        Introductio generalis in Rem Herbariam.

Ordines Plantarum quae sunt Flore irregulari. Lipsiae, sumptibus Autoris, C. Güntheri; C. Fleischeri; J.H. Richteri, 1690-1699. 4 parts (bound in one). Large-Folio (447 x 290mm). With 385 engraved plates. Contemporary full calf, gilt coat of arms on covers, spine with 6 raised bands, richly gilt, with red gilt lettered label (very skilful rebacking). Our copy collates as Junk's copy, see Junk Rara I, p. 60. Nissen has one plate less than the above copy. All published by Rivinus, a supplement part was published much later in 1764 by C.L. Ludwig with 17 plates. The present work is a great botanical rarity, there was no copy in the Plesch collection and only a copy with 244 plates, in rather bad condition, in the de Belder collection. "The principal strain of endemic German taxonomy goes back to A.Q. Rivinus... and his 'Introductio generalis in rem herbariam' of 1690. Rivinus was, in Linnaean terminology, a 'corollist'. He rejected the age-old basic split in the plant kingdom between trees and herbs and proposed a purely utilitarian system based on the structure of the corolla ... Rivinus did not pretend to propose a natural system; like his contemporary Tournefort, he just wanted a simple and orderly device to classify plants. This Rivinian strain of thought was taken up by quite a few of the later German authors." (Stafleu. Linnaeus and the Linnaeans pp. 241-242). /August Quirinius Rivinus (Leipzig 1652-1723, Latinised name for Bachmann) was professor of pathology at the University of Leipzig. "Rivinus' main scientific interest, however was botany, particularly botanical taxonomy. In 1690 he published 'Introductio generalis in rem herbariam', with 125 tables of 'plants with irregular flowers of one petal' (Labiatae and others). Atlases of 'irregular' flowers of four petals (mostly Leguminosae, 121 tables) of five petals (mostly Umbelliferae, 139 tables) followed in 1691 and in 1699. Rivinius published these tables at his own expense; and it is therefore no wonder that he could not afford to bring out the last volume he had prepared, which dealt with 'irregular' flowers of six petals (orchids). He anticipated Tournefort and Linnaeus in devising an artificial system of plant classification (ordines) based on the number of petals of a flower and on its regularity or irregularity? Since he emphasized the need for short plant names of no more than two words, Rivinius was a pioneer of modern binomial nomenclature" (DSB I, p, 368-9)./Collation of this rare work is difficult and most bibliographies disagree. /Except for the occasional browning, due to the quality of the paper, and which all copies have, an excellent copy in a very attractive binding.//Nissen BBI, 1642.

Completo e ottimamente conservato all'interno, raro. Lipperheide n.3036. Landwehr, Romeyn de Hooghe, 39. Hollstein, IX, p.132. ''Historically speaking, the most important treatise on unarmed combat ever printed. the finest of all wrestling books and deservedly the most famous'' (S.Anglo, The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe, 190). ''The combination of Petter''''s lucid descriptions, devoid of all jargon, and de Hooge?s masterful depiction of pain and violence in the engravings, elevates the book to its position of solitary eminence. It is also probably unique in presenting an effective and complete unarmed combat system in a format from which it would be actually possible to learn? (Eli Steenput). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ledrou e Farvacques [spine title]. Louvain?, c. 1690. -[500] ff. Eleven parts. Quarto (8" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary calf, gilt spine with raised bands. Rubbed, backstrip worn and partially detached, corners bumped and worn, boards beginning to separate, but secured by cords, several endleaves lacking, final leaf and rear endleaf detached, some edgewear to first few and final leaves, a few cracks to text block. First 3/5 of the volume in a fine, neat secretarial hand, remaining 2/5 in larger, but equally legible, hand. Light toning, somewhat heavier in places. * According to the spine title and interior notes, this collection of legal works are writings by two eminent Belgian members of the Order of St. Augustin: Bishop Pierre Lambert Ledrou, titular bishop of Porfireone from 1692 to 1721, and Francois Farvacques. Both men were professors of law at the University of Louvain in the late 1600s and early years of the eighteenth century. The spine title describes the contents as "Dictata," that is, lessons. The neat hand, clear organization and absence of serious revisions suggest they are lectures or texts for publication. The first parts are lessons by Ledrou. It begins with an 8-page introduction with descriptions of 13 cases. The following section (c. 50 ff.) is headed "Tractatus de Legibus Quid Lex et Quotuplex." It has neat additions and marginal notes in the same hand as the main text. The following lesson, which is foliated from 1-182, is titled "Caput Primum de Jure et Justitia in Genere de Dominio, Nec non de Modis Illud Acquirendi-Quaestio Prima Quid et Quotuplex sit Justitia.' This is followed by a 50 ff. theological text titled: "Tractatus de Sacramento Poenitentiae." The second half of the volume consist of writings by Farvacques. The first part of his writings is headed "Caput Primum. De Jurisdictione Oria in Ministro Sacramenti Penitentie, c. 130 ff. The final treatise is in possibly the same hand as the first part of the volume, on 63 numbered ff. These sections deal mostly with points of canon law. The emphasis on St. Augustine appears to have had a history at the University of Louvain in the teaching of Michael Baius [d. 1584]. This th

