scroll depicts mochiyaribugyo (spear carriers), gusoku (soldiers carrying additional footwear), taisho (generals), ishi (military doctors) protected by soldiers, shibusha again, kinshushi (letter writers), yonin (high ranking generals led by drummers), shinshugashira (commanders of untested soldiers), yakunin (government observers), kunizuke busha (departmental observers), konida bugyo (troops escorting supplies carried by horses), ninpu (low level workers). At the end of the second scroll, it is written that there are a total of 1392 soldiers depicted on the two scrolls as well as 123 horses (87 horses for riding and 36 for transport of goods). The beginning of the scrolls contain gold and silver speckled "endpapers." In fine condition preserved in a modern box. The National Diet Library has a similar example (but only one scroll).

Kevod Hakhamim: be'urim 'al ha-agadot mi-Talmud Yerushalmi. (Bound with:) Kevod ha-bayit: hibur 'al kol agadot mi-helek rishon 'En Ya'akov.

Hamburg, (Thomas Rose), 1703 & 1707. Folio: 2 volumes in 1: (II),92; (II),111 not numbered leaves. Binding first half 20th century. Cloth 31 cm (§ Honor of the Wise, and Commentary on aggadot in the Ein Ya'akov of R. Jacob ibn Habib by R. Shimon Wolf ben Jacob of Pintshov) (Ref: J.Chr. Wolf, 'Bibliotheca Hebraea', pars II, Hamburg, 1721, p. 988/89; As there seem to be more than 10 ways to transcribe the title of this book and the name of its author, we adopted the transcription of Worldcat) (Details: Printed completely in rabbinic Hebrew type. Text on both titles within a 'Benveniste-like frame', consisting of woodcut architectural borders. (See below) Depicted on the title is an arched gateway. On the arch stands an imitation of the printer's mark of the Italian Sephardic Jewish printer Immanuel Benveniste, who printed ca. 1650 Jewish books in Amsterdam. His printer's mark was widely imitated by other Jewish printers. It depicts a castle, a standing lion facing the castle, and above that a star. The text of the book is printed in 2 columns. On the front flyleaf is an inscription, explaining succinctly in Hebrew and in Dutch the contents of the first title) (Condition: Cover worn at the extremes. For the endpapers woody paper has been used. The margins of the first title, which is soiled and slightly waterstained, are thumbed; some small old paper repairs to the edges of the first and the last 2 leaves; a few small holes in the title and in the last leaf. Paper yellowing, sometimes browning; partly waterstained; 2 pinpoint wormholes in the first 8 leaves) (Note: Next to nothing is known about Simon or Simeon Wolf ben Jacob, Simon Wolf Jacobsohn, Simon Wolf ben Jäkel, Simon Wolf ben Jekel, Shimion Volf ben Ya'akov, Shimon Volf ben Jekil, there are more possibilities. He was from Pinczow, a small town (70% jewish) not far from Krakow. 'Wegen seiner Bedeutung wurde es mitunter (16th, 17th century) 'polnisches Athen genannt'. (Wikipedia s.v. Pinczow, German) The restored Synagogue of the 16th century is still a sight worth seeing there. The town was once called 'ancient Judea in miniature'. Simon had his books published in Hamburg by the Christian publisher Thomas Rose. Hamburg was a city with a large Jewish population in those days. The Jewish community there began with the settlement of Portuguese 'conversos' at the turn of the 17th century. Thomas Rose bought the typographical equipment of the Hamburg Jewish printer Rebenlini. Rose printed from 1686 till 1709. He was joined by his son Johann who kept on printing Jewish books till 1721. 'Rose acquired later additional fonts and decorative material, including a Benveniste-like frame which he employed on several title pages. Steinschneider describes this usage, as 'cum Frontisp. ad instar Benveniste (Leo cum stella etc.)'. Among the titles that Rose printed are R. Israel Samuel ben Solomon Calahorra's 'Yismah Yisrael'(1686), an alphabetic compendium of the 'halakoth' in the 'Shulhan Arukh', followed by R. Berechiah Berakh Shapira's 'Zeta Berakh', discourses on the weekly Torah readings, and 'Perush Nevi'im Rishonum (1687) with the commentaries of Don Isaac Abrabanel and Jacob Fidanque. (...) Among the other titles that Rose published are R. Joseph Guenzberg's 'Leket Yosef' (1688), homilies and literal interpretations arranged alphabetically; R. Meir ha-Kohen Poppers' 'Or Zaddikim' (1690), kaballistic customs and practices based on the teachings of R. Isaac Luria (ha-Ari), and R. Judah Leib Pukhovitser's 'Divrei Hakhamim (1692), a 2 part ethical discourses and halakhic novellae with kaballistic content. Almost all of the book published by Rose were reprints of earlier editions'. (M.J. Heller, 'The Seventeenth century Hebrew books', vol. 1. Leiden, Brill, 2011, XLIII) Both texts of Simon Wolf ben Jakob are however first