      - Kupferstich v. Romeyn de Hooghe, 1689, 34 x 38,5 Muller 2773; Landwehr, Romeyn de Hooghe the etcher Nr. 225. - Flugblatt. A Dutch broadside on the arrival in England of William of Orange, with an etching formerly attributed to de Hooghe. In the centre stands James II (1) alarmed at the sight of William and his forces; he turns towards Louis XIV who takes James's right hand while turning to point with his sword, in his left hand, towards Emperor Leopold and his generals (4) on the left-hand side of the scene. In the foreground, seated on the ground is Cardinal Furstenberg (5) recoiling in horror at the Emperor. Behind him is Father Petre (6) holding a volume of papers, a monk at his side holding a sword and flaming gallows, addresses two English peers (7) who offer their loyalty to James if he will maintain the former laws, including the Test Act; in the foreground are further documents and a chest and bags of money. On the right, Father Petre appears again, carrying the Prince of Wales who holds a doll in the form of a jester; the miller's wife (the child's alleged mother), bare-breasted, holds in one hand a bag of money while she makes a gesture of secrecy towards Petre; two monks and two Quakers look on. Behind them, William III and his generals oversee the landing of the Dutch forces. On the left, behind the Emperor, is a triumphal arch under which are Turkish heads on pikes; the arch is decorated with three medallions illustrating a mountain giving birth to a mouse, the fall Phaeton, and Jesuits surrounding a globe fallen from heaven, and a series of reliefs of battles, including Philippsburg and Kaiserslautern. - Engraved verses, inscriptions and numbering 1-6, and with letterpess verses, including legend, in two columns.         AN ACCOUNT OF THE LATE REVOLUTION IN NEW-ENGLAND. TOGETHER WITH THE DECLARATION OF THE GENTLEMEN, MERCHANTS, AND INHABITANTS OF BOSTON, AND THE COUNTRY ADJACENT. APRIL 18, 1689

London, 1689. Small quarto. 20th-century brown morocco, spine gilt. Modern bookplate of Frederick B. Adams, Jr. on front pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. A most important work for the history of New England. Sir Edmund Andros, the governor of Massachusetts appointed by Charles II, was overthrown in the spring of 1689 because of his harsh and overbearing rule. This pamphlet explains the position of those who removed him from power and their protestations of loyalty to the British Crown. Following Byfield's text is a printing of Increase Mather's THE DECLARATION OF THE GENTLEMEN..., on pages 7-19. Page 20 prints a letter to Sir Edmund Andros, royal governor of the Dominion of New England, written and signed in type by prominent Boston citizens on April 18, 1689, demanding the surrender of the government. Scarce.

De Jure Gladii Tractatus et de Toparchis qui Exercent id in Dioecesi..

1689. Canon Law and Capital Punishment Matthaeus, Antonius (III) [1635-1710]. De Jure Gladii Tractatus et de Toparchis qui Exercent id in Dioecesi Ultrajectina. Leiden: Sumptu Auctoris Excudit Johannes Kellenaar, 1689. Quarto (8-1/2" x 7"). Contemporary vellum, fragment of title label to spine, edges rouged. Some soiling, spine somewhat darkened, front joint just starting at head, corners bumped, 3-1/2" x 9" piece of vellum excised from front board. Large arms of the Curia of the Holy Roman Empire to title page. Some toning, light browning in places. Faint dampstaining to head of first quarter of text block, internally clean. $500. * Only edition. The son and grandson of distinguished jurists of the same name, Antonius Matthaeus III was a professor of law at the University of Utrecht and later its rector. De Jure Gladii is a treatise on capital crimes in canon law as applied to the diocese of Utrecht. It also addresses corporal punishment and lesser crimes. Capital punishment was complicated topic because it involved conflicts with local feudal law. (On a fundamental level, canon law forbids capital punishment, feudal law applies it to a broad spectrum of crimes.) These tensions were acute in Utrecht. Though part of the Protestant United Provinces (Dutch Republic), Utrecht was historically a Catholic center. The Church continued to be a strong presence in the seventeenth century. About 40% of the population was Catholic. This percentage was higher among elite groups. OCLC locates 4 copies in North American law libraries (Columbia, Harvard, Southern Methodist University, UC-Berkeley). Dekkers, Bibliotheca Belgica Juridica 112 (11).

