Germania Parte Occidentale, Dedicata Al Reuerendissimo Padre D. Serafino Pasolino Nella Congreg Lateranense

1692 - Germania Parte Occidentale, Dedicata Al Reuerendissimo Padre D. Serafino Pasolino Nella Congreg Lateranense Detailed map of Western Europe by Vincenzo Coronelli, showing the western portion of the Holy Roman Empire. Includes regions of northern Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. The French region of Normandy is in the eastern section of the map, the towns of Lyon, France to Como and Brescia, Italy, are shown along the lower portion, and the towns of Ulm, Rotenberg, Gottingen and Lubeck, Germany are shown along the east edge. A decorative title cartouche is at the upper left corner, and an additional cartouche with a distance key is at the bottom left. The map is dedicated to Serafino Pasolino, an Italian abbot. Accompanying text with 2 town view illustrations of Kiel, Germany and the Island of Gotland, Sweden are on the verso. This is the left portion of a two part map, the other portion of this map is listed in the auction as well. Coronelli was both a cleric and an encyclopedist, with a particular interest in geography and cartography. In 1681 Coronelli served as Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV in Paris, gaining special access to the most current records on world geography sent in from the colonies, and provided by the French Academy of Sciences. Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy, and a year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. He also started a successful publishing career, and was sole author or contributor to over 140 titles and produced several hundred maps, either printed separately or as parts of atlases. By the end of the 17th century, Coronelli was perhaps the most famous map publisher in Europe and received constant requests from his contemporaries for information that would enable them to bring their atlases up to date. CORONELLI, V Venice, 1692 762 x 520 mm No color Some wrinkling and discoloration along left edge. A small puncture, approximately .1/2 inch in diameter, is in the top paper margin.

Piero Matini, Florence 1692 - 4to. [24.2 x 18 cm], xiv, 32 pp., (1) f. (¿Ommessioni¿), without initial blank, as often. Cancel on p. 17. Several corrections in ink by an early reader. Worming in upper and lower gutter. Bound in contemporary calf, spine rebacked. Generally very fresh. Very rare first and only edition of this book of geometrical problems proposed by Galileo¿s last disciple, including Viviani¿s own solution to the Florentine Enigma he had earlier that year published under a pseudonym. In the dedication to Prince Ferdinand de Medici, he identifies himself for the first time as the author of this challenge, which was occupying Europe¿s foremost mathematicians. ¿At the age of 70 Viviani, afflicted by numerous ills contracted in the countryside where he had been sent by his masters, housebound, turned to the many papers in his Geometric Exercises. The work is addressed to the ¿expert geometers and valorous analysts of Italy and abroad whose stupendous inventions have revealed to the world ¿the art of solving knots far more intricate than these.¿ In this volume he again proposes the problem previously published under the name of D. Pio Lisci Pusillo Geometra.¿ (Cinti, p. 314) ¿The problem was to perforate a hemispheric arch, having four equal windows, in such a way that the residual surface could be squared. Viviani solved the problem by a method that became well known. It is accomplished by the intersection of four right cylinders, the bases of which are tangent to the base of the hemisphere.¿ (DSB XIV, 49) According to the mathematical historian Montucla, Viviani¿s solution presented here ¿is superior to all others.¿ (Riccardi II, 628) The Florentine Enigma drew many responses the same year, most notably one by Leibniz who published it under the title Aenigma architectonico-geometricum Florentia (1692) and dedicated it, too, to Prince Ferdinand. The nature of the intersection of cylinder and hemisphere continued to occupy mathematicians until recent times; contributions to the discussion include Gregorius Maettig Kloss¿ Einige Anwendungen des Florentiner Problems (1856), or Leopold Klein¿s Über das Sogenannte Vivianische Fenster (1915). Viviani¿s work includes seven new geometrical problems of a similar nature, most involving the intersection planes and solid objects and their squares. It is notable that even at this advanced age, when Viviani had built a solid reputation on his own and Galileo had been dead for 50 years, the author signs his work, and heads every page of it, with ¿Ultimo Scolare [last disciple] del Galileo.¿ OCLC: Burndy, Chicago, Cornell, Harvard, Linda Hall, * Cinti 164 (mentioning the cancel on p. 17); Riccardi I.628-8.         Les Avantures de Jacques Sadeur dans la découverte et le voiage de la Terre Australe. Contenant les coutumes & les moeurs des Australiens

Paris: Claude Barbin, 1692. Duodecimo, title slightly dusted; a good copy in contemporary French dark calf, spine panelled in gilt. Revised edition, with many of the compromising passages from the 1676 first edition now excised. This edition was prepared by François Raguenet, possibly from a manuscript by Foigny himself. The dangerously heretical nature of the first edition has been tempered here by concentrating on the fabulous rather than the social and political. One of the earliest and best of all imaginary voyages to Australia, Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first time that the term was used to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent.Foigny (c.1650-1692) had a turbulent life. A promising career as a Franciscan monk was scotched by his 'licentious behaviour' and he was forced to flee to Geneva and Protestantism. It was during this self-imposed exile that the 1676 edition of La Terre Australe Connue was anonymously published. The narrative purports to be the dying gift of the sailor Sadeur to an anonymous narrator. Twice kidnapped and four times shipwrecked, Sadeur only survives when he is plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which fortuitously drops him on the shores of Western Australia. Ashore, his luck continues: as an hermaphrodite himself (the Jesuit priests called him male as a convenience) Sadeur is especially acceptable to the hermaphroditic, asexual society that he discovers. The Australians' utopian rejection of the body is responsible for their society's rationality and harmony. In this world Sadeur's curiosity and levity about the topic is considered very de trop, yet worse his 'propensity to unseemly arousal' (Rees). As in many imaginary voyages - Swift's Houhnyhyms, and their debates about the extermination of the Yahoos represent perhaps the best known example - the perfection of the community tolerates no impurities. Thus, the otherwise detached Australians are involved in a brutal war of annihilation with the Fundian 'half-men': crucially, Sadeur cannot stomach the war, a fact only complicated when 'bored by decades of sexless bliss, rational discussions and indoctrinations, athletic exercises and peaceful gardening … [Sadeur] falls for a female among the enemy' (Friederich). This important work, which combines several major traditions, is 'a major utopia, rich in satire and iconoclasm' (Gibson) and presents a narrative response to the strict regimentation of the utopia, particularly in the context of the Pacific (Spate comments: 'in part at least a send-up of Quiros'). Moreover, it is one of the most justly famous examples of the sustained use of realistic framing devices, including the key importance afforded to the role of the imagined Austral continent. Although relatively more common than the 1676 and 1701 editions, this is still a very rare work on the market.
