Operationes Chirurgicae novum lumen Exhibentes Obstricantibus, quo fideliter manifestatur Ars Obstetricandi.

Andream Dyckhuisen, Lugundi Batavorum 1701 - Early treatise on surgical procedures in obstetrics. Outsize 8vo, xviii, 274pp, (6)pp. 38 copper engraved plates on 35 leaves, all edges speckled in red. Full period vellum binding with original vellum ties. Blind stamped with decoration, title in manuscript at spine. Interesting end paper with part of paste down not present, obviously a contemporary condition, as a previous owner bookplate is laid on to the board and the half sheet. Internally it is a lovely copy, crisp plates and text, the title page printed in red and black. OCLC 14302986. [Garrison Morton 6253; Wellcome p.460; Waller, 2423]. "Deventer, born at The Hague, may be numbered among the founders of modern obstetrics. As a practitioner in his native city, he directed his greatest efforts to the practice of midwifery and to the study of its many unsolved problems. He was also interested in orthopedics and spent a great deal of time studying the bones of the pelvis. It was through his investigations of the normal and deformed pelvis and their effects on the course of labor that he was able to make significant contributions to the science of midwifery. The present work on obstetrics was first published in the Dutch language at Leiden. A more elaborate Latin edition appeared in 1701, and this French translation was made from it." (Heirs, citing the 1734 French edition.) According to Morton's Medical Bibliography, "This work gives the first accurate description of the female pelvis and its deformities, and the effect of the latter in complicating labour. The first edition (The Hague 1701) contains a relatively unattractive frontispiece portrait of the author, engravd by himself." In this 1701 Latin edition, the frontispiece is replaced by an additional engraved title with illustrations of the foetus in different positions in the womb, and contains 38 figures on 35 leaves illustrating various aspects of delivery and other facets of midwifery.         The great historical, geographical, genealogical and poetical dictionary; being a curious miscellany of sacred and prophane history. Containing, in short, the lives and most remarkable actions of the patriarchs, judges, and kings of the Jews; of the apostles, fathers, and doctors of the church; of popes, cardinals, bishops, &c. É Together with the establishment and progress both of religious and military orders, and the lives of their founders. As also, the fabulous history of the heathen gods and heroes. The description of empires, kingdoms, commonwealths, provinces, cities, towns, islands, mountains É The whole being full of remarks and curious enquiries, for the illustration of several difficulties in theology, history, chronology and ge

printed for Henry Rhodes; Thomas Newborough; the assigns of L. Meredith; and Elizabeth Harris, London 1701 - First edition in English of Moreri's great Le grand dictionaire historique, here styled the "second edition, revis'd, correct'd and enlarg'd to the year 1688," 4 vols. in 3, folio, engraved frontis portrait, title-pp. in red and black; text in double column; contemporary and probably original quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering direct on spines; joints cracked, cords holding; extremities rubbed and worn; rear cover of vol. I loose but present; mild dampstaining on last 20 leaves in bottom margin of vol. II, with resultant mildew; a venerable-looking set. Ebert 14387, citing Moreri: "A work esteemed notwithstanding its faults. The first edition appeared, Lyons, 1674. fol. in 1 vol. The work was gradually augmented by Parayre, the Abbe de St. Ussan, J. Le Clerc [as here], Vaultier, Dupin, Jac. Bernard, L. Fr. Jos. de la Barre, Pt. Rogues and Cl. Pt. Goujet. Concerning the different editions, see Marchand, Dictionn. II. 289." Circle of Knowledge #13, also citing Moreri: "The title does not convey the full import of Moreri's work, which contains also much geographical and biographical material. His book is arranged alphabetically, with articles on places, people, books, and general subjects intermixed. Encyclopaedias modeled on it were published in Germany, Switzerland, and England; Peter the Great is supposed to have commanded a Russian translation, and an Italian translation was projected." And Spanish edition appeared in Paris in the mid-18th century in volumes. Says DNB of Collier's contributions: "Although many of the original articles, especially those on church matters, are learned, the book as a whole did not satisfy the requirements of scholars, and was pronounced inaccurate [but] the labour of production must have been very great." Discussio criminationum, quibus usus est moscorum czarus, cum bello Svecis, contra jusjurandum, & nuperrime datam fidem, illato prætextum quæreret. Anno MDCC.

      - Stockholm, B. Nicolai Wankifwj. J. H. Werner. F., (1701). 4:o. 122 s. Veritas a calumnis vindicata, seu ex parte sacra regiae majestatis sveciæ justissimum responsum, quo nefandæ artes et calumniae regis Poloniae, quibus injustissimum, & divinis humanisque juribus maxime detestabile, bellum infucare nititur, et contra pacta conventa, praestitumque juramentum, reipublicae, cui praeest, libertatem si poterit, simul opprimere, manifestantur. Anno reparatæ per Christum salutis M DCC. (Stockholm, Kungl. tryckeriet, 1700.) 4:o. (8),+ 142,+ 38 s. Liten papperslagning s. 45-46, fläckar i sista paginerigsföljden. - vilken spreds framförallt i Holland.

Barcelona: Juan Pablo Marti for Francisco Barnola, 1701. Scarce first edition of this curious funeral fête for Carlos II, generally regarded by posterity as the most stupid and ineffective of the Hapsburg kings of Spain, whose reign (1665-1700) saw the utter dismemberment of the kingdom by Louis XIV. Needless to say, this is not how he is regarded in this account of the funeral proceedings by the Jesuit Rocaberti, which in addition to the standard description of the public ceremonies and the unusually large catafalque (pictured), contains one feature we have never encountered in a funeral publication: some of the orations, laments, hymns and other literary texts are arrayed in calligrams, labyrinths and other graphically striking configurations. For example, the text of a Latin distich Mors rapuit Carolum (“Death has snatched Charles”) has been scrambled in a diamond-shaped pattern. * Palau 271,658; De Backer Sommervogel VI.1928.1.. 4to. [19.8 x 14.5 cm], (12) ff., 272 pp., (14) ff., 8 folding plates (that of the catafalque oversized & signed Francisco Gazan after Jos. Vives), and 1 printed in red and black. Bound in contemporary flexible vellum, title stenciled on spine in a neat hand. Ownership inscription of Juan Ant. de Figueras on front end leaf; some foxing and small, light waterstain on title and in upper margin of scattered leaves; some repairs to blank upper margin of approximately 15 leaves. Otherwise good.

Cfr. Cordier, 880 (nota).
