(Tchemerzine-Scheler, I, 859. Brunet I, 1135). Bon exemplaire, bien relie..

Collectanea historiae Samaritanae quibus praeter res geographicas, tam politia hujus gentis, quam religio et res litteraria explicantur.

Zeitz, Johann Bielck 1688 - in-8 carré, [4] ff. n. ch. Deschamps, 321-322.

        A plurality of worlds

"First edition of this translation by John Glanvill; two other English translations appeared about the same time, one by Aphra Behn, the other by Sir William Domville. & & ""Fontenelle undertook to set forth to a marquise who questioned him during evening promenades in the garden the different astronomical systems: those of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe. He spoke to her of the moon and other worlds -- Venus, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the fixed stars -- and discussed the possibility that they might be inhabited. He explained in terms that could be understood by an intelligent but untrained mind, recent discoveries in the world of the stars, displaying a strong Cartesian bent in his account ... It is the first example in French of a learned work placed within reach of an educated by non-specialized public"" (DSB). & & Small 8vo, pp. [12], 152; 2 leaves (E4 and F1) are cancels; they appear to have been printed as A7 and A8. Fourth Edition, First Folio Edition, First Illustrated Edition. FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT OF THE AUTHOR AND 12 STRIKING ENGRAVINGS, each placed at the beginning of a book of "Paradise Lost." Front pastedown with bookplate of the Wickenheiser Milton Library; front flyleaf with inscription "C. L. Fuller. From E. Coleman," with what is presumably the date scissored out. Coleridge 93b and 170; Shawcross 347 and 348; Hofer 16; "Wither to Prior" 607; Pforzheimer 720; Wing M-2147; Lowndes II, 1558. A few faint abrasions on the boards, but the original binding now carefully restored and quite appealing. Three marginal tears expertly repaired (text unaffected), final signature a bit spotted, a few minor spots elsewhere (including a small inoffensive spot on a plate), other trivial imperfections, but an excellent copy internally of a book seldom found in agreeable condition, the leaves generally quite fresh and clean and with very ample margins. This work holds a major place in the history of book illustration, and it went a long way toward establishing Milton's reputation. Its story begins with curious financial events that took place before publication. After the third printing of "Paradise Lost," Milton's widow surrendered, for £8, all further claims to a share in the profits from the work. The publication bargains continued when the printer Simmons then transferred all his rights to the poem in 1681 to Brabazon Aylmer for £25, and Aylmer subsequently sold half interests to Jacob Tonson and Richard Bentley, who together produced our sumptuous fourth printing of 1688, the first edition to appear in folio format and the first with illustrations. Most of the plates here were designed by the celebrated John Baptist Medina (1659-1710), a painter of Spanish origin who made his career in England and Scotland and who was deeply influenced by the works of Rubens. The present illustrations are composed with sophistication and artistry on multiple levels. All but two of the 13 plates were engraved by Michael Burghers, a Dutch-born artist who worked mainly in Oxford. Hodnett says in his "Five Centuries of Book Illustration" that the 1688 Tonson Milton is "the earliest serious effort to illustrate an important work of English poetry," and in his work on Francis Barlow, he says our book is "the only major English literary work with important engraved illustrations in the 17th century." John Harthan, in "The Illustrated Book," says that the plate facing the opening of the text is "one of the most forceful of English 17th century illustrations." The book was important in other ways, too: it was one of the first to be financed through subscription, bearing the names of more than 500 subscribers, including Dryden and Sir Paul Rycaut. And our strikingly illustrated--and consequently popular--folio printing went a long way toward helping to establish the reputation of Milton, whose "Paradise Lost" was relatively unknown when Tonson issued his edition and whose poem then appeared in more than 100 editions during the 18th century (more than twice the number of editions of Shakespeare's plays). The 1688 "Paradise Lost" often appears in the marketplace by itself, but the present volume also contains "Paradise Regain'd" and "Samson Agonistes," both dated 1688.

