Antique Master Print-MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH LAKE-VILLAGES-H.73-Waterloo-1690

      - Plate: Mountain Landscape with figures and a lake with towns (Hollstein 73). 17 th. c. ed. on paper with no watermark visible. Expert assessment. Provenance: with collection mark: vE (in circle): (van Eeghen, Lugt 385) Etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. It is assumed by experts that Cornelis Danckerts II acquired control of the waterloo plates as early 1655, so well during Waterloo's lifetime. As such most 17th. C. plates are published by Danckerts. The numbering of the plates also points to that. The plates later passed over to the Ottens family earliest 1717.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the workshop and were influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Very good. Excellent impression. General age related toning. Staining at top middle. With narrow margins, as common. Some remains of paper tape on rear from previous storing. This item has not been washed, cleaned, bleached, restored. Please study scan carfully. Storage location: Q2-263 LA The overall size is ca. 6.6 x 4.5 inch. The image size is ca. 6.5 x 4.4 inch.         Mercurio geografico overo guida geografica in tutte le parti del mondo conforme le tavole geografiche del Sansone Baudrand e Cantelli. Data in luce con direttione, e cura di Gio. Giacomo de Rossi nella sua stamperia

Roma, De Rossi 1690 - In folio (mm 477x325). Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\VEAE\005442; A. Bonazzi, Il Mercurio geografico: il gioco e la differenza, in: "Giacomo Cantelli: geografo del Serenissimo", Bologna, 1995, pp. 37-44 e 150-152; A.         Memoires relating to the state of the Royal Navy of England, for ten years, determin'd December 1688.

London Printed anno MDCXC 1690 - First edition. 8vo (182 x 112 mm). [2], 214, [18] pp., large paper copy, inscribed "Ex dono Authoris" on the title page. With the portrait of Pepys by White after Kneller and folding accounts table, title printed in red and black, internally clean, contemporary mottled calf, A great example - A presentation copy from Pepys; royal Provenance (from the library of the future King William IV); and a large paper copy on thick paper. This issue was intended for private distribution, and instead of the imprint "printed for Ben. Griffin, and are to be sold by Sam. Keble", it reads instead "Printed anno MDCXC". This is a large paper copy, and the paper used is somewhat thicker and more substantial than that used for the ordinary copies. "Pepys had long intended to compile a naval history: the idea seems to have begun in 1664, when Coventry suggested he should write an account of the First Anglo-Dutch War. The scale of the proposed work gradually lengthened, and many books and notes were acquired with this distant prospect in view. Enforced leisure from 1679 to 1684 had allowed for further research, Evelyn providing much arcane knowledge from his own store. Pepys's renewed leisure, ample means, and reasonable health during the 1690s seemed likely to generate the great work, but it never came. The Memoires of 1690 were his only publication" (ODNB). Here the diarist looks back at the state of the Navy in 1679. Included is his proposition to the King for repairing the damage done to the Navy while Pepys was out of office for five years on account of accusations of supporting popery. Pepys supplies ideas for the improvement of administration, and a schedule of the fleet in December 1688. The Legard family has been long-established in North Yorkshire; Robert was a Naval Officer and so would have hada personal interest in the book. Wing P1449. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

A very clean and crisp copy in an excellent contemporary binding.Locke (1632-1704), considered the father of English empiricism, ìwas the first to take up the challenge of Bacon and to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe. In the past, similar enquiries had been vitiated by the human propensity to extend them beyond the range of human understanding, and to invent causes for what it cannot explain. Therefore, Lockeís first task was to ascertain ëthe original certainty and extent of human knowledgeí and, excluding ëthe physical consideration of the mind, to show how far it can comprehend the universeí. His conclusion is that though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension, it can at least be ësufficientí; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance, and can to some extent control our own destinyî (Printing and the Mind of Man).Lockeís investigation was continued by Hume and Kant. John Stuart Mill considered him to be the founder of the analytic philosophy of mind.Attig 228. Grolier, 100 English, 36. Grolier, Wither to Prior, 527. Pforzheimer 600.         Orbis Terrarum Nova et Accurata Tabula [Wall map of the World]

