Dimensioni 1130x835. Once he had realized his project to renovate and enlarge Rome, Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi) charged quite a few topographers and agronomists to realize the Roman countryiside land registry, putting the Jesuit Francesco Eschinardi in charge of the cartographic part. The best maps have been drawn by Giovan Battista Cingolati and Ameti, who realized two big size maps of the Northern and Southern neighbourhood of Rome. As Almagià points out, the two maps could be joined to form just one print, since they share a part where the river Tiber and Rome are depicted. This work is basically after Innocenzo Mattei's (1626-79), a Camaldolese monk, who was official geographer of Clemente X and realized his work in 1666. When compared to Mattei's Tavola esatta dell'antico Latio e Nova Campagna di Roma, Ameti's work shows many analogies in different fields: classical references, the names of the streets, etc. It differs from its sources on the addiction of new places, especially along the coasts. The first map (St. Peter's Heritage) presents a big cartouche on upper left, with the date, 1691, and the printer's name, Domenico de Rossi, together with dedication to the Cardinal Francesco Nerli. The description of the territory is quite detailed, with wods, heights, the small towns and the lakes of Bolsena, Bracciano and Orbetello. The map of Latium, dedicated to the Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, has been printed three years before and presents a better relief of the Pontine marshes, and even the hydrography is quite different. Ameti's map have been included, together with Mattei's, in the second edition of De Rossi's Mercurio Geografico. Copperplates, realized in four plates each, joined together in the past, with the technique of etching. Example in excellent condition, trimmed to platemark; sings of glue along the old folds. Roma Rome Istituto di Studi Romani, a cura di A. Frutaz, "Le Carte del Lazio", XXXIII, tav. 174

Lilli Gregori Gyraldi Opera Omnia duobus tomis distincta [Johannes Jens, ed.]

Jacob Hackius, Cornelius Boutesteyn, Johannes Du Vivie, Pieter and Johannes Vander Aa, and Jordan Luchtmans, Leiden 1696 - Folio (376 x 245). 2 works in one volume, each with separate title-page. Text in the original Latin, with some use of Greek and Hebrew types. Pagination: [10] ff., 676 cols., [2] ff., 685-772 cols., [13] ff., (Index); [2] ff., 928 cols., 1 p. (numbered "929"). Collation: *7 **2 ***1 A-Lll4; [pi]2 A-Qqq4. COMPLETE. With an allegorical frontispiece + 9 engraved plates (of which 2 are double-page and folding). Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf (worn along extremities), sympathetically rebacked with new spine in the style of the period, corners renewed, original pastedowns and endleaves preserved. Early blind-stamps of the now-defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on first two and final two leaves. Minor even browning. THE FINEST EDITION of the works of Giraldi, Renaissance Italian poet and classical scholar; this imposing folio volume was finely printed and illustrated with engraved plates of high quality by Jan van den Aveelen after drawings by F. Boitard. Giraldi (1479-1552) was a man of great erudition. His 'Historia de diis gentium' was the first systematic study of Greek and Roman mythology, and his 'De annis et mensibus' and 'Calendarium Romanum et Graecum' helped to bring about the reform of the calender. It is a remarkable fact that Giraldi names CHAUCER ("Galfredus Chauserus") in his text (vol. II, col. 557 - G), noting Chaucer's high esteem in Britain and his many works, and describing him as a "Knight." Giraldi's information probably taken from John Bale (see George B. Pace, "Giraldi on Chaucer" in: The Chaucer Review, Vol. 7, No. 4, Spring, 1973, pp. 295-296). The 'Historia de diis gentium' (first published in 1548) is an influential encyclopedic manual of the Greek gods and goddesses, and forms the first part of Vol. 1. Henry Hallam praises this treatise "A work of considerable merit for the times, by Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, one of the most eminent scholars of that age, entitled 'Historia de Diis Gentium.' It had been preceded by one of inferior reputation, the Mythologia of Natalia Comes." According to the Biographie Universelle, "Giraldi is the first who has treated properly the subject of Classical Mythology, so difficult on account of its extent and complexity. He made use not only of all Greek and Latin authors, but of ancient inscriptions, which he has explained with much sagacity. Sometimes the multiplicity of his quotations renders him obscure, but the 'Historia de Diis Gentium' is still consulted." This edition features a double-page engraving which acts as a pictorial table of contents to assist the reader in locating each gods' entry. In the text, Giraldus refers to the works of Didodorus Siculus (Greek historian, 1st c. BCE) and his great work on mythology A second double-page engraving depicts medallions of ancient Greece and Rome. A section on The Muses has a full-page engraving; the section on Hercules features a spectacular engraving of the life and labors of Hercules including the infant Hercules strangling snakes put in his crib by Juno, his struggle with Atlas and his battles with the Gorgon, the bull and Cerberus the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades. The other fine engravings include a plate for De navigiis libellus, the funeral of Carolum Milthzienum Germanum, a mythological convocation of famous Greek and Latin poets, and a plate of the signs of the Zodiac, flanked by Bacchus, Ceres and Janus. Giraldi's life was filled with ill-health, poverty, and neglect. He lost all his property in the Sack of Rome (1527), which coincided with the death of his patron Cardinal Rangone. "He is alluded to with sorrowful regret by Montaigne in one of his Essais (I, 34), as having ended his days in utter destitution. His epitaph makes touching and graceful allusion to the sadness of his end. Numerous testimonies to his profundity and accuracy have been given both by contemporary and by later scholars" (E-B).       Leyde, C. Boutesteyn, 1696. Krivatsy 1076. Heirs of Hippocrates 427. Leyde, A. Langerack, 1711. "The "Opuscula" developed Bellini's earlier iatromecanical themes most fully. Organisazed onto postulates, theorems, and corollaries, it treats problems ranging from the hydraulics of intrauterine and extrauterine circulation to the mechanics of the "contractile villi". For example he considered the blood to be a fluid flowing through conical vessels, according to Borelli's laws of hydraulics, and he imagined that the "contractile villi" (which explain the body's reaction to stimuli) expand, contract, and vibrate like ordinary musical stings. In these carefully stated positions Bellini hoped to explain all important physiological phenomena according to the laws of mechanics." DSB 1, 593. Dos légèrement frotté, intérieur très frais. *****. In-4. Collation : (20), 261, (3) pp., 3 planches h.-t. Veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges. (Reliure du XVIIIe.).

