. . Brunet 10370; Poggendorff II, 1092; Lipperheide Thb 2. - Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

Der hochwichtige Articul Von der Wiedergeburt / Dero Ursachen / Mittel / Art / Pflichten / Würden / Kennzeichen und übrigen dahin gehörigen Materien / auß unterschiedlichen Texten Heil. Schrifft In LXVI. Wochen-Predigten Der Christlichen Gemeinde zu S. Nicolai in Berlin / Durch GOttes Gnade vorgetragen / und Auff Christlicher Freunde Ansuchen zum Druck gegeben.

Franckfurt am Mayn, In verlegung Johann David Zunners / Im Jahr Christi 1696.. 4°. Titelblatt in schwarz-rotem Druck, (10), 1052 [richtig 1060], (4) Seiten. Pergamentband der Zeit mit durchgezogenen Bünden.. VD17, 1:020995K. - Grünberg 63. - Bircher C2483. Jahrhunderts. - Selten, zumal in diesem guten Zustand. - Contemporary vellum slightely stained and rubbed, a little browned throughout. Over all a good and clean copy of the very scarce first edition, of great importance for the development of protestant spirituality and the growth of the evangelical movements until today.

Relations de divers Voyages Curieux, Qui níont point estÈ publiÈes

Paris,: Thomas Moette, 1696.. Five parts in two volumes, folio; altogether around 1500 pp.; with 15 folding maps and charts, including large folding maps of Australia, China, the Pacific, with the Philippines and Japan, and the map of Edso, North Japan (which is often lacking), full-page portrait, four full and ten folding or double-page engraved plates of costumes, plants, animals, alphabets etc., 46 full-page woodcut plates of Mexican inscriptions and pictograms, a woodcut, 12 engravings and several tables in the text; contemporary French mottled calf, sides bordered in gilt, spines (sympathetically rebacked) gilt in compartments between raised bands, red morocco labels; an attractive and fresh copy. The great travel collection, including Tasman and Pelsaert. This is an excellent copy of the rare, best and first complete edition of one of the most important of all travel collections, lavishly illustrated, and especially significant for the first appearance of numerous descriptions of the Pacific, the Far East, Australia and the Philippines. This was the first major work on Australia and the Pacific to receive a wide European readership. It includes a significant reference to early Chinese visits to the "Terre Australe" long before the arrival of Europeans (preface, 'Avis sur le dessein, & sur l'ordre de ce recueil', ?3v):'Le Terre Australe... a estÈ dÈcouverte ? plusieurs fois... Les Chinois en ont eu connoissance il y a long-temps; car l'on void que Marco-Polo marque deux grandes Iles au Sud-Est de Iava, ce qu'il avoit appris apparemment des Chinois...'.Sets of the work, containing all five parts, and particularly all of the required maps, are of great rarity. When complete, as is this excellent copy, the geographical scope of the collection is nearly universal, taking in the Americas, China, Japan, Siam, the Philippines, Mongolia, India, Tartary, Egypt, Persia, Arabia, Asia Minor and Russia. Virtually all the component parts are enriched by illustration, the choice of material sometimes unpredictable and quite idiosyncratic: it ranges from detailed charts of coastlines suitable for navigational purposes, and a number of cartographically important maps, to depictions of botanical specimens, exotic cultural practices and writing systems. The range and quirky variety makes this one of the visual feasts of travel literature.MelchisÈdech ThÈvenot (ca. 1620-92) "as custodian of the Royal Library from 1684 to his death... was in a particularly advantageous position to review the latest travel literature, and to have it translated and published by the royal printers. The Relations is rich in illustrations and maps reproduced or adapted from the Dutch, Latin, English, and Iberian originals. It also includes translations from a few Persian, Arabic, and other Oriental sources preserved in the libraries of Ley den and the Vatican and in private collections" (Donald Lach, Asia in the Making of Europe, III.1.410-11).ThÈvenot's collection includes Pelsaert's account of his discovery of Australia, documenting the experiences of the earliest European settlers on the continent and describing the Aboriginal people for the first time. Pelsaert recounts details of the wreck of the Batavia and his subsequent struggle with a mutinous crew. Accompanying the Pelsaert account is the rare and famous map of Abel Tasman's discoveries, 'one of the earliest charts devoted entirely to Australia and the first French map of the continent' (Davidson). The first published result of Tasman's great voyages, it was ThÈvenot's map which gave the world the first clear idea of the shape and location of the new fifth continent. The Tasman map appeared in at least four different states: in this copy it is in its third state, with corrections, and with the addition of the Tropic of Capricorn and rhumb lines. This is an earlier version than the fourth and final state more often seen in copies of the 1696 edition. This set also includes the two-part map of Northern Japan which is almost always missing."A majority of ThÈvenot's relations pertain to the countries, peoples, and natural world of Asia, for he aimed quite openly to provide the French with the latest and best materials on navigation, trade, and life in the East. In addition to voyages previously published elsewhere, the Relations includes in Volume I an extract from a journal prepared in connection with the Dutch embassy to China in 1655-57, an account of the Dutch loss of Formosa in 1663, and a part of Aleixo da Motta's rutter of the East Indies translated from a Portuguese manuscript. Of particular importance for Sumatra is the memoir of General Augustin de Beaulieu on his East Indian voyage of 1620-22, contained in Volume II. This is followed by a series of accounts and maps relating to the Philippines and other islands such as Yezo (Hokkaido), as well as a map of the Indian Ocean prepared in 1649 by Jo·o Teixeira, the royal cosmographer at Lisbon. ThÈvenot translated materials on China and its flora by the Jesuit Michael Boym, which appear at the end of Volume II. Volume III begins with Johann Nieuhof's account of the Dutch embassy of 1655 to China; it includes a number of spectacular engravings and a map of the route followed by the Dutch from Canton to Peking. Small amounts of fresh information on China's neighbours appear in Volume III, especially on the Mongol language. Volume II of the later editions includes what may well be the Decas secunda of Martino Martini's synopsis of China's dynastic history to the year A.D. 1666 as well as a Manchu vocabulary and a small Chinese grammar..." (Lach, op. cit.).ThÈvenot's work has one of the most complicated publication histories, since it was published over the course of more than thirty years, and a comparison of copies, even in contemporary bindings like that offered here, inevitably demonstrates some variation in organization and contents. A very full collation of this complete copy has been prepared and is available on request.Bagnall, 5521; Bremer sale, 864; Church, 672 (4 parts only); Cordier, Bibliotheca Sinica, III, 1944; Davidson Sale, 20; Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', pp. 28-9; Hocken, pp.2-4; JCB (1675-1700), pp. 335-341; Lach, 'Asia in the Making of Europe', III.3.1512-13 & especially 1519-20; Lowendahl, 'China Illustrata Nova', 217; Lust, 'Western Books on China', 260; Tooley, 23.25 and plate XI.

