Les Malades de Belle Humeur ou Lettres Divertissantes ecrites de Chaudray

12mo [15.9 x 8.9 cm], (6) ff., 424 (i.e. 432) pp., with an added folding plate [26.1 x 26.1 cm]. Bound in contemporary French mottled calf, covers triple gilt ruled, spine in six compartments, red morocco title label, marbled end papers and marbled edges, engraved ex-libris of Maurice Villaret on front-end paste down. Covers and corners somewhat rubbed. Some leaves toned, an occasional spot in margin, otherwise very good. Very rare second edition (first in 1697) of an enigmatic and ingenious literary satire devoted to the medical practice of Dr. Christophe Ozanne (1633-1713), an unlicensed rural physician from the French hamlet of Chaudray. The present volume contains a very rare, separately issued engraving depicting Ozanne consulting with patients in his modest rooms, providing a fascinating glimpse into the practice of empiric medicine in 17th-century France. Les Malades de Belle Humeur ou Lettres Divertissantes ecrites de Chaudray, the work of the dramaturge and theologian L’abbé Laurent de Bordelon (1653-1730), ranges wildly in genre and subject matter, containing elements of the epistolary novel, poetry, fictitious dialogue, art criticism, medicinal theory, and digests of classical literary works, and even prints genuine letters exchanged by two important female writers of 17th-centruy France, the famed female novelist Madeleine de Scudéry (1607-1701) and the poet Catherine Descartes (1637-1706), niece of the René. The publication of such bizarrerie during the Golden Age of French Baroque Literature – a period during which L’Académie française and the salons of Paris championed the classical ideals of rigidly self-contained and well-defined genres – is truly peculiar and offers a fascinating point of departure for further literary-historical research. Les Malades de Belle Humeur opens with a (real or imagined) description of the author’s convalescence in the care of Ozanne, including a discussion of the doctor’s home, his patients, and his remedies. The large, separately issued folding plate depicts (with no apparent humor) Dr. Ozanne in his chambers distributing ‘curative waters’ to a queue of eager patients. Such detailed depictions of medical practice are of interest in their own right and are fairly uncommon. As we have located the plate in no other copy of the work, and it is almost certainly the ad hoc addition of an early owner (see Notice sur Christophe Ozanne, pp. 44-5).Bordelon’s initial narrative is quickly is overtaken by the literary ephemera that makes this volume such a puzzle, not only for the heterogenous nature of its contents, but also the level of critical intelligence, which ranges from the banal to the sophisticated. We find poetry, a list of mirabilia, elementary plot summaries of Virgil and Homer, a well-informed critical appraisal of Italian vs. French music, dialogues between fictitious characters, etc. Yet the most significant of Bordelon’s digressions is not fictitious at all: the 20-page excerpt of actual correspondence between Madeleine de Scudéry and Catherine Descartes, which includes a poem by Scudéry that appears here in print for the first time. A monograph comparing the letters in the present volume to a verified manuscript of the correspondence confirms that they are genuine. The Paris chaplain Abbé de Bordelon (1653-1730), far from a fringe figure, enjoyed considerable celebrity during his lifetime, publishing dozens of works on a variety of topics, including astrology, drama, morality, philosophy, biography and mock biography, and witchcraft. His works, including a twelve-volume collected works, were frequently reprinted in France and the Netherlands, and were also translated into English, German, Italian, and Spanish.OCLC locates U.S. copies of this 1698 edition at Newberry and San Francisco; Penn and the Library of Congress house copies of the 1697 edition. The added engraving found in the present volume is untraced in public institutions.* Not in Cioranescu. He was admitted as a licentiate on 22 December 1696. … In the end Colbatch gained a social reputation as a good physician”, and died an affluent man.

With title-page printed in red and black with an engraved printer's device and 3 engraved plates (2 folding, 1 double page). Contemporary vellum.

