[Zacharias Konrad von Uffenbach, 1683-1734] to the front paste-down [engraved by Johann Ulrich Krauss of Augsburg in 1705] This exquisite and finely detailed plate depicts the inside of Uffenbach's famous libary. "The library of Uffenbach, at one time mayor of Frankfurt, was one of the largest of his time, counting, according to Buzas, 40,000 titles bound in 12,000 volumes, among them 413 incunabula. Towards the end of his life he decided to dispose of it, but frustrated by the unpredictable results of book auctions, decided to take matters into his own hands, himself compiling its catalogue, and affixing to each item the price he wished to obtain for it.". First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No dust Jacket. 4to.

Sylvia's revenge, or; a satyr against man; in answer to the satyr against woman.

London: printed by Joseph Streater, and are to be sold by John Southby, 1688 - Small 4to, [viii],22,[2], advertisement) p. including the longitudinal half title. The font used for the longitudinal title is unusually large and thick, and clearly was not intended to be used as they customarily were, for folding over the fore-edge. Rebound in dark red straight-grained half morocco. Ex Lib Mortimer Schiff and John Brett-Smith. A fine copy. First edition. Wing A2992D; CBEL II, 467. Sylvia's revenge was written in reply to Robert Gould's misogynistic poem Love given o're: or, a satyr against the pride; lust, and inconstancy, &c. of woman, first published in 1682 and many times republished. The satire also inspired the fourteen-year old Sarah Fyge to reply with The female advocate, 1686. According to James Sutherland, to read Ames's work is "to scrape the very bottom of a muddy barrel, but his vigorous and often obscene doggerel satisfied the crude taste of a masculine public." John Dunton, who published some of Ames's earliest work, described him as "originally a coat-seller, but he always had some yammerings upon him after learning and the muses. Wine and women were the great bane of his life and happiness." Sylvia's revenge is Ames's first work by a good three years. The attribution comes only from a passing remark in a poem attacking him, The search after wit, published in 1691. See above. The writer speaks throughout in a female persona, and the commendatory poem at the beginning, addressed to "Madam," is signed "M. P.," which could either be Mary Pix, or intended to be taken for her.         Courte & solide histoire de la fondation des ordres religieux. Avec les figures de leurs habits.

Amsterdam, Adriaan Schoonebeek, 1688 - 12mo. [4]f including engraved allegorical frontispiece + 73 + [1 blank + 4]f. 73 engraved plates included in collation. Vignettes on title and first page of text which also has a grotesque initial made up of 2 monks. Contemporary calf, re-hinged. A historical guide to the principal male religious orders compiled and finely illustrated with costume plates by a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe. Each engraving is a portrait of a member of a different religious order whose habit is carefully shaded to indicate its various colours for the interest of the reader and as an aid for artists. In his preface the compiler points to the lack of literature with precise information on the religious orders and their dress, stating that he has added the arms of each order to his image of the individual member portrayed, where ever he was able to trace them. The last plate represents a specimen dress only marked with shades in order to distinguish between colours. Schoonebeek, a highly accomplished engraver, was a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe from 1676 to 1679. He gave lessons in etching to Peter the Great during his stay at Amsterdam in 1698, and later accompanied him to Moscow, where he spent his final years teaching a number of pupils.         Histoire des Avanturiers,

Paris: Jacques Le Febure, , 1688. qui se sont signalez dans les Indes, contenant ce qu'ils ont fait de plus remarquable depuis vingt annees. 2 volumes bound in one, small octavo. (157 × 97 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep trade binding, raised bands to the spine, double fillet panel containing floral device gilt to the compartments. Engraved general title, 3 folding maps, and 4 illustrations to the text, 3 of them full-page. Light browning throughout, occasional marginal stains, mild damp-staining to the last few leaves, worming to the upper portion of one of the maps, costing three letters, professionally repaired with letters provided in MS facsimile, slightly rubbed, joints, head- and tail-cap skilfully restored, new label. Second French edition. Sabin describes the first French edition, published two years previously to this, as "of extreme rarity". Translated by Frontignières, who utilized the Spanish edition of 1681 but made substantial revisions and additions, possibly in consultation with Exquemelin's manuscript. A highly popular and influential account of pirates in the Caribbean, Hill says of Exquemelin that he was "the inspiration for a vast number of novels, plays, and imaginary voyages." A Huguenot native to Honfleur, Exquemelin left France in 1666 as an indentured servant bound for the Antilles. On Tortuga, he was sold to a nefarious government officer, and later resold to a doctor who taught him some of the skills of a barber-surgeon, offered Exquemelin his freedom for a price, and gave him a few surgical tools. By the end of the 1660's, Exquemelin became a flibustier, or privateer. He probably served with Jean-David Nau l'Olonnais, and participated in the raid of Maracaibo in 1669. He later took part in Henry Morgan's sack of Panama in 1670-71. Soon thereafter, Exquemelin abandoned piracy, returned to Europe, and studied medicine in Amsterdam, where he completed this account. He later returned to America several times as a ship's surgeon aboard Dutch and Spanish vessels. He writes in considerable detail about raids upon various settlements throughout the West Indies, fights with Indians, encounters with other pirates, and acts of torture committed by the marauding bands upon the region's inhabitants. Although some of his dates are questionable, Exquemelin's account is considered among the most reliable of the period.

