Istoria delle guerre del Regno del Brasilie accadute tra la corona di Portogallo, e la republica di Olanda

First edition, first issue. A landmark Braziliana, and one of the most lavishly-produced works written on Brazil in the 17th century; the illustration is remarkable, as it is beautiful: it comprises an engraved allegorical title, engraved portraits of Pedro II and Joao IV in each volume (both by Benedictus Frajat after the famous Roman artist Antonio Horacio Andreas), and 23 folding splendid engraved maps by Vincent and Fressa after the designs of Andreas, featuring dominating cartouches and breathtaking cartographic renderings of Brazil. The maps are beautifully drawn and engraved, each with an elaborate cartouche featuring putti and the royal coat of arms of Portugal, which is reasonable, considering the work celebrates the Portuguese victory over the Dutch for the control of Brazil, and the considerable support the King gave Santa Teresa for its production; each map shows a different region, and provides details of the location of missions, towns and fortifications, evidencing an access to updated cartographic sources of information. The relevance of Santa Teresa´s work has not gone un-noticed, and is usually referred to, as a cornerstone piece for any library with an interest in Brazil or general Americana "is one of the most sumptuous works published in the seventeenth century on a Brazilian subject It received a five thousand cruzados subsidy from Pedros II and the most famous engravers of the period executed the engravings" (Borba de Moraes). Furthermore, the considerable number of maps that illustrate it, makes it an invaluable source for the history of cartographic knowledge of Brazil. Santa Teresa (1658 - 1733) was a Portuguese Carmelite Priest and historian. This is the real first edition; a reprint was issued in 1700 with a new title page, often referred to as a first edition too. Very rare, only one copy of this book has come up at auction since 1998.         El Nuevo Apostol de Galicia, religioso Capuchino, y Misionario Apostolico en la America, y Europa

First edition. Carabantes (1628 - 1694) was one of the first Capuchin missionaries in America; although his name was Velazquez, he changed his name for that of his hometown in 1645, when entering the order. In 1657, he arrived in the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), from there he went on to Caracas and Cumana, where he was able to evangelize the Caribes, a tribe notorious for its cruelty and ferocity. As often, the missionary learned the natives tongue and wrote subsequently a vocabulary for the missionaries. His stay in the region lasted for 9 years, after which he had to travel back to Spain to defend his fellow missionaries; after that, he planned to return to the Americas, but his superiors decided to keep him in Spain, where death found him short after. It is attributed to him the conversion of five "caciques" (denomination for the chiefs of the tribes). It is with little doubt one of the few, and more primitive, sources of information extant on several Provinces of Venezuela and local tribes amongst them, the Caribes, Cuacas, Tapies, etc. A copy of the "Copia de Carta escrita al Excelentissimo Señor Marques de Aytona" published in 1666 and written by Carabantes, is only registered as having appeared for sale by Maggs in the 20´s; no auction record is found for this work. Sabin, 67345.

        Discourses concerning Government.

London: Printed, and are to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster,, 1698. Published from an Original Manuscript of the Author. Folio (314 x 187 mm). Contemporary calf, raised bands to spine, panelled boards decoratively stamped in blind, edges speckled red. Contemporary ownership inscription, "Arundell Wastfeild", to front endpaper, a few neat pencil annotations to contents. Joints, edges, and corners skilfully repaired, contents evenly browned, leaves Ll2-3 heavily so, chip to head of front free endpaper and short tear to upper margin of leaf Z2, otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this major text of republican theory written between 1681 and 1683 and originally circulated as a manuscript. "Although long and sometimes repetitive the Discourses places Sidney alongside Milton as the master of republican eloquence. It is the power of its prose, as much as any aspect of its content, which helps to account for the work's exceptional subsequent impact in Britain, continental Europe, and America. Polemically a refutation of Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha (1680), the practical purpose of the Discourses is again to argue for armed resistance to oppression ... for subsequent influence in Enlightenment Britain, America, the United Provinces, Germany, and France, he had no seventeenth-century rival except John Locke" (ODNB). "Sidney was executed in 1683 for complicity in the Rye House Plot, his papers, including the [unpublished] Discourses, being used against him. The indictment cited sentences saying that the king is subject to law, is responsible to the people, and may be deposed, as a 'false, seditious, and traitorous libel'… Sidney's Discourses Concerning Government was not published until 1698" (Sabine, 512). Thomas Jefferson was one of many influenced by Sidney's ideas. In 1804, he wrote of the Discourses: "They are in truth a rich treasure of republican principles, supported by copious & cogent arguments, and adorned with the finest flowers of science. It is probably the best elementary book of the principles of government… which has ever been published in any language" (Sowerby III: J6). "Jefferson identified Sidney as one of four writers who provided the intellectual foundations of the Declaration of Independence" (A Covenanted People, 56).

