Tenmon Zukai (Illustrated Explanation of Astronomy)

1689. JAPANESE ASTRONOMY. Tenmon Zukai (Illustrated Explanation of Astronomy). By Tsunenori Iguchi. Six volumes. 66; 74; 62; 62; 108; 65 pp. Printed on rice paper Japanese style on folded sheets. Illustrated with 62 woodcuts, of which 23 contain contemporary hand-colouring, and 4 are double-spread images. 8vo., 227 x 162 mm, bound in original Japanese dark blue sewn wrappers and paper labels. Preserved in a modern shitzu case. Osaka: Itanya Mohee, 1689. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of the first astronomical book published in Japan. This seventeenth-century Japanese scientific book is a highlight of aesthetic book-design; the star charts and the hand-coloured celestial spheres are impressive. "The Tenmon zukai is the first astronomical book published in Japan. Although all five volumes mention the study of mathematical astronomy, the first volume has circular star maps and the second has figures of the lunar lodges. Most of the stars are shown as black circles, but those of the lunar lodges and other notable stars in the circular star map are shown as white circles, as are the determinative stars in the figures of the lunar lodges" (Kazuhiko Miyajima, Japanese Celestial Cartography before the Meiji Period, p. 590). One curious woodcut is the double-spread illustration of a terrestrial hemisphere, providing a mid-seventeenth-century mapping of Japan, the China coast, the East Indies, New Guinea and part of Alaska. There are a number of geocentric diagrams of the earth, sun, moon, planets and stars, diagrams of solar and lunar eclipses and of the phases of the moon. There is also a very fine image of an armillary sphere with legs in the form of dragons. Iguchi Tsunenori (active 1689-1698) was a pupil of Shibukawa Harumi (1639-1716), "one of the greatest astronomers to have lived in Japan…. Shibukawa is particularly known for his calendrical system, adopted in 1684 and named the Jokyo calendar after the reign title (1684-88). Replacing the Senmyo (Chinese Xuanming) calendar, the Jokyo calendar is notable because, unlike previous Japanese calendars that relied completely on Chinese theory, it was compiled from Shibukawa's own systematic astronomical observations. It was the first in Japan to be so produced, and it was widely adopted" (Ibid p. 588). OCLC lists 5 copies, all in America: Stanford, Harvard, Univ. of Oregon, Burndy Library - Washington DC, and Univ. of Washington. PROVENANCE: Tan Ro Sei Sho ?, this signature appears on outside cover of each volume. There are substantial annotations in Japanese kanji in margins throughout the work. See: Kazuhiko Miyajima article: "Japanese Celestial Cartography" in Harley & Woodward, History of Cartography II, 579-603 pp.

Dialogues sur les affaires du temps, ou les pasquinades

Original editions. Editions elzéviriennes the Sphere. Full period calf, spine tooled raised. Book consists of 5 texts in the first edition together in one volume: The Chamber of Accounts of Innocent XI (5 ° dialogue), The Dream of Pasquin or prom Europe (2 dialogue), The Feast of Guillemot '4 No dialogue), Stone political button, the Diet of Augsburg (9th dialogue). Dialogues appeared anonymously between "1688 and 1691 are pasquinades satirical dialogues between two characters arlequinesques Pasquin and Marsorio. Pasquin is leading the subject, his sidekick asking questions. The whole is treated with due lightness, easily read, the humor and satire are often irresistible. These dialogues were published separately, and each contain a title page, with a publisher often fanciful name and a different city, it goes without saying that there is only one editor really. It was published 19 dialogues, it is naturally very rare to see together. The subjects of each dialogue are different and are, as the title indicates, the main business of the time, and the situation of European countries. Only the first dialogue of the book: the bedroom Innocent XI accounts, do not put in a situation both regular characters, because it is a dialogue between the Pope and Saint-Pierre, the dialogue is nevertheless the fifth pasquinades dialogue. French writer often worn with pamphlets and satire, Eustache le Noble (1643-1711), Baron de Saint-Georges and Tenelière, was imprisoned in the Conciergerie for fraudulent acts, escaped, then was caught again and banished of France for 9 years, he died poor when he was rich. All these dialogues are quite rare and not easily found. A hitch with a bit missing. Good copy. Elzevir Leyde 1689 petit in 12 (14,8x9cm) 48pp. (1bc)., 46pp. (1bc)., 41pp. (1bc)., 43pp. (1bc). 46pp.

Rousseurs. Bon exemplaire. Aucun exemplaire au NUC. Palau, 325789.

