ARBITRARY GOVERNMENT DISPLAYD TO THE LIFE, IN THE TYRANNICK USURPATION OF A JUNTO OF MEN CALLED THE RUMP PARLIAMENT. And more especially in that of the tyrant and usurper Oliver Cromwell.

London William Cademan 1683 - In which you have a clear view of the arbitrary, illegal, and unjust proceedings of those persons under the notion of liberty. And a compendious history of those times, faithfully collected; with the characters and lives of several of those usurpers, and a brief account of the several persons that suffered death and imprisonment under them, for their loyalty to the King and country. And by which may be seen the difference between arbitrary usurpers and lawful kings, reigning by, and according to the laws of the land. Illustrated with several brass cutts, representing the chief persons and passages therein. SECOND EDITION 1683, 12mo, approximately 150 x 85 mm, 5¾ x 3¼ inches, 4 engraved plates as required, 2 with 4 images each, pages: 92, 93-96 numbered as leaves, 97-156, 169-216, irregularities in pagination found in all copies, collated and guaranteed complete, bound in full old calf with blind rules and corner ornaments to covers, expertly rebacked with original blind decorated backstrip laid on, gilt lettered label, endpapers renewed at some time. Corners slightly worn, tiny scrape to lower cover, ink name on front endpaper and reverse of frontispiece, tipped onto reverse of frontispiece is an engraving of Cromwell from another book, frontispiece and plates faintly foxed, tiny rust hole in 1 page with loss of 2 letters, easily legible, light browning to some pages, occasional small light stain, small ink stain to 1 page, all still legible, from page 169 to the end many pages are cropped at the fore-edge, in some places shaving or losing the letter at the end or beginning of the line, almost all is easily legible. Binding tight and firm. A good copy of an anti Cromwell item. Our researches have uncovered nothing about the author who is not to be confused with the poet Thomas May who died in 1650. Most cataloguers give his dates as circa 1645-1718 and refer to him as Sir Thomas May, M. P. The date of the first edition is unknown as no copy is listed in the major libraries nor in ESTC. On the front pastedown is the small "JE" label which indicates that the book was sold in Christie's sale of the library of the Evelyn family and may have belonged to John Evelyn himself. It can be identified by the cropped fore-edges which are described in Christie's Catalogue of the Evelyn sale (Part III, No. 1005). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Apparently Imp.16mo in quarter sheets (i.e., gathered in fours), the watermark being a large crown and the chain-lines running horizontally; half-title not called for; leaf headed To the Reader and signed at end 'J. Shurley' follows title leaf; large historiated initials throughout; pp.[4]+167+[i (blank)]; A2, B - I, K - U, X - Y4. Two volumes bound in one, both printed in black letter and Roman type; nineteenth century full Russia bound after a seventeenth century model, the sides with gilt panel surrounded by broad leaf-and-flower rolls, the spine with four bands and five panels, ruled and tooled elaborately gilt and lettered direct in the second panel; decorative gilt rolls to edges of boards and turn-ins; a.e.g.; end-papers faced light brown. Later re-back, preserving the old backstrip; small puncture to leather (only) in centre of front board; in the the first part: some of the (mostly early) leaves cropped rather close at some lower edges with loss of about twenty catchwords and all or part of the last line of text on leaves A4, C4v, F1, F4r, H1, H2, and H4; paper flaws to blank fore-margin of U1, and blank lower margin of 2C4; small chip to blank lower margin of Z3; neat repair to lower margin of 2G1 with loss of two or three words on the recto; pen trials on blank margins of 2B2v and 2B3r; in the second part: strip lacking from blank lower margins of G3 and G4, due to an original paper fault; insignificant marking to a few scattered leaves in both volumes; otherwise nice. Two volumes evidently printed and issued separately, but in the same year, and usually found together. The First Part, translated from the Italian version of Oration Rinaldi, published in 1598, contains like its model only the first fifty of the sixty-eight chapters of the original Spanish romance, Historia del magnanimo, et invincibil principe Belianis de Grecia, by Jer¢nimo Fern ndez, published in Spain in 1545. It was not, and does not claim to have been, translated into English by Shirley, but is a reprint of the 1650 version translated by Francis Kirkman and reprinted several times up until 1673. Kirkman had added a Second and a Third Part, both written by himself, in 1664 and 1672, and the present Second and Third Parts consist of a paraphrase of them by Shirley, who writes in his remarks 'To the Reader' at the start of Part Two that the romance is "now illustrated and put into the newest dialect" by himself. He also added some rather bad verse. These Parts provide "the unique instance pf an English continuation of one of the Spanish romances" (Henry Thomas, Spanish and Portuguese Romances of Chivalry', CUP, 1920, pp.257-8.), and are set partly in England and Ireland. In this copy, possibly as always, p.38 of Part One has been misnumbered '93', and p.39 '38'; p.69 ends 'hap=' whilst p.70 begins 'happiness'; and gathering 2C has been laid-out wrongly in the forme, pp.200 and 201 following p.195, and pp.196 and 197, preceding p.202 (which is mis-numbered '102)', whilst the signature mark 'Cc2' appears correctly at the foot of p.197 but as the last leaf of the gathering and backed, of course, by the incorrectly numbered p.'101'. The front pastedown bears the engraved armorial bookplate of Henry Francis Lyte, writer of the hymns 'Abide with Me' and 'Praise my Soul the King of Heaven', and sometime tutor to Lord Salisbury. The verso of the second binder's blank bears the 1883 rubber ownership stamp of Alexander Gardyne. The first printing of the version by Shirley (not reprinted until 1703) and very scarce. COPAC records only the Oxford, National Library of Scotland, Leeds, and Lambeth Palace copies.         De cymbalis veterum, libri tres, in quibus quaecunque ad eorum nomina, differentiam, originem, historiam, ministros, ritus pertinent, elucidantur.Utrecht, Willem van Poolsum, 1703. 12mo. With an ornamental woodcut vignette on title, an engraved title-page by H. de Blois after Gerard Hoet (1648-1733) and 10 engraved plates. Contemporary vellum.

