"Bidloo, professor of anatomy at The Hague, was at one time physician to William of Orange. An English contemporary, William Cowper, furnished his Anatomy of humane bodies almost completely with engravings plagiarized from this book by Bidloo, who promptly and publicly excoriated Cowper in a published communication to the Royal Society. Before the days of copyright, this is one of the most famous instances of plagiarism in the history of medicine. These plates are considered among the finest illustrations of the Baroque period,." (Heirs of Hippocrates 667). "The value of Bidloo's 'Anatomia' lies chiefly in the 105 fine copperplate engravings drawn by Gerard de Lairesse, and engraved by Pieter van Gunst. These are masterpieces of Dutch baroque art" (Garrison-M). "One of the finest anatomical atlases of the Baroque period. The 105 plates were drawn by the painter Gerard de Lairesse, under whose influence the French style of Poussin and Lorraine became dominant in Holland. For Lairesse, the anatomical illustrations Bidloo asked him to undertake were an occasion for an artistic meditation on anatomy: he displayed his figures in an emotional, almost tender manner, contrasting the raw dissected parts with the full, soft surfaces of uncut flesh, placing flayed, bound figures in ordinary nightclothes or bedding, setting ordinary household objects such as books, jars or cabinets in the same scene as cut-up torsos or limbs, and in one plate showing a fly crawling on an opened abdomen. His illustrations brought the quality of Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration, and gave a new, darker spritual expression to the significance of the act of dissection. According to the most recent scholarship, the plates were probably engraved by Abraham Bloteling, inventor of the rocker tool for mezzoprint engraving." (Norman 231) "The book took six years to make, and it was not a best seller, even by 17th-century standards. The publisher probably sold the plates to try to recoup some of his losses. But today, the 100 copies still in existence are the prized treasures of the world's great academic libraries, among them Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale and Vassar" (Vassar College Libraries). *Wilhelm Gottlieb Tilesius von Tilenau (1769-1857) was a German naturalist, explorer, physician, draftsman and engraver.         The Lady Isabella

London: Sold by Alex Browne at ye blew balcony in little Queen Street, 1685. Mezzotint. Counterproof impression printed in reverse. Printed on watermarked laid paper. Closely trimmed outside platemark as usual. A nice impression in excellent condition. Image size: 12 7/16 x 9 ¾ inches. An extremely rare counterproof by Alexander Browne, the father of English mezzotint engraving. During the eighteenth century, England became the heart of the mezzotint trade, producing some of the most celebrated engravers and the most beautiful prints that the medium has ever witnessed. Invented in Germany in 1642, mezzotint engraving quickly became popular throughout Europe as a method of reproducing oil paintings. It was eagerly adopted by English printmakers, who instituted so many technological improvements that the method became known as "the English manner". English mezzotints were eagerly collected by European connoisseurs; and continental engravers traveled to England to study the technique. One of the earliest and most important English mezzotint engravers is the printseller Alexander Browne. Although it is unclear whether Browne was the engraver of his prints or simply the publisher, his series of portraits are some the earliest and most accomplished mezzotints produced in England during the seventeenth century. According to Walpole, in 1683 Browne obtained a patent for fourteen years to publish one hundred mezzotints after portraits by Van Dyck and Lely. He seems only to have published them until the death of Charles II, in February of 1685, after which there is no record of his movements. Regarded as the father of the English mezzotint, Browne's important portraits introduced the art of mezzotint into England. This rare print is a portrait of Lady Isabella (1676-1680), the daughter of James, the Duke of York, and Mary of Modena, after a painting by Lely. It is a counterproof, or reverse print, and therefore extremely rare. The practice of reverse printing was rarely used in England, and Browne was one of the few engravers to employ this method of printing. Counterproof, or reverse printing was achieved by taking a second impression from a newly printed image. This process resulted in a slightly lighter impression and reversed text. According to Chaloner Smith, Browne was in the habit of making a few counterproofs of each print which were typically not sold to the public. A true collector's piece this remarkable image is an extremely rare impression by one of the most important English mezzotint engravers. Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits , p. 105-107, no. 15, counterproof state not described.

Nordin 2005. Collijn sp. 221f. Lindberg, Swedish Books, 30. Klemming, Ur en antecknares samlingar, s. 75. Warmholtz 8000.

