Bullet's Traité is similarly written in a spirit of pure practicality, treating that branch of surveying known as levelling, and illustrated with wonderful engravings (ARCHITECTURE) First edition. 12mo.         A True and perfect narrative of the strange and unexpected finding the crucifix and gold-chain of that pious prince, St. Edward the King and Confessor, which was found. and presented to His Most Sacred Majesty, King James the Second.

Printed by J.B. and sold by Randal Taylor, London 1688 - Small 4to. pp. [6], 34. With imprimatur leaf facing the title. Bound in 19th century marbled boards (rubbed). Re-backed in black morocco with older gilt lettered spine laid on. Bookplate depicting a baron's crown on inside front cover. Sticker removed from front end paper. Booklet is trimmed on the bottom obscuring the lower printed border line on the title page, (but not affecting any text). Plenty of space remains in the margins of the text pages. 40 sheets of 19th century blank paper are bound in the rear. Top edge gilt. The author is actually Henry Keepe writing under the pseudonym of Charles Taylour. His booklet, addressed to King James II, describes how he (Keepe) salvaged the crucifix and gold chain of Edward the Confessor from a damaged tomb at Westminster and how he later presented this treasure to the newly crowned king. The author claims that his discovery of the artifact on June 11, 1685 was a "forerunner of the Good News" that James had defeated his enemies (presumably the Duke of Monmouth). Keepe then relates three previous occasions when King Edward's body was disinterred. On each occasion the corpse was supposedly found in a miraculously uncorrupted state. These stories stand in some contrast to the author's own experience. Although Keepe stresses that the tomb's artifacts, including the gold chain and crucifix, correspond to historical accounts, he also reveals (perhaps inadvertently) that the Confessor's body was nothing but bones. Unusual and scarce piece. ESTC locates only 7 copies in the U.S. OCLC lists 5 locations. [ESTC R12288; Wing K128; Clancy, English Catholic Books, 565]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dictionnary of Classical Antiquities. p. 231). "The Praeparatio evangelica ('preparation for the gospel'), in which he shows that the Greek tradition is inferior to the Hebrew and the best of Greek philosophy merely coincided with or was derived from biblical teaching, is incidentally valuable in that it includes many quotations from classical authors now lost."         The Character of a Trimmer

By the Honourable Sir W. C., London, 1688, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good+, Dust Jacket Condition: None, 3rd EditionSize: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall, This is a 43 page item originally done as a pamphlet (so our restorer surmises) and now superbly laid into full leather boards. Restorer advises me that this is not a sewn in making and that the glue is reversible. In addition to lavish gilt stamping of the boards, the spine and the boards interior edges, it has marbled pastedowns and endsheets that have been used to excellent effect. First pastedown has Ex-libris plate from the scholar William Appleton Aiken. Collation is in quarto, primarily. The boards of the book measure 8'' x 6 1/4''. Structure is as follows, there are two restored endsheets the first of which has small pencilled notes from prior owner (re-Halifax, Wing H296, and placements). Next appears title page giving the date in Roman Numerals, MDCLXXXVIII, verso blank. Next is a 2 page preface, unpaginated. Following this the text begins, paginated 1 through 43. Text measures 7 3/4'' x 5 3/4'', fore-edge to gutter. I note darkening of the blank verso of page 43 and one dark foxing spot, about pencil eraser size page 15/16. Text is otherwise remarkable for its suppleness and legibility. The grade given above maybe thought of as a compromise between the beautiful restoration and the age of the pamphlet, Book

Voyage en Moscovie d'un Ambassadeur, Conseiller de la Chambre Imp‚riale, Envoy‚ par L'Empereur L‚opold au Czar Alexis Mihalowics, Grand Duc de Moscovie.

Leyden. Chez Friderik Harring, 1688. - 16mo, 15.2cm, first French edition, 381p., woodcuts title page device and headers, in contemporary full calf, real raised bands, gilt decoration in the panels, leather label gilt, marbled endpapers and speckled edges, wanting both free flies, worn, very good sound copy. (cgc) By Mayer, Augsutin, Baron von Meyerberg, (1612-1688). First French Translation originally published in Latin in 1668. The author, a German diplomat, was sent as an envoy by the Emperor Leopold I to the Court of Czar Alexei Michaelovitch in 1661 to re-establish peace between Poland and Russia. Mayerberg, together with his colleague Calvucci and seventeen attendants, experienced great difficulty in obtaining entry into the country. Once there, they were prevented from all external communication, finally being allowed to return to Vienna in March of 1663. His account of experiences contains much useful information on seventeenth century Russian manners and customs. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Zacharias Konrad von Uffenbach, 1683-1734] to the front paste-down [engraved by Johann Ulrich Krauss of Augsburg in 1705] This exquisite and finely detailed plate depicts the inside of Uffenbach's famous libary.         Sylvia's revenge, or; a satyr against man; in answer to the satyr against woman.

London: printed by Joseph Streater, and are to be sold by John Southby, 1688 - Small 4to, [viii],22,[2], advertisement) p. including the longitudinal half title. The font used for the longitudinal title is unusually large and thick, and clearly was not intended to be used as they customarily were, for folding over the fore-edge. Rebound in dark red straight-grained half morocco. Ex Lib Mortimer Schiff and John Brett-Smith. A fine copy. First edition. Wing A2992D; CBEL II, 467. Sylvia's revenge was written in reply to Robert Gould's misogynistic poem Love given o're: or, a satyr against the pride; lust, and inconstancy, &c. of woman, first published in 1682 and many times republished. The satire also inspired the fourteen-year old Sarah Fyge to reply with The female advocate, 1686. According to James Sutherland, to read Ames's work is "to scrape the very bottom of a muddy barrel, but his vigorous and often obscene doggerel satisfied the crude taste of a masculine public." John Dunton, who published some of Ames's earliest work, described him as "originally a coat-seller, but he always had some yammerings upon him after learning and the muses. Wine and women were the great bane of his life and happiness." Sylvia's revenge is Ames's first work by a good three years. The attribution comes only from a passing remark in a poem attacking him, The search after wit, published in 1691. See above. The writer speaks throughout in a female persona, and the commendatory poem at the beginning, addressed to "Madam," is signed "M. P.," which could either be Mary Pix, or intended to be taken for her.