      - Kat. Musik Bibl. Paul Hirsch I, 300; Cat. Muziekhist. Museum Scheurleer I, p. 328. Second edition, and first and only edition printed in the Netherlands, of a treatise on the history of cymbals in classical antiquity. With meticulous precision, the author traces the etymology and history of cymbals, one of the oldest instruments in history. In the first of the three parts of the book, Lampe treats the name and origin of cymbals. The second part is devoted to the shapes of cymbals and the materials used. The third part investigates the use of the instrument in (religious) rites and plays. Several plates of antiques statues, objects and instruments illustrate the narrative.Friedrich Adolph Lampe (1683-1728) was a minister and professor at the University of Utrecht. De cymbalis, written when he was merely 17 and published in Bremen, forms an exception in his oeuvre, as all his writings concern theology and church history. His magnum opus, a history of the reformation in Hungary and Transylvania, was published in 1728.With several shelf marks pasted and written on the spine, a written shelf mark on the pastedown, an 18th-century(?) library inscription on the first endpaper and a library stamp on back of the title-page. Binding soiled but otherwise a very good copy.

Recent antique-style quarter leather (a little marked) and early marbled papered boards (rubbed and worn at the extremities); occasional small light tidemarks to some bottom margins; trifling signs of use and age, with some early pencilling on the endpapers (including a sketch of a castle on the front flyleaf); a very good copy.         Some Historical Memoires of the Life and Actions of His Royal Highness, The Renowned and most Illustrious Prince James Duke of York and Albany, &c.

