Paris: Claude Barbin, 1688. Quarto, with a large engraved folding plan of Peking; in contemporary French speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands. An especially important book on 17th-century China, which Lach and van Kley have described as 'perhaps the most comprehensive and perceptive general description of China published during the second half of the century'. This was the first of several editions, and formed the basis of an English version by John Ogilby.Gabriel de Magalhaes, 1609-1677, was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary to China. The book was translated by Claude Bernou from Magalhaes' manuscript (written in Portuguese) that was sent back to Europe in 1682. The fine large engraved plan of the city was put together by Bernou from sketches by Magalhaes.Of particular note is 'what was probably the first presentation of a fragment of Chinese text to a European audience. The fragment [p. 103] consisted of sixteen characters taken from the opening lines of the Ta hsüeh [Great Learning]... Magalhaes regarded these words of Confucius... to be eminently appropriate for explaining the task of the preacher of the Christian Gospel in China' (D.E. Mungello, Curious Land: Jesuit Accommodation and the Origins of Sinology, University of Hawaii, 1989). Mungello has written at length about Magalhaes' study of Chinese language and history, and concludes that 'whereas Ricci and Trigault had conveyed only a bare sketch of the Chinese language... ', Magalhaes together with Semedo greatly advanced and influenced western understanding of the Chinese language, and particularly the early study of the Confucian texts. This copy in good original condition was once in the library of the French writer and explorer Jean-Baptiste Labat, with his manuscript ownership inscription on title and a few marginal annotations (pp. 260/61, 266, 382). Some water-staining to a few lower margins, some leaves browned; upper joint a little split but quite firm; a good copy.

Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments with titles direct, raised bands, edges speckled red. Bound without the portrait frontispiece and table. Free endpapers lacking. Closed tear with small repair to sig. aii. A very good copy in a handsome contemporary binding. Woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. First edition of the author's continuation of his manual on mercantile trade, Le Parfait Négociant (1675). Savary wrote on commercial topics with considerable authority in that he made a large fortune through commerce. He suffered both politically and financially from the disgrace of Fouquet (1661), who was his patron, but he later made good his name and was admitted in 1670 into the council established to undertake commercial reforms. So great was his influence on these reforms that when, in 1673, the ordinances recommended by the council came into effect, they were informally known as "le Code Savary". His colleagues in the council pressed him to make his views more generally known, and so, in 1675, he published Le Parfait Négociant, an enormously successful work which went through several editions and translations during the author's life. "Jacques Savary was the individual most responsible for promoting the lower of cost or market rule. In [Le Parfait Négociant] he recommended current price valuations of inventory, unless it had begun to deteriorate of go out of style, in which case its book value should be reduced. Book value should also be lowered if replacement cost falls below acquisition price" (Michael Chatfield, The History of Accounting (RLE Accounting): An International Encyclopedia, p. 514). Le Négociant's sequel, Parères (affidavits or certificates), contains many examples of bookkeeping technique based on Savary's experience in the textile trade, in which he had made his fortune. From the library of American bibliophile Jean R. Perrette, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Golsmiths' 2685; Kress 1679. [Attributes: First Edition]

First and only edition of the Dutch translation of a philosophical overview of nature by Richard Bradley (1688-1732), examining minerals, flora and fauna, in an attempt to demonstrate their practical applications, particularly in agriculture. It also includes a description of infertile lands in England with suggestions for improvements, a description of gardens in Great Britain with improvements for the growing of fruit trees, and a chapter on the maintaining of grapevines. It was first published in English in 1721 as A philosophical account of the works of nature. The present edition is translated from the second English edition of 1739, which adds an appendix on fleas and lice, Flemish agriculture and some suggestions for speeding up the growing process of several crops."Bradley was a prolific science writer, His style was clear and readable, and his reputation immense; indeed, his publications did much to encourage a scientific approach to gardening and husbandry" (DSB).Minor dampstain on the bottom of the inner margins of the first 15 leaves and some leaves slightly browned. [i.e. Sentiments d'Erasme de Rotterdam.].

Cf. A. Stegmann, 'La réhabilitation de l’orthodoxie d’Erasme par Jean Richard' in "Colloquia Erasmiana Turonensia", Tours, 1969, II, 869-875. [.] In the edition of 1686 the title is Theologia Tripartita Universa, [.] containing about five times the matter of the Controversiae. The work includes a life of Oliver Plunket, the catholic archbishop of Armagh, who was executed at London in 1681, and a life of Peter Talbot, the catholic archbishop of Dublin, who died in imprisonment at Dublin in 1680. In addition to these Archdekin's work contains a number of anecdotes connected with the history of Ireland, introduced as examples in support of his theological doctrines.         Histoire des variations des eglises protestantes.