      - Nijhoff & V. Hattum 126; STCN (5 copies). First and only edition of a Dutch poem in praise of Chateau Agimont or Neercanne on the Dutch-Belgian border near Maastricht, and in praise of other attractions in the vicinity, by François Halma. It starts with a six-page verse dedication to Daniel Wolf, Baron van Dopff, who had the chateau built in 1698, followed by an acknowledgement in verse to the Maastricht city officials, and a four-page note to the reader. The double-page plates show the chateau and estate itself with elaborate gardens (and a ship sailing in the artificial lake), a view of the city of Maastricht, and the great stone-vaulted interior of the St. Pietersberg mine south of Maastricht. The chateau and probably the other illustrations were drawn by Guillaume de Bruyn (1649-1719) and engraved by J. Karrewyn. On its publication in 1715, Halma's book received an enthusiastic 19-page report in Boekzaal der geleerde wereld, which gave particular attention to the typography. With the bookplate and library stamps. Endleaves waterstained, browned throughout with some occasional spots and stains. Otherwise a good copy.

        Q. Sectani Satyrae in Phylodemum. Cum notis variorum.

Köln (Coloniae), Apud J. Selliba, 1698. 8vo. 164,(1),(1 blank) p. Vellum 15 cm Among the best ever written by a modern Latinist (Ref: VD17 14:702097T; Sandys 2,281; IJsewijn, Companion, 1,64; cf. Willems 2170; Brunet 5,256; Graesse 6,338; Ebert 20778) (Details: This edition of the satyres of Sectanus was issued with 2 different titles; the title most found is: 'Satyrae, XIX, in Phylodemum, cum notis variorum'. The content is exactly the same, apart from the title. The title without 'cum notis variorum' seems rare. The publisher probably decided, having printed a number of copies, that the book would sell better with the addition 'cum notis variorum'. The imprint on the title is according to VD17 probably false; The book was probably printed in Lucca) (Condition: Vellum soiled. Head of the spine damaged. Both inner hinges strenghened with a strip of brown paper. Front endpapers inscribed and with owner's inscriptions. Name on the title. The blank upper margin of ca. 30 pages has been repaired with a small piece of paper to hide a worm hole, which sometimes nibbles at a letter, or some letters of the highest line. The blank right upper corner of the last leaves torn off, and also repaired with a strip of brown paper. Small wormhole in the lower margin of the last 45 pages, sometimes nibbling at a letter) (Note: The Venetian nobleman Lodovico Sergardi, 1660-1726, published in 1696 a 'series of Latin satires against an enemy, which were wholly within the tradition of Horace and Juvenal. He even signed himself Quintus Sectanus, Quintus, the fifth after Lucilius, Horace, Persius and Juvenal'. (G. Highet, 'Juvenal the Satirist, a study', Oxf., 1962, p. 217) A second edition, augmented with 3 satires appeared 2 years later in 1698. Highet's explanation of the first name of Sergardi's pseudonym Quintus Sectanus seems far fetched. It seems more obvious that Sectanus is derived from 'sectari', to follow, pursue. This book is the result of a quarrel between the first members of the newly established 'Academia Arcadum', in Italian 'Accademia degli Arcadi', which was founded in Rome in 1690. The quarrel was between Sergardi and the lawyer and cofounder of the Academia Gianvincenzo Gravina. The aim of the members was to rescue Italian literature from manierism and to return to simplicity and the beauty of classic poetry. 