        DISCOURSES CONCERNING GOVERNMENT

London: Printed, and to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1698. First Edition. From the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: "Polemically a refutation of Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha (1680) [in which Filmer argued for the divine right of kings], the practical purpose of the Discourses is ... to argue for armed resistance to oppression". Almost certainly Sidney's most significant work, the Discourses Concerning Government has been called "the textbook of the American revolution" [see Caroline Robbins, "Algernon Sidney's Discourses Concerning Government: Textbook of Revolution," William and Mary Quarterly, 1947, 3rd Series 4:266]. Jefferson had a copy of the 1763 edition in his library [Sowerby III, 12]. In response to a truly fawning letter from Mason Locke Weems ["your Excellency's Wisdom, Humanity, and Rank, have made you as a Sun in our land"] Jefferson replied in kind: "...you ask my opinion on the subject of publishing the works of Algernon Sidney...the world has so long and so generally sounded the praises of his Discourses on government, that it seems surperfluous, and even presumptuous, for an individual to add his feeble breath to the gale. they are in truth a rich treasure of republican principles, supported by copious & cogent arguments, and adorned with the finest flowers of science." The writing of this work cost Sidney his head [Sowerby III, 13]. The First Edition, in contemporary speckled calf with some minor surface loss from some ancient varmint. There is an old name inked through on the title page. Front hinge reinforced, old patches to the spine extremities, and an armorial bookplate for William Weld, Oxon on the pastedown. (ODNB; Wing S3761; ESTC R11837; Sowerby III, 12, 13).

        Two Treatises of Government:

London: printed for Awnsham and John Churchill,, 1698. In the Former, the False Principles and Foundation of Sir Robert Filmer, And His Followers, Are Detected and Overthrown. The Latter is an Essay Concerning The True and Original, Extent, and End of Civil-Government. Octavo (192 x 120 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, red morocco label to spine, compartments ruled in gilt, boards ruled in gilt and decorated in blind, sprinkled edges. Ownership inscription, "John James Case" of Guernsey, dated October 1811 to front free endpaper, repeated ownership signature at foot of title. Joints and spine ends skilfully restored, short tear to foot of front endpaper repaired; a crisp, clean copy in an attractive contemporary binding. Third edition of Locke's revolutionary work of political philosophy, first published anonymously in October 1689. The extended refutation of Filmer's divine right theory in the first treatise and Locke's positive theory of government set out in the second make up one of the most famous and influential works in the history of liberalism. Although the preface states that the works were conceived as a vindication of the Glorious Revolution of 1688-9, which had "saved the Nation when it was on the very brink of Slavery and Ruine", it is believed that Locke composed them over a far greater period of time, beginning no earlier than the publication of Filmer's Patriarcha (1679-80). The second edition, prompted by Locke's dissatisfaction regarding the printing quality of the first, appeared five years later, and this third and final edition is "substantially a line-for-line reprint" of the 1694 text with a few alterations. Despite Locke's good relationship with the printers Awknsham and Churchill, he struggled to adequately convey his emendations because he was "so determined to conceal his identity that he conducted all the business relating to the edition indirectly, through Edward Clarke" (ODNB). The Two Treatises exerted a profound influence on American thought and on Jefferson in particular. The first American edition, which printed only the second treatise, was published in Boston in 1773 and became a frequent reference point for the discontented American colonies in the lead up to the American revolution. Locke's belief that a government's main duty was the preservation of life, liberty and property, and that liberty was a natural right that men brought with them from a state of nature into civil society, was adopted by Jefferson in his drafting of the Declaration of Independence. Three years after the American edition of the Two Treatises appeared, Jefferson altered Locke's statement on the right to life, liberty and property to the now iconic phrase "the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".

Historische Erzählungen die Denkungsart u. Sitten der Alten zu entdecken..

Kl-8, Titetblattkupfer, XXIV, 262 S., Kart d. Zeit m handschriftl. Rückenschild, Berieben, kleine Fehlstelle des Ueberzugpapiers a. Rücken. Eckausschnitt a. fliegendem Vorsatz, hinterlegter Schnitt auf Titellblatt, wenig stockfleckig. Erste Auflage. In ihren theoret.

