DNB II, p. 719: ""[Thomas Pope Blount's] 'Essays on several Subjects,'...is the only work in which he has an opportunity of displaying his individuality as a writer. The essays in the first edition numbered in seven in all. The first illustrates the proposition that interest governs the world, and that popery is nothing but an invention of priests to get money; the second is on the great mischief and prejudice of learning; the third treats of education and custom, lamenting that as children are apt to believe everything, when they grow up they are apt to settle in their first impressions; in the fourth, on the respect due to the ancients, the conclusion is arrived at that we ought not to enslave ourselves too much to their opinions; the fifth answers in the negative the question as to whether the men of the present age are inferior to those of former ages either in respect of virtue, learning, or long life; the sixth demonstrates that the passions are our best servants, but our worst masters; and the seventh attributes the variety of opinions to the uncertainty of human knowledge."" An eighth essay would be added to the third impression, concerning religion, and coming to the conclusion that the God men image is ""a picture of their own complexions."" Wing B3349."

Lyon: Vander Aa, 1692. Eleven volumes, duodecimo, the first with four engraved folding plates, and all eleven volumes embellished with charming ornamental title-pages; one part moderately water-stained, another with slight marginal worming; a handsome set in mid eighteenth-century panelled calf with original labels. Jacob Gronovius was the father of botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius, correspondent and patron of Carl Linnaeus and the author of a treatise on the native plants and herbs of Virginia. This is a considerable publication, continuously paginated for a total of 3611 pages. The folding engraved plates include the detail of an epigraphic tribute to Cicero and numismatic relics relaying to the famed Roman orator.

Franckfurt am Mayn: Gottfried Tampachs, 1629. Fourth edition. Very Good. This work is Ercker's crowning achievement. It was highly prized in its time, and remained an important technical book for over 200 years because of its precise data concerning the fusion processes of gold, silver, copper, tin, iron, lead and mercury. "Ercker described laboratory procedures and equipment, gave an account of preparing the cupel, of constructing furnaces, and of the assaying balance and the method of operating it. He used as his model Agricola's De re Metallica, yet he was quite original and included on the procedures he himself had tested." -DSB IV 393.         Archaeologiae Philosophicae: sive doctrina antiqua de reum originibus. Libri duo.

London: Typis R.N. Impensis Gualt. Kettilby. 1692. - Burnet (1635-1715), who received his BA at Clare College, Cambridge, and his MA at Christ's College, Cambridge, was Master of Charterhouse and Clerk of the Closet to William III. He first espoused his theory of the earth's creation in The Theory of the Earth, published in Latin as Telljuris Theori Sacra in 1681, and in English in 1684. He suggested that the earth was a hollow sphere, with most of the water inside until Noah's Flood, at which time the mountains and oceans appeared. Burnet discussed his theories with his friend, Isaac Newton, who admired his thought processes, and even suggested the possibility that when God created the Earth, the days were longer. In Archaeologiae Philosophicae, Burnet amplifies his ideas in The Theory of the Earth. Whereas the earlier work is based on his understanding of scripture and history, which were largely speculative, the second book is an attempt to base it on the Cartesian world theory and neo-Platonist philosophy, and it was here that he got into trouble and offended many people, including the king, who made him resign his post. Small quarto. [16], 358, [8] p. Text engraving on p. 181. Separate title-page for Book II. Dedication to William III. Contemporary calf with covers ruled in blind. Joints cracking but cords sound. Several marginal tears and dog-ears, small wormhole at lower margin in gatherings K and L. Endpapers ruled in red, with some contemporary ink notes, additional ink notes in some margins, in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. A very good, unsophisticated copy. First edition of Burnet's second major work, an early attempt to reconcile the formation of the earth with the Biblical account of creation. Wing (2nd ed., 1994), B5943.         The Compleat Fencing-Master: In which is fully Described the whole Guards, Parades and Lessons, Belonging to the Small-sword

