Ars Vitraria Experimentalis, oder, Vollkommene Glasmacher-Kunst

1689. KUNCKEL, Johannes.Ars Vitraria Experimentalis, oder, Vollkommene Glasmacher-Kunst.Frankfurt-Leipzig; Nuremberg: Christoph Riegels, 1689.Two parts in one.Second edition, enlarged, of this fundamental treatise on the manufacture of glass, with fine engraved portrait frontispiece, additional engraved title page, 20 full-page engravings of processes and seven in-text woodcuts of tools. In around 1667, Johannes Kunckel was serving as chemist to Johann Georg II, elector of Saxony, who put him in charge of the royal laboratory at Dresden. Here he learned the chemistry of glass manufacture. Twelve years later he became director of the laboratory and glass works of Brandenburg, where he discovered a way to make artificial ruby red glass by incorporating purple of Cassius. First published in 1679, his classic treatise on glass-making contains the first translation into German of Antonio Neri?'s L?'Arte Vetraria (1612), as well as a special section devoted to making colored glass— including his innovative recipe for ruby glass. Kunckel?'s work was relied upon for at least a century and is historically valuable for its illustrations, ?"the most interesting of which shows a glass-blower?'s lamp worked by pedal bellows?" (Norman). With a separate title for Part II at page [329]. Text in German.See Norman 1244. Duveen, 328.Text and plates only slightly embrowned, one tiny worm hole to margins of first few gatherings only. A very desirable copy in near-fine condition.

Lisbon, Miguel Deslandes, 1689. - Small woodcut floral vignette on title-page. Woodcut initials. Woodcut headpiece on recto of second preliminary leaf; typographical headpiece on recto of following leaf. Large woodcut tailpiece on p. 386. (4 ll.), 389 pp. 4°, contemporary stiff vellum, fore-edge cover extensions, spine with vertical title in manuscript, text block edges rouged. Very small blank piece torn away in upper corner of title-page; neat repairs to upper blank margins of a few leaves; occasional slight marginal stains. Overall in fine condition. ---- FIRST EDITION of this tribute to the Franciscan order. In the course of his treatise the author frequently refers to specific situations in the "Estado da Índia" (i.e. all areas of Portuguese influence in East Africa and Asia), missionary activities, and monks who worked primarily in the East, many of whom were known to the author personally. He also discusses who can become a novice of the order - descendants of Jews, Moors and heretics are excluded, but there is mention of special conditions existing in India, and of exceptions which can be made there for those with some native ancestry (pp. 168?78). According to Porbase, there is a variant issue, in which the final license is dated 18 May 1689. In our copy, there is indeed a license of this date on the verso of the final preliminary leaf, followed by:Visto estar conforme com seu Original, póde correr.

Leyde: Elzevir, 1689. Fine. Elzevir, Leyde 1689, petit in 12 (14,8x9cm), 48pp. (1bc)., 46pp. (1bc)., 41pp. (1bc)., 43pp. (1bc). 46pp., relié. - first editions. Editions elzéviriennes the Sphere. Full contemporary calf, spine tooled raised. Book consists of 5 texts in the first edition together in one volume: The Chamber of Accounts of Innocent XI (5 ° dialogue), The Dream of Pasquin or prom Europe (2 dialogue), The Feast of Guillemot '4 No dialogue), Stone political button, the Diet of Augsburg (9th dialogue). Dialogues appeared anonymously between "1688 and 1691 are pasquinades satirical dialogues between two characters arlequinesques Pasquin and Marsorio. Pasquin is leading the subject, his sidekick asking questions. The whole is treated with due lightness, easily read, the humor and satire are often irresistible. These dialogues were published separately, and each contain a title page, with a publisher often fanciful name and a different city, it goes without saying that there is only one editor really. It was published 19 dialogues, it is naturally very rare to see together. The subjects of each dialogue are different and are, as the title indicates, the main business of the time, and the situation of European countries. Only the first dialogue of the book: the bedroom Innocent XI accounts, do not put in a situation both regular characters, because it is a dialogue between the Pope and Saint-Pierre, the dialogue is nevertheless the fifth pasquinades dialogue. French writer often worn with pamphlets and satire, Eustache le Noble (1643-1711), Baron de Saint-Georges and Tenelière, was imprisoned in the Conciergerie for fraudulent acts, escaped, then was caught again and banished of France for 9 years, he died poor when he was rich. All these dialogues are quite rare and not easily found. A hitch with a bit missing. Good copy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Editions originales. Bon exemplaire.

Anissonios, Joannem Posuel, et Claudium Rigaud, Lugduni 1689 - [22], 676p, [30], 598p, 687p, Index volume. 18th century polished calf with gilt ruled boards and spine decorated in blind with gilt foredge. An edition which according to Moss p343-344 did not carry much merit. Gibbon stated apparently that the Notes to the Fasti were below criticism which is a rather harsh comment. Ebert #15369 points out that it is one of the rarer editions in Usum Delphini. Schweiger p631. FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE EARL OF MALMESBURY with his monogram on the top of the spine. Some light foxing throughout and a rather crude repair to the front hinge to volume 2. All other hinges are in very good condition with only nominal cracks.

These entries describe each variety carefully and are full of observations on their particular qualities and special requirements, opinions as to their value and beauty, and occasional reference to the novelty or age of a particular variety.