TABULA EXHIBENS NOVAM FRANCIAM ET LOUISIANAM

[Nuremberg, 1689. Near fine. Matted and laid into a folding cloth box. The extremely rare German edition of Father Louis Hennepin's landmark map of North America, from his DESCRIPTION DE LA LOUISIANE...., based upon the explorations of Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette. This version of the map was issued with the 1689 Nuremberg edition of Hennepin's work, and the cartouche translated from French into Latin. As in the original, the German map shows the significant new details of the upper headwaters of the Mississippi. By removing the extraneous European continent, the German map focuses solely on North America and even tends to magnify the Great Lakes region. This map drew directly on the explorations of the French fur trader Jolliet and the Jesuit Marquette. In May, 1673 the two led an expedition from Green Bay westward, via the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, to find the upper Mississippi. Once they reached it, they travelled south based the Missouri, Ohio, and Arkansas Rivers, before turning back near present-day Natchez. On their return they used the Chicago and des Plaines Rivers to emerge on Lake Michigan at present-day Chicago. The information gathered by the explorers is the basis for the present map, rendered by Hennepin. Hennepin's map was the first to use the name Louisiana, and the Atlantic Ocean is called "Mare Canadense." "[It shows] for the first time La Louisiane, Sault de St. Antoine de Padou (on the site of present-day Minneapolis), and Lac de Pleurs [Lake of Tears], present Lake Pepin. A faint dotted line indicating the surmised course of the lower Mississippi River is approximately located" - Schwartz & Ehrenberg. This line is of particular note. As Wheat points out, La Salle and later French cartographers recorded the course of the river as progressing further west, making Hennepin's map remarkably accurate in this regard for its time. As a significant version of one of the best cartographical depictions to that date of the Great Lakes region and the upper Mississippi, it is surprising that this German edition of Hennepin's map has been overlooked by most carto-bibliographers. "An important cartographic stepping stone...[presenting] vast new knowledge" - Wheat.

The third edition of this => uncommon and significant work on the language of the Aztecs, the first having appeared in 1689 and a second in 1693. A third edition of 1716 is listed in several bibliographies, but it is a ghost: The "2" in the date of this 1726 edition is often indistinct on the title-page, causing some to read it as "1716." Vázquez, a native of Puebla, was a professor of the "Mexican language" (i.e., Nahuatl) at the Royal College of San Juan and San Pedro; his local "take" is discernable here.

[Manuscript writing book].[Germany, perhaps Rhine valley], Johannes Winand, 1689. Oblong 4to (album 22.5 x 29 cm). With 23 leaves (16 x 20.5 cm) mounted on the leaves of a mid-19th-century album, each with a beautifully executed calligraphic exercise, beginning with a decorated initial in alphabetical order (A-Z including W but lacking R and with a single letter for I/J and for U/V) and usually with the first line or lines in one or two larger hands followed by the main text in a smaller hand; most also with elaborate pen decoration and pen drawings of animals, plants or people; 4 partly in red ink, 7 partly in gold. Mid-19th-century brown half cloth.

Beautiful and elegant writing book by Johannes Winand, each leaf with a calligraphic exercise written in German (14), Dutch (4), Latin (3), French (1) or Italian (1). The leaves of the album have been numbered in pencil. Each leaf begins with a large decorated initial letter, with the 23 leaves covering the alphabet from A to Z, with a single letter for I/J and for U/V. It includes W but lacks R, which should have come between leaves 16/Q and 17/S. The main texts of most leaves are written in various gothic hands but five are in Latin hands. The initials are also mostly gothic, with 8 roman and 1 script. Some exercises take the form of letters addressed to notables, family, etc., others begin with an epithet followed by an often religious text. 11 leaves are signed J. or Jaen or Jo(h)annes Winandi, and 4 are dated 1689. The German form of his name was probably Johann Winand. He was most likely a brilliant pupil rather than a master, since we have found no reference to a writing master of that name or another writing book by him. Several people of that name were born in the Rhineland area in the years around 1670.The calligraphic texts are written in the various hands considered appropriate for the various languages: German and Dutch in gothic hands; Latin, French and Italian in Latin hands, all including both cursive and more formal hands. The calligraphy is enriched with large initials, several of which are highlighted with gold and/or red or given penwork flourishes. The texts are illustrated with pen drawings of a stork, a spider in its web, a cat with a mouse, a dragon, a squirrel, a dog, a butterfly, etc. Some relate to the texts; others are merely decorative. With a round library stamp in open areas on the first and last leaf erased, but from a Jesuit library, with the IHS and cross still visible on the last leaf. One leaf (with initial R) is probably lacking and the leaves have been cut down, generally leaving about a half centimeter margin, but occasionally just touching part of the text or illustration, and mounted on the leaves of the mid-19th-century album. The black ink has sometimes eaten through the paper, mostly in large areas of black as in a few of the initials, and there is a tear repaired across 1 leaf, but the leaves are otherwise in good condition. The gold has often not bonded well, so that some has come off, exposing the green ground underneath. A beautiful manuscript writing book, with its 23 leaves giving a complete alphabet of decorated initials except for the letter R.

