        A Treatise of Monarchy

London: Richard Baldwin, 1689 Book. Very Good+. Hardcover. 3rd Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The owners notes and my observation agree with Wing number H3783. This 73 page pamphlet has been placed inside hard red cloth boards, with a gilt lettered black spine label. The boards measure 8'' X 6 1/2'', The text measures 7 3/4'' X 6'' fore-edge to gutter. Collation is primarily quarto. After the restored endsheet (no preliminary sheets appear) is the title page. There is a small penned circled D at the upper right corner. Opposite this in the gutter margin is pencilled "edn., Wing number and placements." Verso title blank, followed by a 2 page TOC. Page 1 through 73 appear next followed by another blank beige replacement endsheet. The text has minimal foxing and two characteristics worth noting. The paper is a bit thinner then customary for the era so the read-thru is more pronounced. Additionally, the top edge is in places 3/8 of an inch to a scant 1/8 of an inch from the top edge of the sheets. Hunton's name does not appear in the text, authorship is given as ''Done by an earnest desirer of his country's peace.'' Printing ''London: printed for, and sold by Richard Baldwin in the old Baily. MDCLXXXIX.'' The grade above maybe thought of as a compromise between the newish boards and the aged text..

"Having joined the East India Company as a chaplain, Ovington was assigned to the Company's vessel Benjamin for a voyage to the East Indies in 1689. Ovington stopped briefly in Bombay and then settled at Surat for two and a half years. His narrative describes Bombay as a sink of debauchery filled with whores and drunkards. Of Surat Ovington commented at length of the Mughal influence, on religious and cultural characteristics of the Hindus and Parsees, and the nature of the fakeer or Mohammedan religious mendicant. In passing Ovington described and defended the drinking of tea for which he was later attacked by Alexander Hamilton. Of the greatest interest, however, is Ovington's outline of the organization and operation of the English factory at Surat. Of the early narratives, Ovington's possesses greater interest and far wittier prose". (Riddick)  These two volumes, respectively 323 pp and 318 pp, comprise the first French translation from the original English of 1698. Both volumes retain their original calf bindings with tooled and gilt spines, marbled endpapers, and red-stained text block edges.  The bindings show wear and Volume I shows loss at the spine ends, but the bindings are intact and unrestored.  The contents are remarkably clean, crisp, and bright with no spotting.

[Title in Greek.] Cebetis Thebani Tabula, Græce & Latine, multis in locis restituta ex MSS. codicibus, unde etiam Græca in fine reposita ab Jacobo Gronovio, cuius accedunt notæ & emendationes

Amsterdam: apud Henricum Westenium 1689 First edition as edited by the Dutch scholar Jakob Gronovius. This famous allegory of the life of man, known as "Pinax" or the "Table" of Cebes and long popular as a school text, was originally ascribed to a Pythagorean follower of Socrates; it is now assigned to a later date, as it contains element of the Stoic philosophy of the Roman empire. This edition by Gronovius, making use of several additional manuscripts, was the best critical text yet produced. Contemporary calf, panelled in blind, brown morocco label. . Small octavo. Parallel Greek and Latin texts. The Latin translation by Wolf was first opubkished in 1560. Joints a bit rubbed. Ink signature on the front flyleaf of Robert Raymond, dated 1692 (see DNB); Raymond was then a student at Christ's College, Cambridge, and went on to become Lord Chief Justice. A very good copy of an uncommon book. Gronovius was an industrious classicist, who produced a massive thesaurus of Greek antiquities in thirteen folio volumes (1687-1702), and became involved in a dispute with Bentley. Dibdin quotes Harwood as describing his edition of Cebes as "very correct and beautiful.

Titelsidan lite solkig. Även sporadiska dammfläckar i övre marginalen.