Paris: Chez la veuve de Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy. Good with no dust jacket. 1688. First Edition. Hardcover. This is the rare first edition, two leather bound volumes, complete, from the important Mendham Collection of what is perhaps the most important work of one of the greatest Catholic orators and theologians, Jacques-Benigne Bossuet. It dates back to 1688 and is bound in full calf leather with several engraved initials and head or tail pieces. The set is complete, two volumes, each volume measuring 6 ¼? by 4? [16 lvs.] , 406 pp., [15 lvs] , [3] 524 [19 lvs] in fair to good antiquarian condition. BIndings are holding but weakening; boards show wear, spines chipped, pages unmarked except for title pages with old monastic inscriptions (from whom Mendham purchased them?) and Law LIbrary bookplates. This book is quite rare: Worldcat (OCLC) lists only 6 copies in this 12mo format worldwide; and 41 copies in a quarto format. It has an important provenance as well, it comes from the great Law Society of England and Wales Library, which sold off a portion of its collection which had been donated by the Church scholar and clergyman Joseph Mendham; these two first editions comprised an integral part of the Mendham Collection. ?In 1688, his great Histoire des variations des Églises protestantes ("History of the Variations of the Protestant Churches"), perhaps the most brilliant of all his works, appeared. Few writers could have made the Justification controversy interesting or even intelligible. His argument is simple enough. Without rules, an organized society cannot hold together, and rules require an authorized interpreter. The Protestant churches had thrown over this interpreter; and Bossuet had small trouble in showing that, the longer they lived, the more they varied on increasingly important points.? ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .

THE WORKS OF MR ABRAHAM COWLEY [bound with] THE SECOND AND THIRD PARTS OF THE WORKS OF MR ABRAHAM COWLEY

London: J. M. for Henry Herringman; Mary Clark for Charles Harper, 1688; 1689. FIRST EDITION of Part III. 304 x 202 mm (12 x 8"). [58], 41, [1] (blank), 80, [4], 70 [i.e.68], 154, 23, [1] (blank), 148; [16], 161, [21], 166 (pp. 148-9 misnumbered 140-1), [2] pp. Two works bound together in one volume. FIRST EDITION of Part III. VERY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY BLACK MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT. Frontispiece portrait of the author. Separate title pages for each section (those in the first dated 1687), pastedown with armorial bookplate of Archibald Philip, Earl of Rosebery and the book label of Lawrence Strangman, front free endpaper with bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Perkin B1; Wing C-6658, C-6664B, and C-6665.Literature One open tear just touching printed marginal notation, small hole affecting two words, light and very sparse foxing (a touch heavier on a few signatures), and some negligible spotting here and there, otherwise A VERY CLEAN AND ATTRACTIVE COPY with only the most trivial wear. From a distinguished collection, in pleasing condition, and in a contemporaneous binding, this volume contains the works of Abraham Cowley, one of the most precocious poets in the annals of English literature. Cowley (1616-67) was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15; and he went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. Cowley was a staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen, Henrietta Maria, where he helped to encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters, including the royal couple themselves. Despite having been arrested and imprisoned as a royalist agent at one point, Cowley escaped the Cromwell years largely unscathed and retired to the countryside in 1663. Upon his death, Cowley was not only given the extraordinary honor of burial in Westminster Abbey (noted by the DNB as "the most lavish funeral which had ever been given to a mere man of letters in England"), but was also afforded a privileged spot next to the graves of Spenser and Chaucer. Cowley's influence on contemporary poetry was demonstrably deep; his funerary monument refers to him as "the English Virgil," and Perkin asserts that his "fame as a poet exceeded even that of Milton" during the waning years of the Restoration. The first part here contains the poet's best-known mature works, while the second is composed of his early efforts, and the third his writings on plants. Our volume is from the collection of Robert S. Pirie (1934-2015), an extremely successful lawyer and investment banker who amassed the finest library of 16th and 17th century English literature in private hands during his lifetime. In 1984, he was elected one of the 40 members of the Roxburghe Club, the world's oldest society of bibliophiles.