NOUVEAU VOYAGE D'UN PAIS PLUS GRAND QUE L'EUROPE AVEC LES REFLECTIONES DES ENTERPRISES DU SIEUR DE LA SALLE, SUR LES MINES DE ST BARBE, &c

Utrecht, 1698. [70],389pp. plus folding map and four folding plates. 12mo. Handsome tan crushed morocco, gilt extra, leather spine labels, marbled endpapers, a.e.g., by Lucien Broca. A few tiny marginal paper repairs. Otherwise, internally clean. Near fine. First edition. This edition of Hennepin's writings is a continuation of his NOUVELLE DECOUVERTE... of the previous year. In this work he added new material drawn from contemporary sources on Indian manners and customs and various North American travels. The first eight chapters describe the adventures and murder of La Salle, while the last concern the British treatment of the Recollets after the taking of Quebec in 1629. Lengthy passages are taken from Le Clercq's ETABLISSEMENT DE LA FOY of 1688. Despite the fact that Hennepin has been severely and justly criticized for imposture and plagiarism, his works, according to Thwaites, still stand as "invaluable contributions to the sources of American history; they deserve study, and to this day furnish rare entertainment. We can pardon much to our erratic friar, when he leaves to us such monuments as these." No other narratives of French exploration in the interior of North America enjoyed as wide a popularity or stimulated as much controversy and criticism among later scholars as those of Hennepin. A Recollet missionary, Father Hennepin went to New France in 1675, and in 1678 he set out with La Salle to explore the fertile basin of the Mississippi River. While La Salle turned back to raise funds to continue the voyage, Hennepin went on to ascend the river from Fort Crevecoeur (Chicago) and penetrated farther northwest into the interior than any white man to that time. He discovered St. Anthony's Falls near the present site of Minneapolis, and provided the first eyewitness account of Niagara Falls. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 698/101. ARENTS 432. CHURCH 774n. HARRISSE 177.         DISCOURSES CONCERNING GOVERNMENT

London: Printed, and to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1698. First Edition. From the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: "Polemically a refutation of Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha (1680) [in which Filmer argued for the divine right of kings], the practical purpose of the Discourses is ... to argue for armed resistance to oppression". Almost certainly Sidney's most significant work, the Discourses Concerning Government has been called "the textbook of the American revolution" [see Caroline Robbins, "Algernon Sidney's Discourses Concerning Government: Textbook of Revolution," William and Mary Quarterly, 1947, 3rd Series 4:266]. Jefferson had a copy of the 1763 edition in his library [Sowerby III, 12]. In response to a truly fawning letter from Mason Locke Weems ["your Excellency's Wisdom, Humanity, and Rank, have made you as a Sun in our land"] Jefferson replied in kind: "...you ask my opinion on the subject of publishing the works of Algernon Sidney...the world has so long and so generally sounded the praises of his Discourses on government, that it seems surperfluous, and even presumptuous, for an individual to add his feeble breath to the gale. they are in truth a rich treasure of republican principles, supported by copious & cogent arguments, and adorned with the finest flowers of science." The writing of this work cost Sidney his head [Sowerby III, 13]. The First Edition, in contemporary speckled calf with some minor surface loss from some ancient varmint. There is an old name inked through on the title page. Front hinge reinforced, old patches to the spine extremities, and an armorial bookplate for William Weld, Oxon on the pastedown. (ODNB; Wing S3761; ESTC R11837; Sowerby III, 12, 13).

        Florus Danicus.

With large folding engraved portrait of the author and verses by Paul Vinding, and numerous engraved intials. Except from minor weak browning an unusually clean and well-preserved copy on strong paper from the Corselitze Estate. Birkelund 70. Bibl. Danica III, 14. Thesaurus 374.
