A collection of English words not generally used, with their significations and original, in two alphabetical catalogues, the one of such as are proper to the northern, the other to the southern counties. With an account of the preparing and refining such metals and minerals as are gotten in England.Augmented with many hundred of words, observations, letters, &c

printed for Christopher Wilkinson, London 1691 - Second edition of the first book in English on English dialects, 12mo, pp. [22], 211, [5] ads; full calf antique; a bit of spotting to the title page, else very good and sound. While on his botanical journeys throughout England (for which he is now famous), Ray (1627-1705) had the opportunity to study local antiquities and customs, as well as dialects. This work, first published in 1674, is an outgrowth of his travels, as was his Collection of English Proverbs, which was first published in 1670. On one of his treks into Cornwall, he made notes on the smelting industry, and recorded his observations, which are included in this volume, on the smelting and refining of silver, tin, and iron. Not included in the first edition, and integrated here, is a "large catalogue of northern words [with] their significations and etymologies," which had been sent to Ray by his friend M. Francis Brokesby, sometimes fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. At the back of the volume is a short account of the defects of the English alphabet, a brief section on husbandry, and Edward Lhuyd's "A collection of local words parallel'd with British or Welsh." Papillon's candidature for the shrievalty of London in 1682 became the occasion of a trial of strength between the court and the country parties. This case was tried before George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys of Wem, PC (15 May 1645 18 April 1689), The Hanging Judge. Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston PC (24 September 16481695) was an English politician and diplomat. He became a Jacobite conspirator, but his reputation in the Jacobite community suffered when he gave evidence against his co-conspirators in exchange for a pardon. He hired John Ashton and two other men to carry out his plot, who were seized and tried. Miles Prance (fl. 1678) was an English Roman Catholic who was caught up in and perjured himself during the Popish Plot and the anti-Catholicism of London during the reign of Charles II. When James II came to the throne, Prance was tried. He was found guilty of perjury in 1686 and was fined 100, ordered to stand in the pillory, and to be whipped. Condition: Rebound in half calf. A DIALOGUE CONCERNING WOMAN, BEING A DEFENCE OF THE SEX, written to Eugenia

London:: R. Bentley and J. Tonson,, 1691.. First Edition. 8vo, pp.(viii)1-134, (2 blank). Bound in contemporary, neatly speckled calf (worn along the hinge, spine stamping worn off). Preface by John Dryden. Although not uncommon in institutional holdings, we have not had a copy since 1985; there is only one listing in ABPC for the last 25 years. NCBEL II, 446 & 448. Wing, W-646A, Macdonald 136; Grolier 945; Grolier, Wither to Prior, 945; NUC locates 10 copies; Kanner p. 181. Walsh (1663-1708), was a man of fashion as well as a critic, poet, and member of Parliament. After the death of his father, he divided his time between the pursuits of a country gentleman and those of a conspicuously well-dressed, amorous beau in London. He joined the wits at Will's Coffee House in Covent Garden, presided over by Dryden. Ostensibly addressing himself to his mistress, Walsh dissects the attacks on women in contemporary literature with a strident defense of the intellectual potential of women and argues for the equality of women. Attacking the stereotypes that had been promulgated by anti-feminists, he reviews the biographies of notable women and defends them. Despite the subtitle, Walsh hedges his bets and agrees with some of the criticism of women as well. The addressee, "Eugenia," is believed to be the countess of Kingston, one of Walsh's mistresses. The most notable of his writings is the present work and his Letters and Poems, amorous and gallant (1692). His chief claim to fame is his early championship of the young Alexander Pope, who printed their correspondence in 1735. Of particular interest is the 6-page preface by Dryden in which he praises Walsh "that one so young, cou'd have treated so nice a subject with so much judgement.