        Plan de la Ville d'Aath

The Hague: Anna Beek. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 15 x 18". Sheet measures 21 x 25". This scarce map by Anna Beek depicts the Belgian city of Ath under attack by French troops during the Nine Years' War (1688--1697). Dating to approximately 1725, the map shows the siege of 1697, in which French troops stationed around the fortified city attempted to win it from Spanish control. The city's fortifications, walls, and surrounding moats are all depicted, as are the locales of French troops and embattlements in accordance with a key printed on a trompe-l'oeil stone plinth in the lower right corner of the map. Arcing black lines show the paths of cannonballs over the city's walls. The map is in good condition with vibrant hand coloring and wide margins. Minor wear is concentrated in the margins, not affecting the image. Anna Beek was a late-17th century publisher and engraver of maps based in the Hague. Her detailed maps and battle plans are often found in composite atlases and have become highly valued due to their quality and scarcity.

THE ROYAL COMMENTARIES OF PERU IN TWO PARTS

London: Miles Flesher for Samuel Heyrick, 1688. First Edition in English. Half Leather. Folio. THE FIRST PART: TREATING OF THE ORIGINAL OF THEIR INCAS OR KINGS; OF THEIR IDOLATRY; OF THEIR LAWS AND GOVERNMENT BOTH IN PEACE AND WAR; OF THE REIGNS AND CONQUESTS OF THE INCAS; WITH MANY OTHER PARTICULARS RELATING TO THEIR EMPIRE AND POLICIES BEFORE SUCH TIME AS THE SPANIARDS INVADED THEIR COUNTRIES; THE SECOND PART: DESCRIBING THE MANNER BY WHICH THAT NEW WORLD WAS CONQUERED BY THE SPANIARDS; ALSO THE CIVIL WARS BETWEEN THE PIZARRISTS AND THE ALMAGRIANS, OCCASIONED BY QUARRELS ARISING ABOUT THE DIVISION OF THAT LAND; THE RISE AND FALL OF REBELS; AND OTHER PARTICULARS CONTAINED IN THAT HISTORY. [viii], 1019, [8]; A4, B2, C4-6N4, 6O2, *2-**2. Early half calf with discreet mid-20th century(?) reback, early spine and label laid down. Marbled paper over boards is quite abraded, particularly the back board that is abraded to the board. Rubricated title page; 11 engraved plates, all present; paper flaws with very slight loss of text on 2 leaves only; intermittent foxing/spotting and toning as you might expect; this copy bears the bookplate of Lionel Damer on the front pastedown. Damer was a late 18th century Parliamentarian. A nice copy of one of four variants of this edition--there is no known priority. Without question, the most important source of Peruvian history, written by Garcilasso de la Vega in two parts, the first issued in Lisbon in 1608 [Comentarios Reales de los Incas], the second in Cordoba in 1617 [Historia General del Peru], both astonishingly scarce. Born the year of the Spanish conquest, Garcilasso had access to individuals that practiced the Incan traditions before the Spanish arrived and had firsthand accounts of the Conquest. This present translations was the first into English, the second was not completed until 1869 when the task was taken up by Clements R. Markam and the Hakluyt Society. Quite a scarce and important work on Peruvian history. Sabin 98760; European Americana 688/100; Wing G215; Palau 354800.

Connoissance et culture parfaite des belles fleures. Des tulipes rares, des anemones extraordinaires, des oillets fins. Contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine.

      - Goldsmith BMC STC French C-1383; cf. Tomasi, Oak Spring Flora 34 (1688 ed.); not in Hunt; Quérard. Second edition of a "sophisticated little volume" (Tomasi) on rare flowers, describing four of the most highly prized flowers of the period and giving instructions for their cultivation. In the preface the author, probably Nicolas de Valnay, observes that although all flowers can be regarded as testimony to God's glory, he chooses to concentrate on the four he considers truely exceptional. The book opens with the tulip which the author declares to be the king of flowers. He then passes to the anemone, then the carnation and lastely the auricula. At the time these were still unknown to most European gardeners, most having been gradually introduced into Europe from Turkey, the East Indies and other exotic lands from 1593 (when Clusius cultivated the first Dutch tulip) to the author's day. The author also names prominent cultivators of these four flowers, but doubts whether they display sufficient interest in or knowledge of their flowers. A good copy. Binding slightly damaged near the spine and corners. With the bookplate of the Archiv Deutsche Gärtnerböse in Aachen, and an owner's inscription of Barré on the verso of the title-page. A passionate contribution to 17th-century flower growing, notably concerning sorts recently introduced to Europe from exotic lands.
