Historische Erzählungen die Denkungsart u. Sitten der Alten zu entdecken..

Kl-8, Titetblattkupfer, XXIV, 262 S., Kart d. Zeit m handschriftl. Rückenschild, Berieben, kleine Fehlstelle des Ueberzugpapiers a. Rücken. Eckausschnitt a. fliegendem Vorsatz, hinterlegter Schnitt auf Titellblatt, wenig stockfleckig. Erste Auflage. In ihren theoret.

Jacques Galliard (v. 1) & George Gallet (v. 2), Cologne / Amsterdam 1698 - 8vo: [xiv], 366, [x]; 427, [xiii] pp. 1698 (v.2) - 1702 (v.2). Full leather. Contemporary full calf with five raised bands and gilt decoration and titling to the spine. Gilt ruled board edges and turn-ins (volume 1 only). A composite set comprising two different editions. While the title of volume 1 states 'Seconde Edition', it is really the third edition. The second volume is first edition. An etching/engraving illustrates the start of each story. According to the title page a 'free translation, accommodated to the taste of the time. The first volume claims the illustrations were engraved by various engravers. The illustrations in the second volume were etched by De Hooghe himself. Giovanni Boccaccio (Certaldo or Florence, 1313 – 1375, Certaldo) was a Florentine poet, author and humanist. Romeyn de Hooghe (bapt. 1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was born in Amsterdam. He was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. The Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren (1735) was a well known emblem book and sourcebook for classical mythology and its iconography. According to Houbraken he was particularly good at inventive arrangements of subjects in engravings. Condition: Good, given age. Hinges split but the boards attached. Board edges quite worn, spines cracked but intact. One quire in the middle nearly detached. Seccond volume dampstained. Flyleaves of the first volume separated.

[2] leaves, 261, [2] pp. 23 lines and headlines, in a neat cursive hand: the manuscript imitates a printed text, including a title-page with imprint, signatures, catchwords, running heads, shoulder notes, and a pen-and-ink "head-piece." Worm damage affecting text near gutters in pp. 179-182. Nineteenth-century red morocco gilt, sides with triple fillet borders, spine densely gold-tooled, gilt edges, by Lortic, according to a pencil inscription on flyleaf. Provenance: the first page is inscribed at top "A. V. Couche"; Paul Desq, bookplate, sale 1866, lot 906; Gustave Mouravit, inkstamp, sale 1938, lot 94.*** A manuscript imitating a printed book, complete with half-title, title with imprint, signatures, head-lines, shoulder-notes, printer's permission dated 20 August 1696, and an achevé d'imprimer, dated 8 October 1698. No edition of that date is recorded, but the text was published under a similar title (Remarques sçavantes et curieuses sur divers sujets) in 1702, by T. Guillain in Paris (accompanying a separately paginated French translation of Giovanni Battista Gherardini's Relation d'un voyage de la Chine). The present manuscript matches that 1702 edition page for page, suggesting that the latter may have been a reprint of a now lost edition of 1698. True to the title, the text provides a smorgasbord of curiosities, from black magic to the origins of history to ethnographic snippets, and long lists of the nobility of various countries. This kind of miscellaneous magazine-like text was a precursor of newspapers, and of the entertaining mélanges of the French court almanacs that became popular forty or fifty years later.

      - Cobres 310; Dejager 252; Mennessier de la Lance II, 429; Nissen, ZBI 3418; for the Adalbert von Lanna collection: Lugt I, pp. 516 ff. (no. 2773). Rare first edition, in German and French, of a great coloured print series, with a 39-page letterpress text, showing horses in a wide variety of colours and patterns by Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), a German painter, graphic artist and engraver of animals, most famous for his horses: "one of the most beautiful illustrated animal books of the 18th century . lavishly illustrated and also very rare" (Dejager). Together with the book we offer Ridinger's fine original pen and ink, ink wash and chalk drawing for the second plate. While many books or print series on horses show them standing or occasionally running in a race, most portraits in the present series show them much more naturally: stamping or pawing the ground, rearing up, jumping, kicking, sitting and rolling on the ground. When they do stand still they are often turning their heads. With significant tears in 2 plates, unobtrusively repaired without loss, but otherwise in good condition, with minor, mostly marginal repairs, small smudges or stains, or minor browned patches in a few other plates. The drawing has a minor crease in the paper, affecting only the background, but is otherwise in fine condition, with only a couple minor marginal defects, not approaching the drawn image. A beautiful and charming horse book, essential to any collection, with the original drawing for one of the plates in fine condition.

Auflage von 1698]. *** Hirsch, Bd. I, S. 383 ff. *** Lorenzo Bellini (1643 Florenz -1704 ebd.) J.Bleker, Gesch. Nierenkrankheiten, 53,56,61,62,79 - "Bellini realized the value of the urine as an aid to diagnosis and insisted on its chemical analysis in pathological conditions". Garrison & Morton 4162 (EA 1683). *** Gutes Exemplar mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren, Text fast fleckenfrei, Einband minimal berieben bzw. beschabt, Vorsatzblatt mit kleinem Randausschnitt. Aussengelenk fachmännisch restauriert.