Finely preserved and previously unknown 4-sheet double hemisphere map of the World, intended to be displayed by a 17th Century Aristocrat. In the 17th Century, at the height of the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography, Dutch published wall maps became an important decorating statement for aristocrats and wealthy traders in Western Europe. Artists such as Jan Vermeer captured the importance of these wall maps as objects of art in a number of his most famous paintings, such as his The Art of Painting : vermeer0708.wordpress.com/the-art-of-painting/ Among the most important of the late 17th Century mapmakers was Frederick De Wit of Amsterdam. De Wit continued the tradition of remarkable wall maps by Willem Blaeu, Nicholas Visscher and others, including several wall maps of the world in 4, 8 and 12 sheets, many of which would be copied and re-issued by the great Italian mapmakers of the late 17th Century, including Stefano Scholar, Pietro Todeschi and Guiseppe Longhi. Because of the size of these maps and use as objects of art, to be displayed prominently in the homes of the wealthy and ruling elite of Europe, very few examples of these maps have survived until modern times and when such maps survive, they are most typically in poor condition or heavily restored. In modern times, such 17th Century wall maps are highly coveted: www.finebooksmagazine.com/issue/201104/auction-1.phtml The present map is an unrecorded variant of one of Frederick De Wit's multi-sheet masterpieces, published by Gerard Valk, one of the leading map publishers and engravers in Amsterdam at the end of the 17th Century. Known primarily for fine engraving and high artistic quality, Valk's work is among the finest from the latter part of the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography. The map consists of a twin hemisphere world map, together with two polar projections. Surrounding the map are personifications of the four seasons (from upper left to lower right): spring, a dancing bear breasted Persephone is garlanded with spring flowers; summer, Ceres brings in the wheat harvest; autumn, Dionysis accompanied by satyrs and cherubs, collects the grape harvest, and adorn a herm with vines; winter, represented by strong man carrying a stick, Boreas the north wind can be seen blowing, whilst cherubs gut fish. The map is based upon Frederick de Wit's terrestrial world map executed in about 1670-1680 (Shirley 451). This magnificent map must have been published between 1690 and 1700, as the imprint which appears on the pedestal of the garlanded herm in the lower left plainly gives the place as 'op d'Dam inde Wackeren hont.' Gerard Valck and his family moved into this house (where the Hondius family had previously lived) in about 1690. A latest possible date of approximately 1700 is provided by a variant of this map which includes the name of Leonardus, Gerard's son, and, although smaller, contains new details such as the supposed Mer Glaciale in northernmost America (Shirley 638). Both this later map, an earlier Valck world map (Shirley 531 & 532, giving incorrect date of c.1686). Rodney Shirley opined that Valck's world maps were based on Jaillot's influential Mappe-Monde of 1674, but in fact all three bear a much closer relationship to de Wit's map. The present map shares many of de Wit's cartographic elements, particularly in the polar projections; but there are also numerous differences, some partly explained by this Valck map being on a larger scale than the original de Wit map, allowing greater detail and decoration. For instance, the gap between the words 'America' and 'Meridio' in Brazil are now decoratively filled with a native village and a battle scene; in other areas, such as the outline of the coast of New Zealand, the toponyms are engraved quite differently. The north-eastern coastline of Asia in the present work also bears a closer resemblance to the 1666 world map of Jan van Loon (Shirley 439). The present example is a remarkable survival, especially in such magnificient condition. The condition is, without question, the finest we have ever seen for a multi-sheet wall map of the 17th Century. C.f. Shirely 451 for De Wit example.

America Settentrionale colle nuove scoperte fin all' anno 1688

      V. M. Coronelli, Venice 1690 - Copper-engraved map, on two joined sheets, in excellent condition. A superlative impression of Coronelli's important and innovative map, and a foundation map for any serious collection of the cartography of North America Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, a Venetian scholar and Minorite Friar, became one of the most celebrated map and globe makers of his era. Throughout his industrious life he produced more than one-hundred terrestrial and celestial globes, several hundred maps, and a wealth of cartographic publications. In 1683, he completed the Marly Globes for Louis XIV, the largest and most magnificent globes ever made. In 1684 he founded the Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, the first geographical society, and was appointed Cosmographer of the Republic of Venice. He published two atlases, the Atlante Veneto (Venice, 1691) and the Isolario (1696-98), and compiled the first encyclopaedia to be arranged alphabetically. This magnificent map of North America, published in the Atlante Veneto , is widely considered to be one of Coronelli's finest maps, and is cartographically similar to the scene depicted on his famous globe of 1688. Printed initially on two separate sheets, the present example has been carefully joined to form a wonderful unified image. The map is beautifully preserved in its uncoloured state, as originally intended. Artistically, it is a masterpiece of late Baroque engraving. Its title cartouche, featuring scenes of gods blessing the era of European expansion evince the sumptuous style of Coronelli's Venice. Finely engraved scenes of native Americans and real or imagined beasts adorn the land and seas. Apart from displaying a fine aesthetic sense, Coronelli has rendered the continent with far greater geographical detail than his contemporaries, having benefited enormously from his favour at the French court and his publishing partnership with Paris cartographer Jean-Baptiste Nolin. The Great Lakes are drawn with unrivalled accuracy, drawing on information gleaned in 1673 by the Quebecois explorer Louis Jolliet, and his traveling companion, the French-born Jesuit Jacques Marquette. The Mississippi basin is rendered with great detail, reflecting French discoveries, most notably those by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle on his first expedition of 1679-82. This map depicts La Salle's dramatic misplacement of the mouth of the Mississippi 600 miles to the west of its true location. Importantly, it is on the western portion of the map where Coronelli has added the most significant amount of new information, drawn mostly from a highly important manuscript map by Diego Dionisio de Peñalosa Briceño y Berdugo, which included numerous previously unrecorded place names and divided the Rio Grande into the Rio Norte and the Rio Bravo in the south. The manuscript map was probably originally prepared by Peñalosa between 1671 and 1687 as part of his attempts to interest the French King Louis XIV in his plans to mount an military expedition against New Spain. The most prominent geographical detail of the map is California's appearance as a massive island, this map being one of the best renderings of this beloved misconception. The precise geographical details are enlivened by the presence of numerous captions noting discoveries or details of the terrain.         La Primera Parte Del Nuevo Gran Espejo Maritimo, Alumbrando las Costas Maritimas de la Navigacion de la India Occidental, Empecando de la Costa de Espana Hasta el Rio de Amazonas.

