Relations de divers voyages curieux, qui nont point este publiees

Amongst travel collections, Thevenot's occupies a distinguished place, being one of the most complete and lavishly produced; its scope includes Africa, the Far East, South East Asia, America, amongst other places. The relation on Australia is certainly one of the most significant and primary sources of information on the Island. The collection is also of great American interest; it contains Palafox's study on the natives, Acarette du Biscay's relation of La Plata and Gage's relation, which includes an important passage on Mexico, and is profusely illustrated. Asia and Africa are also well represented here, with actually more than half of the first volume being dedicated to it. Possibly the most important relation is that of Abel Tasman. The illustration is composed of maps, views and plates; the maps includes East Africa, the Indies, China, Hindustan, the Tasman map of Australia in its second issue -with rhumb lines- and several others; the plates show costumes, plants, architecture and such. The Tasman map is a cornerstone of Australian cartography, both as the earliest obtainable map of the region as well as the predominant depiction from which the World would know the Island for about a century. The importance of this map, thus, can hardly be overstated. An exceedingly difficult book to collate, "Bibliographers have expended great pains on the collation of the Thevenot collection" (Catalogue of the John Carter Brown Library, vol. III, 102); "Collection interessante, don't il est difficile de trouver des exemplaires complets" (Brunet). Thevenot's collection was published in parts and over roughly 10 years, thus almost no copy is alike another. The first part went to the printer in 1663, the second and third in 1666 and the fourth 1672, a fifth part was being prepared when death found Thevenot before completion. Sabin's note is very enlightening regarding this issue "It will be understood from this that there really was only one edition of Thévenot, and as that edition was completed only in 1696, the issue bearing that year on its general title-page is ordinarily regarded as the standard for collation." This collection has been collated against Brunet, for it appears the most comprehensive bibliography: "The standard authority on the work as a whole is still the Mémoire sur la Collection des grands et petits Voyages, et sur la Collection des Voyages de Melchisedech Thevenot, by A G. Camus, Paris, 1802. Brunet gave a collation in which he added two pieces not recorded by Camus." (JCBL). First volume: [First part] title; 5 ff. + folding plate (pyramid) + xxv (verso of xxv with plate) [Description des pyramides d' Egypte] + 1 plate; 52 [Relation des Cosaques et des Tartares & Relation de la Colchide] + folding plan; 25 [Informatinone della Giorgia]; 17-29 & 36-40 (several foliation errors, complete); 1-12 + folding map of Indoustan [Relation du Mogol]; 80 [Memoires de Th. Rhoe]; 30 (errors in foliation, pages 7 & 8 are replaced by a double page map of Indoustan, as explained by Brunet); 24 [1-9 a Greek extract of Cosmas' voyage, 10 & 19-24 a description of the animals and plants of the Indies, badly foliated but complete, as explained by Brunet]; folding map (Vera delineation Civitatis Bassora) + 2 plates with inscriptions; 35 (with plate on verso of pp. 35)[Relation du royaume de Golconda et journal de Floris]; 55 (erros in foliation) [Voyage de Bontekoe] + large folding map of Hollandia Nova; [Second part] title (dated 1672) + 5 ff. 20 [Remontrance de Peisart] + 60 (errors in foliation) + 4 folding plates; folding map + 128 [Memoire du voyage aux Indes Orientales, par Beaulieu]; folding map of the Indies + folding plate + 40 [Relation des Isles Philippines];16 [Also on the Philippines]; 48 (pp. 45/46 replaced by a plate "Maniere de faire la justice au Japon, as noted by Brunet, complete); 4 [Decouverte de la decouverte de la terre d' Eso]; missing the map of Pegu and Japan; 30 [Briefve relation de la Chine &  Flora Sinensis, by Michel Boym] + 5 plates of plants (3 folding). Second volume: [Third Part] title (dated 1696); 5 ff.; 31-68 [Voyage des ambassadeurs de la Compagnie-Hollandoise] + 4 plates & folding map; 28 [Route des Hollandois a Peking, Brunet explains how the map to illustrate this part is bound in the preceding part, as in this copy]; 221 (numerous errors in foliation, but complete, Brunet mentions 216) & folding map of China; 12 [Rapport des directeurs de la Compagnie Hollandoise]; [Fourth part] title + 1 ff.; 14 [L' Indien, Palafox]; 24 [Voyage dans la Riviere de la Plate]; 24 [Grueber, with Chinese alphabet, verso of pp. 23 a plate]; 23 [Grueber, same as before in French]; 24 [Sinarum Scientia politico-moralis], dated 1672]; 16 [Histoire de la Haute Ethiopie] + map and plate; 4 [Remarques sur la relation d' Ethiopie]; 16 [Relation de Lobo de l'empire des Abyssins, with a plate bound along with the Ethiopia map]; 8 [Decouverte de quelques pays]; 4 [Relation du voyage du Sayd]; title [Histoire de L' Empire Mexicain, dated 1696 and mentioning Moette, some copies, without date, mention Cramoisy, Palau never saw this variant] + 58 (46 plates); 40 [Relation du Mexique by Gage]. Here ends the Fourth Part. This copy contains several other relations, which are often lacking "On doit trouver, a la suite de cette 4 partie, les pieces suivantes, qui manquent en totalite ou en partie dans beaucoup d' exemplaires" (Brunet): 4 [Voyage d'Abel Tasman]; 12 [Instruction sur les vents entre les Pays-Bas et l' ile de Java]; 16 [Ambassade de S'chahrok]; 16 [L' Asie de Barros]; 76 [Synopsis chronologique Monarchiae Sinicae]; 2 ff. [Relation des Chretiens de Saint-Jean]; 18 [Voyage de la Tercere de Chaste]; 34 (i.e. 32) [Elementa linguae Tartaricae]; includes the very rare fragments: the Spanish on the Salomon Islands pp. 5-16 and the Asganii Sassonii pp.17-48; as mentioned in Brunet (the complete relations were not included), who also says that fragments usually lack in their entirety. Bibliotheca Lindesiana IV, 8830- 8840. Brunet, Manuel du Libraire et de L' Amateur de Livres, V, pp. 810-13. Palau, 331563.

