A narrative of occurrences that took place during the mutiny at the Nore, in the months of May and June, 1797.Chatham, William Burrill, 1829. 8vo. With the errata slip inserted between the introduction and main text. Contemporary boards, plain paper spine with manuscript title label.

Cat. Nat. Mar. Mus. V, 1690; cf. Dougall, "The east coast mutinies: May-June 1797", in: The naval mutinies of 1797, pp. 147-160; for the author: Laughton & Lambert, "Cunningham, Sir Charles (1755-1834)", in: ODNB (online ed.). First edition of a rare and detailed account of the historic mutiny at the Nore (in the Thames Estuary) in 1797, involving several ships of the Royal Navy. The errata slip notes, "A few copies only of this narrative are printed for the particular friends of the author." The revolt closely followed a more peaceful mutiny at Spithead earlier that year and ended with the conviction and subsequent executions of 29 leaders. The demands of the mutineers included more shore leave, a more equal distribution of prize money and several changes to the Articles of War. The Admiralty, however, didn't accede to the demands and the prime minister eventually outlawed the mutineers. Richard Parker, elected president of the delegates of the fleet, was court-martialed and hanged aboard the 90-gun Sandwich, the ship where the mutiny had started. Parker's trial was followed by the hanging of 28 other mutineers. The author, Charles Cunningham (1755-1834), was commander of the frigate Clyde. He was refitting at the Nore in May 1797 when the mutiny broke out. A respected captain, he managed to suppress the mutiny on his ship after 17 days. With the armorial bookplate of John Gretton, Stapleford, 1st Baron Gretton (1867- 1947), on the front paste-down, and an 1849 newspaper clipping about prize money for the officers and crew of 2 ships, tipped onto p. 24. An owner has corrected the text in manuscript in accordance with the errata slip. In good condition, with the spine and joints neatly repaired and the hinges reinforced.

        An Essay concerning Humane Understanding

London: by Eliz. Holt, for Thomas Basset,, 1690. In Four Books. Folio (320 × 188 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked and relined. Collector's maroon morocco-backed slipcase (spine slightly rubbed and faded) and folding cloth chemise. Bookplate of James Strohn Copley. Original rear free endpaper preserved, with early manuscript notes, torn part of another similar leaf with notes mounted on rear free endpaper, contemporary marginalia throughout. Title leaf sometime washed to remove an early inscription, now a little browned in places and with minor paper restoration at fore-edge margin and extreme upper outer corner without affecting text, prelims somewhat browned towards head, a little browning in places elsewhere, a good copy. First edition, the Holt issue (traditionally considered the first), with two emendations in the author's hand. Locke worked for nearly two decades on his investigation of "the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge," concluding that "though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension, it can at least be 'sufficient'; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance, and can to some extent control our own destiny" (PMM). The significance of his Essay was immediately recognized: it quickly ran to several editions and was popularized on the Continent by French translations. "Few books in the literature of philosophy have so widely represented the spirit of the age and country in which they appeared, or have so influenced opinion afterwards" (Fraser). This copy has two emendations in the author's hand: "certainly sensible" has been changed to "extreamly sensible" in the dedication (A3v), and the word "some" has been added to the sentence "Every step the Mind takes in its Progress towards Knowledge, makes [some] discovery..." in the Epistle to the Reader (A4r). These and other similar corrections by Locke occur in several copies (for example Isaac Newton's) and may indicate that a copy so emended was intended for presentation. This issue has the Elizabeth Holt imprint, and the "ss" of Essay correctly printed. An issue with a cancel title under the imprint of Thomas Basset, with the "ss" of Essay reversed, and with the typographical ornament unaligned is also known. Both issues have been championed as having priority, but recent scholarship indicates that priority of issue cannot be established: in his introduction to the Clarendon Press edition of the Essay, Peter Nidditch reverses his former opinion that the Holt imprint is the sign of a first issue, and John Attig's bibliography records it as a variant.

