Armao, pag. 132 Copper engraving, mm 395x515; uncommon and fine chart of the Balearic Islands and the contingous coast of Catalonia and Valencia. From "Prima parte dello specchio del mare", originally published in 1664 by Francesco Maria Levanto in Genova, one among the rarest works by Coronelli, who published, between end of the XVII and beginning of XVIII century, important works such as "Libro dei globi", "Atlante Veneto" and "Teatro della Guerra". Good example with some oxidation at centerfold, little worm track and holes in upper and bottom margin at centerfold. Armao, pag. 132

The present state of the Socinian controversy, and the doctrine of the Catholick fathers concerning a trinity in unity.

London: William Rogers 4to (20.5 cm, 8.1"). [12], 388 pp.. 1698 Sole pre-20th-century edition of this important entry in the first Socinian controversy in the Church of England, from a learned divine noted for his pugnaciousness in print. The author's earlier Vindication of the Doctrine of the Holy and Ever Blessed Trinity, intended as an attack on Socianism, had led to accusations of tritheism and heresy; here he defends more orthodox doctrine on the subject. The main text is in English, with extensive shouldernotes in Latin and Greek. Contemporary speckled calf, panelled with corner fleurons in blind, rebacked in similar calf, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled compartment decorations; sides acid-pitted, edges rubbed. All edges speckled red. Lower margin of title-page and lower (closed) edges institutionally rubber-stamped, no other markings. First few leaves foxed with scattered light spots elsewhere, last few signatures browned; one leaf with two small portions lost from outer margin; one outer corner torn away; one leaf torn across between header and text without any of this affecting text. A solid, tight, and dignified-looking copy.

It seems that when Ladmiral offered his services to the famous Albinus in Leiden, he presented this technique as entirely new and his own, without ever mentioning Le Blon. Ladmiral produced 6 such anatomical illustrations for 6 separate publications, later published under the joint title: Anatomische voorwerpen door Jan Ladmiral. With the initial integral blank leaf, often lacking. Letterpress leaves somewhat foxed and browned, but the illustration in very good condition.

Synopsis physica disputationibus aliquot academicis comprehensa.

Editio secunda cum figuris. Sthlm, 1698. 8:o. (12),84 s.

Venezia 1698 - Incisione in rame, mm 405x510, margini molto ampi. Armao, pag. 132

And, of course, the volume covers much about the administration of the order, the admission of novices, the pursuit and expression of spiritual life, etc. The work begins with the title-page printed in black and red in roman with some italic.

The first issue of the English translation, known as the "Bon issue," with plates and typography improved, after the original French edition published in Utrecht in 1697. No other narratives of French exploration in the interior of North America enjoyed as wide a popularity or stimulated as much controversy and criticism among later scholars as those of Hennepin. A Recollet missionary, Father Hennepin went to New France in 1675, and in 1678 he set out with La Salle to explore the fertile basin of the Mississippi River. While La Salle turned back to raise funds to continue the voyage, Hennepin went on to ascend the river from Fort Crevecoeur (Chicago) and penetrated farther northwest into the interior than any white man to that time. He discovered St. Anthony's Falls near the present site of Minneapolis, and provided the first eyewitness account of Niagara Falls. The engraving of the Falls which appears in his narrative, although an imaginative rendering, was the earliest to be published. Hennepin was subsequently captured by the Sioux, and after several months of wandering, he was rescued by Daniel De Lhut. This edition contains translations of both Hennepin's second and third books, NOUVELLE DECOUVERTE... and NOUVEAU VOYAGE.... The first presents a fairly reliable account of Hennepin's actual travels and experiences, but also incorporates his entirely false claim to have descended the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. This is, in fact, Father Zenobe Membre's account, which Hennepin boldly plagiarized from Le Clercq's ETABLISSEMENT DE LA FOY. In his sequel, NOUVEAU VOYAGE, Hennepin added new material drawn from contemporary sources on Indian manners and customs and various North American travels. The first eight chapters describe the adventures and murder of La Salle, while the last concern the British treatment of the Recollets after the taking of Quebec in 1629. Despite the fact that Hennepin has been severely and justly criticized for imposture and plagiarism, his works, according to Thwaites, still stand as "invaluable contributions to the sources of American history; they deserve study, and to this day furnish rare entertainment. We can pardon much to our erratic friar, when he leaves to us such monuments as these." The maps are of great importance for the cartography of the Midwest. JCB (2)II:1535. WING H1450. SABIN 31371. Signed by ""John March."" Judge Saltonstall continues, ""This was put in August 8.98 as a Demur on Plea of title to ye land, before me N: Saltonstall J.P….""John March was a taverne keeper in Newbury as well as a Major in the militia. Early in the summer of 1691, a small force under the command of then Capt. John March, of Newbury, and Capt. Daniel King, of Salem, was sent to look after the Indians, who had become troublesome in the vicinity of York and Wells, on the coast about 30 miles north in the Massachusetts Bay province of Maine. Caleb Moody, a maltster who most probably dealt with March in business, was a member of Capt. John March's force. In 1668, Nathaniel Saltonstall (1639-1707) began his career in town affairs when he was appointed town clerk. According to Robert Moody in The Saltontstall Papers, according to a single surviving record book, he was ""firm and effective in law enforcement, and yet, where allowed discretion by law, humane and flexible."" He also served as Justice of the Peace and was a member of the local militia rising to the rank of Colonel. He took an active part in deposing Governor Edmund Andros who had been appointed Governor of the new Dominion of New England formed by King James II in 1686. When Governor Andros took power, Saltonstall quit as a representative in the General Court because he refused to serve in Andros' government. The Dominion combined all New England colonies into a single unit. After James II was deposed in the 1688 Glorious Revolution, Saltonstall and other major political leaders Andros and other English authorities arrested in April 1689. The Province of Massachusetts Bay was chartered on October 7, 1691, by joint monarchs William and Mary and took effect on May 14, 1692. Two weeks later, on May 27, 1692, the Court of Oyer and Terminer was established to try witchcraft cases. Its members were Lieutenant Governor William Stoughton, Nathaniel Saltonstall, Bartholomew Gedney, Peter Sergeant, Samuel Sewall, Wait Still Winthrop, John Richards, John Hathorne, and Jonathan Corwin.Signed material from any of the Salem Witch Trial judges is seldom encountered, with most of the jurists virtually impossible to obtain as only a scant few examples have reached the market in the past fifty years. This is a well-preserved, legible example. In 2011, a one page, 4.5"" x 8.25"" Autograph Document Signed once by Nathaniel Saltonstall and with a much less desirable 18th century date sold at public auction for over $3200. "