Copper engraving, on two joined sheets, after Van der Meulen. Titled in French and Latin. In excellent condition. Some infill work along the bottom margin. Image size: 18 1/2 x 38 5/8 inches. A striking contemporary view of Gray in Franche-Comte, by the celebrated court painter Van der Meulen. This fine view shows the town of Gray in Franche-Comte, built on the banks of the Saône River. One of the most important trading towns in Franche-Comte, the region became a possession of the Spanish Hapsburgs in 1556. Although some of the region's fortified towns were occupied by France during the Wars of Religion, peace and prosperity continued until the advent of the Thirty Years War, when the region was ravaged by both Catholics and Protestants. Louis XIV conquered Franche-Comté in 1668 and again in 1674 and finally obtained its cession from Spain. Van der Meulen's striking image depicts the king and his armies entering the town after they successfully re-conquered the region. Adam Frans Van der Meulen was a landscape and genre painter, who specialized in battle scenes, and his early works, i.e. those from the years before he left for Paris (the earliest dated work is from 1653) are mainly cavalry skirmishes in the manner of his teacher Pieter Snayer. After he moved to Paris, the character of his work changed and became more ceremonial. He now specialized in large topographical views and military scenes and in royal journeys, processions and receptions. His most important task was to accompany the king on his many campaigns during the wars of conquest waged in the 1660s and 1670s against, inter alia the Spanish Netherlands, and as Peintre de conquêtes du roi officially to portray the memorable sieges, battles and conquests of le Roi Soleil in large-scale canvases or cartoons which were later transformed into tapestries. Van der Meulen was born in Brussels, where he was baptized in 1632. In 1646 he was apprenticed to the battle painter Pieter Snayers. In 1651 he became a master in the Guild of St. Luke in Brussels but by 1663 he had moved to Paris where he joined a group of Netherlandish artists associated with the French painter Charles Le Brun (1619-90), who not only was Premier peintre du roi, but also (from 1663) director of the Parisian tapestry manufactory Manufacture royale des Gobelins. Van der Meulen quickly became a protégé of Le Brun, and on his recommendation Van der Meulen was appointed court painter to Louis XIV on 1 April 1664 and at the same time became Le Brun's collaborator in the tapestry manufactory. In 1673 he was accepted as a member of the Académie royale de Peinture et de Sculpture without any obligation to submit a morceau de réception; in 1681 he became conseiller and in 1686 premier conseiller. He died as a highly esteemed artist in the Hôtel des Gobelins 15 October 1690.

Single folded leaf bound into recent marbled boards, printed paper title label to spine, light soiling and a few minor stains, moderate edgewear and a few tiny tears. A well-preserved copy of a rare item. * Only edition. The anonymous author calls for the redefinition of the "pernicious and inseparable" common-law crimes of forgery and perjury as statutes, and thus felonious. This distinction would allow for the dispensing of capital sentences instead of the "minute punishment" of the pillory, fines or imprisonment, which "seldom produces any other effect than barely to make the Criminal the more incorrigible, and proves many times but as Sawce to craving Stomachs, preparing them the better to devour and consume the next dainties they can meet with" (2). OCLC locates 4 copies, none in North America (British Library, Cambridge University, National Library of Scotland, University of Wales, Lampeter), the ESTC adds 2 more (Bodleian Library, Dublin Honourable Society of King's Inns). English Short-Title Catalogue R41280.

[Franche Comté] Dole prise dans la premiere conqueste que le Roy a faite de la franche Comté en 1668 [Dôle, taken in the first conquest that the King made in Franche-Comté]

Paris: distribuë par l'Auteur, en l'Hostel des Manufactures des Gobelins, et en la rue St.Jacques, 1685. Copper engraving, on two joined sheets, by Van Huctenburg and A.F. Baudouinst, after Van der Meulen. Titled in French and Latin. Painted from life by the artist who accompanied Louis XIV on his campaigns, Adam Frans Van der Meulen depicted in this wonderful panorama a post-battle view of Dôle, the capital of Franche-Comté, and the handsome surrounding region. In it, Louis XIV and his brother survey the city they've won from a hilltop. There is actually no unpleasant evidence of military activity except for some smoke billowing from the far side of Dôle. Van der Meulen was born in Brussels in 1632. In 1646 he was apprenticed to the battle painter Pieter Snayers. In 1651 he became a master in the Guild of St Luke in Brussels but by 1663 he had moved to Paris, where he joined a group of Netherlandish artists associated with the French painter Charles Le Brun (1619-90), who not only was Premier peintre du roi , but also (from 1663) director of the Parisian tapestry manufactory Manufacture royale des Gobelins . Van der Meulen quickly became a protégé of Le Brun, and on his recommendation Van der Meulen was appointed court painter to Louis XIV on 1 April 1664 and at the same time became Le Brun's collaborator in the tapestry manufactory. In 1673 he was accepted as a member of the Académie royale de Peinture et de Sculpture without any obligation to submit a morceau de réception ; in 1681 he became conseiller and in 1686 premier conseiller . He died as a highly esteemed artist in the Hôtel des Gobelins 15 October 1690.