PARADISE LOST. A POEM IN TWELVE BOOKS

London: Printed for Richard Bently in Covent-garden, and Jacob Tonson in Chancery-lane near Fleetstreet, 1691. First illustrated edition, first folio edition. Second issuance and printing, sold and printed in 1691. The first issuance of the illustrated edition was in 1688. This printing is more rare than the first. A copy with fine provenance, being the Kimbolton Castle copy with their small ownership label and identifying marks on the inner pastedown. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 12 copperplate engravings by Burgess and P. P. Bouche after John Baptist Medina. Folio c. (320 x 197 mm), bound in the original contemporary paneled calf, the spine panel sometime expertly and sympathetically replaced to style incorporating the original red morocco lettering label gilt. iv, 336 pp. A very pleasing, crisp, large copy, with wide borders. A well preserved copy of this very rare book. THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED AND FIRST FOLIO EDITION, SECOND ISSUANCE AND PRINTING. This is also one of the earliest examples of a book published by subscription as was the case with the first printing. In Five Centuries of Book Illustration (1988) Edward Hodnett calls this "the earliest serious effort to illustrate an important work of English poetry;" and in Francis Barlow: First Master of English Book Illustration he goes further and declares it "the only major English literary work with important engraved illustrations in the seventeenth century." The book was co-published by Tonson with Richard Bentley, and as with all of Tonson's more elaborate books this is printed on high-quality paper in a large, very handsome type. The copperplate engravings have a dramatic power that was only matched 200 years later by John Martin's gloomy mezzotints. Milton revived the heroic verse of Homer and Virgil to frame the tale of Satan and Paradise that has become the best-known epic poem written in English. He had difficulty in finding a publisher because of the plague of 1665, which killed many pressmen, and the Great Fire of the previous year, which destroyed many printing houses—and those publishers who were still operating were wary of the project because of Milton's anti-Restoration sympathies.

        Julius Caesar. A Tragedy

London: by H[enry]. H[ills]. Jun. for Hen Herringman and R Bentley, and sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders,, [after 1691]. As it is now Acted at the Theatre Royal. Quarto (227 × 166 mm). Early twentieth-century full red morocco by Riviere & Son, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands, sides ruled in gilt with a French fillet, gilt inner dentelles, gilt edges. Housed in a flat back cloth solander box. Joints neatly restored, paper age-toned as usual with seventeenth-century quartos, but a very good copy, well-margined all round. An unusually good example of an early quarto edition, surviving examples of which are commonly found trimmed and in poor condition. There is no lifetime quarto of Julius Caesar, which was first published in the first folio in 1623, that text being the sole authority for the play. Unusually for a major Shakespeare play, the text suffered no adaptation in the Restoration. The play was revived by Thomas Killigrew's King's Company in 1672, using the original text, with Charles Hart initially playing Brutus. Thomas Betterton (1635–1710), generally recognized as "the greatest English actor between Burbage and Garrick", took the part in later productions and is here listed in the part, with his boyhood friend Edward Kynaston as Antony. The quarto was first published by Herringman in 1684, the year he turned over the retail side of his business to Francis Saunders and his partner Joseph Knight, and the year before he published Shakespeare's fourth folio. It was followed by four undated reprints with closely similar imprints to this, and a 1691 edition with an imprint mentioning only Herringman and Bentley. In 1969 John W. Velz superseded Henrietta C. Bartlett's 1913 bibliographical ordering of these players' quartos. He regards the 1691 edition as the second authorized edition and identifies this edition as the first (QU1) of three undated reprints: unauthorized editions printed by Henry Hills Junior, the printer of the 1684 first quarto, most likely in the date range 1695–1700. But it is not the fourth and last of the undated piracies, which is not a Restoration quarto and has a different text showing signs of annotation from Rowe, which Velz therefore dates "from sometime after 1710, probably from sometime after 1714" (p. 181). This edition descends directly from the 1684 edition, and was probably issued in direct competition to Herringman's 1691 edition, for which Hills was not re-employed as printer.

