1690 - 1755.. Folio. 30 cm x 19.8 cm. [8], 1-465, [1] pp. All pages, except prelims and final page, numbered & rubricated. Laid paper, 29.3 cm x approx. 19 cm. Vertical chain lines with centered jester watermark. Laid-in Medical receipt: [1] p., 22.5 x 19.8 cm., laid paper but with different watermark than above. Loose sheet laid in containing instructions for making an Ã’excellent & approved medicinal water to cure ye [sic - the] Rheuma of ye [sic - the] eyesÉÓ Full page of text signed Ã’probalumÓ at end. The sheet had at one time been folded into a small square for posting. There is evidence of a red wax seal that had been applied for this purpose.. Brown full calf binding; front & rear boards with blind-stamped Oxford ruling mimicking a quarter binding in design. Triple-rule blind-stamping on spine creating eleven compartments. No endpapers, pastedown or free, with binding structure visible. 'Vol I' hand-inked to fore-edge.. Some expected modest wear. A solid VG+ copy.. Apparently volume originally intended and begun as a medical text, to be comprised of 13 volumes, or chapters. Pages [i-iv] contain the index for the medical entries, in latin. The pages, corresponding to the entry in the index, are captioned with the appropriate heading. Turning the volume over and beginning with the final unnumbered page and working back to page 457, the text is comprised of accounting entries of amounts paid for things such as bread for orphans, for scavenger, stocker, water, and the parson. There are entries for the window tax, poor tax, the king's tax for the land lord, lamps, etc. The year is divided into four quarters: Lady Day Quarter, Midsomer (midsummer) Quarter, Michaelmass Quarter, and Xmass Quarter. The entries in these ten pages are the earliest, dating from 1690 to 1708, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the economy and financial obligations of the citizenry of this time. The volume is then turned over again and the entries pick up at page [v] continuing to page 115 with entries for rents and mortgages collected in the parish of Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton district, Somerset, England. Nearly all of the pages are full, but primarily, only the odd-numbered pages were used. These entries are dated 1690 to 1709 and 1720 to 1755. Written in a clear hand, with the entries by 1755 being noticeably larger and more heavily inked. While many entries are written in the first person -- Ã’Then I rec'd the first rent myselfÉÓ -- the identity of the individual or individuals making the entries is not recorded. The financial entries for 1720 on appear to be by a different individual than those of 1690 through 1709.The text as a whole provides a fascinating glimpse into the economy and financial obligations of the citizenry of Norton Fitzwarren, providing important and valuable information as to the cost of living at the end of the Seventeenth Century to the mid-point of the Eighteenth Century in one English parish. Many of the same names appear for the 65 recorded years of rents and mortgages, and by consulting parish records one can see the relationships between the citizens through marriages; the life cycle of the parish through births and deaths.

Hurlothrumbo: or, The Super-Natural. As it is Acted at the New-Theatre, in the Hay-Market

Printed for T. Wotton and J. Shuckburgh. First 8vo edition, preceded the same year by a 4to edition.. Some browning and minor foxing; fine copy.. Rothschild 1214. 8vo, modern sprinkled calf period style by Bernard Middleton, red morocco label, gilt lettering. An eccentric but successful light opera by an eccentric author and dancing master from Cheshire, originally preformed at the Haymarket Theatre as Hurlothrumbo, or, News from Terra Australis Incognita, with the Whimsical Flights of My Lord Flame. The play was the first success staged at the Haymarket, running 29 performances, with Johnson (1690-1773), playing his own lead, Lord Flame. ?Johnson's play was much ridiculed, for instance in James Miller's Harlequin Horace (1729) and Henry Fielding's The Author's Farce (1730), but it caught the fancy of Londoners for a while: it is even said that a Hurlothrumbo Society was formed? - DNB online. For the remainder of his life, Johnson often referred to himself as Lord Flame, and Hurlothrumbo became a word (though not so recognized by the OED) that meant confusion.

In toto sehr gutes, nahezu tadelloses Exemplar dieses kirchenhistorisch aufschlußreichen, als Original sonst kaum erhältlichen Werkes (very good copy; copie tres bonne).