Digressiones Justinianeae In Partes Duas, Quarum Altera Nova,.

1688 - Elegant Essays on Roman Law by Noted Dutch Jurist Huber, Ulrich [1636-1694]. Digressiones Justinianeae: In Partes Duas, Quarum Altera Nova, Distinctae: Quibus Varia & Imprimis Humaniora Juris Continentur: Insertus Est De Jure in Re & Ad Rem Quod Dicitur Tractatus: & Adjecta De Ratione Discendi Atque Docendi Juris Diatribe, Per Modum Dialogi: Cum Indice Rerum & Verborum. Franeker: Apud Johannem Gyselaar, Henricum Amama, & Zachariam Taedama, 1688. [xxx], 632 [i.e. 528], [4], 63, [17] pp. Each section preceded by divisional title page. Quarto (7-3/4" x 6"). Contemporary vellum, early hand-lettered title to spine. Light soiling, spine somewhat darkened, corners and spine ends bumped, vellum just beginning to crack through pastedowns, text block just beginning to detach, but still quite secure, a few gatherings slightly loose. Title page printed in red and black. Large woodcut printer device to title page, woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown, small stamps and markings to endleaves and verso of title page. A solid copy. * Third edition, and the final authorial edition. With indexes. Huber was a well-known Dutch jurist and professor at the Universities of Franeker, Utrecht and Leyden. He was also a judge in Friesland and the author of numerous legal works on Roman and Roman-Dutch law. He was as important in his day as Grotius, and his work remains influential in South Africa. First published in 1664, Digressiones Justinianeae went through eight editions, the final in 1721. More an essay collection than a treatise, it collects his thoughts on a variety of Roman law topics. He also discusses legal pedagogy and the work of his contemporaries and near-contemporaries, such as Grotius and Hobbes. These latter sections are especially interesting because they show what a learned contemporary thought of their work when it was new. They are similar in many regards to reviews in learned journals or publications like the New York Review of Books. Dekkers, Bibliotheca Belgica Juridica 86 (4).

Chez Etienne Michallet 1688 - - Chez Etienne Michallet, A Paris 1688, in 12 (9,5x16,5cm), (58) 308pp., Un Vol. relié. Manuscript document and indenture, June 19, 1688, Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, New York, an Agreement between Gorsham Moore, Samuel Moore, Joseph Moore, John Moore and Content Titus

Manuscript Document Signed. One page, edges untrimmed. 12.25" x 8". Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, New York. June 19, 1688. Document Signed by Gorsham Moore, Samuel Moore, Joseph Moore, Content Titus, etc. with their black wax seals. Also signed and affirmed by Lambert Woodhull and Daniell Phillips, clerk. Verso with slightly over ten lines of text docketed by Daniell Phillips, signed again by Samuel Moore and Content Titus. Old fold lines, small paper defects, else very good to near fine. Content Titus (1643-1730) was one of the first three elders of the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown (one of the oldest churches in Queens) and a prominent citizen of this Long Island community. On several occasions Titus was sent to the island of Jamaica to protest a tax forced upon Newtown. Titus lived first in Oyster Bay, then Huntington, and then moved to Newtown in 1672 where he purportedly married Rev. John Moore's daughter, Elizabeth Moore. This colonial New York manuscript document shows Content Titus as purchaser of a portion of land once owned by Rev. John Moore, and shows the four sons of the reverend, his heirs, as recipients of an award of property previously held by their father. The agreement also shows that all five men were to receive equal lot shares. A very nice 17th Century American document pertaining to Newtown [a.k.a. New Town and Newtowne] Long Island, and some of its earlier illustrious citizens. .

      - Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1688.3 volumes in 1. 4to. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt (spine rep.). With engraved frontispiece by C. or J. Luyken, engraved folding map and 6 engraved plates. (8),158,(6); (4),200,(4) pp.* First Dutch edition; first published in Paris in 1683 Description de la Louisiane. - 'First and most important of the writings of this rascally friar, giving a fairly reliable account of his genuine voyage up the Mississippi from the Illinois to the falls he named St. Anthony's (including his captivity there among the Sioux Indians). It was the first book to use the name Louisiane, albeit that name whad been given to this region previously by La Salle and was not Hennepin's invention as claimed by him' (Howes p.262). Hennepin, a Belgian Franciscan missionary, accompanied the French explorer De la Salle on his 1678-79 expedition from Fort Frontenac to Niagara, then on to Illinois country from where Hennepin went further on his own. He became the first to describe the Niagara Falls (Howgego p.500). - The earliest printed account of Louisiana. - (Corner of 1 leaf in the second work damaged with some loss of text; age-browned). - A very fine copy with the map.