editions of not yet published works. The first work in this binding is called 'Kevod Hakhamim' ('Honor of the Wise', or 'Respect for the Sages') The following is based on the information we found in Wolf's 'Bibliotheca Hebraea' and on some Wikipedia lemmata. Simon Wolf ben Jacob was possibly a Rabbi. He is mentioned once in the 'Bibliotheca Hebraea' and is introduced as 'R. Simeon Wolf ben Jacob'. As there is no list of abbreviations in this 'Bibliotheca', we assume that he might have been a Rabbi. Simon Wolf ben Jacob's name figures in an 'Appendix' to the 'Bibliotheca Hebraea', a chapter called 'De subsidiis, quae ad Talmud rectius intelligendum vel tractandum a Christianis aut Iudaeis profecta sunt'. (BH p. 988) Simon Wolf ben Jacob is numbered there among the commentators who produced explaining 'commentationes' on the 'Aggadot(h), (...) i.e. historias, apologos & allegorias disquisitiones, quae in Gemara exstant'. (BH p. 989) Aggadoth (singular Aggadah) 'refer to the homiletic and non-legalistic exegetical texts in the classical rabbanic literature of Judaism, particularly recorded in the Talmud and Mishna'. (Wikipedia s.v. 'Aggadah' (English)) Simon Wolf is not in the first place a compiler, it is argued in this appendix of the Bibliotheca Hebraea, but he is more a commentator. 'Explicarunt autem prae ceteris, eas ('disquisitiones' to the Aggadoth) quidem, quas Talmud Hierosolymitanum suppeditat, R. Sam. Japhe & R. Simeon Wolf ben Jacob'. (BH p. 989) Simon Wolf ben Jacob belonged apparantly to the school of commentators that commented upon the Gemara, which was produced by scholars in Israel ca. 350-400 A.D., also known as the 'Yerushalmi'. (For this school see Wikipedia s.v. 'Gemara' (English)) The other school, the school of the socalled 'Babylonian Talmud', was far more influential in the history of Judaism than that of the 'Yerushalmi'. 'Despite this, the Jerusalem Talmud remains an indispensable source of knowledge of the development of the Jewish Law in the Holy Land. (...) There was some revival of scholarly interest in the Jerusalem Talmud of the 19th and 20th centuries, and modern scholars use it as an invaluable source for the history of Judaism and the development of rabbinical law in antiquity'. (Wikipedia, s.v. 'Jerusalem Talmud', (English)) The Sages mentioned in the title are the scholars on whose authority the Jewish religious tradition rests. 'Jewish tradition had been passed down intact since the time of Moses, with the chain of authority vested in the recognized sages of each generation. These sages had received the authentic tradition, interpreted and explained it to their contemporaries and handed it on to the scholars of the following generation. Rabbinic authority was a basic precept in Jewish religious consciousness. Reliance on and respect for the sages was fundamental'. (M.D. Angel, 'Voices in exile: A study in Sephardic intellectual history', Richmond 1991, p. 18) On the second work of Simon Wolf ben Jacob in this binding, 'Kevod ha-habayit' (Honor of the House), we found some information on the site: "virtualjudaica.com" (/Item/13918/Kevod_ha-Bayit), where a copy of this second volume was auctioned on March 7, 2006. We cite verbatim: 'Only edition of this homiletic commentary on aggadot in the Ein Ya'akov of R. Jacob ibn Habib by R. Shimon Wolf ben Jacob of Pintshov. (...) Within the arch the text (on the second title page) is headed at the peak of the arch with the verse, 'This is the gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter' (Psalms 118:20). The title page is dated from the verse, 'The glory of this latter house shall be greater (than that of the former)' (Haggai 2:9). The author's name does not appear on the title page. However, it is alluded to in the beginning of the introduction, which starts on the verso of the title page, from the enlarged initial letters. This volume, (the volume which was auctioned in 2006) as the title page informs, is part one of Ein Ya'akov. It covers tractates Berakhot through Hagigah. At the end of the volume is the colophon, in which the wish to publish other volumes from this commentary is expressed, a wish that, unfortunately, was not realized. (...) The first printing house to make use of Benveniste's (printer's) mark outside of Amsterdam was that of Thomas Rose, a Christian printer of Hebrew books in Hamburg from 1686-1709' (End of quote). Both works in our copy of Simon Wolf ben Jacob seem to be rare. Of the first one we found in KVK (search 'Kevod' and '1703', 'Kevod' and '1707') one copy in the British Library and one in Cambridge University Library. Of the second we found also 2 copies, one held by the British Library, and the other by the 'Jüdisches Museum Wien') (Collation: pi2, 1 - 46-2; pi2, 1 - 55-2, 56-2 (minus 2) (Photographs on request)