Giraldi was a likely prototype for the mysterious Renaissance writer 'Giraldus' which William Butler Yeats described in "A Vision." Therein Yeats bases his mystical doctrine of "gyres" on an imaginary treatise "Speculum Angelorum et hominis," supposedly printed at Cracow in 1594. Other works by Giraldi contained in this massive folio include studies of the sacrificial rituals of various religions; the Ten Muses; Hercules and his famous 'labors'; ships, shipbuilding, navigation and other naval affairs of the ancients; funeral rites and customs of various ancient cultures; a biographical and literary encyclopedia of ancient poets; an interpretation of the mystical symbols used by Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans; a very curious work on the famous 'Aenigmata' riddles; an assessment of contemporary (i.e. Renaissance) Italian poets; and a collection of Giraldi's own poetry.         Isola di Capri/La Citta di Napoli

(Cfr: Brunet, I, p. 347; Ricciardi, I, p. 361).

Rome de' Rossi -1702; 1684; n.d. circa 1713 1696 - Together 2 volumes, large folio (approximately 49.5 x 36 cm.), eighteenth-century Roman mottled brown calf richly tooled in gold to a rococo design with curling leaf tools, fan-shaped tools, flowers, palmettes and fleurons, spines gilt in compartments with a large rose tool, German library label in each volume on front paste-down, a little light dampstaining, going into the top of image of second volume, just into the blank upper margin of the first volume. Superb examples of the art of the bookbinder. These volumes have bindings almost identical to those found on similar de' Rossi plate books, indicating that they were most likely made for the publisher; for example, see the Franklin Kissner Collection of Books on Rome, Christie's, 3 October 1990, lot 447. De' Rossi was one of the leading publishers of architectural works on Rome in the late seventeenth century. As well as buying up existing copperplates from other publishers and heirs of artists, he also commissioned new engravings from artists such as Castiglione, Bartoli, and Aquila. Rossi not only documents the modern classical architecture of Rome since the renaissance but also groups them by building types. The lack of text puts the images in pride of place and the choice of images constitute the sole editorial contribution of teh author and publisher. If one is to really understand the history of political thought, and the evolution. the revolution resulting in independent thinking & self-rule, one must understand that which came before, and that was the philosophy advocated by Filmer. The current assessment of PATRICARCHA, as a treatise on the Right of Kings to Rule, has been judged thusly by Paul Rahe, a historian [then] at University of Tulsa, " . the book is worth its weight in gold. It was written at some point after 1628 and prior to 1631. Filmer sought permission from Charles I to publish it at some point prior to 8 February 1632 and was on that date denied permission. It circulated thereafter in manuscript for nearly fifty years and exercised an immense influence on English royalist thinking. Eventually, at the time of the Exclusion Crisis in 1680, it was printed. It was of sufficient importance at the time that both John Locke, in his First Treatise of Government, and Algernon Sidney, in his Discourse Concerning Government, thought it necessary to go to great lengths to refute its arguments. . Let me add one other observation. Filmer's book, and his other writings, constitute, as Locke and Sidney testify, the great defense of patriarchal principles. Anyone studying history or literature or political theory who is interested in the arguments that once buttressed the claims of fathers to rule over their wives and children, and anyone interested in the style of thinking that liberalism constituted a rebellion against, will want to read Filmer."       Kobberstik efter forlæg af Erik Dahlberg. 28 x 35 cm.