Jacob Robijn,, Amsterdam, 1690 - Unrecorded Spanish edition of the First Sea Atlas of America Folio (450 by 280mm), title, privilege, [2]p. description of the earth, 67pp., 34 engraved charts (all double-page apart from the chart of Catalina), seventeenth century Spanish pig skin. One of the most important maritime atlases of the Dutch Golden Age. Roggeveen's work is the first maritime atlas of the American coasts, and was based largely on the closely guarded collection of mostly Iberian manuscript nautical charts owned by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and West India Company (WIC). It covers what it calls the West Indies, a term then interpreted much more broadly than today, including not only the entire Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and Central America, but also part of South America and the entire east coast of what is now the United States and southern Canada. Arent Roggeveen (c.1628-1779) was born in Delfshaven, and came to Middelburg as a teacher in 1658. Familiar with mathematics and land-surveying and interested in astronomy, he quickly learned the arts of navigation. Middelburg boasted one of the most important chambers of both the VOC and WIC, therefore many of Roggeveen's students worked in the two companies. Through these connections he apparently gained access to the large collection of mostly Iberian manuscript sea charts that the companies had captured, copied by espionage, or commissioned (some American place names in Roggeveen's atlas still retain their Spanish forms). This collection had been closely guarded as a matter of national security during the Dutch war of independence from Spain. Even after 1648 it was still considered sensitive material, as it gave the Dutch merchants of the VOC and WIC an important commercial advantage. While some atlases largely copied maps from their predecessors, Roggeveen could therefore draw on this cartographic treasure trove to produce more accurate and more detailed sea charts than had ever been published before. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. Robijn went on to republish the second edition in 1689, with a third edition appearing in 1698. As well as Dutch the pilot also appeared with English, French, and - as with the present edition - Spanish text. We are unable to trace an institutional example of this edition. Koeman records six institutional examples of the 1680 Spanish edition. The charts and text would appear to be unchanged from the 1680 edition: with all the charts in their first state; the chart of Catalina is in its proof state; chart No. 7 bears revision to Curaçao plate; whilst the chart of Curaçao [No.7 1/2] bears no number. The only revision to the 1680 edition is the inclusion of a new title-page and privilege in which Roggeveen's name has been omitted and Jacob Robijn inserted in its place. c.f.       c1690]., [Spain, 1690 - A mariner's chest decorated with manuscript maps on vellum Wooden chest, clad in vellum manuscript maps, with wrought iron handles, rivets, lock and clasp. A very unusual piece of cartographic history. It was common for seafarers to have sturdy wooden chests for storage whilst on a voyage, but the owner of this chest chose to have it covered it with manuscript maps drawn on vellum, possibly by their own hand, with the decorative ironwork fitted on top. The lid is covered with a map of North and Central America, with the Darien Isthmus labelled to the south, and decorated with an elaborate compass rose and title cartouche supported by figures of Native Americans. The map on the front is decorated with a title cartouche showing a sea god. The sides are covered with maps of the East and West Indies, dotted with ships. It is remarkable that the maps have survived given the treatment they would have encountered at sea. 740 by 320 by 420mm (29.25 by 12.5 by 16.5 inches).

Amsterdam, Pieter Blaeu, and Joan Blaeu 1690 - (engraved titlepage) n.p., (engraved titlepage) n.p. Contemporary Tortoiseshell binding with 2 silver clasps and 4 silver hinges, gilt-edged and gauffred text block, 8° (Some small pieces chipped off the binding. Dutch church book in the French language containing the Geneva version of the New Testament, followed by the Psalms -with musical notation- of Clement Marot en Theodorus Beza, and the Forms. Attractive binding bound in black with ochre coloured flamed tortoiseshell with silver double clasp and 4 hinges. The clasps have straight catches but both the hasps and joints on the spine have an identically cut out pattern. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became populair in the 17th and 18th century and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine and rarity. -the name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. Fewer than 4 percent of the luxury bindings made in the Netherlands in the 18th century was covered in materials other than leather and vellum. These bindings were regarded as richer and were more expensive. This is considered even more for tortoise shells since the shells were not imported in large amounts, due to this the material remained expensive and only available for the rich.) (gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p., (gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p. Dijstelberge, P. (2011).