Amsterdam, Casparus Lootsman and Jacob Konijnenbergh, [between 1696-1711]. 4to. Contemporary calf over wooden boards, blind-tooled in a panel design with the VOC-A monogram of the Amsterdam chamber of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), lacking clasps; rebacked, with original backstrip laid down.

STCN (3 copies); WorldCat (same 3 copies). Extremely rare, fourth surviving edition (the previous three only surviving in one copy) of a popular Dutch book of sermons intended for everyday home use, explaining biblical texts to the layman. It is known the work was officially to be included in the inventory of a "ziekentrooster" (literally a comforter of the sick) on board of ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and indeed the present copy has been supplied by the VOC as is apparent from the monogram of the Amsterdam chamber of the company on its binding. With modern library stamps. Rebacked as noted, with some wear along the corners and the foot of the spine, otherwise in good condition and still a good copy.

Declamationes: innumeris locis emendatae ex recensione

Johann Reinhold Dulssecker, Strasbourg 1696 - 861 p. Engraved vignette on title page. Spine badly chipped. Corners bumped, with wear to edges of covers. Bookplate residue front pastedown. Signature and library stamp on title page. Ink note and stamp on rear of title page. Some ink notes on rear endpaper. Moderate foxing, thumbing and dampness stains. Some red pencil and blue ink lines scattered throughout. Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (ca. 35 - ca. 100) was a Roman rhetorician from Hispania, widely referred to in medieval schools of rhetoric and in Renaissance writing. In English translation, he is usually referred to as Quintilian. These "Declamationes" have been attributed to him; however, there is some dispute over the real writer of these texts. Some modern scholars believe that the declamations circulated in his name represent the lecture notes of a scholar either using Quintilian's system or actually trained by him.         A New Voyage to the East-Indies in the Year 1690 and 1691

London: Daniel Dring,, 1696. Being a full Description of the Isles of Maldives, Cocos, Andamans, and the Isle of Ascension; and all the Forts and Garrisons now in possession of the French, with an Account of the Customs, Manners, and Habits of the Indians. By Monsieur Duquesne. To which is added, A New Description of the Canary Islands, Cape Verd, Senegal and Gambia &c. … Done into English from the Paris Edition. Octavo (164 × 104 mm) Contemporary sprinkled sheep, unlettered, double blind rules. 2 folding maps, and 5 engraved plates. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked and with some skillful restoration to the corners, light browning, slight stain to the fore-edge which does not carry to the margins, a very good copy. First editions in English. The first part is a translation of Pouchot de Chantassin's Relation du Voyage et Retour des Indes Orientales pendant les Années 1690 & 1691. Par un Garde de la Marine Servant sur le Bord de Monsieur Duquesne (Paris, 1692). His name is not given in this translation, but appears in the privilege to the French edition. "The author was employed in French factory posts set up in India, and travelled amongst the India Ocean Islands" (NMM). Pouchot's account of the fight "with fourteen Dutch and English ships" at Fort St. George (pp. 96–105) is contested by Dampier in A New Voyage, explaining that he feels obliged to relate the story (which was given to him by "the Gunner's Mate of Capt. Heath's Ship, a very sensible Man") because "there is such a plausible Story made of it in Captain Duquesne's Late Voyage to the East-Indies" (I, p. 522). Dampier describes a rather inconclusive and desultory engagement, with the Dutch and English "fleet" being an accidental gathering of heavily laden and under-armed merchantmen, rather than the well-organized force under two admirals portrayed in the French account published here. The second part is a translation of Le Maire's Les voyages du Sieur Le Maire aux îles Canaries, Cap-Verd, Sénégal et Gambie sous Monsieur Dancourt (1695). Le Maire was a surgeon with the Compagnie d'Afrique; his well-observed narrative contains probably the first account of the Canary Islands written by a visitor, and perhaps more importantly his work remains an key source for the study of 17th-century West Africa, interactions between Africans and Europeans, and aspects of the slave trade.

