        Bolivia

1700s - 1800s. The letters span from the 1700s to the 1800s and most are addressed to Francisco Ruiz De Sorzano, a very important man during the colonial period in the La Paz area of today Bolivia. He had important business relations with Peru, and was the owner of lands in what today is the border between Peru and Bolivia. He was also possibly a descendant of the King of Spain. The letters deal with commerce and various historical accounts. This collection is rife with untapped material and will be a true treasure to historians specializing in Bolivian culture. While many letters still have wax seal remnants, most do not have postal markings meaning they were undoubtedly hand carried in the 1700s. Sorzano's great great grandson, Jose Luis Tejada Sorzano, became President of Bolivia during the Chaco War. Sorzano was the Vice President at the time but was elected President after Daniel Salamanca Urey was forced to resign. The Chaco War was a costly conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay. Hostile incidents began as early as 1928 over the Chaco Boreal, a wilderness region of about 100,000 square miles (259,000 square km) north of the Pilcomayo River and west of the Paraguay River that forms part of the Gran Chaco. The conflict stemmed from the outcome of the War of the Pacific (1879-84), in which Chile defeated Bolivia and annexed that nation's entire coastal region. Thereafter, Bolivia attempted to break out of its landlocked situation through the Río de La Plata system to the Atlantic coast; athwart that route lay the Gran Chaco, which the Bolivians thought had large oil reserves. Paraguay formally declared war on May 10, 1933 launching a series of attacks along an extended front late in October and made such impressive gains that the Bolivian president Daniel Salamanca replaced Kundt with General Enrique Peñaranda. After Bolivian counterattacks put Paraguayan forces on the defensive, a truce was arranged on June 12, 1935. About 100,000 men lost their lives in the war. A peace treaty was arranged by the Chaco Peace Conference, which included Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States. It was signed in Buenos Aires on July 21, 1938. Paraguay gained clear title to most of the disputed region, but Bolivia was given a corridor to the Paraguay River and a port (Puerto Casado). The war had caused disruption of the Bolivian economy, provoking demands for reform among the deprived Bolivian masses. Argentina was given the main credit for the settlement, and Argentine investors profited greatly from Paraguay's territorial gain. Sorzano as president had a responsibility to bring an end to the disastrous Chaco War. By June 1935, a ceasefire was reached with Paraguay, however, the terms granted most of the Chaco Boreal region to Paraguay, reducing Bolivia's territory considerably. This earned Tejada the disdain of the military and he was removed from office in a coup d'etat led by generals José David Toro and Germán Busch a year later.

Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Nicolaes Visscher' after 'Pieter Schenk'. For nearly a century the members of the Visscher family were important art dealers and map publishers in Amsterdam. The founder of the business, C. J. Visscher, had premises near to those of Pieter van den Keere and Jodocus Hondius whose pupil he may have been. From about 1620 he designed a number of individual maps, including one of the British Isles, but his first atlas consisted of maps printed from plates bought from van den Keere and issued as they stood with some additions of his own, including historical scenes of battles and sieges for which he had a high reputation. Some maps bear the latinized form of the family name: Piscator. After Visscher's death his son and grandson, both of the same name, issued a considerable number of atlases, constantly revised and brought up to date but most of them lacking an index and with varying contents. The widow of Nicholaes Visscher II carried on the business until it finally passed into the hands of Pieter Schenk. Pieter Schenk / Petrus Schenck ( 1660-1718/19) was born in Germany, but settled in Amsterdam where he first became a pupil of Gerard Valck, the engraver. In 1687 he married Valck's sister and thereafter the Schenk and Valck families were active over a long period with a wide range of interests as print sellers, publishers of books, maps, topographical and architectural drawings and globes. Although they produced some original maps, most of their atlases consisted of printings from revised and re-worked plates originally by Jansson, the Visschers, the Sansons and others.         Rare Antique Print-BREDA-BRABANT-NETHERLANDS-Blaeu-de Wit-c.1700

