Les Isles Britanniques, qui Contiennent les Royaumes d' Angleterre, Escosse, et Irande?

Copper engraved, double page, map, hand colored, cartouche uncolored, 49 x 59 cm (19 1/2" x 23"). Some minor soiling and aging; otherwise very good and quite colorful. Valk (1651-1726) was born in Amsterdam, and was also known as Valck. He was a fairly well known engraver and publisher, and would eventually go into partnership with Peter Schenk (1655-1718), and would produce an atlas and maps together. In fact, it seems they brought the property of the Blaeu firm, which gave them material for their maps. This is a very attractive map of Britain, and includes an inset of Orkney, Shetland and Faro islands. The map also contains a large cartouche that depicts angels and Poseidon. Bagrow p. 276.

Selecta Sacra. Libri Quinque. Cum Indicibus locupletissimis, & Tabulis Aeneis elegantissimis

Henricum Wetstenium Amsterdam Henricum Wetstenium 1700g Octavo. 53, [11], 805, [111]pp. Original blind stamped vellum with handwritten lettering on spine. Additional engraved title page. Title page in red and black lettering. Printer's device on title page. Remarkable work by Johannes Braun (1628-1708) the renowned professor of theology and Hebrew at the university of Groningen. A disciple of the Dutch Christian Hebraist Johannes Coccejus in theology, Braun adhered to Cartesianism in philosophical matters, publishing several scholarly, didactic and polemic works on the matter. He interacted with Descartes' chief intellectual heirs, Gottfried Leibniz and Benedict Spinoza. Braun corresponded was Leibniz. He knew at least some of Spinoza's works, and rejected the latter's alleged atheism. Braun exemplifies the early Conservative Enlightenment, which strove to integrate the new philosophy into a traditional orthodox theological structure. For him Cartesianism was a tool in a rationalist approach to theology and (particularly) in demarcating theology from philosophy. In this respect, his position is exemplary for the adaptations taking place in institutional philosophy around 1700. This book is profusely illustrated with 13 fine engravings (including 3 folding). Includes one plate showing the Molach. Spine and edges of binding darkened. Head of spine repaired. Front hinge starting. Minor browning and foxing along paper margin. Folding engraving facing page 225 repaired. Text in Latin with some Hebrew throughout. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+ condition.

Jacob Tonson London: Jacob Tonson. 1700. First. First edition. Folio. 646, [2] pp. Complete with the half-title leaf. 33.5 cm.         "Viaggio settentrionale Fatto, e Descritto Dal Molto Rev.do Sig.r D. Francesco Negri Da Ravenna..."

The complete book, 4to, 21,7x16,2cm Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title on spine XXX pp. (first four blank, 1 leaf (imprimatur "Noi Refformatori"), 208 pp., 4 leaves index, 1 engraved portrait of the author and 17 engraved folding plates. Padova 1700 Francesco Negri was an Italian clergyman who travelled in Scandinavia in 1664 - 65 and wrote many letters describing the native people of the North. He was also the first after Olaus Magnus to mention skiing. He first travelled through Sweden to Denmark where he met King Fredrik III, and then along the Norwegian coast from Bergen - Trondheim (including a visit to Østraat and Ove Bjelke) - Bjørnør - Næø - Torghatten - Rødø - Malstrømmen. As the first Italian he reached the North Cape, and in the North Cape Centre there is an exhibition vitrine displaying different scenes from F. Negri's visit. This book and travel account was based on his letters, and published by his heirs after his death. The content can be considered as a "scientific" document because it is intended to confute some legendary and fabulous statements by Olaus Magnus and give the reader a thorough and detailed description of places, people, human types, customs and habits. To accompany the text the book was illustrated with 17 folded plates (a small tear connected to a fold on two plates) from Lapland. The book stands as an important reference work of the North from the 17th/18th century. The book is divided in eight letters but useful information was added to the letters after Negri's return to Italy in 1666. Part one covers Lapland, part five, six and seven are describing his travel in Norway and the last is devoted to Finnmark and the North Cape. Francesco Negri's work has always been regarded as a rare book. Excellent, complete copies including the blank leaves and in contemporary vellum are a great rarity. A second edition, also very rare, was published in 1701. Provenance: Bookplate "Biondella Di Valpantena Verona, 44 eredi Tiepelo della Persia". E.H. Schiøtz "Utlendingers reiser I Norge" nr. 723b***, Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum "Voyage pittoresque - Reiseskildringer fra nord" Tromsø 2005, page 12 - 13 illustrated