The Regulating Silver Coin, Made Practicable and Easie, To The Government And Subject. Humbly submitted to the Consideration of both Houses of Parliament. By a Lover of his Country.

London: Printed for Henry Bonwick, 1696 - Octavo (187 x 115 mm). Contemporary panelled speckled calf, paper label to spine hand lettered, raised bands, boards decoratively tooled in blind, edges speckled red. 19th-century ownership inscriptions to front pastedown and free endpaper, and written title label to front pastedown. Spine ends and corners worn, joints split with some loss to lower spine, paper label chipped, rear hinge cracked but holding, occasional spotting to contents, a very good copy. First edition. Pratt's contribution to the debate surrounding the recoinage of 1696 was paid for by the Treasury and broadly supported William Lowndes's case for devaluation.       Ienae : Sumtibus Johannis Bielckii, 1696. - 1696 Johann Andreas DANZ Jewish Hebrew Grammar Language Judaica Ebraeo-Chaldaeus Johann Andreas Danz’s work on Hebrew grammar is an excellent source of oriental languages. Danz attempted to perfect the study of Hebrew language and many of the terminologies that are used, even now, are attributed to him. However, at the time of writing, Danz inadvertently made the study of Hebrew grammar much more difficult than he had hoped. This work was the work that helped Danz create a name for himself, especially through his ideas of Hebrew antiquities. This particular printing seems to be rather unique. It is bound with two other works, which do not appear in library or bibliographical references. Item number: #459 Price: $950 DANZ, Johann Andreas Io. Andr.         Logic: or, the art of thinking. In which besides the common, are c ontain'd many excellent new rules, very profitable for directing of reason, and acquiring of judgment, in things as well relating to the instruction of a man's self, as of others. . .

London: Printed by T.B. for J. Taylor, 1696. Third edition in English. Contemporary calf, blindstamped decoration on covers, morocco spine label. Other than minor staining on the endleaves, a very nice copy. celebrated and influential seventeenth-century treatise on logic by the Cartesians, Arnauld (1612-1694) and Nicolo (1625-1695). Logic or the art of thinking is better known as the logic of Port-Royal because the authors belonged to the sect of Jansenists who had their home at the convent of Port-Royal. The work deals with concept (idea), judgment, reasoning and method, with an interesting argument against negative numbers, later acknowledged by Leibniz. Despite Arnauld's earlier denunciation of Descartes' theological claims, the geometric foundation of the Port-Royal Logic and its methodology owe much to Cartesian rationalism, as well as to the ideology of the authors' fellow Jansenist, Blaise Pascal. Logic or the art of thinking has also been seen as a foundation work in probability theory, specifically in its attempts to axiomatically organize a science and to show its logical structure, taking as a model geometry. Divided into four parts, the authors reflect upon ideas, or upon the first operation of the mind, which they refer to as apprehension; considerations of men about proper judgment; the nature and various kinds of reasoning; and the methods of demonstrating truth. The 1818 English edition served as the basic text of logic at both Cambridge and Oxford.

Dimensioni 1130x835. Once he had realized his project to renovate and enlarge Rome, Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi) charged quite a few topographers and agronomists to realize the Roman countryiside land registry, putting the Jesuit Francesco Eschinardi in charge of the cartographic part. The best maps have been drawn by Giovan Battista Cingolati and Ameti, who realized two big size maps of the Northern and Southern neighbourhood of Rome. As Almagià points out, the two maps could be joined to form just one print, since they share a part where the river Tiber and Rome are depicted. This work is basically after Innocenzo Mattei’s (1626-79), a Camaldolese monk, who was official geographer of Clemente X and realized his work in 1666. When compared to Mattei’s Tavola esatta dell’antico Latio e Nova Campagna di Roma, Ameti’s work shows many analogies in different fields: classical references, the names of the streets, etc. It differs from its sources on the addiction of new places, especially along the coasts. The first map (St. Peter’s Heritage) presents a big cartouche on upper left, with the date, 1691, and the printer’s name, Domenico de Rossi, together with dedication to the Cardinal Francesco Nerli. The description of the territory is quite detailed, with wods, heights, the small towns and the lakes of Bolsena, Bracciano and Orbetello. The map of Latium, dedicated to the Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, has been printed three years before and presents a better relief of the Pontine marshes, and even the hydrography is quite different. Ameti’s map have been included, together with Mattei’s, in the second edition of De Rossi’s Mercurio Geografico. Copperplates, realized in four plates each, joined together in the past, with the technique of etching. Example in excellent condition, trimmed to platemark; sings of glue along the old folds.