Woodcut device on general & divisional titles and numerous woodcut diagrams & illus. in the text. General title printed in red & black. 4 p.l., 124, [2], 125-128, [2], 129-180 pp. 4to, cont. vellum over boards. Leyden: P. vanderAa, 1690. First edition of one of the great classics of optics. This book contains Huygens' classical formulation of optical phenomena in terms of the wave theory of light, opposing the corpuscular theory advanced by Newton. Huygens showed how all points of a wave front originate partial waves and thereby propagate further wave motion. Thus reflection and refraction of light could also be explained. By the same means the complicated phenomena of double refraction and the polarization by double refraction were also explained. Huygens' wave theory of light remained unaccepted for over 100 years until Thomas Young used it to explain optical interference. The second part of this book -- the Discours de la Cause de la Pesanteur -- contains Huygens' mechanical explanation of gravity. His "point of view was that gravity should not be attributed to a quality or propensity of bodies, but should be explained, like every other natural process, in terms of motion."-Wolf, I, p. 164. This copy belongs to the issue in which Huygens' initials are on the title rather than his full name (no priority established). A fine and fresh copy. ❧ Dibner, Heralds of Science, 146.

Small quarto (189 × 157 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked to style with red morocco label. General title printed in red and black, second part with separate title, continuously paginated, both titles with woodcut printer's device, woodcut headpieces and initials, 89 woodcut diagrams in text, a few repeated. Some imperceptible paper restoration to old wormholes in the gutter not affecting text, text generally clean and fresh, an excellent copy. First edition of Huygens's path breaking exposition of his wave or pulse theory of light. Huygens had developed his theory in 1676 and 1677, and completed his Traité in 1678. He read portions of it to the Academy the following year but left it unpublished until publication of Newton's Principia in 1687 and a visit to Newton in 1689 stimulated him to have it printed at last. "Light, according to Huygens, is an irregular series of shock waves which proceeds with very great, but finite, velocity through the ether. This ether consists of uniformly minute, elastic particles compressed very close together. Light, therefore, is not an actual transference of matter but rather of a 'tendency to move', a serial displacement similar to a collision which proceeds through a row of balls ... Huygens therefore concluded that new wave fronts originate around each particle that is touched by light and extend outward from the particle in the form of hemispheres ..." (DSB). His wave theory of light was in opposition to the corpuscular theory of light advanced by Newton, and was eventually completed and confirmed by Young and Fresnel over a century later. The titles in this copy are in the probably earlier state, bearing only the author's initials (C.H.D.Z.), as in the large-paper copy described by Horblit.

        Amerique Septentrionale

Chez Pierre Mariette, Paris 1690 - Among the most important French maps of North America of the second half of the 17th century, produced by the country's most esteemed family of cartographers. This very influential map was the official successor to Nicolas Sanson's 1650 map of North America. When Nicolas Sanson, regarded as the father of the renaissance of cartography under Louis XIV, died in July, 1667, he left his flourishing business under the charge of his eldest son Guillaume. The younger Sanson continued his father's partnership with the Mariette family, who were prominent Parisian printers. Guillame was determined to publish a new, updated edition of his father's Cartes Generales de toutes parties du Monde, the first French general atlas, originally published in 1657. The map of North America that appeared in the atlas, although masterful, was now considered to be geographically outdated. The present map, which appeared in the second edition of the atlas, featured updated toponymy, and is geographically based on Nicolas Sanson's wall map of 1666 (of which only two copies survive). While California is shown to be an island, in line with popular perception, unlike the map from 1650, it no longer attempts to build a geographical mythology in the place of the Pacific Northwest, which was then totally unknown. Appropriately the magnificent baroque title cartouche, which features swags and ribbons held aloft by putti, has been placed to fill this enigmatic space. Cartographically the map appears to be based on Sanson's maps of "Le Canada, ou Nouvelle France" and "Le Nouveau Mexique, et La Floride." Lake Erie is shown in a recognizable form and the entire Great Lakes network is shown in greater detail than his father's map, although the western lakes are still open-ended. On the East coast, Long Island is shown and the shape of the Outer Banks is improved. Several Indian tribes are identified in New Mexico where the R. del Norte (Rio Grande) mistakenly flows from an interior lake and empties into the Mar Vermeio ou Mer Rouge (Gulf of California). Iceland now appears in the Atlantic, as well as a bit of Britain. The map proved to be highly successful, and was sourced on numerous occasions by other mapmakers. The present copy is an example of Burden's second state of the map, with the date changed to 1690 in the cartouche and with additional place names and other changes: ".with minor alterations Terre de Jesso and Conibas inserted but without a coastline. Detroit d'Anian placed immediately above California and a few changes in spelling . New Albion is inserted in the north of the island, and New York replaces [New] Amsterdam" (Tooley). Burden, The Mapping of North America 404 (second state); McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 669.4; cf. McLaughlin, California as an Island, 45; cf. Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America , 399; Tooley, "California as an Island," 9 in Tooley, The Mapping of America. Copper-engraved map, period hand colouring in outline.

