Les Costes aux Environs de la Riviere de Misisipi

Paris 1701 - This map focuses on the French explorations and discoveries in the Mississippi Valley and the Gulf Coast. Here, de Fer highlights information gleaned from the expeditions of La Salle and Iberville and its primary purpose was to show the progress of French exploration in the region. The map shows the basically correct relationship of the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico. La Salle had explored the Mississippi from the north in 1682-83 and returned by sea to establish a French colony in 1685. He missed the Mississippi delta and landed on the Texas coast, an error probably due to his inability to calculate longitude and because prominent maps of the period placed the mouth of the river far to the west of its true location. The site of La Salle's ill-fated colony near Matagorda Bay in modern Texas is shown and the title cartouche also dramatizes the explorer's tragic death at the hands of his own men., Size : 225x340 (mm), 8.875x13.375 (Inches), Original Outline Coloring

Traité médico-philosophique sur l'aliénation mentale mentale, ou la manie.Paris: Chez Richard, Caille et Ravier, An IX [1800-01].

First edition, a fine copy, of "one of the foremost medical classics, giving as it did a great impetus to humanitarian treatment of the insane." (Garrison).<br/><br/> ❧Grolier/Horblit 54; Lilly <i>Notable Medical Books</i> 155; Norman 1701; Heirs of Hippocrates 1070; Garrison-Morton 4922. <br/><br/> Philippe Pinel's <i>Traité médico-philosophique sur l'aliénation mentale mentale, ou la manie</i>, which presented the textual foundation of psychiatry, stands as the first great publication of the nineteenth century in clinical medicine, and at the same time as one of the paradigmatic expressions of the medical and scientific revolution that was taking place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. A reform movement had begun gathering momentum in Paris during the 1780s, calling for a new approach to medicine based upon observation, experience, new nosologies, and expanded use of autopsies for pathological studies. Pinel was a leader in this movement, helping to reorganize hospitals, establish a new medical curriculum, unify medicine and surgery, and promote hospital-based patient study and direct clinical experience.<br/> "In August 1793 Pinel was appointed 'physician of the infirmatories' at the Bicêtre, the public hospice for men in Paris that included two hundred mentally ill patients. For nineteen months he made extensive studies of these men, whom he released from the chains that had been used to confine mental patients. In 1795 Pinel left the Bicêtre to assume the position of chief physician at the Salpêtriére, the large Paris hospital for women with mental disorders and chronic illnesses. There he established an advanced psychiatric hospital and the first training program for the new specialty of psychiatry. The principles later described in Pinel's <i>Traité</i> were applied at the Salpêtriére, which became the most highly recognized institution in the world at that time for its clinical care and treatment of the mentally ill and for its related teaching and research activities.<br/> "In his <i>Traité</i>, Pinel departed from past interpretations of mental illness, which placed it within a supernatural or spiritual, rather than a somatic, realm, and accepted the mentally ill as legitimate patients in the domain of medicine. According to Pinel, the manifestations of insanity, including disturbed reason, inappropriate thought, bizarre behavior, and exaggerated passions, represented phenomena of natural history and its pathology that could be studied like those of any other medical or surgical condition. He studied the historical development, treatment, and outcome of mental illnesses, often for years, and if the illnesses resulted in death, he called for autopsies to examine tor pathological anatomy. Pinel's system of treatment for mental illness included good hygiene, a favorable environment, activities, work, and the avoidance of drastic physical and medical measures. He introduced a psycho-therapeutic technique called moral therapy, which used a kind and benevolent approach to the patient during interviews.<br/> "Pinel had a great interest in nosography, but his classification system for psychiatry was deliberately simple. He described five different species of mental derangement: (1) melancholia, (2) mania without delirium, (3) mania with delirium, (4) dementia, and (5) idiotism. Pinel held that the prime need for psychiatry was to establish an effective typology of insanity, with descriptions of specific disease entities. He believed that traumatic events in a person's life could initiate insanity in one so predisposed, and he illustrated this concept with examples of loss of love, fortune, and other stress-provoking situations such as the turmoil that occurred during the French Revolution.<br/> "Apart from his contributions to medicine and psychiatry, Pinel was a remarkable linguist, trained in classical Greek and Latin as well as the contemporary European languages. He cherished a deep respect for Hippocrates and the latter's humanitarian and observational approach to medicine. Pinel was also an intimate member of the main intellectual movement of the period, the Idéologues. The last of the French Philosophes, the Idéologues introduced a practical movement toward a more complex and organic conception of nature, humankind, and society; for them science and experimentation were essential to their encompassing concepts. Pinel's circle of friends included Condillac, Condorcet, Cabanis, Destutt de Tracy, and Benjamin Franklin, as well as many other major physicians and scientists.<br/> "A second, enlarged edition of Pinel's <i>Traité</i> was published in 1809 with the abbreviated title <i>Traité médico-philosophique sur l'alienation mentale</i>. Translations appeared in German (1801), Spanish (1804), English (1806), and Italian (1830)." A crisp clean copy includes the final blank. *Tyrrell was a Whig theorist, friend and colleague of John Locke, whose writings were important for the history of liberalism. In this study of Moral Philosophy he concludes that the notion of "the Common Good" is not only the whole law of Nature but the revealed Law of Moses and the great design of Christ&#39;s coming into the World. The second part of the work is an interesting point by point comparison of Hobbes&#39; Principles with the law of nature as he sketched it in the first part. Tyrrell was a popularizer who made the political theories accessible to the general public (see Julia Rudolph "Revolution By Degrees: James Tyrrell and Whig Political Thought in the Late 17th Century").