Gulielmi Camdeni, et illustrium virorum ad G. Camdenum Epistolae. The Correspondence of William Camden

London - Richard Chiswell, 1691 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The scarceposthumously published collection of William Camden's correspondence and epistles. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and spine decoration. Recently rebacked. In Latin. The first leaf bears half-title on recto and portrait on verso. Includes a life of William Camden by Thomas Smith. The second part of the work has a half-title, Gulielmi Camdeni Annales ab anno 1603, ad annum 1623. The full extent of Camden's involvement in the intellectual, political, and international affairs of his generation also goes beyond his published writing and the professional offices that he held. A fuller measure of this involvement can be gathered from his correspondence, a significant part of which is collected in Thomas Smith's edition, V. cl. Gulielmi Camdeni et illustrium virorum ad G. Camdenum epistolae (1691), which also contains a reasonably full Latin life of Camden -ODNB. William Camden, 1551-1623, historian and herald. Camden's intellectual and literary legacy to his own and succeeding generations has been considerable. His work and friendship exerted both direct and indirect influence on writers and historians and helped transform the methods of historical enquiry and the forms and genres of their work. He had a profound interest in imaginary literature as well as in the many different forms of non-fiction writing, and he had exceptionally strong ties with the literary world, including such men as Sidney, Spenser, Jonson, Drayton, and William Browne -ODNB. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight rubbing to the extremities. Internally the pages have some browning with isolated spotting. Browning and foxing, with slight chipping is prominent to the first and last few pages. There is a light tidemark from the frontis to page 20 to the lower section of the pages, and light tidemarks to the top margin of the later pages 102-116. There is a small coloured annotation to the title page, and an 'Catalogued' ink stamp to the verso of the title page. Overall the condition is very good..

Venice,: circa, 1691.. Engraved map, 450 x 615 mm.; some small repairs, small section of restoration along the old central fold near the Persian Gulf, but in overall good condition, framed. A very fine map of the Eastern Hemisphere by the great Venetian cartographer Coronelli, which combines 'the most up-to-date cartographic information with elegant engraving and restrained accompanying decoration' (Shirley).Coronelli (1650-1718) was Italy's finest seventeenth-century cartographer, famous for a pair of globes he made for Louis XIV. He was a member of the Franciscan order, of which he became general, and founder of the learned society Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was involved in the production of some four hundred maps all of which he drew, engraved and printed. This Eastern Hemisphere map features a decorative coat-of-arms and descriptive text with astrological symbols at the side. Australia is reasonably well delineated with the discoveries of Tasman's second voyage taken into account. Notes refer to the discoveries of "Terra de Concordia" (1618), "Terra d'Edels" (1619), "Terra de Lewin" (1622), "Terra di Pietro Nuyts" (1627), as well as the island of "San Francisco" (off the south coast, mapped by Nuyts and Thijssen), as well as generally the "Terra di Diemen" and "Terra di Arnhem". Also marked are the "Rocher de Frederic Outman" (Houtmans Abrolhos, referring to the shoals on which the Batavia wrecked in 1629) and, just to their south, "Isole d'Edels Turtel Duyf" (the Turtle Dove Shoals, mapped by Hessel Gerritsz in 1627).A massive "Terra Australe Incognita" dominates the bottom of the map, but is here little more than a vaguely suggested outline with, to the south-west of Cape Horn, the "Terra de Pappagalli, creduta fauolosa" - the land of the Parrots, thought to be fabulous.Shirley, 548, pl. 383; Tooley, 348.

Priapeia, sive Diversorum poetarum in Priapum lusus, tom. II : Joannis Boschii In T. Petronii Arbitri Satyricon notæ. Scholia Reinesii ad utrumque Petronium Arbitrum & Dalmatam. Joannis Schefferi De fragmenti hujus Traguriani vero auctore dissertatio. Fragmentum Quod Albae Graecae Recuperatum est Anno 1688

1691. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Illustrator: C. Decker. Later mottled calf. No general title page, no printer or date, apparently a surreptitious edition, attractive engraved title signed C. Decker; near miniature, binding measures 3 7/8" x 2 1/4". Old signature crossed out on verso of first section title with browning, unmarked internally otherwise. Some editions of the same material (lacking the final section) appear with a title dated 1590 (though presumed to be later), but this collection can be dated to ca. 1691 when the spurious fragment of the Satyricon "found" during the sacking of Belgrade in 1688 was first published. It appears here in the final section. The fragment was the source of much debate, even Leibniz weighed in, and though found to be fallacious, was reprinted and included in editions into the 20th century. 58, 87, [1], 502, (39) p. Size: 32mo. Scattered foxing, but text mostly clean. Illustrator: C. Decker. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Erotica; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 043196. .
