        Suite of Fanciful Costumes

1700. LARMESSIN II, Nicolas de. [Les Costumes grotesques et les métiers. Suite of Fanciful Costumes]. Comprised of 38 full-page engraved images set within borders, average image size: 270 x 190 mm (10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). Folio, 435 x 310 mm, bound in recent half French red morocco, gilt spine, marbled paper over boards. [Paris: ca. 1700]. |~||~||~||~||~| Very rare suite of this famous French seventeenth-century "Fancy Trade Costumes." Each plate is composed of a stylized character, usually itinerant workers, merchants or street vendors, in the manner of Arcimboldo. The figure is portrayed in the accoutrement of his particular trade or occupation, with the clothing, hats, etc. constructed out of the tools from his/her trade. For example, the gardener (Jardinier) has a floral and fruit composition for a hat, clay flower pots for forearms, fruits and/or flowers for legs, with hoes, rakes and a scythe over one shoulder and a watering can in the other hand; the clock maker/seller (d'orlogeur) is composed of an elegant Sevres-style clock as his chest, with chiming bells as a hat, wrist watches dangling from each arm and leg, and clock keys and winding devices hanging from his belt. There is a surrealistic quality to the figures as if they appear dressed to attend a Costume Ball at the Court of Louis XIV. Each character seems far removed from the grime of the work-place. It is often difficult to identify the individual accoutrements in the costumes of each figure. Although they would certainly have been commonplace objects of each trade in the seventeenth century, they now abide in an esoteric realm. Present-day art historians have made use of the Larmessin engravings for the study of hand-crafted objects during pre-factory production. This suite of 38 Larmessin engravings includes the following figures: Gardener (Jardinier), Money changer (Monnoyer), Miller (Meusnier), Maker of table games (Tabletier), Printer (Imprimeur), Fisherman (Pescheur), Blacksmith (Mareschal), Wine maker (Vigneron), Hat maker (Chapellier), Knife and Sissor Sharpener (Remouleur), Plumber (Plombier), Shoe maker (Sauetier), Basket maker (Vannier), Locksmith (Serrurier), Leather worker (Ceinturier), Wheel wright (Charron), Second-hand Clothes seller (Fripier), Dairy & cheese maker (Laitier), Brick Mason (Masson), Baker, (Boulanger), Butcher (Boucher), Farm laborer (Labourer), Wild Game chef/seller (Rotisseur), Saddle maker (Sellier), Furier (Foureur), Wine merchant (Cabaretier), Chest and Box maker (Malletier-Coffretier), Comb and brush seller (Peigné), Coffee merchant (Caffetier), Hosier (Bonnetier), Tailor (Tailleur), Plume and feather seller (Plumassier), Playing Card printer (Cartier), Physician (Médecin), Chef (Cuisinier), Comedian (Comédien), Perfume maker/seller (Parfumeur), and Clock maker (Orlogeur). The de Larmessin (also: L'Armessin) family was a famous French dynasty of engravers, printers, and booksellers active during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The series of prints from which these plates derive has been given various titles: Les costumes grotesques et les métiers, Costumes grotesques, or Habits des métiers et professions. Roger Armand Weigert in his article, "Sur les Larmessin et les costumes grotesques" in Nouvelles de l'Estampe, Paris, 1969, n°4 discusses the family at length and settles the attribution for the creation of these exceptional prints on Nicolas II. Nicolas de Larmessin II (1638-1694) was responsible for designing numerous engravings for books, calendars, almanacs, and various decorative prints. The Costumes grotesques have occasionally been attributed to Nicolas Larmessin III (1640 - 1725), and it is always possible that both of them worked on this extensive series of prints. This suite of 38 Larmessin Costumes grotesques are mainly without the background décor, indicating second issues. Colas # 1779 cites a total of 97 (?) engravings in the series. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France set has only 41 engraved plates and in their description cites that a total of 77 engravings comprise the full series by Larmessin. With overall strong impressions of the engraved images. Two unidentified watermarks are present: the imperial orb with crowned fleur-des-lys and the initials "G__P" or "G__B" set inside a perfect orb. Paper stock is certainly late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. These French costume engravings are very rare; they appear on the market infrequently as single sheets, but almost never as a suite of prints. Even a collection as important and formed as early (1896) as the Lipperheide collection could only acquire a suite of 38 plates. As mentioned above The Bibliothèque Nationale de France set has only 41 plates! There are a number of professional paper repairs to short tears at the extremities of many of the plates, the d'Orlogeur sheet with some extensive repairs at margins. A few sheets shorter in size. Overall in very nice condition. See: Lipperheide 1971 cites a date of 1695 & lists only 38 plates. Colas 1779 cites a date of 1690 and 97 (?) plates.

An essay upon the probable methods of making a people gainers in the balance of trade. Treating of these heads, viz. Of the people of England. Of the land of England, and its product. Of our payments to the publick, and in what manner our ballance of trade may be thereby affected. That a country cannot increase in wealth and power but by private men doing their duty to the publick, and but by a steady course of honesty and wisdom, in such as are trusted with the administration of affairs. By the author of The Essay on Ways and Means.> The second edition

London: James Knapton, 1700. 8vo., (16) + 204pp., with the 6 folding tables as called for, contemporary mottled calf with an old rebacking, small patches of surface wear to joints, later endpapers. A very good sound copy. Wing D.310. Kress 2216. Goldsmiths 3651. Mattioli 887. First published in 1699, this is perhaps Davenant's most coherent treatise on political arithmetic. His front-rank position in the history of economics is mainly based upon his insight into the importance of quantitative arguments, the use of political arithmetic, and his contributions to the theories of money, international trade and public finance. His failure to produce a coherent theoretical system is reflected by his flirtations with both mercantilism on the one hand and almost a free-trade position on the other. The present work includes much in the area of what might now be called 'applied' economics - population studies, marriage, immigration, family incomes, poverty, home consumption and so forth.