'Among the Latin poems written by its members one finds both very good work and the deadliest dullness. Lodovico Sergardi/Q. Sectanus' satires (...) are rightly considered to be among the best ever written by a modern Latinist'. (IJsewijn, 'Companion to Neo-Latin studies', vol. 1, Leuven, 1990, p. 64) (Provenance: On the title: 'Ex libris Dom. Xavier'. On the front flyleaf an inscription: 'Ex libris valde Honorabii (sic!) Domini Joannis Frere Angli quem ille dignatus est in donum accipere ab addictissimo suo Comite Xaverio Marchese Melitensi, anno salutis 1824'. This book was a gift of Count Saverio Marchese, 1757-1833, who enjoyed great respect as a connoisseur of Maltese culture. His expertise extended over a number of fields, among them poetry, history, archaeology, the Maltese language and especially the arts and local art history. After the French had lost Malta to Great Britain in 1800, Malta was made a British Dominion. Marchese 'adapted effortlessly into the British environment under the new government. In 1823, he was elected to the University Committee responsible for examining the University?s performance and progress. In his collection of poems, there are a number of sonnets praising British Governors (...). Marchese was also favourable of British preferences in art and architecture. (...) His talents and social merits were appreciated by both the Grand Masters and the British Governors, who elected him to high social positions and invited him personally to important events and celebrations at the Palace on numerous occasions'. (See ((http))//mhs.eu.pn/hw/hw200903.((html)), on which address is also to be found a specimen of his handwriting, which matches the inscription in this book). Marchese wrote on the verso of the flyleaf a short summary of the book. § This book was given by the count to the English author and retired diplomat John Frere Hookham, 1769-1846, who served as ambassador in Spain and Prussia. In 1820, on account of the failing health of his wife, 'he went with her to Malta, where he lived for the rest of his life. In retirement, he devoted himself to literature, studied his favourite Greek authors, and taught himself Hebrew and Maltese. He welcomed English guests, was popular with his Maltese neighbours, and befriended Mikiel Anton Vassalli, the first Professor of Maltese at the University of Malta'. (Quote from Wikipedia, s.v. John Hookham Frere) § This book was at some time brought to Great Britain. Three English owner's entries have been inscribed on the front pastedown. 1, 'Fredk York Powell,1898'. The English historian Frederick York Powell, 1850-1904, wrote articles for the Dictionary of National Biography, and the Encyclopedia Britannica, and some books on folklore. (See http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:Frederick_York_Powell, including a portrait) 2, 'Arthur Quiller Couch', 1919'. 'Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, 1863-1944, was a British writer who published under the pen name of Q. Although a prolific novelist, he is primarily remembered for the monumental Oxford Book Of English Verse 1250-1900 (later extended to 1918) and for his literary criticism. He guided the taste of many who never met him, including American writer Helene Hanff, author of '84, Charing Cross Road'. (See Quiller's lemma in Wikipedia). 3, 'Giles Dugdale to Patrick Duff, 1945'. Giles Dugdale was an English local historian. Dugdale?s admiration of the Dorset dialect poet William Barnes resulted in a biography of Barnes, published in 1953, 2 years before his death, securing the legacy of both the subject and his biographer. Dugdale?s other interests included art, architecture and archaeology, and he was an important member of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society. (See https://dorsetcountymuseum.wordpress.com/category/writers/page/3/ with his portrait). Dugdale gave this copy of 'Sectani Satyrae' to Patrick Duff; he also dedicated his biography of Barnes to the same Patrick Duff. This is probably Sir Charles Patrick Duff, 1889-1972, knight and public servant, who served as an officer during the First World War, later he was private secretary to Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin) (Collation: A-K8, chi4, (minus blank leaf chi4) (Photographs on request)