"A magnificent work of art... the most elaborately decorated print of its kind in our history ..." (Laur. Nielsen). "This funeral sermon for Christian V's young son, Christian Gyldenløve,is considered to be the most spectacular of all Danish funeral sermon prints from the Baroque ... printed with large fraktur using elaborate woodcut initials. The book's luxurious range of copperprints is preceded with a large (60 x 42 cm) portrait of Gyldenløve engraved by Andr. Reinhardt after a draft by the German Johann Sigmundt Ebert and Gottfr. Fuchs. Andr. Reinhardt has also engraved the six historically interesting giant copperplates showing the funeral procession moving through Copenhagen and the funeral in the church Vor Frue. The largest plate measures 39 x 184 cm. The procession took place in the evening so all the plates are dark and dense. The print run was only 275 copies." [Birkeland 75]. Contains apart from the sermon descriptions of the ceremonies, the procession etc. and an epitaph by the Danish bishop and hymn-writer Thomas Kingo.

Account of the Commitment, Arraignment, Tryal and Condemnation of

1703 - (BAYARD, NICHOLAS). An Account of the Commitment, Arraignment, Tryal and Condemnation of Nicholas Bayard Esq; for High Treason, in Endeavouring to Subvert the Government of the Province of New York in America, by his Signing and Procuring others to Sign Scandalous Libels. London: Printed at New York by order of his Excellency the Lord Cornbury, and reprinted at London, 1703. Fol. 31, [1] p. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, very skillfully executed in period style. Final leaf H2 supplied from another copy, title lightly browned, else a very attractive copy. The first English (and earliest obtainable) edition of one of the earliest printed American judicial proceedings. Nicholas Bayard (1644-1707), nephew of Peter Stuyvesant, was a mayor of New York and a member of the governor's council. When Jacob Leisler seized control of the government of New York in 1689, Bayard was a prime target, and he fled to Albany, where he was seized, brought back to the fort, and imprisoned. Finally Governor Sloughter arrived from England and had Bayard released. In 1697 the new governor, Bellomont, accused Bayard of complicity with the previous governor in the encouragement and protection of pirates. Bayard was removed from office and later accused of encouraging sedition and mutiny and of being a Jacobite. Tried for high treason, he was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. The present work contains the entire text of the 1701/2 proceedings. The unobtainable American edition, printed in New York by Bradford in 1702, is known by only a few copies, in the usual old institutions; this English edition, which contains additional text (pp. 27- 32), is almost as scarce. Howes B256; Church 809; Sabin 53436; European Americana 703/12; Ritz, American Judicial Proceedings, 1.05(2c). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Testo in francese. Solida legatura moderna in piena pelle, dorso cinque nervi con titolo e fregi in oro. Carte perfettamente conservate entro brossura coeva. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
