CLAVASIUM VULGO CHIVASSO

Amsterdam, Jochem Bormeester, Sander Wybrants vande Jouwer, 1694. With an engraved title-page, 48 irregularly numbered engraved plates (2 folding), and a half-page engraved table in text. Lacking 1 letterpress leaf, probably with a small engraved illustration. With: (2) HONDIUS, Henricus. Grondige onderrichtinge in de optica, ofte perspective konste, ...Amsterdam, Frederick de Wit, [1697?]. With a letterpress title-page, the engraved architectural title-page of the Latin editions, Institutio artis perspectivae , originally dated 1622, changed in the plate to 1647 and in manuscript to 1697. With 2 folding and 34 full-page engraved plates (1 with unnumbered figures and 35 with figures 1-43), showing diagrams and perspective views of geometrical figures and solids, rooms, a courtyard, staircases, furniture, buildings, interiors and gardens (of the prince of Orange), vaults, arches, galleries, a standing screw press for linens, a landscape with two figures, etc. 2 works in 1 volume. Small folio (30.5 x 20 cm). Early 18th-century overlapping sheepskin parchment (re-backed).

Ad 1: Cf. BAL 330-1 (1682 ed.); Berlin Kat. 2222-2223 (1657 ed. & ca. 1726/42 Ottens ed.); Fowler 54 (1686 Danckerts ed.); STCN (1 copy of 1694 Valk issue); WorldCat (2 copies of 1694 Valk issue); ad 2: Kemp, The science of art, pp. 111-112; New Hollstein, H. Hondius (1994), 259-294; Vagnetti EIIIb10; STCN (3 copies). Ad 1: Unrecorded 1694 issue, apparently the same edition as the 1694 Gerhard Valk issue, of a well-known and influential simple practical manual on the five orders of columns, written for the use of craftsmen by Symon Bosboom (1614-1662), Dutch architect and Amsterdam's official city stonemason ("stadts steen-houwer"). He discusses and extensively illustrates the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Composite (here called Roman) and Corinthian orders of column, along with doorways, arches, facades, etc., using them. Other illustrations show fireplaces, a church interior and exterior, geometrical diagrams, ornaments, etc.Bosboom had worked together with Jacob van Campen on the building of Amsterdam's new city hall, where he was responsible for the hundreds of capitals and column bases. Cornelis de Bie's Gulden Cabinet (Antwerp 1661) calls Bosboom the actual designer of the plastic details of the Amsterdam city hall.Ad 2: Rare Dutch edition, published by De Wit in 1697 and printed from the original plate of the 1622 first edition, of one of the most popular books on the art of perspective, by the engraver, publisher and expert on fortifications Henricus Hondius the elder (1573-1650). The book gives thorough review of the most famous earlier authors on perspective, including the founder of the genre Hans Vredeman de Vries. "The book provides a series of neatly conceived demonstrations of perspective in its abstract and applied forms and gives an original if brief analysis of the upwards convergence of tall verticals to a 'contre-poinct' when viewed with a plane tilted slightly toward the spectator" (Kemp, p. 112). The plates served also as models for subsequent authors: Joseph Moxon's Practical perspective (London 1670), for example, copies many of the present plates in mirror image. The Bosboom lacks 1 text leaf, but both works are otherwise in good condition, with some mostly marginal stains and some marginal restorations. The binding has been rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. Two 17th-century classics on architecture and perspective.

Heroica Carmeli Regula, A Sanctissimo Dei Propheta Elia

Cologne - Petrum and Alistorff, 1682. Cologne - Petrum and Alistorff, 1682 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Extremely scarce latin work, detailing the life of the prophet Elijah. With examples of the lives of John and Alberto, the patriarchs of Jerusalem. 'Newly translated by thewriter Vilipendiis Vindicata'. P. Beeckman, in religion Valentine de Saint Amand, was of the order of Carmelites. He born circa 1627 in Alost, taught theology at Louvain, then distinguished himself by his preaching in Antwerp, where he died January 10, 1687, at the age of 60. He took an active part in the fight that broke out at the end of the seventeenth century, between Bollandist scholars of Antwerp, an association of Jesuit scholars, philologists, and historians who studied hagiography and the cult of the saints in Christianity, and the Carmelites, concerning the origin and antiquity of the Carmelite Order. The history of this controversy took on enormous proportions and occupied Europe for several years. Beeckmans wrote works relating to these debates, including Heroica Carmeli. Elijah was a prophet in the Kingdom of Samaria during the reign of Ahab (9th century BCE), according to the Books of Kings. According to the Books of Kings, Elijah defended the worship of Yahweh over that of the more popular Baal, he raised the dead, brought fire down from the sky, and ascended into heaven in a whirlwind (either accompanied by a chariot and horses of flame or riding in it). In the Book of Malachi, Elijah's return is prophesied before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. Condition: In a full leather binding. Externally somewhat worn, particularly to the head and tail of the spine, but in remarkable condition for its age. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout with just the odd spot or instance of slight dusting. The free-endpapers are missing, and there is an ink signature and somesmall ink notes to the title and first page. Overall: VERY GOOD..

William Leybourn (1626-1719) mathematician, was in his time a distinguished land and quantity surveyor (although he began his working life as a printer). Such was his prestige, he was frequently employed to survey the estates of gentlemen, and he also helped to survey the remnants of London after the great fire of 1666. A prolific and eclectic author, his work The Compleat Surveyor, which was first published under that title in 1653 is regarded as a classic of its kind and (in collaboration with one Vincent Wing) the 1649 volume Urania Practica, was the first book in English devoted to astronomy. In our book in the address To The Reader (August 1681) Leybourn explains the sources for some of the text: 'Of the first tractate, the examples are all (or most of them) the same as are Mr. Wells in his Sciographia ... The second tractate was, partly a translation out of Magnon, by Mr. Thomas Gibson: and the third is partly Mr. Samuel Foster's ... The seventh tractate came to my hands in a Latine manuscript of Mr. Samuel Fosters, written with his own hand in anno 1640 ... The ninth tractate is wholly Mr. Samuel Fosters ... The tenth tractate also, is wholly his, and was ... transcribed from a manuscript of his, which he ... entituled Gold ... The eleventh tractate ... is Mr. Fosters also'. First published in Paris in 1625, The Rights of War and Peace established the system of modern public international law, based on the concept of "droit naturel," a morality-based law that superseded the personalities of individuals or nations. Grotius describes the situations in which war is a valid tool of law enforcement and outlines the principles of armed combat. Though based on Christian natural law, Grotius advanced the novel argument that his system would still be valid if it lacked a divine basis.