        Alcorani textus universus.

Padua: Typographia Seminarii,, 1698. Ex correctioribus Arabum exemplaribus summa fide, atque pulcherrimis characteribus descriptus, Eademque fide, ac pari diligentia ex Arabico idiomate in Latinum translatus; Apposititis unicuique capiti notis, atque refutatione: His omnibus praemissus est Prodromus Totum priorem Tomum imples, In quo contenta indicantur pagina sequenti. 2 volumes in one, folio in sixes (346 x 225 mm). Contemporary vellum, sometime rebacked and relined, raised bands, compartments lettered in gilt, sides decoratively panel-stamped in blind, red sprinkled edges. Woodcut head- and tailpieces, figurative initials. Complete with all sectional title pages and the 2 leaves of errata to the rear. Book label ("HB") and detailed pencilled collation to front pastedown. Vellum faintly soiled, short superficial splits to head of front joint and foot of rear, old thumb-tags to fore edge of section-titles in the Prodromus and to title of the Refutatio Alcorani, minute hole intermittently appearing in fore margins (probably from the papermaker's mould), the text never affected, sporadic pale foxing to margins, the occasional minor spot or mark. Prodromus: title and sig. A1 browned and marginally restored, contemporary inked marginalia to pp. 38-9, small hole to Pars tertia sig. A2 costing one word on the recto. Refutatio Alcorani: old pencilled marginalia to pp. 7, 84 & 87, contemporary inked marginalia to pp. 22, 83 & 352, sigs. A3-B1 damp-stained, pale tide-mark occasionally appearing in upper outer corners, spreading in final few leaves, closed tear to lower outer corner of sig. 2D3, the text spared. A very good copy, tall, crisp and imposing, with deep impressions of the Arabic types, and of the appealing woodcuts. First edition of Marracci's Qur'an, "the greatest pre-modern European work of Qur'anic scholarship" (Burman). The second volume, entitled Refutatio Alcorani, comprises the second obtainable edition of the original Arabic, alongside a Latin translation considered "by far and away the best translation of the Qur'an to date" (Hamilton), and an analysis and refutation of each surah, and is preceded by the second edition of Marracci's extensive prefatory work, the Prodromus ad Refutationem Alcorani, which was first published in 1691 and includes a life of Muhammad. The first Arabic edition of the Qur'an was printed in Venice circa 1530 and survives in a single copy: it is thought the entire print-run was ordered to be destroyed. In 1694 the second Arabic edition was published by Abraham Hinckelmann, a Lutheran pastor in Hamburg, though lacked a translation or any form of commentary beyond the introduction. Marracci's efforts were intended to compete with such Lutheran interpretations and formed "part of a vast war effort ? with the aim of restoring the intellectual and theological glory of the Church of Rome and the memory of the Vatican as Europe's foremost centre of Oriental studies" (Elmarsafy, The Enlightenment Qur'an, online). "Marracci, an Italian priest of the order of the Chierici regolari della Madre di Dio who was also professor of Arabic at La Sapienza as well as confessor to Pope Innocent XI, divided the text of the Qur'an into manageable sections which he presented to his readers first in carefully vocalized Arabic, and then in his new Latin translation, followed by a series of notae that address lexical, grammatical and interpretive [sic] problems. Like most other Latin Qur'an translators, Marracci often includes material drawn directly from Muslim commentators? but his careful notes generally also supply far more explanatory material ? By virtue of its extensive notes on the text throughout, Marracci's enormous edition provided his European readers with the Qur'an accompanied ? by much of its traditional Sunni interpretation" (Burman). A cache of manuscripts unearthed in the library of his order in 2012 has since verified his claim to have translated the Qur'an four times before committing it to print. The result was a landmark of Arabic scholarship which finally ended the dominance of Robert of Ketton's twelfth-century Latin translation. It was translated into German in 1703 and formed the basis of George Sale's influential English edition of 1734.

