Utopia, Written in Latin by Sir Thomas More, Chancellor of England; Translated into English

London: Richard Chiswell, 1684. Hardcover. Very good. First edition of this translation, by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1714; Scottish philosopher, historian, and Bishop of Salisbury). 8vo, [22], 206, with original rear blank (P4); front blank (A1) appears to have been replaced. Early, possibly original, boards, rebacked with recent new leather spine and not very sympathetic (bright white) new endpapers. Mild browning to edges of title page, which bears and early ownership signature (Henry Thomson), else very clean. Armorial bookplate of Sir Robert Hilyard, Baronet, on front pastedown. Brunet's translation is generally regarded as preferable to the first English translation, done by Ralph Robinson in 1551. Pforzheimer (742) notes that this translation "is in some respects much superior and certainly represents a more readable text except to those who enjoy the Tudor vigor of Robinson's version." ESTC R7176; Wing M2961; Sabin 50546. As explained in Printing and the Mind of Man (47) "Utopia is not, as often imagined, More's ideal state; it exemplifies only the virtues of wisdom, fortitude, temperance, and justice. It reflects the moral poverty of the states which More knew, whose Christian rulers should possess also the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity."

The Theory of the Earth: Containing an Account of the Original of the Earth, and of All the General Changes which it hath already undergone, or is to undergo, Till the Consummation of all Things. The Two First Books Concerning The Deluge, and Concerning Paradise

Printed by R. Norton for Walter Kettilby, London 1684 - Folio (12 3/4 x 8"). [20], 327, [1]pp. Contemporary full spotted calf with gold lettering and ruling to spine. Raised bands. Additional engraved title. Decorative initials."The Theory of the Earth" is Thomas Burnet's best known work. The first part was published in 1681 in Latin under the title "Telluris Theoria Sacra," and three years later in its English translation; the second part* appeared in 1689 (1690 in English). The book is a speculative cosmogony, in which Burnet suggested a hollow earth with most of the water inside until Noah's Flood, at which time mountains and oceans appeared. He calculated the amount of water on Earth's surface, stating there was not enough to account for the Flood. Thomas Burnet was to some extent influenced by Descartes who had written on the creation of the earth in "Principia philosophiae" (1644), and was criticized on those grounds by Roger North. The heterodox views of Isaac La Peyrère included the idea that the Flood was not universal; Burnet's theory was at least in part intended to answer him on that point. This work is illustrated with numerous in-text figs, and is complete with its two large folded engravings (Western and Eastern Hemispheres) depicting the world as it was known then.Binding rubbed along edges, with sporadic abrasion to leather. Closed tear along front joint. Ex-Library copy with bookplates on inside of front cover (University of Southern California) and stamp at lower margin of the first printed leaf. Previous owner's name in ink dated 1750 on front free endpaper. Small inscription in purple ink on title page (not affecting lettering). Binding in overall fair, interior in very good condition. * The two last books containing the burning of the world, and concerning the new heavens and new earth. Paris, Victor Masson, 1849-1852. 2 text volumes (8vo) and 1 table volume (4to). With 628 mostly woodengraved figures in text (except for 1 folding cross-section) and 17 numbered tables (16 folding). Volumes 1 and 2 in contemporary half morocco. Volume 3 (tables) in original printed paper wrappers with green cloth spine.

DSB X, pp. 221-222; Ward 1684; D.A. Young, Geological evidence for the age of the earth, p. 109. Complete first edition, including the often lacking tables, of a standard work on stratigraphy and paleontology by the famous Alcide d'Orbigny (1801-1857), "perhaps the most accomplished French paleontologist of the generation following Cuvier" (Young). In this work "he subdivided the Cretaceous System into 'stages', based on the notion that a typical fauna would be annihilated and replaced by a new fauna" (Young). He based his new classification of fossils on his research on geological strata, establishing the vital link between paleontology and stratigraphic geology that has proved so fruitful for both disciplines. Many contemporary geologists opposed his stratigraphic ideas, but despite this controversy he was appointed professor of paleontology at the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris in 1853. The work contains numerous woodengraved illustrations by E. Salle, which show an enormous variety of plant and animal fossils, from tiny invertebrates to gigantic dinosaurs. In very good condition, with only some faint foxing on the first and last few pages. Bindings of the text volumes slightly rubbed along the extremities and worn along the corners; paper wrappers of the tables slightly soiled, but still in good condition.

        Asia map - Homann.

Asia AsiaA decorative map prepared by Prof. Johann Matthias Haas (1684-1742), who produced a number of continental and regional maps for the atlases issued by the firm of Homann Heirs in 1744. Kamchatka has been reduced to its proper size vis ? vis Johann Christoph's version, while Siberia is drawn with an outline familiar to us today. The coastal waters of Japan remain a little haphazard with Hokkaido -Terra Efo, Yedso ou Yesfo- still attached to the mainland, but Sakhalin Island (Sagalien) is clearly marked. The Malay Peninsula has a very poor outline compared to earlier maps by Homann. Johor (Iohor) is located on the north-east coastline (somewhere in the vicinity of present day Kota Bahru). Tibet, which is named, bears the alternative title of "Dalai Lammae". Original handcolouring. Size: 47,6 x 55,3 cm. Price: ?625,- (excl. VAT/BTW).

Artist: Chatelain Henri Abraham ( - 1743 ) Amsterdam; issued in : Amsterdam; date: 1720 1684 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Very good; size (in cm): 36,5 x 92 - description: Map shows on 3 maps England, Scottland , Ireland and France with the genealogical tree of the royals - vita of the artist: Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684 - 1743) was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He lived consecutively in Paris, St. Martins, London (c. 1710), The Hague (c. 1721) and Amsterdam (c. 1728). He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720. Innovative for its time, the Atlas Historique combined fine engraving and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Some scholarship suggests that the Atlas Historique was not exclusively compiled by Henri Chatelain, as is commonly believed, but rather was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.

        Druckgraphiken "Le Printemps" und "L'Été" nach François Boucher (1703 - 1770) und Antoine Watteau (1684 - 1721).

Vermutlich frühes 20. Jahrhundert.

Venice & Naples, Francesco Benzi, 1684. - 4to. (4) pp. With a woodcut title vignette. Disbound. Extremely rare early newspaper, reporting on the communication between Shah Suleiman of Persia and Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland, shortly after the latter had liberated the besieged city of Vienna from the rival Ottoman forces. The remainder of the reports pertains to further military successes against the Turks (in the wake of which several European states were even emboldened to propose a coalition with Safavid Persia against the Ottoman Empire); there are also details about storms, earthquakes, and the sightings of comets, all of which were thought to bode ill to the Ottomans. - The Polish King's response to Suleiman's letter, though announced in the headline, is not printed here; the newspaper is complete thus with two conjoined quarto leaves, conforming with the single other known copy, kept at the Biblioteka Narodowa, Warsaw. - Slight browning; edges untrimmed. K. Zawadzki, Gazety ulotne polskie II, 1122. Cf. OCLC 82569381 (microform only).

Carte di guardia e tagli marmorizzati in coloritura omogenea. Alcuni volumi recano al piatto anteriore la scritta in oro ‘ M. De Prangins’. Ottime condizioni generali, salvo poche cuffie danneggiate.

      - DSB X, pp.