        An Essay concerning Humane Understanding

London: for Thomas Basset, and sold by Edw. Mory,, 1690. In Four Books. Folio (320 × 194 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, red sprinkled edges, red morocco label added to style. Housed in a dark brown cloth slipcase. Armorial bookplate of Viscount Hood. Extremities and joints skilfully restored, single wormhole in lower margin throughout (occasionally closed) below the text, a few trivial marks, but a very good copy, clean and fresh. First edition, Basset issue (traditionally considered the second) with the "ss" of Essay reversed, and with the typographical ornament unaligned. John Stuart Mill described Locke as "the unquestioned founder of the analytic philosophy of mind". Though it startled contemporaries by its denial of innatism, the Essay was founded on earlier philosophers, notably Hobbes, though Locke's account was far more thoroughly worked out, and such features as the distinction in book 3 between real and nominal essences were entirely new. "Perhaps the most original aspect of the Essay is, however, the conception of philosophy which it embodies. Locke abandoned the whole enterprise of first philosophy as practised from Aristotle to Descartes: he did not see himself as laying a metaphysical foundation on which natural philosophers could then build, but rather (as he put it in the 'Epistle to the Reader') 'as an Under-Labourer … clearing Ground a little, and removing some of the Rubbish, that lies in the way to Knowledge' (Drafts for the Essay, 10) … Locke's philosophy was immensely influential in the eighteenth century, not least in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, where it soon replaced the scholastic doctrines in which Locke had been educated … Locke was seen as having given a plain unmetaphysical account of the workings of the human mind that could serve as a complement to Newton's account of the physical universe" (ODNB). This issue has the Thomas Basset imprint; the other has the Elizabeth Holt imprint, and the "ss" of Essay correctly printed. Both issues have been championed as having priority, but recent scholarship indicates that priority of issue cannot be established: in his introduction to the Clarendon Press edition of the Essay, Peter Nidditch reverses his former opinion that the Holt imprint is the sign of a first issue, and John Attig's bibliography records it as a variant.

Estates de Pologne Subdivisses suinant l'Estendue des Palatinats

Paris 1690 - Estates de Pologne Subdivisses suinant l'Estendue des Palatinats Large scale map of Poland and Lithuania, including the surrounding bordering regions of Hungary, Austria and Russia. Rivers, lakes, forest, mountains and major cities and towns are depicted. A decorative title cartouche is at the top left corner, and a cartouche with a distance key is shown at the top right corner. Very brilliant original coloring. Born in Avignon, Alexis-Hubert Jaillot came to Paris in 1657 with his brother Simon, and both became sculptors. In 1664, Jaillot married the daughter of Nicolas Berey, an established mapmaker, and soon joined his father-in-law in the trade. Within a few years, Jaillot became the successor to Nicolas Sanson, the greatest French mapmaker of the seventeenth century. In 1669, Jaillot undertook the re-engraving, enlarging and re-publishing of the Sanson maps in sheet form and in atlases, sparing no effort to fill the gap in the map trade left by the destruction of Blaeu's printing establishment in Amsterdam in 1672-one of the most productive cartographic establishment in the Netherlands. Jaillot redrew Sanson's maps with many additions and corrections and fresh embellishments. Jaillot's maps are considered to be among the most decorative ever done. They are justly famed for their large size and baroque ornamentation, and do considerable justice to their maker who was the court geographer to Louis XIV. In 1690, Pierre Mortier began to publish Sanson's and Jaillot's maps from his Amsterdam firm. SANSON, N and JAILLOT, A.H. "One of the earliest interplanetaries of all, based on the theories of Descartes; Spirit voyages to the moon, peopled by those passed on from their lives on Earth, and then to a cosmos operated on Cartesian principles.         Le Globe Terrestre Representé En Deux Plans-Hemispheres Et En Diverses Autres Figures