/ Four 12o volumes (16,7 x 10,3 cm), fawn speckled calf, spine tooled raised on five bands, red morocco label, piece of arms between the bands ("alérions"), triple fillet border on covers, central coat of arms, fillet on turns - in, red sprinkled edges (contemporary binding). Portrait of the author engraved by P. Chenu. First edition of the works of Charles - François Pannard, or Panard, (Courville - sur - Eure 1689 - Paris 1765), french prolific writer, poet, chansonnier, dramatist, and goguette writer. Considered as one of the propagators of vaudeville and song in France. Marmontel gave him the name "La Fontaine of vaudeville". Pannard, just like Jean de La Fontaine, didn't care about his financial situation ; he lived and died a poor man. He wrote more than 80 plays, which more famous are : Le Tour de Carnaval, Les Acteurs déplacés, Les Fêtes sincères, Le Fleuve Scamandre, Zéphir et Fleurette (Firmin Didot Frères, Nouvelle biographie générale, 39, 125). Humane Prudence,or the Art by which a Man may Raise Himself & Fortune to Grandeur.... The Fifth Edition: Very much enlarged, divers new Sections added, and the whole Corrected, by the Author

London: Printed by J. Rawlins, for R. Sare, 1689. 12mo, contemporary full calf, blind-ruled. [iv], 359, [1 (ads)] pp. Covers thoroughly rubbed, tears to three leaves (with partial loss of a few letters at E12 & I6), but generally clean and sturdy. Fifth Edition (the first in 1680). One would not expect a book that passed through at least thirteen editions between 1680 and 1730, that was first printed in America at Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1806, and that was reprinted as recently as 1897, to have lapsed into utter oblivion. But, while the suave epigrams of Marcus Aurelius and Balthasar Gracian y Morales seem never to go out of print, the homely maxims and anecdotes of William De Britaine are forgotten. The author is overlooked by DNB, EB, and all other general biographical compendia; while his book is an outcast from NCBEL, Lowndes, etc. Perhaps the cause is the general mediocrity of his philosophy; perhaps it is the uncertainty as to whether to list him under 'D' or 'B'(we follow BMC); or perhaps the thought police have condemned him for including such sallies as the following: "A Woman is a Book, and often found / To prove, far better in the Sheets than Bound." -

Groningen, Pieman, 1689.In - folio piccolo. Second issue of the first edition of a very rare work on alchemy. "The fact that the title leaf bears a different watermark from the rest of the book suggests that it is a cancelled leaf, the whole being simply a reissue of unsold sheets of the 1686 edition together with two leaves of errata. In other words this is not a new edition but the second issue of the first edition" (Mellon Coll. 142). With an engr. allegorical frontispiece, 13 engr. plates with allegorical illustrations, and 4 (of 5) engr. plates with geometrical figures. Some light browning and occasional foxing.         Tenmon Zukai (Illustrated Explanation of Astronomy)

1689. JAPANESE ASTRONOMY. Tenmon Zukai (Illustrated Explanation of Astronomy). By Tsunenori Iguchi. Six volumes. 66; 74; 62; 62; 108; 65 pp. Printed on rice paper Japanese style on folded sheets. Illustrated with 62 woodcuts, of which 23 contain contemporary hand-colouring, and 4 are double-spread images. 8vo., 227 x 162 mm, bound in original Japanese dark blue sewn wrappers and paper labels. Preserved in a modern shitzu case. Osaka: Itanya Mohee, 1689. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of the first astronomical book published in Japan. This seventeenth-century Japanese scientific book is a highlight of aesthetic book-design; the star charts and the hand-coloured celestial spheres are impressive. "The Tenmon zukai is the first astronomical book published in Japan. Although all five volumes mention the study of mathematical astronomy, the first volume has circular star maps and the second has figures of the lunar lodges. Most of the stars are shown as black circles, but those of the lunar lodges and other notable stars in the circular star map are shown as white circles, as are the determinative stars in the figures of the lunar lodges" (Kazuhiko Miyajima, Japanese Celestial Cartography before the Meiji Period, p. 590). One curious woodcut is the double-spread illustration of a terrestrial hemisphere, providing a mid-seventeenth-century mapping of Japan, the China coast, the East Indies, New Guinea and part of Alaska. There are a number of geocentric diagrams of the earth, sun, moon, planets and stars, diagrams of solar and lunar eclipses and of the phases of the moon. There is also a very fine image of an armillary sphere with legs in the form of dragons. Iguchi Tsunenori (active 1689-1698) was a pupil of Shibukawa Harumi (1639-1716), "one of the greatest astronomers to have lived in Japan…. Shibukawa is particularly known for his calendrical system, adopted in 1684 and named the Jokyo calendar after the reign title (1684-88). Replacing the Senmyo (Chinese Xuanming) calendar, the Jokyo calendar is notable because, unlike previous Japanese calendars that relied completely on Chinese theory, it was compiled from Shibukawa's own systematic astronomical observations. It was the first in Japan to be so produced, and it was widely adopted" (Ibid p. 588). OCLC lists 5 copies, all in America: Stanford, Harvard, Univ. of Oregon, Burndy Library - Washington DC, and Univ. of Washington. PROVENANCE: Tan Ro Sei Sho ?, this signature appears on outside cover of each volume. There are substantial annotations in Japanese kanji in margins throughout the work.

Original editions. Editions elzéviriennes the Sphere. Full period calf, spine tooled raised. Good copy. Elzevir Leyde 1689 petit in 12 (14,8x9cm) 48pp. (1bc)., 46pp. (1bc)., 41pp. (1bc)., 43pp. (1bc). 46pp. Un Vol. relié