Esther, tragédie tirée de l'Écriture Sainte

Denys Thierry, Paris 1689 - In-16 (87x152 mm). 8 ff. n. ch., 86 pp., 2 ff. n. ch.

ISBN or SBN Number: n/a. A second embassy to Siam was sent in March 1687, in which Tachard again took part. The embassy consisted of five warships, led by General Desfarges, and was intent on bringing the Siamese embassy home. However, apart from the reaffirmation of the 1685 commercial treaty, the mission achieved little else. The disambarkment of French troops in Bangkok led to strong nationalistic movements in Siam which ultimately resulted in the 1688 Siamese revolution in which king Narai died, the ringleader was executed, and Phra Petratcha became king. In the later part of 1689, Desfarges captured the island of Phuket in an attempt to restore French control.Part of the book touches on the Cape of Good Hope, where the governor, Simon van der Stel and the visiting commissioner of the VOIC, H A van Rheede tot Drakenstein, entertained the French party and gave them a tour of the settlement, as well as helping them with their scientific and astronomical observations. For this the governor was reprimanded later, as France was at war with the Dutch.French text., 402 [8] pp with vignettes and six folding plates. Re-bound in modern full calf with bands on spine and red label with gilt titling. NB, book looks as if it has been trimmed on the top margin but the size corresponds to the original. All edges gilt. KUNCKEL, Johannes.Ars Vitraria Experimentalis, oder, Vollkommene Glasmacher-Kunst.Frankfurt-Leipzig; Nuremberg: Christoph Riegels, 1689.Two parts in one.Second edition, enlarged, of this fundamental treatise on the manufacture of glass, with fine engraved portrait frontispiece, additional engraved title page, 20 full-page engravings of processes and seven in-text woodcuts of tools. In around 1667, Johannes Kunckel was serving as chemist to Johann Georg II, elector of Saxony, who put him in charge of the royal laboratory at Dresden. Twelve years later he became director of the laboratory and glass works of Brandenburg, where he discovered a way to make artificial ruby red glass by incorporating purple of Cassius. First published in 1679, his classic treatise on glass-making contains the first translation into German of Antonio Neri?'s L?'Arte Vetraria (1612), as well as a special section devoted to making colored glass— including his innovative recipe for ruby glass. Kunckel?'s work was relied upon for at least a century and is historically valuable for its illustrations, ?"the most interesting of which shows a glass-blower?'s lamp worked by pedal bellows?"

Leyde: Elzevir, 1689. Fine. Elzevir, Leyde 1689, petit in 12 (14,8x9cm), 48pp. (1bc)., 46pp. (1bc)., 41pp. (1bc)., 43pp. (1bc). 46pp., relié. - first editions. Book consists of 5 texts in the first edition together in one volume: The Chamber of Accounts of Innocent XI (5 ° dialogue), The Dream of Pasquin or prom Europe (2 dialogue), The Feast of Guillemot '4 No dialogue), Stone political button, the Diet of Augsburg (9th dialogue). Dialogues appeared anonymously between "1688 and 1691 are pasquinades satirical dialogues between two characters arlequinesques Pasquin and Marsorio. Pasquin is leading the subject, his sidekick asking questions. The whole is treated with due lightness, easily read, the humor and satire are often irresistible. These dialogues were published separately, and each contain a title page, with a publisher often fanciful name and a different city, it goes without saying that there is only one editor really. It was published 19 dialogues, it is naturally very rare to see together. The subjects of each dialogue are different and are, as the title indicates, the main business of the time, and the situation of European countries. Only the first dialogue of the book: the bedroom Innocent XI accounts, do not put in a situation both regular characters, because it is a dialogue between the Pope and Saint-Pierre, the dialogue is nevertheless the fifth pasquinades dialogue. French writer often worn with pamphlets and satire, Eustache le Noble (1643-1711), Baron de Saint-Georges and Tenelière, was imprisoned in the Conciergerie for fraudulent acts, escaped, then was caught again and banished of France for 9 years, he died poor when he was rich. All these dialogues are quite rare and not easily found. A hitch with a bit missing. Good copy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Bon exemplaire.

        Opera

Anissonios, Joannem Posuel, et Claudium Rigaud, Lugduni 1689 - [22], 676p, [30], 598p, 687p, Index volume. 18th century polished calf with gilt ruled boards and spine decorated in blind with gilt foredge. An edition which according to Moss p343-344 did not carry much merit. Gibbon stated apparently that the Notes to the Fasti were below criticism which is a rather harsh comment. Ebert #15369 points out that it is one of the rarer editions in Usum Delphini. Schweiger p631. FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE EARL OF MALMESBURY with his monogram on the top of the spine. Some light foxing throughout and a rather crude repair to the front hinge to volume 2. All other hinges are in very good condition with only nominal cracks.