Jacques Galliard (v. 1) & George Gallet (v. 2), Cologne / Amsterdam 1698 - 8vo: [xiv], 366, [x]; 427, [xiii] pp. 1698 (v.2) - 1702 (v.2). Full leather. Contemporary full calf with five raised bands and gilt decoration and titling to the spine. Gilt ruled board edges and turn-ins (volume 1 only). A composite set comprising two different editions. While the title of volume 1 states 'Seconde Edition', it is really the third edition. The second volume is first edition. An etching/engraving illustrates the start of each story. According to the title page a 'free translation, accommodated to the taste of the time. The first volume claims the illustrations were engraved by various engravers. The illustrations in the second volume were etched by De Hooghe himself. Giovanni Boccaccio (Certaldo or Florence, 1313 – 1375, Certaldo) was a Florentine poet, author and humanist. Romeyn de Hooghe (bapt. 1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was born in Amsterdam. He was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. The Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren (1735) was a well known emblem book and sourcebook for classical mythology and its iconography. According to Houbraken he was particularly good at inventive arrangements of subjects in engravings. Condition: Good, given age. Hinges split but the boards attached. Board edges quite worn, spines cracked but intact. One quire in the middle nearly detached. Seccond volume dampstained. Flyleaves of the first volume separated.         Les Remarques Sçavantes et curieuses d'un homme du monde, sur plusieurs sujets differens.

"A Paris: chez Jacques Langlois Imprimeur Ordinaire du Roy, 1698". 8vo (160 x 100 mm). [2] leaves, 261, [2] pp. 23 lines and headlines, in a neat cursive hand: the manuscript imitates a printed text, including a title-page with imprint, signatures, catchwords, running heads, shoulder notes, and a pen-and-ink "head-piece." Worm damage affecting text near gutters in pp. 179-182. Nineteenth-century red morocco gilt, sides with triple fillet borders, spine densely gold-tooled, gilt edges, by Lortic, according to a pencil inscription on flyleaf. Provenance: the first page is inscribed at top "A. V. Couche"; Paul Desq, bookplate, sale 1866, lot 906; Gustave Mouravit, inkstamp, sale 1938, lot 94.*** A manuscript imitating a printed book, complete with half-title, title with imprint, signatures, head-lines, shoulder-notes, printer's permission dated 20 August 1696, and an achevé d'imprimer, dated 8 October 1698. No edition of that date is recorded, but the text was published under a similar title (Remarques sçavantes et curieuses sur divers sujets) in 1702, by T. Guillain in Paris (accompanying a separately paginated French translation of Giovanni Battista Gherardini's Relation d'un voyage de la Chine). The present manuscript matches that 1702 edition page for page, suggesting that the latter may have been a reprint of a now lost edition of 1698. True to the title, the text provides a smorgasbord of curiosities, from black magic to the origins of history to ethnographic snippets, and long lists of the nobility of various countries. This kind of miscellaneous magazine-like text was a precursor of newspapers, and of the entertaining mélanges of the French court almanacs that became popular forty or fifty years later.

      - Cobres 310; Dejager 252; Mennessier de la Lance II, 429; Nissen, ZBI 3418; for the Adalbert von Lanna collection: Lugt I, pp. 516 ff. (no. 2773). Rare first edition, in German and French, of a great coloured print series, with a 39-page letterpress text, showing horses in a wide variety of colours and patterns by Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), a German painter, graphic artist and engraver of animals, most famous for his horses: "one of the most beautiful illustrated animal books of the 18th century . lavishly illustrated and also very rare" (Dejager). Together with the book we offer Ridinger's fine original pen and ink, ink wash and chalk drawing for the second plate. While many books or print series on horses show them standing or occasionally running in a race, most portraits in the present series show them much more naturally: stamping or pawing the ground, rearing up, jumping, kicking, sitting and rolling on the ground. When they do stand still they are often turning their heads. With significant tears in 2 plates, unobtrusively repaired without loss, but otherwise in good condition, with minor, mostly marginal repairs, small smudges or stains, or minor browned patches in a few other plates. The drawing has a minor crease in the paper, affecting only the background, but is otherwise in fine condition, with only a couple minor marginal defects, not approaching the drawn image. A beautiful and charming horse book, essential to any collection, with the original drawing for one of the plates in fine condition.