printed for Daniel Brown at the Black Swan and Bible without Temple-Bar, and Tho. Benskin in St. Bride's Church yard Fleet-Street, London 1683 - (Only Brother to his most Sacred Majesty King Charles II.) From his Birth, Anno 1633, To this present Year 1682. Entred according to Order. Engraved frontispiece portrait. First Edition. Small 8vo. [148 x 96 x 12 mm]. [4]ff, 136pp. Bound c.1800 in red goatskin, the covers tooled in blind with a border of a fillet and repeated floral festoons and tassels, at the centre a large star-burst tool surrounded by fronds, floral sprigs and small stars. The spine divided into six panels with blind tooled bands, lettered in gilt in the second and third panels and dated at the foot, the others tooled in blind, the edges of the boards hatched in gilt, plain endleaves, gilt edges. (Slightly rubbed). Wing S.4513. Small hole in title and short closed tear in A3 and A4, apparently caused by paper flaws; a little light spotting or browning; a very good copy. The work is rare and remains anonymous, though no subject could ask for a more admiring author. It is offered as "a Compendium of the Actions of such a Prince, the Fame of whose Transcendent Vertues, and unequal'd Valour, has reached the utmost limits of the known World: a Prince who has highly Merited the good Esteem of all Mankind". But he goes on to acknowledge "tis no novelty that so much Worth and Goodness should be the Envy of Factious and Malitious Men (if the name of Men may be attributed to such) who envy Monarchy it self, and Impiously cast off all Obedience to the best of Kings". With the early ink signature of Ellen Owen at the head of the title and with the Porkington Library booklabel, with shelfmarks "Case 5, Shelf 5, No.115". The binding is almost certainly provincial, and the same floral festoon and tassle tools were used on the calf bound copy of Yalden (item 49). Both volumes show traces of manuscript beneath the endleaves. Porkington, or Brogyntyn Hall, is an ancient estate near Oswestry in Shropshire, successively homes to the Maurice, Owen and Ormsby-Gore families. Sir Robert Owen (1658-1698) was a noted bibliophile, and Sir Thomas Phillipps compiled and printed a catalogue of Manuscripts at Porkington, which included a considerable collection of early Welsh manuscripts now in the National Library of Wales.         The Book of Common Prayer / The New Testament / The Whole Book of Psalms /

John Hayes, Cambridge 1683 - ~TITLES CONTINUES: The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England, According to the Use of the Church of England: Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, Pointed as they are to be Sung or Said in Churches / The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Newly Translated out of the Original Greek, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, by His Majesties Special Command / The Whole Book of Psalms, Collected into English Metre, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others, conferred with the Hebrew ~Original full dark brown morocco, gilt triple panels with small tools, tulip and acorn motifs to boards - Cambridge binding. Gilt decor to board edges and turn-ins, worn. Rubbing to boards. Corners bumped. Raised bands and ornate gilt decor compartments to spine, rubbed and worn. Chipping and wear to top and base of spine. Outer front hinge almost fully cracked, but hinge holding due to fairly recent sturdy cloth tape reinforcement on inside. Tape repair to inner rear hinge, now perishing. Cracking to rear inner hinge and endpapers, but hinge still firm. All edges gilt, darkened. Marbled endpapers sometime added, now worn, with creasing to rear endpaper. Front marbled endpaper is missing the half not pasted to the boards. Large quarto (18 x 24cm). Three volumes with individual title pages, all printed by John Hayes in 1683, bound together with 59 plates bound in. The plates are taken from 'The Life of our Blessed Lord & Saviour, Jesus Christ. An Heroic Poem', by Samuel Wesley, first published 1693 and illustrated with 60 copper plates, of which all but one (possibly the title or half-title) were used for this volume. Only one plate is signed: St Matthew, by Nicholas Yeates (some small scenes of martyrdoms inserted in portraits of saints are initialled J. C.). It is likely that Yeates and the more famous William Fairthorne, 'recognised as the best native-born portrait engraver of the century', were part of a team which oversaw the 'extraordinary effort' of creating these dramatic and technically skilled 'complex traditional Catholic illustrations' (see Hodnett, 1978, 'Francis Barlow: First Master of English Book Illustration'). First two volumes unpaginated. Small Nashdom Abbey inscription on inside front board. The Book of Common Prayer contains prefatory material, including 'An Act for the Uniformity of Common Prayer', described in volume index but missing from copy described in ESTC. Small tear to the top of sig.B4 in Book of Common Prayer, with small loss to text. Plate of 'St. Iacobvs Minor' was once partially stuck to preceding page, with small loss to text and minor damage to image. Decorative initials. ~Additional notes: the marbled paper is plausibly late 17th-century, but of an unusual, straight herringbone design. John Hayes was apt to sell his publications gathered into bespoke volumes; we have been unable to locate another Common Prayer / New Testament / Psalter combination from his press. Darlow & Moule list two small 4to Bibles published by Hayes in 1683. They note that the first has a NT title page date of 1680, but don't mention the date of the second. The NT title page here is dated 1683. Size: (188), (294), (2), 106, (10)pp [Attributes: Hard Cover]

