Anatomia et contemplatio nonnullorum naturae invisibilium secretorum comprehensorum epistolis quibusdam scriptis ad illustre inclytae Societatis regiae Londinensis Collegium

Leiden (Paris), Cornelius Boutesteyn, 1685. Square 4to (19.6 x 15.0 cm) First edition. 78 pp., 18 fine engravings in the text. Modern vellum with printed paper label on the spine.l The title of this work roughly translates into "Anatomy and contemplation of the nature of invisible secrets included in letters written to the illustrious company of the famous King's College, London". It contains Van Leeuwenhoek's letters 43, 42 and 38 (Dobell' s numbers), in that order. These are titled, respectively, "D. D. omni observantiae cultu mihi prosequendi ac devenerandi"; "De structura cerebri diversorum animalium: de generatione pituitae, mucinarium seu blennae, humoris crystallini in oculis hominum, moxae, calcis arthriticorum, morbi leprosorum, squammarum in anguillis", and "De generatio ranarum...", the latter thus being of herpetological interest, the others mainly dealing with human anatomy. The last letter was presented to the Royal Society by the famous British architect, Christopher Wren. The letters are unnumbered, and the pagination is continuous. This is an extremely rare first Latin translation from Dutch, of the letters contained in the original text of Dobell 5, published in the same year. Van Leeuwenhoek had those translations prepared, to be able to communicate with the scientific community outside of The Netherlands. Indeed, he became famous as the first and foremost microscopist of his time. Norman, 1316. Not in Heirs of Hippocrates, nor Osler. Dobell mentions: "my own copy is the only one I have seen." No copy in the British Museum or any library in Britain. No copy can be found in COPAC. On the continent, one copy is held by the University of Amsterdam, and in Germany in Greifswald, Weimar, Munich, and Augsburg. There are six copies in US libraries (Yale, Smithonian, Emory, Chicago, Illinois and Maryland) and another in the National Library of Medicine. Extremely rare and interesting first Latin translation. Dobell, 21; Garrison & Morton, 67 (part).

- 12mo (70 x 130 x 65 mm). (8), 664 pp. 423, (1) pp. 302, (5), 5, 8 pp. With engr. frontispiece and 3 engr. title pages. Contemp. brown calf. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Pretty Lüneburg-printed Luther Bible in small pocket format, bound as a "dos-à-dos-à-dos binding", a superlative triplet version of the dos-à-dos binding. The latter is described as "a binding structure in which two separate books are bound together such that the fore edge of one is adjacent to the spine of the other, with a shared lower board between them serving as the back cover of both". Von Arnim states that "this gimmick first seems to have appeared in the 1560s [.] Gruel noted that these curious bindings almost exclusively contain Protestant functional writings. It would seem that sober Protestantism here yielded to a luxurious whim, as it were, a substitute for the Catholics' bibliophile Books of Hours. Dos-à-dos bindings were particularly popular in England, especially for the small-format editions of the New Testament and Psalms so common there [.] Of nine dos-à-dos bindings in the British Museum, six are embroidered" (Bibl. Otto Schäfer, no. 79). "These twin bindings, or dos-à-dos bindings, were used frequently for religious books of the 17th and 18th century, but very few have survived" (Sonntag, Boerner Cat. 21, no. 63: an embroidered English dos-à-dos binding). Bound between the first and second parts (Genesis through Song of Solomon; Prophets) is the third part (New Testament), with shared inner boards. A few old ms. notes; first part wants flyleaves. Some professional repairs to the binding's extremeties. VD 17, 23:672727F. Darlow/Moule 4221. Württ. Bibelslg. E 906 (dos-à-dos binding; Josias Lorck copy). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

- Bidloo (1649-1713) war u. a. The value lies chiefly in the 105 fine copperplate engravings drawn by G. de Lairesse". I, 526 f; Choulant, Anatomische Abbildungen 95; Herrlinger, Geschichte der medicin. Abb. II, 60 ff.