      - Antique print, titled: 'Breda. ' - Plan of Breda. Cartouche and coat of arms. Scarse edition. De Wit used the plate made by Joan Blaeu, but had to add a new coat of arms at top rights, because the plate corner was broken off. Engraving on hand laid paper. Made by 'Frederick de Wit' after 'Joan Blaeu'. Frederik/Frederick de Wit (Amsterdam 1630-1706), was a famous engraver and publisher in Amsterdam. He acquired many of the printing plates of Blaeu and Janssonius when it came to auction. His map were very popular because of the quality of the engravings and the beautiful colouring. After his death his work was re-issued by Pieter Mortier and Covens & Mortier. Joan Blaeu (23 September 1596 - 28 May 1673) was a Dutch cartographer. He was born in Alkmaar, the son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1620 he became a doctor of law but he joined the work of his father. In 1635 they published the Atlas Novus (full title: Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus) in two volumes. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638. Joan became the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company. Around 1649 Joan Blaeu published a collection of Dutch city maps named Tooneel der Steeden (Views of Cities). In 1651 he was voted into the Amsterdam council. In 1654 Joan published the first atlas of Scotland, devised by Timothy Pont. In 1662 he reissued the atlas with 11 volumes, and one for oceans. It was also known as Atlas Maior. A cosmology was planned as their next project, but a fire destroyed the studio completely in 1672. Joan Blaeu died in Amsterdam the following year.         Antique Print-WORLD MAP-MERCATOR'S PROJECTION-Mortier-c. 1700

      - Antique print, titled: 'Carte Generale du Monde, ou Description du Monde Terrestre & Aquatique / Generale Waereld Kaart, of Beschryving van de Land en Water Waereld' - This is Pierre Mortier's world map drawn on Mercator's projection. It depicts California as an island and the Detroit d'Anian connected by dotted lines through a Northwest Passage to Button's Bay located to the west of Hudson Bay. There is an erroneous large lake shown as the source for the R. de Nort (Rio Grande River) located in the Southwest, as well as an early, open-ended version of the Great Lakes named Mer Douce. A small coastline of New Zealand appears in the Pacific. The northeast coast of Asia is severely truncated and shows Witsen's Cap de Glaces. Australia's northern coast is shown connected to New Guinea, and two disjointed coastlines appear to the south, including Van Diemen's Land. The most interesting features of the map are the five spheres presented along the top depicting day and night, the flood, the phases of the moon, and the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. The map was precisely engraved by Jan van Luchenburg (imprint at lower left). This is the first state with Mortier's imprint at bottom right. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Made by 'Pierre Mortier' after an anonymous artist. Made by 'Jan van Luchtenburg' after an anonymous artist. The 18th century Dutch map trade could build on their reputation that originated from the Golden Age much longer than was assumed until now. The Amsterdam publishing company Covens & Mortier (1685-1866) has played an important part in this process. Most likely this company was the largest map trader of his days. Thousand of maps were brought on the market by Covens & Mortier, often edited from earlier sources and all members of this firm were gifted with a great commercial talent. Pieter and David Mortier were booksellers in Paris and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter's death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes Covens and established the famous publishing house "Covens and Mortier" in Amsterdam. They have re-issued Atlases of Sanson, de l'Isle, Visscher and de Wit. Condition: Good, given age. Minor paper separation top edge, barely toucing image; repaired. A few light crinkles. A very rare survival in its original state as issued and now preserved in a new custom marbled clam-shell case ESTC r201488Wing E2704ADcf. Sweeney, 1789 (Dublin printing later in 1700)Collation: [A]² B-H² After the victory of 1690 William III had distributed amongst his supporters land seized from Jacobites, but English Parliament, to assert its authority over the Crown and to recoup some of the money it had expended in William's cause, wished to seize this land and sell it. A commission of seven was established to consider the matter. The objection among the many of Irish Protestant elite "to an English parliamentary inquiry was certainly associated with the controversy stirred up by Molyneux's famous treatise, The case of Ireland's being bound by acts of parliament in England stated, which had been published in the previous year and [which] had been greeted with enthusiasm in Ireland and indignation in England. The inquiry into the Irish forfeitures, and even more so [plans to reverse them] made clear how little respect the English parliament had for colonial assertions of constitutional independence. The theory that Ireland was subject to the king, but not to the parliament, of England was not easily reconciled with the new position brought about by the revolution of 1688, which established parliament, and not the king, as the ultimate authority in England ... When the commissioners reached Ireland they met a hostile reception from the Irish administration, who naturally sided with the king and resented an enquiry which was a direct attack both on the crown and on their own management of the forfeitures" [Simms].The commissioners soon split into two bitterly opposed factions, with the majority of four accusing the minority of three of, among other things, sympathy with papist claims. This published report which lists the properties to be forfeited is that of the majority and is signed by them. The memorial of the dissenting minority was presented to parliament (in manuscript) but not published. Vide: J. G. Simms The Williamite Confiscation in Ireland 1690-1703 (1956), p.96-109.