White Hall / S. Pauls Cathedral

Venice, c. 1696. Copper engraving, 43 x 27 cms, black and white, restoration to elaborate border dividing the two images (3 x 0.4 cms hole neatly closed), blank verso; from 'Isolario dell'Atlante Veneto', perhaps the last of the great Italian ‘island books’. If Coronelli’s St Paul’s differs somewhat from the cathedral we know, it’s worth bearing in mind that Wren’s building only came into use in 1697 and was officially completed in 1708.

A New Voyage to the East-Indies in the Year 1690 and 1691

London: Daniel Dring,, 1696. Being a full Description of the Isles of Maldives, Cocos, Andamans, and the Isle of Ascension; and all the Forts and Garrisons now in possession of the French, with an Account of the Customs, Manners, and Habits of the Indians. By Monsieur Duquesne. To which is added, A New Description of the Canary Islands, Cape Verd, Senegal and Gambia &c. … Done into English from the Paris Edition. Octavo (164 × 104 mm) Contemporary sprinkled sheep, unlettered, double blind rules. 2 folding maps, and 5 engraved plates. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked and with some skillful restoration to the corners, light browning, slight stain to the fore-edge which does not carry to the margins, a very good copy. First editions in English. The first part is a translation of Pouchot de Chantassin's Relation du Voyage et Retour des Indes Orientales pendant les Années 1690 & 1691. Par un Garde de la Marine Servant sur le Bord de Monsieur Duquesne (Paris, 1692). His name is not given in this translation, but appears in the privilege to the French edition. "The author was employed in French factory posts set up in India, and travelled amongst the India Ocean Islands" (NMM). Pouchot's account of the fight "with fourteen Dutch and English ships" at Fort St. George (pp. 96–105) is contested by Dampier in A New Voyage, explaining that he feels obliged to relate the story (which was given to him by "the Gunner's Mate of Capt. Heath's Ship, a very sensible Man") because "there is such a plausible Story made of it in Captain Duquesne's Late Voyage to the East-Indies" (I, p. 522). Dampier describes a rather inconclusive and desultory engagement, with the Dutch and English "fleet" being an accidental gathering of heavily laden and under-armed merchantmen, rather than the well-organized force under two admirals portrayed in the French account published here. The second part is a translation of Le Maire's Les voyages du Sieur Le Maire aux îles Canaries, Cap-Verd, Sénégal et Gambie sous Monsieur Dancourt (1695). Le Maire was a surgeon with the Compagnie d'Afrique; his well-observed narrative contains probably the first account of the Canary Islands written by a visitor, and perhaps more importantly his work remains an key source for the study of 17th-century West Africa, interactions between Africans and Europeans, and aspects of the slave trade.