London: Printed for Dorman Newman, 1692. Second Edition, a reissue of the first of 1691 with cancelj title, of this early English fencing manual. Apparently the text is essentially the same as the author?sope?st The Scots Fencing-Master which was published at Edinburgh in 1687. Hope?s work was a basic instructional guide to Small-sword fencing in the new French style, which had replaced the former Rapier or Italian technique. The rapier, which was wide and heavy was replaced about 1550 by the very thin and light small-sword. This resulted in more reliance on thrusts as opposed to edge-blows, creating a back and forth motion and emphasizing the importance of speed. This is essentially the technique of modern fencing. The charming plates illustrate various positions. Wing H2712. Thimm p. 86. 8vo. pp. 11 p.l., 197 [i.e. 167], [17]. 12 folding engraved plates. contemporary calf (small surface abrasions on rear cover, title fore-margin cut into with loss of a letter on 4 lines & 2 letters on 1 line of imprint, light dampstain to lower outer corner of some leaves & plates, but overall a very good copy)

Alle de werken van de heer Michel de Montaigne ... bestaande in zijn proeven.Amsterdam, Herman van den Berg, 1692 (colophon: printed by Hendrik Harmenszoon, 1672). 4to. With an etched frontispiece by Laurens Scherm. Contemporary vellum with new endpapers.

Muller, Pop. proza 115; WorldCat (2 copies); for the frontispiece: Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXIV, p. 193, 69. An acclaimed Dutch translation by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker of Michel de Montaigne's deservedly famous essays. One of the essays is devoted to the "cannibals" of the New World and presents a highly idealized characterization of the Native Americans, governed by the laws of nature and still unspoiled by the vices of modern civilization, surpassing "all the pictures with which the poets have adorned the golden age, and all their inventions in feigning a happy state of man". The translation does not lack Montaigne's longest and most influential essay, on the 15th-century Catalan scholar Raymond of Sabunde, which expresses his extreme and perplexing scepticism, summed up in his motto "What do I know?".In very good condition, with modern annotations in pencil, some browning, slip with manuscript note on endpaper, joint of the front board cracked, but the binding still good. Montaigne's essays in a rare Dutch edition.

Fine mezzotint engraving of the famous castrato mezzo-soprano by Edward Kirkall (1692-1750) after the painting by Joseph Goupy (?-1782)

. The singer is depicted half-length in wig, coat, and west, with his hat under his left arm. 319 x 224 mm. A fine impression on laid paper. Remnants of mounting paper to corners of verso; slightly rubbed; trimmed to just within plate mark. In very good condition overall.. Senesino was a leading singer in the operas of Handel, Bononcini and Porpora in London. "Senesino's quality as an artist may be estimated from the series of superb parts Handel composed for him. Of his 20 roles in Handel's operas, 17 were original: Muzio Scevola, Floridante, Ottone, Guido in Flavio, Julius Caesar, Andronico in Tamerlano, Bertarido in Rodelinda, Luceius in Scipione and the title roles in Alessandro, Admeto, Riccardo Primo, Siroe, Tolomeo, Poro, Ezio, Sosarme and Orlando. He also sang Radamisto, Arsace in Partenope and Rinaldo, with earlier music supplemented or transposed. His compass in Handel was narrow (g to e at its widest, but the g appears very rarely, and many of his parts, especially in later years, do not go above d ), yet he was equally renowned for brilliant and taxing coloratura in heroic arias and expressive mezza voce in slow pieces." 1692 - Germania Parte Occidentale, Dedicata Al Reuerendissimo Padre D. Serafino Pasolino Nella Congreg Lateranense Detailed map of Western Europe by Vincenzo Coronelli, showing the western portion of the Holy Roman Empire. Includes regions of northern Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. The French region of Normandy is in the eastern section of the map, the towns of Lyon, France to Como and Brescia, Italy, are shown along the lower portion, and the towns of Ulm, Rotenberg, Gottingen and Lubeck, Germany are shown along the east edge. A decorative title cartouche is at the upper left corner, and an additional cartouche with a distance key is at the bottom left. The map is dedicated to Serafino Pasolino, an Italian abbot. This is the left portion of a two part map, the other portion of this map is listed in the auction as well. Coronelli was both a cleric and an encyclopedist, with a particular interest in geography and cartography. In 1681 Coronelli served as Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV in Paris, gaining special access to the most current records on world geography sent in from the colonies, and provided by the French Academy of Sciences. Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy, and a year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. He also started a successful publishing career, and was sole author or contributor to over 140 titles and produced several hundred maps, either printed separately or as parts of atlases. By the end of the 17th century, Coronelli was perhaps the most famous map publisher in Europe and received constant requests from his contemporaries for information that would enable them to bring their atlases up to date.