A New Systeme of Geography, designed in a most plain and easy method, for the better understanding of that science. Accommodated with new mapps, of all the ... countreys in the whole world. With geographical tables explaining the divisions in each mapp. By John Seller, hydrographer to the king]

[London]: Sold at his shop on the West-side of the Royal Exchange, 1685. Small octavo. (5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches). Letterpress text: 1-80 pp.only. 1 engraved additional title, 1 uncoloured engraved plate, with attached volvelle, 30 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps, 28 (of 30) leaves of engraved text (printed recto only, as issued). (Lacking letterpress text leaves after p.80, engraved title cut to plate edge and neatly laid down). Contemporary mottled calf, expertly rebacked to style with the spine in five compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second Provenance: early indistinct inscription on front pastedown (concerning original cost of the book, see note below). The first edition of John Seller's very rare work: one of the earliest English world atlases. The letterpress title-page confirms that this is the 1685 first edition of Seller's New Systeme. .. Lord Wardington noted that "Seller's pocket atlases are among the earliest 'English' world atlases; they are superior in execution and content to contemporary rivals, such as Jonas Moore's A New Systeme of the Mathematicks (London, 1681) or Morden's Geography Rectified (London, 1680, with later editions) and are appreciably rarer, the several editions of the New Systeme extant in only a handful of copies." This assessment is confirmed by OCLC who list only 6 copies of this first edition (Clements Library; Yale, University of Alberta, British Library [2 copies], Bayerische Staatsbibliothek), and by auction records. No copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years. Only five copies of any edition of this work are listed as having sold. Lord Wardington's 1695 edition was withdrawn from the sale and presented to the British Library by Lady Wardington. Seller seems to have sold the atlas in much the same way as the great Dutch composite atlases of the period, as Lord Wardington notes "the New Systeme seems to have been made up to order," a maximum of 110 pages (numbered 1-30, 33-112) of text is recorded. The number of maps varies: one of "the British Library's examples originally contained twenty-seven maps (four are missing, and one extra added), while the Library of Congress' example contains fifty-one maps." Contemporary confirmation of Lord Wardington's suspicions seems to be given here by the early inscription apparently shows that the cost of the book was calculated according to the number of maps it contained, along with the 'desc.' or number of text leaves that the purchaser chose to accompany the maps. A comparison with Rodney Shirley's description of one of the British Library copies (T.Sell-7a, which has only 23 maps) shows that the present example has 11 maps not in the BL copy, but also does not include four maps which are: one of 'The XVII Provinces', a second of 'the city of Hamburgh', a third of 'Lesser Tartaria' and a fourth 'Morea'. The fullest listing of maps which were offered for inclusion in the various editions of A New Systeme is given by Phillips (vol.IV, # 4267) where a numbered list of the 58 maps in the Library of Congress's 1690 edition is given. A comparison with that list shows that the present copy includes the following maps (identified by number): 1-3, 7-11, 13-14, 16-21, 23, 24, 27, 28, 30-34 and 51. The Phillips list does not include the 'A New Mapp of the World' or 'A Mapp of the World Shewing what a Clock it is', 'A Mapp of the Kingdom of England and Wales', 'Spaine' - all of which are also in the present atlas. Betz Africa 134; cf. Phillips Atlases III, 3450 (1685 edition with 51 maps) & IV, 4267 (1690 edition with 58 maps) ; cf.         HISTOIRE DE LA CONQUESTE DE LA FLORIDE, PAR LES ESPAGNOLS, SOUS FERDINAND DE SOTO

Paris, 1685. 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt extra. Corners bumped and rubbed. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown, later bookplates on rear pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. The first available edition of this extremely important narrative, preceded by the 1557 original (of which only four copies are known), and two issues published by Richard Hakluyt in 1609 and 1611, in English. The identity of the Gentleman of Elvas has remained a mystery. His narrative is the primary source for information concerning the De Soto expedition of 1539-43, the first investigation by Europeans of the southeast region of the United States. De Soto landed on the west coast of Florida in 1539, marching north through Georgia and west to Mobile Bay. His party reached the Mississippi River in 1541 and went perhaps as far as the present Oklahoma-Arkansas border. Returning east, De Soto died and was buried in the Mississippi. The survivors floated to the Gulf and made it to Mexico.