London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill, 1690. 4to (20 cm; 8"). [2], 68 pp., without the half-title. [with the same author's] A third letter for toleration, to the author of the Third letter concerning toleration. London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill, 1692. 4to (20 cm; 8"). [4], 350, [2] pp. Contemporary plain calf with modest blind-tooled floral corner devices on the boards; rebacked. Ex-library with bookplate; stamp on front free endpaper and on title-page of The Second Letter only, otherwise unmarked. Without the half-title to The Second Letter. In a quarter brown morocco solander case with brown cloth sides; raised bands accented by gilt rules above and below each band; gilt center devices in spine compartments. First three editions bound together. Locke's letters on toleration were widely read and served as major philosophical support for freedom of worship by all, including Jews, Muslims, and pagans. His influence extended north across the Scottish border, east across the Channel influencing Scottish and Continental Enlightenment thinkers, and west across the Atlantic, having demonstrable influence on the likes of Jefferson and other American Founding Fathers and being a major part of the underpinning of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Present in this volume are copies of the first three of Locke's letters on toleration, the only ones published during his lifetime. The volume leads off with the second edition in English, corrected, of the first letter, this having first appeared in 1689 in Latin (Epistola de tolerantia) and in the same year in English in a quarto edition of 61 pages. Translated by William Popple, it is here in 12mo format. That is followed by Locke's Second Letter, in quarto, written in reply to Jonas Proast's The Argument of the Letter concerning Toleration considered and answered (Oxford, 1690), and then by his Third Letter, also quarto, which continued the debate with Proast by reply to the Oxfordian's own Third Letter. A fourth letter was left in manuscript at Locke's death in 1702; it was first published in the Posthumous Works of Mr. John Locke (1706) but seems never to have appeared in a free-standing edition of its own. Provenance: Pacific School of Religion (properly released). I: Wing (rev. ed.); L2748; ESTC R21477. II: Wing (rev. ed.) L2755; ESTC R5484. III: Wing (rev. ed.) L2765; ESTC R5673.

[Attributes: First Edition]

The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament, and the New.

London: Printed by Charles Bill & Thomas Newcomb 8vo (20 cm; 8"). [573] ff.. 1690 [or possibly 1692] [also bound in at rear] Bible. O.T. Psalms. English. Paraphrases. 1693. Sternhold & Hopkins. The whole book of psalms. Collected into English metre. London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1693. 8vo. 87, [1] p. A handsomely bound late 17th-century printing of the King James Bible, this begins with an engraved title-leaf featuring the title within an architectural frame; the text of the Bible is printed on thin paper in double-column format. => The entire volume has been ruled by hand in red. The title-page of the New Testament is dated 1694 and bears the imprint "Printed by Charles Bill and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd," and the signing of the signatures is absolutely continuous from the O.T. — that is the last leaf of the O.T. is Iii6 and the title-leaf of the N.T. is Iiii7. Curiously, on the engraved main title-page the date area shows erasure of a date that might have been 1692 or 1682 in roman numerals. It is possible that the 1690 date in roman is in excellent pen and ink facsimile. Binding: Contemporary black goat with a complicated and beautiful overall pattern of gilt tooling using acorn, star, and flower devices, a leaf-vine roll, a double- and a triple-fillet, hashed triangles, and a few other tools. The tall slim central panel is accented at all corners with heart forms, these revealed by three survivors on the back cover to have been => red leather onlays. Spine also elaborately gilt-tooled with some of the same tools reappearing and with two compartments incorporating capital letters hard to make out: "H OP K / I N S"? All edges gilt and gauffered. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). The collation by signatures of this edition of the Bible does not match that in any of the bibliographies or databases listed below for an 8vo Bible dated 1682, 1690, or 1692. Binding as above, with light overall abrading; some portions of board edges and the four corners of the boards restored, with some still/again abraded; gilt faded in some portions and elsewhere bright. Red-ruled text has been spared trimming of captions or catchwords; very occasionally a sidenote has been just touched. The leaf on which Jesus declares that he is the way, the truth, and the life is firmly dog-eared. => Overall a handsomely produced and well-cherished King James Bible, with S&H, in a still very impressive Restoration binding.

Uhlhorn. Couverture usagée. Hirsch V, p. 139. Garrison & Morton n° 1727. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
