Onnayo kinmo zui [or: Joyo kimmo zui] [trans.: Illustrated Encyclopedia for Women]

128 fine full-page woodcuts. Five vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed, minor worming in Vol. III very carefully repaired), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover (rubbed), new stitching. Tokyo: 1687. First edition of this handsomely illustrated book; the woodcuts are by Hanbei Yoshida (active 1678-1705), one of the pioneers of the Ukiyo-e school. Hanbei was the leading illustrator in Kyoto and Osaka of his period and worked mostly, if not exclusively, as a book illustrator. He was the first Ukiyo-e illustrator of the region to sign his books. The present work is one of his most famous and successful publications. "With the growth of the chonin class and the aspirations of the new bourgeoisie to a fuller life style, the seventeenth century saw the production of encyclopaedias of behaviour and etiquette, and invariably such compendiums were replete with illustration, detailing correct usage from laying a table to tying a sash. Hambei was the illustrator of one such book, the Joyo Kimmo Zui, 'Illustrated Encyclopaedia for Women,' published in five volumes in 1687. In its comprehensive treatment of dress, hair-styles, household management and the like, it is typical of its class, and the majority of the woodcuts are of almost diagrammatic simplicity, but it is notable for a few full-length figures of women displaying kimono and these lift it from the general ruck of books of the period, the fine patterning within graceful silhouettes."-Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, I, pp. 108-09. The woodcuts of the kimono are most striking and attractive, showing how they are worn as well as the enormous range of patterns according to season. Also illustrated are various implements for women's use in everyday life, including furniture and cosmetic utensils, hair styles, obi, and methods of folding paper to wrap incense. There was an incomplete copy in the Hyde collection (sale Christie's New York, 7 October 1988, lot 110). .

The Works of King Charles The Martyr

Ric Chiswell at the Rose and Crown, London, 1687, Full-Leather, Book Condition: Fair-, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 2nd EditionSize: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall, A difficult book to describe. To begin we will give the information from the previous owners notes. The initial date is his purchase. "1949 RR560 (England) Charles I. Basilike. The Works of King Charles The Martyr. Papers Concerning The Differences Betwixt His Said Majesty & His Two houses Of Parliament. With The History of His Life; & Also of His Tryal & Martyredome 2nd. ed. Lond. 1687. 3 lg. fldg. engr. plts. 728 pp. Some damp-st.-generally very light. Old calf- worn, little chpd. rebacked w/ old spine laid down. Cors. repaired. inner hinges reinforced w/ clo. tape. Calf checked- perhaps from heat, but doesn't look scorched. Later end paps. 100.00."PLEASE NOTE: while shooting the book for it's listing 2 sections of the old spine dislodged about 3" down from title, they will be kept with the book, see foto to come.I will try to add to the prior owner's description and finally give an informal summary of the books sectioning, and pagination. The repairs to the front board corners look very rustic when seen from pastedown side, looking better with age appropriate roughness from outside. I wonder if the book might have a hint of old smoke smell.. The text has notable texture, waviness, moisture stains, but, the foxing seems at bay, given books age. Since acquiring the book, it has been and will be stored in glassine bag, acid free. Foto should follow shortly. While the previous owners description was fair I think he may have been too kind, it might be best to think it a bit rougher that his description implies. Glad to email fotos of the internals. Xlibris plate first pastedown. Light pencil notes at top of first end sheet, ditto verso of 2nd printed page (this is the first title page and follows the Royal Crest page) this note says, "this edition was printed by order of James II." 2nd title page follows and has centuries old penned note at upper corner, dated but I can not make it out. Chiswell and date in roman numerals (1687) given here. These pages are followed by 7 pages, these being the verso of 2nd title page and 3 leaves, of contents for both sections. Text begins following, page 1 thru page 720 after which are 4 leaves, 8 pages of printing history and notes, among them one by Samuel Keble, dated 1693 and another by William Levet, dated 1691. The 3 gatefolds are in place and but for waviness look splendid to my eyes. Book measures 14 1/2 X 9 3/4".Gently leafing thru each page confirmed that all text is present. Please note pages 273 to 282 and 287 and 288 have been corrected from a first digit of '3' to the correct number '2.' The following was noted, pg. 127 has small diagonal section missing (about postage stamp size) at upper corner, ditto but smaller for page 211. Additionally there is some, long ago corrected, dogearing and the occasional dark fleck of foxing, all text seemed legible to my eye. Standard domestic shipping, beyond our basic fee, and any confirmation/insurance will be paid by seller. All items are shipped with appropriate heavy padding and boxing as necessary. The previous owners notes and my copy of the Wing listing (C2076) will accompany the book, Book

Maximes, Sentences, et Reflections morales et politiques.