The history of the crusade; or, the expeditions of the Christian Princes for the conquest of the Holy Land. Written Originally in French, by the Fam'd Mounsieur Maimbourg. Englished by John Nalson, LL.D

London: Printed by R.H. for Thomas Dring, 1685. [20], 304, 307-410pp. Contemporary blind-ruled speckled calf, neatly rebacked to style with new contrasting morocco lettering-piece, gilt. A little rubbed, with slight loss to extremities. Small paper flaws or rust-holes to text of M1, T2 and LL2. Occasional marginal worming, with wormtrack to signatures Ss-Uu, all without loss of sense. Ink inscription (Liber Boyd Buisson?) to FFEP. Louis Maimbourg (1610-1686), French Jesuit historian. First published as L'Histoire des Croisades pour la deliverance de la Terre sainte (Paris, 1675) and dedicated to the 'Sun King' Louis XIV, this exhaustive history of seven Crusades is an unapologetically Catholic view of the second millennia conflicts between Western Christendom and Islam. This translation by Anglican clergyman and historian John Nalson (bap. 1637, d.1686) is dedicated to Henry Hyde, second Duke of Clarendon who was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in the year of its publication.         Mr. William Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies. Fourth Folio.

London: Printed for H. Herringman, and are to be sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders, 1685. First edition of the Fourth Folio of Shakespeare. Bound in full brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine. The fourth folio is the final and most magnificent of the four 17th-century folio editions of Shakespeare's plays. The Fourth Folio "contains the additional seven plays that first appeared in the 1663 edition [including the authentic Pericles, Prince of Tyre], as well as a good deal of correction and modernization of the text designed to make it easier to read and understand" (Folger's Choice). Old paper repair to verso of title-page, several other very minor paper repairs. Some browning and minimal staining, a very good example. As in some other copies, as Greg notes, number of errors in signatures have been corrected in manuscript, presumably at the time of publication. Although there is no accurate census of the number of folios still extant today, it is believed that copies of each printing number only in the hundreds. The rarest form of the fourth folio. This is the rare Knight and Saunders issue, with their names on the title-page. W. W. Greg observes, "Since the title is entirely reset it is presumably a cancel printed after the volume was complete and perhaps republished, and designed for those copies that Herringman chose to issue through his own booksellers" (Greg III, 1121). In 1684, Herringman turned over the retail side of his business to Francis Saunders and his partner Joseph Knight. Fourth Folios almost invariably bear the imprints "Herringman-Brewster-Bentley" or "Herringman-Brewster-Chiswell-Bentley. The Shakespeare Folios "have an aura of book magic about them. For a bibliophile it is a volume devoutly to be wished for and rarely attained; to a library it is a crowning jewel of a collection Shakespeare, indeed, is a name to conjure with. No lengthy explanation as a good deal of corres are needed; he is simply the most distinguished author in the English language" (Legacies of Genius, 36).

Historia reformationis Polonicae, in qua tum reformatorum, tum antitrinitariorum origo & progressus in Polonia & finitimis provinciis narrantur. [Bound with] Bibliotheca anti-trinitariorum, sive catalogus scriptorium, & succincta narration de vita eorum auctorum…Christophori Chr. Sandii.

