Filippo Cecchi, Florence: 1691 - 2 Second edition, first printed in 1666/7. This marvelous work contains descriptions of experiments on air-pressure, freezing of water, an early account of Torricelli’s invention of the barometer, thermometer, electrical and magnetic experiments, measurements of the velocity of sound and light, and experiments on heat and cold. It contains many large, full- page engravings of experimental apparatus used to conduct these early experiments in natural physics. The engravings on pages iii, vi, viii and xiii show Torricelli’s thermometer with a column of liquid and capsules of various density liquids that will either float of sink, depending upon the surrounding temperature. Also known as a "termometro lento" (slow thermometer), this clever instrument is still marketed as a functioning curiosity today. As the mechanism of the atmosphere exerting continuous pressure on the surface of the earth was unknown at that time, the experiments using a barometer and bell jar (pp. xxiv-xxxi) seem rather naïve to us today. The members of the Academy couldn’t determine why the mercury in the column didn’t fall, once the barometer was ‘shielded’ from the surrounding atmosphere. What they failed to realize is that the air pressure inside the bell jar remained the same as the outside, since it had not been evacuated. Page lxxxxix depicts a curious experiment in which an organ pipe and a bellows to blow air through a pipe are encased in a vacuum chamber. The experiment demonstrated that when the chamber was evacuated, the pipe no longer made sound, even though the bellows were still forcing ‘air’ through the apparatus, therefore showing that air at normal pressure was a necessary component to produce sound. The Academy of Experiments was founded in Florence in 1657 and flourished for only ten years (1657-1667) and presents the first group effort at scientific investigation on the part of scientists including such original minds as Viviani, Borelli, Steno, Redi, Cassini and Torricelli. Its moving spirits were two of Galileo’s most distinguished disciples, Viviani and Torricelli. The necessary financial support came from the two Medicis, the Grand Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany and his brother Leopold; both of them had studied under Galilei. More than a decade before the formal institution of the Academy, the two Medici brothers had started a laboratory, well equipped with such scientific apparatus as was then obtainable. – Wolf. "This collection contains papers describing experiments on light, sound and electricity. Amber rubbed in vacuo magnetic attraction across a vacuum magnetic screening rubbed amber and gems discharging action of flames electrical attraction is mutual " – Wheeler. Barchas-Stanford 1345 (1666/7 ed.); Boffito, ‘Gli strumenti della scienza’, pp. 133-134; Brunet, V-29; Catalogo Bibl. This edition not in Bakken (but has the 1684 translation). Large 4to. [xv], CCLXIX, [20] pp. Half-title, title printed in red & black, title vignette, 75 copper engraved plates, numerous woodcut initials and head & tailpieces, index; prominent waterstains to corners, lacks the portrait of Cosimo (some copies have the portrait, others do not). Later quarter vellum, marbled boards, black leather gilt-stamped spine label, vellum tips. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Upper right corner with damp, fold traces, else good. First edition. A rare imprint printed in Lima with news of the death of Melchor Navarra y Rocafull, more widely known as the Duque de la Palata (1626 – 1691); the letter is written in the form of praise, by an anonymous party and addressed to a gentleman from Lima, whom in turn had it printed. It describes the process of his sickness and attempts to cure him, prior to ecclesiastical preparation for his death, at three thirty in the afternoon, April 13, 1691. Melchor de Navarra was a military officer and Spanish colonial officer; he reached the pinnacle of his career in the Indies when appointed Viceroy of Peru (1681 – 1689). During his reign he fought off the pirate fleet lead by Edward Davis who had previously sacked small town on the coast, and reestablished the Casa de Moneda. He stayed in Lima until 1691 when he sailed back to Spain, stopping at Portobello (Panama), where he died of sickness. It ends with a short note referring to the deeds and achievement during the colonial administration, naming his struggle against piracy in the Pacific ports and active administration. Palau, 61299.         The Salem Witch Trial's first prosecutor bills New York for returning the colony's public records from Boston following the fall of Edmond Andros and the Dominion of New England

