Geomancy was historically a form of predicting the future or uncovering facts hidden to the inquirer using a number of dots randomly jotted down by the geomancer. Fludd attempted to take this idea a little further and to use its application to unlock the unconscious part of the mind. Consequently, the work is of interest to historians of early psychology.         Good Advice to the Church of England, Roman Catholick, and Protestant Dissenter: In Which It Is Endeavoured to Be Made Appear that It Is Their Duty, Principles & Interest to Abolish the Penal Laws and Tests

London: Andrew Sowle. 1687. First. First edition. Very good in later, faded marbled paper wrappers; pages age-toned, with light waterstaining to upper halves, and last leaf with a closed tear. An early hand has inked "Wm. Penn" in the upper margin of the title-page. Six years after being made master of the province of Pennsylvania, William Penn argues for religious tolerance and liberty of conscience for all Christians; this anonymously published pamphlet, issued during a time of intense antagonism among Catholics, Anglicans and Dissenters, makes the then-radical claim that multiple faiths could coexist within one country without having to strive for dominance. Less frequently seen on the market than some Penn publications. Wing (2nd ed.), P1296B. .

      - Utrecht, Johannes Ribbius, 1687.4to. Later half vellum, with old brocade-paper to boards. With folding map and 8 engraved plates (3 folding). 222,(10) pp.* First Dutch edition. - The treatise by the scholar, Job (Hiob) Ludolf (1624-1704), was first published in Latin, Historia Aethiopica, in 1681, and is regarded as the first authoritative account of Abyssinia. He has been called the 'founder of Ethiopian studies in Europe'. Although he never visited the country, Ludolf formed a close working relationship with an Ethiopian monk resident in Rome, himself clearly a highly intelligent man. From this fruitful partnership emerged grammars and dictionaries of the classical Ethiopian language as well as a lengthy history of the country. The large folding map by Tellez, is a landmark of cartography, as it is the first to show the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana. The fine plates depict illustrations of Ethiopean fauna, a banana plant, decapitation of missionnaries, etc.- (Owner's name on title-page; partly dampstaining, slight browning, stronger to one quire). - Rare Dutch edition.Tiele 702; Cat.         Totius Regni Hungariae et adjacentium Regionum Tabula

Amsterdam 1687 - Totius Regni Hungariae et adjacentium Regionum Tabula A beautiful, highly detailed map of southeastern Europe by Nicolas Visscher. Includes regions of Northern Italy (showing the cities Bologna, Padua, and Venice), Bohemia, Austria (showing Vienna), Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, and the western coast of the Black Sea. Striking, vibrant, original color. An ornamental title cartouche is in the lower left corner. Truly outstanding, original color. The family of Visscher was one of the most distinguished of all seventeenth century cartographical firms, and major figures in the era now considered the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking. In the late 1600's, a period of great geographical discovery, Amsterdam was the international center of cartography. A number of venerable firms, including those established by Blaeu, Jansson, and Hondius competed for the ever-expanding market for maps and atlases. Despite the intense competition, with maps such as these Nicolas Visscher set standards for exceptional quality that few other firms were able to equal. Boasting advanced geographical information, fine engraving and coloring, and striking decoration, Visscher's maps are fundamental illustrations of the reasons for Dutch supremacy in mapmaking during the 17th century. VISSCHER, N Amsterdam, 1687. 533 x 864 mm Original color A 7 inch repaired tear is in the lower right section of the map; some discoloration in paper margin.

Contemporary mottled calf, sides with gilt coat of arms (skilful repair to head of spine). First edition of this important catalogue of the Leiden botanic garden portraying numerous exotic recently introduced plants. "Hermann returned to Leiden in 1680 on receiving an appointment as Professor of Botany and director of the botanic garden. He devoted himself assiduously to building up the Leiden garden with rare plants from the East Indies, America and the Cape. His first publication, 'Horti academici Lugduno-Batavi catalogus', Leiden 1687, was a descriptive catalogue of the plants in the University garden in which many are attractively illustrated, including 34 Cape plants" (Gunn & Codd, Botanical exploration of Southern Africa pp. 26-27)."Paul Hermann was director of the Leiden Botanical garden from 1679-1695. He did excellent, vigorous work in depicting his plants, and one group of his drawings of Ceylon plants, made in the second half of the 17th century, had an interesting history. They were carefully preserved for many years by a series of collectors, one of whom finally brought them to the attention of Linné in 1745. Linné found them so exciting that he based his 'Flora Zeylandica' on them in 1747 ." (Hunt 378). Thousands of specimens from outside the Netherlands were in cultivation towards the end of the century and the garden attained world-wide reknown. The attractive allegorical frontispiece shows the Leiden botanical garden. Bound in cancelled leaves C3 and Aa7 as usual (see Hunt). At the outer margin 2 plates partially cut at plate edge.         Pas kaart van de Zee kusten van Guiana Cabo Noord en Rio Amano

Johannes van Keulen, Amsterdam 1687 - A very fine copy of this excellent and very early chart of French Guiana. This beautifully-finished map was published by innovative Dutch cartographer and publisher ,Johannes van Keulen, in the 1687 second edition of the third volume his Sea-Atlas [or Zee-Fakkel ]. The chart concentrates on Cayenne (now the capital of French Guiana) and coast to the north-west almost to the border with Surinam and south-east to the border with Brazil and beyond to the Rio Arowary, close to the mouth of the Amazon. There are two insets: one a close-up of the island of Cayenne, and the second of the French fort of the same name. The French made a number of abortive attempts to colonise the region, in 1604 and 1643, and it was not until 1664, when France finally succeeded at establishing a permanent settlement at Cayenne. As with most parts of the region, the area changed hand a number of times, between the French, Dutch and English, before being finally restored to France. Cf. Koeman IV, Keu109B. Copper-engraved map, full contemporary hand-colouring, heightened with gold.