Freistadt [Amsterdam]: Johann Aconius [Henricus Wetstein], 1685. First edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Small 8vo. pp. [16], 304. This copy lacks the 2 leaf ?"Addenda & Emendata (apparently common according to the pagination recorded for many copies). S. Lubieniczki (1623-1675) was a Polish Socinian/Unitarian pastor and scholar. His ?"Historia?" is an account of the Polish Reformation, especially the Polish Socinians or Minor Reformed Church (Polish Brethren) from it?'s origins in the 16th century up till the expulsion of the Brethren from Rakow (1638). Material is also included about events in outlying areas such as Prussia, Lithuania, Transylvania and the Ukraine. Lubieniczki died leaving his work incomplete. The last two chapters are written by a different author. In a review of the 1995 English translation Paul W. Knoll says that this work is ?"a comprehensive treatment of an extraordinarily complex movement. It is unique in Polish historiography and in some ways unmatched by any other confessional history.?" [See Sixteenth Cent. Journ. XXVIII/2 (1997) p. 568]. [VD17 - 23: 237280Q; Graesse IV, p. 270; Bibliographia Sociniana 2069]. This copy is bound with Christoph Sandius?'s ?"Bibliotheca anti-trinitariorum?" (1684). pp. [16], 296. Contents include an Antitrinitarian bibliography and a collection of important historical documents. [VD17 - 23: 237261K; Graesse VI, p. 263; Bibliographia Sociniana 3116]. Both books were published or edited by Benedykt Wiszowaty (1650-1704), the great grand son of Faustus Socinus. The printer is Henricus Wetstein of Amsterdam who worked under the false imprint: ?"Freistadii apud Johannem Aconium.?" [See Weller, Druckorte I, pp. 181-182]. The two works are bound in sturdy 19th century paste paper boards showing rubbing and wear. The front blank fly-leaf is carefully repaired along the bottom edge. Interior pages contain scattered spotting, foxing and age-toning ?- generally mild. The book was released from the Andover-Newton Theological Institution and a book plate is pasted to the inside front cover. The title page verso to the ?"Historia?" displays a light library stamp; the first leaf in the chapter index contains a small tear at the beginning of a couple lines of text (sealed and practically unnoticeable). Sandius?' ?"Bibliotheca?" is marked by occasional marginalia and periodic thin underlings in an early hand. [DONE].

OFENSA, Y DEFENSA DE LA LIBERTAD ECLESIASTICA. LA PRIMERA EN VEINTE Y QVATRO CAPITULOS, QUE MANDÒ PUBLICAR EL EXCELENTISSIMO SEÑOR DUQUE DE LA PALATA, VIRREY DEL PERÚ, EN DESPACHO DE 20 DE FEBRERO DE 1684. Y LA SEGUNDA ARMADA CON LOS ESCUDOS CATLICOS DE LA LEY, Y LA RAZON, QUE ESTABLECEN LOS DOMINIOS DE SU MAGESTAD, Y DICTÒ SU PROPRIA OBLIGACION AL EXCELENTISSIMO SEÑOR DR. D. MELCHOR DE LIÑAN Y CISNEROS, ARÇOBISPO DE LIMA

[Spain, 1685. Folio. Dbd. Occasional contemporary marginalia. 7 1/2-inch tear in four terminal leaves, repaired with early glue and archival tape, affecting but not obscuring text. Very good. A rare Peruvian work, with debated authorship and printing, documenting a major conflict between government and ecclesiastical authorities in Peru on issues of the Church's responsibility to the Indians. The text, written by or on behalf of Don Melchor Liñan y Cisneros, the authoritarian archbishop of Lima and interim viceroy of Peru between 1678 and 1681, attacks recent legislation by the current viceroy, Melchor de Navarra y Rocafull, Duke of la Palata, intended to protect Peru's indigenous people from abuses by the Church. The first portion of the volume reprints the new laws, which establish various new rights of Indians with respect to the Church, including the power of police to bring charges against ecclesiastics for abuses of Indians, pay for all Indian labor done for the Church, and no involuntary offerings forced from Indians during masses, festivities, etc. Liñan y Cisneros responds to this "offense" against "ecclesiastical liberty" with a letter and legal argument against this legislation and similar recent treatises on the subject directed against the Church. Manuscript notes in the John Carter Brown copy and in the copy seen by Vargas Ugarte suggest that, despite Liñan y Cisneros's printed signature at the end of the volume, the bulk of the text was composed by the attorney and legal scholar, Diego Andrés Montero del Aguila. While Vargas Ugarte lists the work as a Lima imprint in his IMPRESOS PERUANOS, he later wrote that the Viceroy had unsurprisingly not authorized the work for printing in Peru and that the Archbishop in turn circumvented his authority and had it printed by Fraso and López y Martinez in Spain. OCLC lists six copies, with four in the U.S., at Berkeley, Brown, the Graduate Theological Union, and the Newberry Library.