Paris: Guillaume Cavelier 1687 - FIRST EDITION, woodcut ornament on title, tear in lower outer cornemr of M2, pp. [xvi], 248, 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, minor wear, ownership inscription on title inked oververy good Antoine Gombaud was not in fact a Chevalier, but adopted the title (Méré being where he was educated) for the protagonist in his dialogues who expressed his views. The maximes are worldly wise, for example [in translation]: Love is the weakness of the young, the vice of mature men, and the shame of old men; Woman is often an aid, and often an enemy, and marriage is sometimes a safe haven, sometimes a dreadful shipwreck.Confusingly, the author is sometimes given as Gombaud’s exact contemporary George Brossin, (genuine) Chevalier de Méré (e.g. by Rochebiliere, but ‘perhaps not’ is the opinion of Brunet). There are 2 variants of the title-page: our copy is the variant with Cavelier in the title: the two variants are explained at the end of the Privilege, where Du Castin cedes half of the copyright to Cavelier.Scarce: COPAC records 3 copies, Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge (all du Castin); WorldCat locates 2 copies in North America, Wisconsin (du Castin) and Newberry (Cavelier).

"Hermann returned to Leiden in 1680 on receiving an appointment as Professor of Botany and director of the botanic garden. He devoted himself assiduously to building up the Leiden garden with rare plants from the East Indies, America and the Cape... His first publication, 'Horti academici Lugduno-Batavi catalogus', Leiden 1687, was a descriptive catalogue of the plants in the University garden in which many are attractively illustrated, including 34 Cape plants" (Gunn & Codd, Botanical exploration of Southern Africa pp. 26-27).//"Paul Hermann was director of the Leiden Botanical garden from 1679-1695. He did excellent, vigorous work in depicting his plants, and one group of his drawings of Ceylon plants, made in the second half of the 17th century, had an interesting history. They were carefully preserved for many years by a series of collectors, one of whom finally brought them to the attention of Linné in 1745. Linné found them so exciting that he based his 'Flora Zeylandica' on them in 1747 ..." (Hunt 378).         Harangue faite a Sa Majesté par les Ambassadeurs du Roy de Siam Le Mardi 14. Janvier 1687, à leur Audience de Congé.

Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, Paris 1687 - 6 pp, [plus 1 integral blank]. Bound in old vellum, internally perfectly clean and fresh, a very good copy. Extremely rare first edition of this ephemeral pamphlet documenting the final royal audience of the Siamese embassy to France in 1686/7. The work is a formal request for permission to return to Siam - citing the King of Siam¿s impatience to hear of the results of the embassy as well as the prevailing winds and the season. Increasingly concerned at the Dutch predominance over Eastern trade, Phra Narai, King of Siam, succeeded in sending the first Siamsese embassy to France in 1684. The present account relates to the second such embassy (June 1686 - March 1687), whose purpose, as noted in the text here, was to secure an eternal alliance between France and Siam. For its part the newly-reorganized French Company of the Orient was delighted by these proposals, securing them valuable trade in spices and textiles. ¿The mission in Siam became the focus of France¿s activities in the East during the 1680¿s. Ayut¿ia, King Narai¿s capital, became a ¿French Macao¿ for missionaries and merchants departing for and returning from the stations further to the East.¿ (Lach & Van Kley, III: 252) The arrival of three Siamese ambassadors in northern France in the summer of 1686 caused a great deal of consternation in the popular sphere: illustrations of the embassy were frequently produced for eg almanacs of the time. The present work, printed by the Imprimerie Royale ¿de l¿exprés commandement de Sa Majesté¿, is naturally as much a testament of the might of Louis XIV as it is a faithful record of the ambassadors¿ visit. The ¿harangue¿ ends with a promise to communicate the munificence of Louis and his kingdom to ¿all the Orient¿ upon their return: ¿Ces Mémoires seront consacrez à la postérité, & mis en dépot entre les monumens les plus rares & les plus précieux de l¿Estat. Le Roy nostre Maistre les envoyera pour présent aux Princes ses Alliez; & par là tout l¿Orient sçaura bientost, & tous les siecles à venir apprendront les vertus incomparabl de Louis le Grand.¿ OCLC records no US copies of this first (Paris) edition. The Bell Library holds a 3p Lyon imprint also dated 1687. The present speech was also published in a Latin translation, Legatorum Siamensium ad regem oratio, held only by the BnF according to OCLC. * OCLC 466051349.         Good Advice to the Church of England, Roman Catholick, and Protestant Dissenter: In Which It Is Endeavoured to Be Made Appear that It Is Their Duty, Principles & Interest to Abolish the Penal Laws and Tests