Jean-Baptiste Nolin, Paris 1690 - A very beautiful and finely engraved world map, principally devised by one of the period's greatest cartographers This very fine map is the result of the synergy of the talents of Coronelli and his French colleague Tralage, popularly known as the Sieur de Tillemont. It principally depicts the world in a bi-hemispheric projection, and largely follows the geography represented on Coronelli's celebrated globe of 1688. California is shown to be an island, and in the enigmatic void that lies to the northwest is the 'Strait of Anian' that supposedly forms the western terminus of a presumed Northwest Passage. Beyond the strait, just to the northeast of Japan is the mysterious "Terre de Jessu," that supposedly represents Hokkaido. Much further south, the loosely-defined area that is now known as New Guinea is labelled as the "Terre de Quir," noting on the map that it was discovered in 1606 by the Spanish explorer Ferdinand de Quir. The only major addition here to Coronelli's established geography is the appearance of the Solomon Islands. Surrounding these principal hemispheres are eight diverse hemispheric projections of the world, evincing a playful fascination with mathematics and perspective that anticipated the Enlightenment of the next century. Adorning the two upper corners of the map are a pair of hemispheres capturing the world from an oblique perspective, one centered on Paris, and the other from its diametrically opposite position in the antipodes. Also, in the upper portion of the map, is a pair of hemispheres capturing the world in an ovoid projection, and resting in the spaces in between the two main hemispheres are a pair of projections depicting the world from a perspective centered at the poles. In the lower left corner, the entire world is captured on a projection centered at the North Pole. Most strikingly, in the lower right corner the world is captured in a cordiform, or heart-shaped projection, which since it was first devised during the Renaissance was considered an iconological symbol of various humanist values. Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, a Venetian scholar and Minorite Friar, became one of the most celebrated map and globe makers of his era. Throughout his industrious life he produced more than one-hundred terrestrial and celestial globes, several hundred maps, and a wealth of cartographic publications. In 1683, he completed the Marly Globes for Louis XIV, the largest and most magnificent globes ever made. In 1684 he founded the Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti , the first geographical society, and was appointed Cosmographer of the Republic of Venice. The present map is the result of the lucrative partnership Coronelli formed in the late 1680s with the prominent Paris cartographer Jean-Baptiste Nolin, who printed editions of Coronelli's maps that flourished on the French market. Coronelli published two atlases, the Atlante Veneto (Venice, 1691) and the Isolario (1696-98), and compiled the first encyclopedia to be arranged alphabetically. This map was first printed in 1690, and the present map is in the second state, as indicated by its dedication which honors Louis Philippeaux de Ponchartrain, the French minister of Finance.         Idea dell Universo

Venice, circa 1690 - Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) Idea dell Universo Venice, circa 1690 Hand-colored copperplate engraving; two panels 26 ½" x 34 ½" framed(each page separately framed) Condition: Very good, later color Coronelli’s maps and globe gores represent the most complete geographical knowledge of the world in the late 17th century. Coronelli was a cleric and encyclopedist with a particular interest in geography and cartography. He was author of more than 140 titles and produced several hundred maps over his lifetime. As Royal Cartographer to King Louis XIV, Coronelli had complete access to the most current documentation sent from the colonies to the French Academy of Sciences. Accordingly, his maps contain many legends that comment on the most important explorations and discoveries. After serving Louis XIV, Coronelli returned to Venice in 1684 and founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, a geographical society with membership drawn from the aristocracy and church hierarchy. One year later he was appointed Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. This vibrantly colored celestial chart represents an accounting of the major astronomical and astrological theories at the beginning at the end of the 17th century. In the center of the chart is a large celestial planisphere incorporating the rotations of the planets and signs of the zodiac, which is surrounded by 4 blowing wind heads and 5 planetary diagrams. The border is comprised of 28 smaller illustrations of solar and lunar eclipses, terrestrial maps, astrological charts - including a chart indicating which zodiacal signs govern the various parts of the body.