        Monumenta Omnia Mathematica, quae extant

      - ex traditione Francici Maurolici. Woodcut printer’s device on title, numerous woodcut illus. in the text, & a woodcut vignette on verso of final leaf. 4 p.l., 296 pp. Folio, cont. English panelled calf (joints very carefully repaired, first leaf & final leaf with some light browning around edges), spine richly gilt. Palermo: C. Hesperi, 1685. First edition of Maurolico’s important edition of Archimedes’ works, based upon an earlier partial edition by Borelli (Messina: 1670-72), which was almost completely lost. Maurolico’s edition was largely prepared in 1534 and 1547-50 and remained in manuscript for many years after his death. Maurolico’s "method of redaction is suggested in the preface. After enumerating and summarising Archimedes’ works, Maurolico states that he has tried to make the works more easily intelligible by adding many lemmas, by demonstrating many things omitted by Archimedes, and by treating of the centres of gravity of solids Maurolico does not hesitate to re-arrange Archimedes’ master work, the De Sphaera et Cylindro, often substituting what he claims to be a better proof or enunciation for that of the original It is, however, in the De Aequeponderantibus that Maurolico makes his most drastic re-arrangement of the Archimedean material and also his most important contributions to mathematics "Maurolico organises the treatise (which he calls De Momentis Aequalibus) and his own additions into four books. The first deals with general principles relating to centres of gravity and equilibrium. The following three books concern the determination of centres of gravity in plane figures; paraboloids; and spheres, pyramids, prisms, conoids and other solids. Although Archimedes had apparently known how to find the centres of gravity in various solids, none of his proofs was extant in the sixteenth century. Maurolico sought to remedy this deficiency by applying the Archimedean method of moments to the problem. This he did with considerable success "Although the long delay in publishing the Maurolico Archimedes precluded its entry to the mainstream of mathematical development, the importance of its author’s studies was acknowledged by Federico Commandino."–Rose, The Italian Renaissance of Mathematics, p. 167. A really nice copy. Two faintly bleached out library stamps in blank portions of title. Two bookplates removed. ? Riccardi, I, 43-44–(with a list of the contents). Premiere edition

Lyon: 1685. 12mo (144 x 75 mm). [12], 206, [16] pp. Engraved arms of the dedicatee Marin Curty as headpiece, two woodcut initials, type ornaments. A bit dust-soiled.Contemporary French speckled calf, spine gold-tooled, edges red-sprinkled (worn).***A question-and-answer guide to classical mythology for children, ancestor of the online quiz for 10-year-old mythology nuts. The gods and heroes are listed, in extra-large type, under their Roman names only. "Who was Jupiter? ... What was the fate of Oedipus? … Why is Janus represented with two faces?" To judge by this work, the pupils of the Grand Siècle were spared neither the philanderings of deities nor the cruelties of mortals. The author was a jurist, diplomat and lexicographer who wrote a natural history of the Antilles and a popular French dictionary (Dictionnaire général et curieux contenant les principaux mots et les plus usitez en la langue françoise), issued the same year as this very rare work for children. A still handy example of the vogue for secular catechisms in late 17th-century France. Rare, no copies in US libraries and a mere handful in France. Cioranescu 59870.

L’ARTE DI RESTITUIRE A ROMA LA TRALASCIATA NAVIGATIONE DEL SUO TEVERE Divisa in tre parti.

Roma, nella Stamperia del Lazzari Varese, 1685. In folio (mm. 395x250), 2 opere in 1 vol., p. pelle bazana coeva (antiche scritte a mano e piccole macchie ai piatti), dorso a cordoni con tit. oro, 91 cc.nn. + 15 pp.num. (per l?'aggiunta di ONORATI Fr. Maria ?"Sac. Congreg. Riparum Tyberis Romana Remunerationis pro illustriss. D. Cornelio Meyer Memoriale?". Romae, Typ. Rev. Cam. Apost., 1685). (Colonna Traiana) e 4 a doppia pag. Collin, G.B. Frontispiece with skilful paper restoration at inner and lower margin not affecting text or engraved area, title leaf with minor paper restoration all round just affecting printed frame at head, minor restoration in gutter of prelims to lower stab holes; spill-burns to C6 and 2L5 touching frame but no text, blemish to D3 affecting a word either side, small tear at upper margin O3 (binding shop accident) not affecting text, paper flaw at upper outer corner of U6 and *3E4 not affecting text, single wormhole in lower margin below the text running from 2I2 onwards and widening to three by end; upper outer corner of 2L6 torn away not affecting text, spill-burns to 3F4?-5 affecting a couple of individual letters but not the sense, one bifolium (3I3?-4) slightly shorter and probably supplied from another genuine copy, paper flaw at foot of gutter to 3V2 not affecting text, 2 closed tears at foot of 3Y1 running about 18 lines up (no loss), a few fairly minor spots, stains, and insignificant marginal tears as often, overall a good complete copy. Fourth folio, and the last of the 17th-century editions of Shakespeare's works, edited by John Heminge (d. 1630) and Henry Condell (d. 1627), the seven plays added by Philip Chetwin (d. 1680), publisher of the Third Folio. A reprint of the ill-fated Third Folio, this edition was issued by Henry Herringman in conjunction with other booksellers, and has three settings of the title-page. Of the seven additional plays, also included in the Third Folio, only Pericles is today recognised as the work of Shakespeare. In common with the Third, the Fourth Folio dropped the final "e" from Shakespeare's name, a spelling that persisted until the beginning of the 19th century. The printer of the Comedies has been identified from the ornaments as Robert Roberts. Although this is the only edition in which each play does not start on a fresh page, it is in a larger fount and more liberally spaced than the three earlier editions. (The two pages of L1 are set in smaller type, presumably after the discovery that some text had been omitted.) The Fourth Folio remained the favoured edition among collectors until the mid-18th century, when Samuel Johnson and Edward Capell argued for the primacy of the First Folio text.