London: Andrew Sowle. 1687. First. First edition. Very good in later, faded marbled paper wrappers; pages age-toned, with light waterstaining to upper halves, and last leaf with a closed tear. An early hand has inked "Wm. Penn" in the upper margin of the title-page. Six years after being made master of the province of Pennsylvania, William Penn argues for religious tolerance and liberty of conscience for all Christians; this anonymously published pamphlet, issued during a time of intense antagonism among Catholics, Anglicans and Dissenters, makes the then-radical claim that multiple faiths could coexist within one country without having to strive for dominance. Less frequently seen on the market than some Penn publications. Wing (2nd ed.), P1296B. .

        Anatomes Plantrum Tabula.

. Leiden, Peter van der Aa, 1687, 4°, Frontispiece and 87 partially numbered engraved copper plates, some folding or double, bound in later 18th Century half calf over marbled boards.. Complete Set of the Botanical Plates of the Opera Omnia ! - - Each plate is carefully mounted on a wide stubb, some margins of some plates trimmed to plate mark as usual, but an exceptionally clean set of these famous plates. - - Plates "to the first Part of Malpighi's Work belong 54 plates, which are numbered in the same manner and contain in each plate the same identical figures in the Leyden 4to Editionb published in 1687, as in the London folio edition published in 1686. As the size of the paper is however less, the figures necessarily crowed more together. - In the second Part of the London Edition, the Plates begin with number 1, and are continued to 39. - In this edition, there are only 34 plates - but the number of figures in each is the same; so that , as before, they are more crowded in the Leyden, than in the London edition. In both editions the figures are numbered exactly in the some order." - - Marcello Malpighi (1628.-1694) "was the founder of microscopic anatomy and a pioneer in the study of plant development. He approached the subject through the study of plant tissue."

Nieuwe doch aanmerkens-waardige historie van Abissinien, andersints Ethiopien, getrokken uit de Latijnsche historie . en nu in't Nederduitsch gebracht door Willem Calebius.

      - Utrecht, Johannes Ribbius, 1687.4to. Later half vellum, with old brocade-paper to boards. With folding map and 8 engraved plates (3 folding). 222,(10) pp.* First Dutch edition. - The treatise by the scholar, Job (Hiob) Ludolf (1624-1704), was first published in Latin, Historia Aethiopica, in 1681, and is regarded as the first authoritative account of Abyssinia. He has been called the 'founder of Ethiopian studies in Europe'. Although he never visited the country, Ludolf formed a close working relationship with an Ethiopian monk resident in Rome, himself clearly a highly intelligent man. From this fruitful partnership emerged grammars and dictionaries of the classical Ethiopian language as well as a lengthy history of the country. The large folding map by Tellez, is a landmark of cartography, as it is the first to show the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana. The fine plates depict illustrations of Ethiopean fauna, a banana plant, decapitation of missionnaries, etc.- (Owner's name on title-page; partly dampstaining, slight browning, stronger to one quire). - Rare Dutch edition.Tiele 702; Cat.