These sermons were collected into a work entitled “Certain Sermons or Homilies Appointed to Be Read in Churches.” Many of the thirty-three sermons are straightforward encouragements to the listener for them to read the Bible and pray every day. Others still are essentially treatises teaching church leaders theology, church history, and heresies within the Catholic Church. Originally, the homilies were published in two books beginning in 1547 concluding in 1571. While the sermons were written and delivered by numerous preachers, the writings in the second portion were mainly written by Bishop John Jewel, whose focus was on teaching on living a model Christian life. This rare 1683 printing of ‘Homilies’ includes the 39-Articles outlining the doctrines and practices of the Church of England.         1683 Miscellanea Curiosa MEDICINE Brain Surgery Melancholy Tumors Constellations

Norimbergae, : Sumptibus Wolfgangi Mauritii Endteri., Anno M.DC.LXXXIII. [1683]. Second edition. - 1683 Miscellanea Curiosa MEDICINE Brain Surgery Melancholy Tumors Constellations This rare 17th-century medical book, “Miscellanea Curiosa”, is a large collection of essays, treatises, and commentary by various physicians and medical experts from the 16th- and 17th-centuries. This annual periodical, beginning in 1670, was the world’s first trade journal to focus on medicine and natural sciences. It was founded by the Academia Naturae Curiosorum, who intended it to serve more as a medical journal. However, into the 17th-century the journal reintroduced more of a focus on other scientific disciplines. The Academy of Natural Sciences is the oldest natural sciences & medicine academy in the German-speaking world and is longest running natural science academy in the world. This volume is predominantly medical, dealing with human and animal anatomies, cures for disease, as well as identifying diseases through symptoms. The incredibly detailed, engraved title page lists six areas of study (Animalia, Mineralia, Vegetabilia, Anatomica, Chymia, Botanica) but the contents elude to an emphasis on medicine. Illustrations and contents include: • Instruments used in brain surgery • Animal skeletons, bones • Human organs, kidneys, lungs • Star and constellation charts • Asthma treatments • Conception – association between sperm and seed, fermentation • Infant colic • Epilepsy, convulsions • Suffocation from hysteria • Magnetism, animal • Melancholy, hypochondria • Tumors • Tuberculosis • Ulcers & hemorrhages Item number: #880 Price: $1250 GERBEC, Marko; et al Miscellanea curiosa sive Ephemeridum medico-physicarum Germanicarum Academiae Naturae Curiosorum, decuriae II. annus primus, anni M.DC.LXXXII. : Continens celeberrimorum virorum, tum medicorum, tum aliorum eruditorum in Germania & extra eam observationes medicas, physicas, chymicas, nec non mathematicas.         Relation du Voyage de Monseigneur l'evesque de Beryte, Vicaire Apostolique du Royaume de la Cochinchine [bound with] Relation abregee des mission et des voyages aux Royaumes de la Chine, Cochinchine, Tonquin & Siam

A finely bound copy of the first French accounts of Siam -that of Bourges-, with early relations on China, Vietnam, Tonkin and the East Indies. The Bourges is in its third edition and the Pallu in its second edition (all editions are rare). Father de Bourges (c.1630 - 1714) was a member of the first Catholic mission to Siam, arriving with his two fellow missionaries in 1662 to Ayuthaya. Since Siam was tolerant of other religions it became a safe place for the missionaries to establish themselves, and in 1664 a second group led by Monseigneur Pallu joined the fathers in Siam after a two-year journey overland. Francois Pallu (1626 - 1684) was a French Bishop and missionary in Asia and a founding member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society; he was originally recruited by Alexander de Rhodes and sent to the Far East along with other missionaries -namely La Motte. Both volumes together combine a considerable portion of the French knowledge of the East at the end of the 17th century. Distinguished provenance: Charles de Lorraine (possibly Charles III, Duke de Elbeuf), his signature on the first title page. Cordier Sinica, 827.