A Letter concerning Toleration: Humbly Submitted, &c

London: for Awnsham Churchill,, 1689. Quarto (214 × 152 mm). A very good copy in recent calf-backed marbled boards, spine decorated and lettered gilt, to style, uncut edges just a little stained in places. Two short tears, one at foot of title, the other at head of last leaf, both neatly closed. Rare first edition in English of Locke's first separately published work, his Letter on Toleration, in which he distinguishes exactly the business of civil government from that of religion. The work was originally published in Latin in 1689, and is here translated by William Popple, a Unitarian merchant, "possibly with Locke's cooperation" (Yolton.) "In winter 1685?-6 Locke interrupted his labours on the Essay [on human understanding] to write another, shorter work. Louis XIV had revoked the edict of Nantes in October, removing the last remnants of toleration for the French protestants. The Epistola de tolerantia was written after Locke returned from Cleves about the beginning of November. It was addressed to Limborch, who kept the manuscript and subsequently arranged for it to be printed. The Latin text was published anonymously at Gouda in April 1689, two months after Locke had returned to England. The Epistola develops further the theory of toleration already put forward in the Essay Concerning Toleration of 1667 [written in 1667, but first published in 1876]. Locke advocated the complete separation of church and state: states exist only to preserve their members' civil goods; churches are purely voluntary societies which are allowed to exercise discipline over their members, but which anyone can leave at any time without incurring any civil disabilities. Complete toleration should be given to every religious body whose doctrines are neither incompatible with civil society nor require their adherents to give allegiance to a foreign prince" (ODNB).

An Historical and Political Discourse of the Law and Government of England, from the First Times to the End of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth. With a Vindication of the Ancient Way of Parliaments in England

London: Printed for John Starkey, 1689 Book. Very Good. Leather Bound. 2nd Edition. [20] 203 [5] 168, 167-188 [6] Admiral George Byng's copy of John Selden's Laws and Government of England in the 1689 reissue of the 1682 edition. This edition has an additional title page and preliminary advertisement leaf. The ownership signature of George Byng, Viscount Torrington appears on the front pastedown with his 'Tuebor' armorial book plate and opposite his shelf mark. There are Victorian ownership signatures below relating to the Cary family. The binding is in handsome contemporary panelled calf with relaid spine, rubbing to the boards but sound. Internally the book is complete as called for with a couple of marks to the additional title page. Byng's ownership of this volume is particularly interesting in the light of his political role in delivering to William of Orange the support of the navy during the revolution of a year earlier. Indeed the edition of 1682 was suppressed until the change of regime was complete. R16514 Byng's fourth son, John Byng, who followed in his father's footsteps in the navy suffered the ignominy of court martial and execution.         Hibernia Anglicana: or, the History of Ireland From the Conquest thereof by the English, To this Present Time With An Introductory Discourse touching the Ancient State of that Kingdom; and a New and Exact Map of the same Parts I and II

LONDON: Printed by H Clark, for Joseph Watts at the Angel is St Paul's Church-Yard, 1689 A fair copy of this scarce work, in contemporary full leather binding with 2 frontispieces and folding map; 2 parts bound in one. Written by Sir Richard Cox (1650-1733), an Irish lawyer and judge, who was Lord Chancellor of Ireland 1703-7, and Lord Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench for Ireland 1711-1714. His writing takes a very English (and politically expedient) view of Ireland: that Ireland was 'rescued' from barbarity by the English conquest. The binding preserves the contemporary panelled calf boards and there is a gilt stamped 'lion rampant with bend' armorial device to the front board and the entwined initials AV on the back board. The spine is newer with raised bands and a gilt title label. The boards have repaired corners and the whole binding is in good sound condition. The endpapers are new and with a little marking. Contents: endorsement; frontispiece of William and Mary; title page for 1869; dedication 5 pp; To the Reader 12 pp; An Apparatus or Introductory Discourse 28 pp; folding map; text 456 pp; Index 4 pp; errata; license; portrait of William and Mary; title page dated 1690 with red and black inks; Dedication 4 pp; To the Reader 18 pp; An Apparatus 15 pp; text James I pp 1-206; text Charles II pp 1-72 (pagination restarts 3 times in book 2); Letter to the Author pp 1-20; Appendices I-XLIX pp 1-211; Finis; Errata 1p; publisher's advert 1 p; Table of the 'most material passages' and table to the appendix 4 pp. The contents have some blotchy marking - particularly in book I, where a small section (affecting pp 29-32) has also been burnt out of the top margin - removing part of the header and around a word of text on 2 pages. The folding map has a small area of reinforcement. There is occasional scholarly pencil annotation. There is a repaired tear to page 402 and a corner missing from p 370, not affecting text. There is some mispagination - page numbers 367 and 368 are repeated and the numbering jumps from 370-381, but no text appears missing or repeated. Please enquire if you wish to see additional images of this work.

"The warming-pan scandal", so-called after the alleged method that was used to smuggle the false child into the Queen's bedchamber (the route being shown on the map in this work), became a cause celebré for all the King's Protestant opponents.         Hibernia Anglicana or The History of Ireland

Joseph Watts, London 1689 - Two folio volumes, ex-library, 1689-90. Lovely contemporary 1/2 leather binding with marbled boards. Red spine labels, lettered in gilt with gilt rules and date at the foot. Fleur-de-lis ornaments in compartments. Title page and folding map embossed. Some scattered foxing throughout, though the map remains extremely clean and bright. The large fold-out map of Ireland by Sir William Petty was considered an amazing improvement when it was first issued in 1685. See Tooley. Engraved frontispiece of William and Mary by R. White. This copy was held in a research library and looks to have rarely been handled. The marks are subtle and few. This two volume set is now extremely handsome and, of course, quite scarce. Sir Richard Cox, 1650-1733, was created Chancellor of Ireland in 1703. The History of Ireland was compiled chiefly from the accounts of Sir John Temple and Dr. Borlase.