AN EXEMPLIFICATION OF RECOVERY OF LAND IN WALES

29 March, 1696. A Vast, Visually Dramatic William III Document, With Original Pendant Seal in Pristine Condition. 495 x 705 mm (19 1/2 x 27 3/4"). 19 lines in a professional scribe's notarial hand. UPPER LEFT CORNER WITH A VERY LARGE ENGRAVED PORTRAIT OF THE KING (measuring approximately 240 x 220 mm., including its calligraphic surround), the first words of the document ("Gulielmus Tertius Dei") in large, bold, calligraphic letters across the full length of the document, and WITH A LOVELY SWIRLING ENGRAVED INHABITED ACANTHUS BORDER IN THE TOP MARGIN, incorporating a pheasant, a rampant lion, an eagle, a stork, and a unicorn. WITH THE LARGE ROYAL SEAL, measuring slightly more than 100 mm. in diameter, on its vellum thong at the bottom, the seal ENCASED IN ITS ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPPER (now adhering to the wax and fitting around its contours). The border decoration at the top and the final word of the first line of text trimmed off at the right (though the rest of the text intact), a bit of abrasion along folds and four small holes where folds intersect, very slight soiling, otherwise IN FINE CONDITION, the engraved decoration and written text rich and clear, the vellum bright and fresh, and the seal perfectly preserved. This superb royal document is an exemplification of recovery, a document used in the transfer of title to land. A "common recovery" was in essence a fake lawsuit in which all parties colluded to break entails, those conditions or stipulations that restricted the inheritance or transfer of a particular piece of land to certain individuals. The judgment of the court (usually the Court of Common Pleas) could be used to transfer the property as the parties wished. The exemplification, always a very attractive document featuring a portait of the monarch and the Great Seal, was an official copy of the court record that could be used to prove the title to the land. Until the mid-18th century, these documents were written in Latin using an archaic, and almost indecipherable, court hand. This exemplification concerns the recovery of lands in Beguildy, a small village seven miles northwest of Knighton in Radnorshire, South Wales; the principals involved are Hugh Lewis, Michael Taylor, and Morgan Vaughan. In addition to the Great Seal, our document sports a blue paper seal with an embossed version of the royal seal, most likely a revenue stamp denoting fees paid when the property was transferred. Because the paper wrapping around the royal seal now takes the shape of the contours of the impressions in the wax, we can see that the recto depicts a rampant lion and unicorn flanking a shield, with a crown above and a stylized "W" beneath, and the verso shows the monarch seated on a prancing horse, with the "W" floating behind his back. This appears to be the second seal of the king, used after Mary II died in 1694. It is difficult to find any large antiquarian royal wax seal in fine condition, and to encounter it, as here, encased in its original wrapper, is extraordinarily lucky.

Le Nouveau Testament en Francois, avec des Reflexions Morales. In four volumes

05 - Paris - Andre Pralard, 1696 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete and full leather set of this late seventeenth and early eighteenth-century New Testament in French. New Edition. Rather scarce in any condition and particularly pleasing to see in the original binding. 'Le Nouveau Testament en Francois, avec des reflexions morales sur chaque verset, pour en rendre la lecture plus utile, & la meditation plus aisee (nouvelle edition augmente, imprime par L'ordre de Monseigneur L'Evesque et Comte de Chaalons, Pair de France)'. 'The New Testament in French, with moral reflections on each verse, to make the reading more useful, & meditation easier (new expanded edition, printed by order of Bishop L' Evesque and Count of Chaalons, Peer of France)'. Volume I features an engraved frontispiece. Withvignettes to the titlepages and headpieces to several pages. With the armorial bookplate of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana to the front pastedowns of Volumes II-IV. The Bibliotheca Lindesiana noble library is distinguished not only because of the remarkable collection formed, but because its dispersal began ninety-five years ago and it no longer exists. The library's origins may be said to go back to the late sixteenth century with the establishment of the Lindsay family at Balcarres in Fife by Lord Menmuir, whose bibliophilic son David, the first Lord Balcarres, augmented it to a position of distinction among Scottish libraries. Complete in four volumes. Condition: In full speckled calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Several joints starting but firm. Some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Some scattered light foxing. Red wax marks to the front endpapers of Volume I which has caused the front free endpaper to partially stick to the front pastedown. Ink signatures to front free endpapers of Volume II and IV, and first blank of Volume III. Overall: GOOD..

Paris: Alexis Hubert Jaillot, 1696. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gold embellishments, in excellent condition. 24 3/8 x 37 ¼ inches. A highly decorative map of Normandy by Alexis Jaillot, an exceptional example with gilt embellishments One of the most important figures in French cartography, Nicolas Sanson initiated the great school of French geographers. Born in Abbeville in 1600, Sanson established his first printing house in Paris in 1638. He soon became geographer to the king, establishing himself as one of the most influential cartographers on the Continent. He was succeeded by his sons, Adrien, and Guillaume, and by his son in law Pierre Duval, who continued to publish a wealth of maps using Sanson's name. At the close of the seventeenth century, Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot, who continued to publish his maps and atlases under Sanson's title. This stunning map of Normandy is based on Sanson's map published in 1650, but was redrawn and enlarged by Jaillot. It shows the provinces of Normandy as well as the northern tip of Brittany and part of the English Channel. Both Jersey and Guernsey are included as is Mont St. Michel off the coast of St. Malo. In keeping with all of Sanson's and Jaillot's superb maps, forests, rivers, and towns are meticulously identified and named. The map includes an ornate cartouche in the upper section as well as a scale and key. Tooley, Maps & Map-Makers, pp. 40-41.