[Heinrich Ludwig Muoss], 1698 [?but 1770]., Zug, - A patriotic map of Switzerland Hand-coloured engraved map, 52 views of Swiss cities pasted to borders. A fascinating item showing a patriotic view of Swiss heritage in the dying years of the Old Confederacy. Little is known of the mapmaker, Johann Georg Bodenehr (1631-1704), save that he was from a family of engravers and publishers working in Augsburg. The map itself bears an elaborate title cartouche with a wreath incorporating the arms of the cantons, supported by personifications of war and peace. The inscription underneath is taken from Luke 11:21: ?ÄúCum fortis armatus custodit atrium suum, in pace sunt ea quae possidet?Äù, or ?ÄúWhen a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace?Äù. To the upper left is a table providing information on each canton, with a key below. To the right of the cartouche is a cameo of William Tell, the fourteenth century Swiss folk hero, with four scenes from his life. From left to right, the pictures show the famous incident in which he was challenged to shoot an apple off the head of his son with a crossbow by a despotic local ruler; his subsequent imprisonment and escape; his assassination of that ruler with the same crossbow; and finally, his acclaim by his countrymen. The large border surrounding the map contains 52 views of Swiss towns and villages. There are two depictions of climactic battles in the history of the Swiss Confederacy: the Battle of Morgarten in 1315, in which the Swiss defeated a larger and better organised Habsburg army; and the Battle of Sempach in 1386, which broke Austria?Äôs hold on Swiss territory permanently and which is seen as a milestone in the formation of the Swiss nation. The Battle of Sempach inspired so many commemorative songs that there is a whole genre in Swiss music called Sempacherlied. The achievements of these battles are represented at the centre of the lower border: the Swiss system of government, comprising the federal diet at the top, at which each of the cantons were represented, and a local council shown underneath. The Swiss cantons formed a confederation during the fourteenth century, and successfully fended off invasion while maintaining neutrality during the long wars which racked Europe. Towards the end of the seventeenth century, however, a treaty of protection with France and internal religious conflict weakened the confederacy, and this pattern continued until it was eventually invaded by Napoleon in 1798. The map itself was issued around 1698, but the border of views was added in a later edition printed around 1770.This implies that the original map, already patriotically decorated, was reissued with a border which showed further evocative incidents of national pride. The warning inscription beneath the title cartouche suggests an attempt to remind the warring cantons of their shared history, and their rapidly decreasing independence.OCLC only records one institutional example of this edition of the map in Basel University Library, although Zurich and Bern University Libraries have copies of the c.1698 edition. 540 by 760mm (21.25 by 30 inches). [including border] 870 by 1030mm (34.25 by 40.5 inches).

Historische Erzählungen die Denkungsart u. Sitten der Alten zu entdecken..

Kl-8, Titetblattkupfer, XXIV, 262 S., Kart d. Zeit m handschriftl. Rückenschild, Berieben, kleine Fehlstelle des Ueberzugpapiers a. Rücken. Eckausschnitt a. fliegendem Vorsatz, hinterlegter Schnitt auf Titellblatt, wenig stockfleckig. Erste Auflage. In ihren theoret.

Gilding slightly rubbed, else fine. The Royal House of Morvi represents the senior male line of the Royal Houses of Cutch. The state came into being when Kanyoji, the son Kumar Shri Ravoji, the Heir Apparent of Cutch, fled with his mother after his father's murder in 1698. He escaped from Bhuj and took immediate possession of Morvi and Kuttaria in Wagad. From that date, Morvi has remained an independent Jadeja principality. A gifted administrator who modernised his state, introduced the first telephonic communications, a system of district tramways, built roads, schools and reservoirs, improved the city with bridges, public buildings and amenities, and banned money lenders in favour of state loans. He improved the old port of Vavania, enabling it to take ocean-going vessels, and constructed a modern industrial port at Naulakha. Both helped to stimulate trade, especially the local textile and salt industries. His tireless efforts were rewarded were recognised when Morvi was raised to the status of a first class state in 1887. The Thakore Sahib reigned for fifty-two years and died in 1922. - A magnificent dedication album with views of various buildings, street scenes, landscape, etc. - All over condition is excellent.

1698 Oracle of Sibyls Fortune Telling Prophecy Numerology Occult Pagan Mysticism

A Paris, chez Michel Brunet, grande salle du Palais, au Mercure galant. M. DC. XCVIII. Avec privilege du Roy. [1698] - 1698 Oracle of Sibyls Fortune Telling Prophecy Numerology Occult Pagan Mysticism An incredible 17th-century edition of Claude Comiers Oracles of Sibyls and fortune-telling – an incredible occult and esoteric book on great men, demy-gods, and explanations of the supernatural. The Sibyls were oracular women believed to possess prophetic powers in ancient Greece. The earliest Sibyls, ‘who admittedly are known only through legend,’ prophesied at certain holy sites, under the divine influence of a deity, originally—at Delphi and Pessinos—one of the chthonic deities. Later in antiquity, a number of sibyls are attested in various writers, in Greece and Italy, but also in the Levant and Asia Minor.