New York, 1691. 5.5" x 7". "Autograph Document Signed, ""Tho: Newton,"" 1 page, 5.5"" x 7"", New York, 1691. Light dampstaining, expected folds, margins slightly rough, else very good.Newton (1660-1721) arrived in Massachusetts in 1688 to serve as an attorney for the Dominion of New England. Following the downfall of Andros and the restoration of colonial self-rule in 1681, New York Governor Henry Sloughter appointed Newton Attorney General and charged him with prosecuting Jacob Leisler and his associates. Following the trials, the colony charged Newton with transporting its public records from Boston to New York, the particulars of which are detailed in the present document which reads, in large part: ""Charges in bringing the Records from Boston & other expenses for the Country...To Porterage in Boston 00: 01: 00To one horse to bring them 03: 00: 00To Charges of the horse & forage 00: 12: 00To one Saddle & bridle 00: 06: 00To bags to bring them in 00: 16 : 00To my pains & trouble 10 - 15 - 0To the care of two horses to Milford 01: 04: 00To each horses 2: shods 00: 06: 00To one Seall [sic] for the Prerogative Court .... 02: 00 : 00""Endorsed on verso: ""Newtons Account for bringing the Records"" After Newton completed the task, he returned to Massachusetts. In May 1692, Governor Phips established a court of Oyer and Terminer in Salem to try accused witches, and appointed Newton to serve as prosecutor. In that capacity, Newton organized the first formal prosecution—the target was Bridget Bishop, who had been tried and acquitted of witchcraft already in 1680. In July 1681, only two months after his appointment, Newton left the court for New Hampshire. The reasons for his departure are not known, but he eventually settled again in Massachusetts where he developed a reputation as ""the best lawyer in America."" As an author he was prolific in publishing popular practical works of receipts, house-wifery, education and the keeping of animals; his views on vegetarianism proved an influential impetus to many, said to include the young Benjamin Franklin. This present work, originally titled Health's Grand Preservative (London, 1681) but changed to The Way to Health for an edition of 1683, collects a short second section discussing toleration for the first time. One of two slight variants of the second edition, both of which are rare. Of this imprint, '...for R. Baldwin' ESTC locates only four copies in the British Isles (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Rylands, Wellcome) and seven elsewhere (Adelaide, Library Co. Philadelphia, McGill, NYPL, US NLM, Virginia and Yale). Wing T3201A adds only four further locations, (BL, Royal College of Surgeons and Wisconsin-Madison). Wing T3201.. Second edition. 8vo.

The Case of the Irish Protestants : In Relation to Recognising, or Swearing Allegiance to, and Praying for King William and Queen Mary, Stated and Resolved.

London : Printed for Robert Clavel, First edition 1691 - small 4to., 26pp + 1 ad leaf, some occasional contemporary light soiling to title, with light old stain to extreme lower margins unaffecting any text, professionally rebound in late twentieth century quarter calf over marbled boards with title label to upper cover blocked in gilt. A VG copy of this rare item by Edward Wetenhall. (Wing W1490; Sweeney 5595). Edward Wetenhall (1636–1713) was an English bishop of the Church of Ireland. He held the perpetual curacy of Combe Long, Oxfordshire, and the vicarage of St. Stephen's, near St Albans, Hertfordshire; on 11 June 1667 he was collated to a prebend at Exeter, holding with it the mastership of the blue-coat school. He graduated B.D. at Oxford 26 May 1669, and was incorporated B.D. at Cambridge 1670. Michael Boyle the younger, then archbishop of Dublin, brought him over to Dublin in 1672, as master of the blue-coat school. He was made D.D. at Trinity College, Dublin, became curate of St. Werburgh's Church, and afterwards chantor of Christ Church. On the death (22 December 1678) of Edward Synge, bishop of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross, the sees were separated, and Wetenhall was made (14 February 1679) bishop of Cork and Ross, being consecrated 23 March 1679 in Christ Church, Dublin. At his own cost he restored the episcopal residence at Cork. As one of the seven bishops who remained in Ireland during the troubles which began in 1688, he was exposed to much ill-usage at the hands of the partisans of James II. He signed the episcopal letter of thanks (November 1692) to Thomas Firmin for his exertions in relief of the distressed Protestants of Ireland. Only one Irish prelate, William Sheridan (died 1716) of Kilmore and Ardagh, was deprived (1691) as a nonjuror. Wetenhall, who was translated as bishop of Kilmore and Ardagh on 18 April 1699, would not accept the preferment without trying to procure the restoration of Sheridan, to whose support he contributed. He restored the episcopal residence at Kilmore and rebuilt the cathedral at Ardagh (later demolished). He recovered lands belonging to the see, alienated by William Smith (d. 1698), his predecessor, but also sold a valuable wood of the see. A moderate on concessions to Dissenters, which he had advocated from 1682, he was prepared to go further than the English Toleration Act. He intervened as a peacemaker in the controversy on the doctrine of the Trinity raised by the publications of William Sherlock and John Wallis. In ‘An Earnest and Compassionate Suit for Forbearance by a Melancholy Stander-by,’ 1691, he commends Richard Hooker's ‘explication of this mystery,’ and argues that further discussion is futile and damaging. He followed it up with ‘The Antapology of the Melancholy Stander-by,’ 1693. Against William Penn he wrote a couple of pamphlets (1698–9). He was present (but not on the bench) at the trial (14 June 1703) in Dublin of Thomas Emlyn the unitarian, and subsequently paid friendly visits to him in prison. In 1710 he drew up a memorial to James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde, the lord lieutenant, urging the need of providing ‘books of religion’ in the Irish language, in accordance with the ideas of John Richardson, D.D. (1664–1747), a clergyman in his diocese. His later years were spent in London, where he died on 12 November 1713; he was buried on 18 November in the south transept of Westminster Abbey, where there is an inscribed gravestone to his memory.