Les Malades de Belle Humeur ou Lettres Divertissantes ecrites de Chaudray

12mo [15.9 x 8.9 cm], (6) ff., 424 (i.e. 432) pp., with an added folding plate [26.1 x 26.1 cm]. Bound in contemporary French mottled calf, covers triple gilt ruled, spine in six compartments, red morocco title label, marbled end papers and marbled edges, engraved ex-libris of Maurice Villaret on front-end paste down. Covers and corners somewhat rubbed. Some leaves toned, an occasional spot in margin, otherwise very good. Very rare second edition (first in 1697) of an enigmatic and ingenious literary satire devoted to the medical practice of Dr. Christophe Ozanne (1633-1713), an unlicensed rural physician from the French hamlet of Chaudray. The present volume contains a very rare, separately issued engraving depicting Ozanne consulting with patients in his modest rooms, providing a fascinating glimpse into the practice of empiric medicine in 17th-century France. Les Malades de Belle Humeur ou Lettres Divertissantes ecrites de Chaudray, the work of the dramaturge and theologian L’abbé Laurent de Bordelon (1653-1730), ranges wildly in genre and subject matter, containing elements of the epistolary novel, poetry, fictitious dialogue, art criticism, medicinal theory, and digests of classical literary works, and even prints genuine letters exchanged by two important female writers of 17th-centruy France, the famed female novelist Madeleine de Scudéry (1607-1701) and the poet Catherine Descartes (1637-1706), niece of the René. The publication of such bizarrerie during the Golden Age of French Baroque Literature – a period during which L’Académie française and the salons of Paris championed the classical ideals of rigidly self-contained and well-defined genres – is truly peculiar and offers a fascinating point of departure for further literary-historical research. Les Malades de Belle Humeur opens with a (real or imagined) description of the author’s convalescence in the care of Ozanne, including a discussion of the doctor’s home, his patients, and his remedies. The large, separately issued folding plate depicts (with no apparent humor) Dr. Ozanne in his chambers distributing ‘curative waters’ to a queue of eager patients. Such detailed depictions of medical practice are of interest in their own right and are fairly uncommon. As we have located the plate in no other copy of the work, and it is almost certainly the ad hoc addition of an early owner (see Notice sur Christophe Ozanne, pp. 44-5).Bordelon’s initial narrative is quickly is overtaken by the literary ephemera that makes this volume such a puzzle, not only for the heterogenous nature of its contents, but also the level of critical intelligence, which ranges from the banal to the sophisticated. We find poetry, a list of mirabilia, elementary plot summaries of Virgil and Homer, a well-informed critical appraisal of Italian vs. French music, dialogues between fictitious characters, etc. Yet the most significant of Bordelon’s digressions is not fictitious at all: the 20-page excerpt of actual correspondence between Madeleine de Scudéry and Catherine Descartes, which includes a poem by Scudéry that appears here in print for the first time. A monograph comparing the letters in the present volume to a verified manuscript of the correspondence confirms that they are genuine. The Paris chaplain Abbé de Bordelon (1653-1730), far from a fringe figure, enjoyed considerable celebrity during his lifetime, publishing dozens of works on a variety of topics, including astrology, drama, morality, philosophy, biography and mock biography, and witchcraft. His works, including a twelve-volume collected works, were frequently reprinted in France and the Netherlands, and were also translated into English, German, Italian, and Spanish.OCLC locates U.S. copies of this 1698 edition at Newberry and San Francisco; Penn and the Library of Congress house copies of the 1697 edition. The added engraving found in the present volume is untraced in public institutions.* Not in Cioranescu. He was admitted as a licentiate on 22 December 1696. … In the end Colbatch gained a social reputation as a good physician”, and died an affluent man.

With title-page printed in red and black with an engraved printer's device and 3 engraved plates (2 folding, 1 double page). Contemporary vellum.

      - Nijhoff & V. Hattum 126; STCN (5 copies). First and only edition of a Dutch poem in praise of Chateau Agimont or Neercanne on the Dutch-Belgian border near Maastricht, and in praise of other attractions in the vicinity, by François Halma. It starts with a six-page verse dedication to Daniel Wolf, Baron van Dopff, who had the chateau built in 1698, followed by an acknowledgement in verse to the Maastricht city officials, and a four-page note to the reader. The double-page plates show the chateau and estate itself with elaborate gardens (and a ship sailing in the artificial lake), a view of the city of Maastricht, and the great stone-vaulted interior of the St. Pietersberg mine south of Maastricht. The chateau and probably the other illustrations were drawn by Guillaume de Bruyn (1649-1719) and engraved by J. Karrewyn. On its publication in 1715, Halma's book received an enthusiastic 19-page report in Boekzaal der geleerde wereld, which gave particular attention to the typography. With the bookplate and library stamps. Endleaves waterstained, browned throughout with some occasional spots and stains. Otherwise a good copy.