NORTON FITZWARREN, SOMERSET Mss RENT BOOK. 1690 - 1755

1690 - 1755.. Folio. 30 cm x 19.8 cm. [8], 1-465, [1] pp. All pages, except prelims and final page, numbered & rubricated. Laid paper, 29.3 cm x approx. 19 cm. Vertical chain lines with centered jester watermark. Laid-in Medical receipt: [1] p., 22.5 x 19.8 cm., laid paper but with different watermark than above. Loose sheet laid in containing instructions for making an Ã’excellent & approved medicinal water to cure ye [sic - the] Rheuma of ye [sic - the] eyesÉÓ Full page of text signed Ã’probalumÓ at end. The sheet had at one time been folded into a small square for posting. There is evidence of a red wax seal that had been applied for this purpose.. Brown full calf binding; front & rear boards with blind-stamped Oxford ruling mimicking a quarter binding in design. Triple-rule blind-stamping on spine creating eleven compartments. No endpapers, pastedown or free, with binding structure visible. 'Vol I' hand-inked to fore-edge.. Some expected modest wear. A solid VG+ copy.. Apparently volume originally intended and begun as a medical text, to be comprised of 13 volumes, or chapters. Pages [i-iv] contain the index for the medical entries, in latin. The pages, corresponding to the entry in the index, are captioned with the appropriate heading. & & Turning the volume over and beginning with the final unnumbered page and working back to page 457, the text is comprised of accounting entries of amounts paid for things such as bread for orphans, for scavenger, stocker, water, and the parson. There are entries for the window tax, poor tax, the king's tax for the land lord, lamps, etc. The year is divided into four quarters: Lady Day Quarter, Midsomer (midsummer) Quarter, Michaelmass Quarter, and Xmass Quarter. The entries in these ten pages are the earliest, dating from 1690 to 1708, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the economy and financial obligations of the citizenry of this time.& & The volume is then turned over again and the entries pick up at page [v] continuing to page 115 with entries for rents and mortgages collected in the parish of Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton district, Somerset, England. Nearly all of the pages are full, but primarily, only the odd-numbered pages were used. These entries are dated 1690 to 1709 and 1720 to 1755. Written in a clear hand, with the entries by 1755 being noticeably larger and more heavily inked. While many entries are written in the first person -- Ã’Then I rec'd the first rent myselfÉÓ -- the identity of the individual or individuals making the entries is not recorded. The financial entries for 1720 on appear to be by a different individual than those of 1690 through 1709.& & The text as a whole provides a fascinating glimpse into the economy and financial obligations of the citizenry of Norton Fitzwarren, providing important and valuable information as to the cost of living at the end of the Seventeenth Century to the mid-point of the Eighteenth Century in one English parish. Many of the same names appear for the 65 recorded years of rents and mortgages, and by consulting parish records one can see the relationships between the citizens through marriages; the life cycle of the parish through births and deaths.

Turning the volume over and beginning with the final unnumbered page and working back to page 457, the text is comprised of accounting entries of amounts paid for things such as bread for orphans, for scavenger, stocker, water, and the parson. There are entries for the window tax, poor tax, the king's tax for the land lord, lamps, etc. The year is divided into four quarters: Lady Day Quarter, Midsomer (midsummer) Quarter, Michaelmass Quarter, and Xmass Quarter. The entries in these ten pages are the earliest, dating from 1690 to 1708, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the economy and financial obligations of the citizenry of this time. The volume is then turned over again and the entries pick up at page [v] continuing to page 115 with entries for rents and mortgages collected in the parish of Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton district, Somerset, England. The financial entries for 1720 on appear to be by a different individual than those of 1690 through 1709.The text as a whole provides a fascinating glimpse into the economy and financial obligations of the citizenry of Norton Fitzwarren, providing important and valuable information as to the cost of living at the end of the Seventeenth Century to the mid-point of the Eighteenth Century in one English parish. Many of the same names appear for the 65 recorded years of rents and mortgages, and by consulting parish records one can see the relationships between the citizens through marriages; the life cycle of the parish through births and deaths.