With an ornamental woodcut vignette on title, an engraved title-page by H. de Blois after Gerard Hoet (1648-1733) and 10 engraved plates. Contemporary vellum.

Kat.

It includes a double-page map of Amsterdam and illustrations of nearly all churches, monasteries and other religious institutions in Amsterdam, most notably the extraordinary great folding plate (ca. 52.5 x 69.5 cm) of the Botermarkt (now Rembrandtplein) with the magnificent domed Dutch Reformed Church that was never built. Le Long tells us (pp. 572-573) it was designed around 1700 by the lawyer Nicolaas Listingh (ca. 1635-post 1705), warden of Amsterdam's Oude Kerk, who built a wooden model at that time and had his drawings engraved on 17 whole and half-sheet copperplates by Daniel Stoopendaal (1672-1726). With library and deaccession stamps. Upper margin of preliminary pages with faint waterstain, folding plate with a tear where the folds cross, otherwise in very good condition.

Description de la Louisiane, nouvellement decouverte au Sud-Oüest de la Nouvelle France

First edition. Hennepin (1626 - c.1701) was a Franciscan missionary and explorer; he received orders to travel to Canada in an expedition approved by the powerful Minister Colbert and commanded by the King of France, accompanying Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, recently appointed to the governorship of Fort Frontenac, in Nouvelle France. In 1675 they set sail, the vessel carried also Francois de Laval de Montmorency, Bishop of Quebec, whose acquaintance proved useful in Canada. Upon making port in the French dominions of Canada, Hennepin began travelling without comfort throughout the region, providing us testimony of his explorer spirit, his luggage often being carried by dogs, at other times by canoe (Catholic Encyclopedia); these experiences gained him knowledge on the language and customs of the natives. In 1679, Hennepin joined the expedition led by La Salle through the Great Lakes; it is during this expedition that the Niagara Falls and the Saint Anthony Falls (Minneapolis) were discovered. In 1683, Hennepin's account was published, giving us with the first report of Niagara Falls, the first description of Louisiana, the first account of the headwaters of the Mississippi above the Wisconsin and the first map to name Louisiana. "This is the earliest printed account of La Salle's 1678-79 expedition to Illinois (and the building of Fort Crevecoeur), written by the explorer's close companion, Father Hennepin. It is the first to relate Hennepin's travels up the Mississippi, his discovery of the Falls of St. Anthony, and his captivity among the Sioux. It is also the first to describe Niagara Falls and to use the name Louisiana. The Description is considered Hennepin's most accurate work. A Recollect missionary who spent 11 years in America, he was one of the great pioneers of exploration in the western Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi." (Nebenzahl). The map, Carte de la Nouvelle France et de la Louisiane, is remarkably important, it's influence cannot be overstated as it is the first map to name Louisiana. Engraved by Roussel and embellished with a cartouche by N. Guerard. A rare book in the market, especially when complete with the map. Until 1999 (the Siebert Sale, Sotheby's New York, Oct 28, lot 660, u$s 48,875), no copy is registered at auction for over 25 years (AE). Nebenzahl offered a copy in 1979 for 5,500 u$s. Sabin, 31347.       Roma 1683 - Incisione in rame, mm 530x410. Copper engraving, mm 530x410. Highly fascinating example in extremely decorative antique colouring of this scarce map extending from Sumatra to the Bengala river and China river. Modern day countries include India, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaya. Showing the major rivers, mountains and cities. In bottom right corner a decorative cartouche, surmounted with two figures in Asian garb and a leopard. From Il Mercurio Geografico, printed by De Rossi. Giacomo Cantelli was born in Vignola, as he remarked with his signature, and was the first official cartographer of the Court of Modena, in 1685, when the Duke Francis II appointed him geographer. Very good condition with some minor marginal foxing and waterstaining cartografia.