[three lines in Greek, then] Flavii Josephi hierosolymitani sacerdotis Opera quae extant omnia.

Coloniae: Sumptibus Mauritii Georgii Weidmanni Folio. 38 ff., 1102 pp., 4 ff., 68 pp., 13 ff.. 1691 Josephus (b. A.D. 37) provides one of the very few non-biblical sources of Jewish history. This scholarly Cologne edition, in handsome => folio, offers a complete compilation of his works presented in the original Greek with Latin translation side-by-side on each page. The volume begins with the Antiquities of the Jews, translated into Latin and edited by Sigmund Gelen (1497–1554), who also offers a biography of Josephus, based on his works, and the Against Apion. The Jewish War appears as translated and edited by Rufinus of Aquileia (A.D. 345–410), and Josephus's history of the Maccabean Rebellion is translated and edited by => Erasmus of Rotterdam. In the five-part appendix are the Aristeas de LXX Interpretibus in Greek and Latin, translated into the latter by Matthias Garbatius; Ad Epitomen Aristeæ; a variorum of Book VII of the Jewish War and the Maccabean Rebellion based on the manuscripts in the Leipzig collection; a Latin version of the Libelli de Maccabæis by Francisco Combesis; and fragments from the p e r i p a n t a V , ascribed to Josephus, edited by David Hoeschel based upon the work of Stephan le Moyne. Sidenotes refer the reader to important historical details and parallel biblical passages. This edition was compiled from manuscripts in the Palatine library and is a revised and improved version of the Geneva edition of 1591. According to Dibdin, Thomas Ittigus, the editor, was "a man sufficiently conversant in Jewish antiquities, and an able reviewer of the MSS. and previous editions of his author." As far as Dibdin was concerned, this more than made up for imperfections in type and in paper quality (the paper is strong but inclined to browning). The title-page is handsomely printed in red and black, with engraved printer's device; there is a scattering of ornamental initials and head- and tailpieces. Full vellum over boards. Round spine with author's name and "Opera" in sepia ink at top. Inked personal ownership inscription on front fly-leaf; rather pleasing old library ownership stamp on verso of title-page. Lower corner of one leaf (H6) torn away without loss of text. Paper inclines to brown, as above, and there is the odd spot or underlining. => A substantial, significant volume.

Paisey 1988, S. 127).         HOLLANDSCHE MERCURIUS...

Haarlem, 1691. Small, thick quarto. Vellum over boards, manuscript spine labelling, edges sprinkled. Some light wear to edges of boards. Binding slightly separating from text block on first volume. Minor scattered foxing and toning, but generally quite clean internally. Very good, a handsome set in contemporary vellum. A complete run of this rare Dutch periodical recording news and events across the Dutch world, and with a wealth of information on the Dutch colonies. It was published by Pieter Casteleyn from 1651 to 1678, when his younger brother Abraham took over the publication. Upon Abraham's death a few years later, his wife took over publication until 1691. This run thus contains a complete set of the publication as issued by the Casteleyns (the work was later revived using the same title, but Sabin is incorrect in stating it was the same periodical). The exhaustive newsletter contained news from Europe - particularly England and France - and the Dutch colonies, such as New Amsterdam in North America, Brazil, and the activities of the Dutch East India Company. Each issue contains an engraved frontispiece and occasionally an engraved view or map. The early issues include several folding plates depicting naval battles; views include the island of Formosa; there are maps of different towns in Europe, including Strasbourg, Ghent, and London; and the frontispiece of the issue for 1660 shows a vignette of Oliver Cromwell being knocked down by the hand of God opposite a portrait of Charles II. The final settlement of the Eighty Years War with the peace treaties of 1648 cemented the many gains the Dutch seaborne empire had achieved. The period covered by the present newsletter begins a few years later, and corresponds to the height of the Dutch "Golden Century". During this period the Dutch built up their empire in the Far East in the hands of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In the 1650's they still pursued an policy of expansion in northeast Brazil, until ceding it to Portugal in 1661 in exchange for Portuguese interests in the East Indies. They kept a foothold in North America in New Amsterdam until 1664, and in various Caribbean islands after that. They also controlled the Cape of Good Hope. There is thus much of note here for historians of the New World and the East Indies. A fine run of this important Dutch newsletter, with a wealth of information on Holland and its colonies in the Golden Age. SABIN 32523. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 651/87. MULLER (1872), 965. JCB(3), II:410.
