Logic: or, the art of thinking. In which besides the common, are c ontain'd many excellent new rules, very profitable for directing of reason, and acquiring of judgment, in things as well relating to the instruction of a man's self, as of others. . .

London: Printed by T.B. for J. Taylor, 1696. Third edition in English. Contemporary calf, blindstamped decoration on covers, morocco spine label. Other than minor staining on the endleaves, a very nice copy. celebrated and influential seventeenth-century treatise on logic by the Cartesians, Arnauld (1612-1694) and Nicolo (1625-1695). Logic or the art of thinking is better known as the logic of Port-Royal because the authors belonged to the sect of Jansenists who had their home at the convent of Port-Royal. The work deals with concept (idea), judgment, reasoning and method, with an interesting argument against negative numbers, later acknowledged by Leibniz. Despite Arnauld's earlier denunciation of Descartes' theological claims, the geometric foundation of the Port-Royal Logic and its methodology owe much to Cartesian rationalism, as well as to the ideology of the authors' fellow Jansenist, Blaise Pascal. Logic or the art of thinking has also been seen as a foundation work in probability theory, specifically in its attempts to axiomatically organize a science and to show its logical structure, taking as a model geometry. Divided into four parts, the authors reflect upon ideas, or upon the first operation of the mind, which they refer to as apprehension; considerations of men about proper judgment; the nature and various kinds of reasoning; and the methods of demonstrating truth. The 1818 English edition served as the basic text of logic at both Cambridge and Oxford.

Dimensioni 1130x835. Once he had realized his project to renovate and enlarge Rome, Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi) charged quite a few topographers and agronomists to realize the Roman countryiside land registry, putting the Jesuit Francesco Eschinardi in charge of the cartographic part. The best maps have been drawn by Giovan Battista Cingolati and Ameti, who realized two big size maps of the Northern and Southern neighbourhood of Rome. As Almagià points out, the two maps could be joined to form just one print, since they share a part where the river Tiber and Rome are depicted. This work is basically after Innocenzo Mattei’s (1626-79), a Camaldolese monk, who was official geographer of Clemente X and realized his work in 1666. When compared to Mattei’s Tavola esatta dell’antico Latio e Nova Campagna di Roma, Ameti’s work shows many analogies in different fields: classical references, the names of the streets, etc. It differs from its sources on the addiction of new places, especially along the coasts. The first map (St. Peter’s Heritage) presents a big cartouche on upper left, with the date, 1691, and the printer’s name, Domenico de Rossi, together with dedication to the Cardinal Francesco Nerli. The description of the territory is quite detailed, with wods, heights, the small towns and the lakes of Bolsena, Bracciano and Orbetello. The map of Latium, dedicated to the Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, has been printed three years before and presents a better relief of the Pontine marshes, and even the hydrography is quite different. Ameti’s map have been included, together with Mattei’s, in the second edition of De Rossi’s Mercurio Geografico. Copperplates, realized in four plates each, joined together in the past, with the technique of etching. Example in excellent condition, trimmed to platemark; sings of glue along the old folds.         Utrecht wandkaart - De Roy.

Two proposals, humbly offer'd to the Honourable House of Commons, now assembled in Parliament. I. That a duty be laid on malt, in the stead of the present duty on beer and ale; and likewise, that the several engagements that Revenue lies under, be transferr'd on that of malt. II. That a duty be laid on malt, and the present duty on beer and ale be continued. To which is annex'd an Accompt, what in all probability the frauds of brewers do amount to, and wherein such frauds are prejudicial to the King, to the Subject, and to the Trade itself: likewise by what means such grievances are most properly redress'd.

London, printed in the year, 1696. 4to, (2) + 26pp, old burnhole in leaf A3 affecting one word on verso, recently well bound in old style quarter calf gilt. A very good copy. First edition: the Lauderdale copy.> Wing B.5742. Goldsmiths 3258. Kress 1940. Massie 1358. Burnaby gives eight reasons why a malt tax would be just, profitable, efficient and speedy. Thus his first reason was that, 'Such a tax will be less than usually taxes are, by reason every person will pay proportionable in the price of malt. The more universal any tax is, it is to be supposed ... to be the more equal; and I presume, no person will deny that such a tax will prove so universal, that not any person will escape paying his proportion according to his consumption, ergo, no person can complain; who consumes little, will have but little to pay'.

Small 8vo (15 x 9.5 cm). 19th-century(?) sheepskin parchment.

      - Bierens de Haan 902; Muller, Pop. proza 1050; STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (same copy); cf. Bywater & Yamey, pp. 103-104. Second copy located of the 1696 edition of Dirck de Hollander's standard revision of a standard Dutch mathematical exercise book (with answers) for use in schools. The present edition describes itself as the fifth, but is at least the tenth and probably little changed from the 1685 edition, which also called itself the fifth. All 17th-century editions are very rare, the STCN recording 3 copies of one (1664) and no more than 2 copies of any other (some are not recorded in the STCN at all). The simple assignments are designed to teach basic arithmetic and bookkeeping for practical commercial purposes. David Cock was an Arnhem school master, active as such in at least the years 1641 to 1652. His present text book was his most successful work, with many further editions and adaptations to 1799.Slightly browned, but still in good condition. Boards slightly warped. A valuable window into 17th-century Dutch education and training for trade and commerce.