- Edition originale. (28). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Though Reynard is sly, amoral, cowardly, and self-seeking, he is still a sympathetic hero whose cunning is a necessity for survival. He symbolizes the triumph of craft over brute strength, usually personified by Isengrim, the greedy and dull-witted wolf. Some of cyclic stories collected around him, such as those telling of the wolf or bear fishing with his tail through a hole in the ice, are found throughout the world; others, like that of the sick lion cured by the wolf&#146;s skin, are derived from Greco-Roman sources. The cycle arose in the area between Flanders and Germany in the 10th and 11th centuries when clerks began to forge Latin beast epics out of popular tales The main literary tradition of Reynard the Fox descends from the extant French &#145;branches&#146; of the Roman de Renart (about 30 in number, nearly 40,000 lines of verse). The facetious portrayal of rustic life, the camel as a papal legate speaking broken French, the animals riding on horses and recounting elaborate dreams all suggest the atmosphere of 13th-century France" (Merriam-Webster&#146;s Encyclopedia of Literature)."Caxton&#146;s immediate successors as printers of the Historye of Reynart the Foxe, Wynkyn de Worde and Richard Pynson, both published illustrated editions using the same woodcuts.         Historie der Sevarambes. Volkeren die een Gedeelte van het darde Vast-land bewoonen, gemeenlyk Zuid-land genaamd

Amsterdam: Willem de Coup, Willem Lamsvelt, Philip Verbeek, and Joannes Lamsvelt, 1701. Small quarto, four parts in one volume, engraved frontispiece by J. Lamsvelt (dated 1701) and 16 plates, paper a little fragile, repairs to the fore-edges of 12 pages and 1 plate, some staining; otherwise a good copy in early vellum, new endpapers. The "Vlamingh edition" Very rare: the "Vlamingh edition" of this fully illustrated account of an imaginary voyage to western Australia, based on the story of the wreck of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck in 1656. This work was part of a suite of three separately issued works which related to Dutch experiences in Australia. The companion volumes were Willem Vlamingh&#39;s exceedingly rare Journaal wegens de Voyagie of 1701, and a second imaginary account of the same region, the tale of the shipwrecked sailor Jacques Sadeur by Gabriel Foigny. At the time of their publishing Vairasse d&#39;Alais, Foigny and Vlamingh were some of the only contemporary works which related to Dutch ambitions in western Australia. Taken as a group, the three works would have been considered an essential introduction to what was known or hypothesised about the Great South Land, and it is certain that the wild imaginings about fabulous lands contributed as much to the enthusiasm for voyages of exploration as the more sober factual accounts. In this sense, the "history" of the Severambes is particularly important, because it is the only one of the three that is illustrated, with marvellous depictions of the imaginary Australian coast.

Third Edition.A grossly mis-numbered printing (and with the author's name misspelled as "Standley" on both dedication pages) includes the lovely frontispiece of the author by Faithorne along with twenty-six 8" high, full-length portraits of different philosophers scattered throughout the text (for examples, see the portraits of Socrates, Xenophon and Diogenes below). The first edition of this work appeared in 1655-1662 in four parts and the second edition of 1687 was the first to contain all four parts together in one volume. This third edition follows the format of the second. Stanley - whose Life of the Author is printed here for the first time - was one of the foremost classical scholars of his day, here presenting the progress of thought in Ancient Greece in the form of a series of critical biographies of the philosophers. Stanley's aim was to provide the necessary information concerning all "those on whom the attribute of Wise was conferred." He "adopted the general structure, the biographical emphasis, the doxographical method characteristic of Diogenes [Laertius]. Stanley's history ran into four editions in England between 1655 and 1743 and was translated into Latin and published in that language at Amsterdam in 1690, Leipzig in 1711, and Venice as late as 1733." [Encyclopedia of Philosophy, VI, p. 227] ¾ leather using contemporary marbled boards. Pages unevenly foxed (and grossly mis-numbered) throughout. Still, a very pretty copy of this fascinating early work on the history of philosophy. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]