Hurlothrumbo: or, The Super-Natural. As it is Acted at the New-Theatre, in the Hay-Market

Printed for T. Wotton and J. Shuckburgh. First 8vo edition, preceded the same year by a 4to edition.. Some browning and minor foxing; fine copy.. Rothschild 1214. 8vo, modern sprinkled calf period style by Bernard Middleton, red morocco label, gilt lettering. An eccentric but successful light opera by an eccentric author and dancing master from Cheshire, originally preformed at the Haymarket Theatre as Hurlothrumbo, or, News from Terra Australis Incognita, with the Whimsical Flights of My Lord Flame. The play was the first success staged at the Haymarket, running 29 performances, with Johnson (1690-1773), playing his own lead, Lord Flame. ?Johnson's play was much ridiculed, for instance in James Miller's Harlequin Horace (1729) and Henry Fielding's The Author's Farce (1730), but it caught the fancy of Londoners for a while: it is even said that a Hurlothrumbo Society was formed? - DNB online. For the remainder of his life, Johnson often referred to himself as Lord Flame, and Hurlothrumbo became a word (though not so recognized by the OED) that meant confusion.

In toto sehr gutes, nahezu tadelloses Exemplar dieses kirchenhistorisch aufschlußreichen, als Original sonst kaum erhältlichen Werkes (very good copy; copie tres bonne).

Woodcut device on general & divisional titles and numerous woodcut diagrams & illus. in the text. General title printed in red & black. 4 p.l., 124, [2], 125-128, [2], 129-180 pp. 4to, cont. vellum over boards. Leyden: P. vanderAa, 1690. First edition of one of the great classics of optics. This book contains Huygens' classical formulation of optical phenomena in terms of the wave theory of light, opposing the corpuscular theory advanced by Newton. Huygens showed how all points of a wave front originate partial waves and thereby propagate further wave motion. Thus reflection and refraction of light could also be explained. By the same means the complicated phenomena of double refraction and the polarization by double refraction were also explained. Huygens' wave theory of light remained unaccepted for over 100 years until Thomas Young used it to explain optical interference. The second part of this book -- the Discours de la Cause de la Pesanteur -- contains Huygens' mechanical explanation of gravity. His "point of view was that gravity should not be attributed to a quality or propensity of bodies, but should be explained, like every other natural process, in terms of motion."-Wolf, I, p. 164. This copy belongs to the issue in which Huygens' initials are on the title rather than his full name (no priority established). A fine and fresh copy. ❧ Dibner, Heralds of Science, 146.

Small quarto (189 × 157 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked to style with red morocco label. General title printed in red and black, second part with separate title, continuously paginated, both titles with woodcut printer's device, woodcut headpieces and initials, 89 woodcut diagrams in text, a few repeated. Some imperceptible paper restoration to old wormholes in the gutter not affecting text, text generally clean and fresh, an excellent copy. First edition of Huygens's path breaking exposition of his wave or pulse theory of light. Huygens had developed his theory in 1676 and 1677, and completed his Traité in 1678. He read portions of it to the Academy the following year but left it unpublished until publication of Newton's Principia in 1687 and a visit to Newton in 1689 stimulated him to have it printed at last. "Light, according to Huygens, is an irregular series of shock waves which proceeds with very great, but finite, velocity through the ether. This ether consists of uniformly minute, elastic particles compressed very close together. Light, therefore, is not an actual transference of matter but rather of a 'tendency to move', a serial displacement similar to a collision which proceeds through a row of balls ... Huygens therefore concluded that new wave fronts originate around each particle that is touched by light and extend outward from the particle in the form of hemispheres ..." (DSB). His wave theory of light was in opposition to the corpuscular theory of light advanced by Newton, and was eventually completed and confirmed by Young and Fresnel over a century later. The titles in this copy are in the probably earlier state, bearing only the author's initials (C.H.D.Z.), as in the large-paper copy described by Horblit.
