1682 - A Paris, Chez Estienne Michallet, 1682. « Dechales's separate edition of Euclid, long a favorite in France and elsewhere on the Continent, never became popular in England » (SCHAAF, Biographical dictionary of mathematicians, I-576). PLAISANT EXEMPLAIRE en reliure d'époque. PLEASANT COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come: delivered under the similitude of a dream, wherein is discovered, the manner of his setting out, his dangerous journey, and safe arrival at the desired country.

London Printed fro Nathanael Ponder 1682 - The Most Well-Known Allegory Ever Written BUNYAN, John. The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come: delivered under the similitude of a dream, wherein is discovered, the manner of his setting out, his dangerous journey, and safe arrival at the desired country. London: Printed for Nathanael Ponder, 1682. The eighth edition. Twelvemo. [xii], 211, [1, 'Conclusion'], [4. publisher's ads] pp. Including frontispiece and two full page woodcuts. Early nineteenth-century blind-tooled sheep, spine blind-stamped in compartments and with gilt spine lettering, brown endpapers. Some wear to upper spine with a small crack. Marginal notes trimmed in a few places. Old rust mark to pp. 88-89. Some browning throughout. Overall, a very good copy of this very rare item. This is a genuine eighth edition. In the last thirty years there have only been two other Pilgrim's Progress published in 1682 to come up at auction and both of these were spurious with one claiming to be the 'Fifth edition' and the other the other the 'Ninth Edition". Harrison cites a New York Public Library catalog of 1929. which claims that the 'fifth' edition was not issued by Nathanael Ponder, and Sharrock records that the British Library copy of the same and that in the library of the Bunyan Meeting, Bedford, although bearing Ponder's name, "are totally unlike all other editions bearing his imprint." They are apparently printed in smaller type on inferior paper, with no shoulder noted. OCLC only records six copies of this actual 1682 (eighth) edition. The most well-known allegory ever written, this journey of the protaganist, Christian, is simultaneously filled with vivid and full human portraits of its characters. With over 100,000 copies sold in Bunyan’s lifetime, this "most perfect and complex of fairy tales" succeeded in attracting audiences from every Christian sect. Harrison pp. 39-40. Wing B-5568. According to Harrison there are only thirty-eight known copies of any complete edition prior to this one (of which OLCL locates six, of which three are imperfect); making this one of the forty-three earliest known copies and one of only four known complete copies of the eighth edition. Saducismus Triumphatus: or, Full and Plain Evidence Concerning Witches and Apparitions. In two parts. The first treating of their possibility. The second of their real existence. The second edition.

London, Thomas Newcomb, (1681-)1682. - 8vo. (18), 52, (12), 86, (2), 89-162, (6), 78 pp., 1 bl. f., (12), 273, (1), 67, (3), 5-45, (17), 20 (instead of 24) pp. (wants two final leaves of text, including an engraving on p. 23, as well as final errata leaf, all supplied in facsimile). With engr. frontispiece (Witch of Endor) and engr. six-piece title page. Contemp. calf (wanting rear cover). Second edition. - Joseph Glanvill's famous book on witchcraft, which first appeared posthumously in 1681. The editor is presumed to have been Henry More, who certainly contributed to the volume. This second edition is the first to include topical material on witchcraft in Sweden, supplied by Anthony Horneck (from a Dutch pamphlet of 1670). The book affirms the existence of witches with malign supernatural powers of magic, and attacks skepticism concerning their abilities. Glanvill likens these skeptics to the Sadducees, members of a Jewish sect from around the time of Jesus who were said to have denied the immortality of the soul. The book is also noted for the account of the "Drummer of Tedworth", an early poltergeist story. "Saducismus Triumphatus" strongly influenced Cotton Mather in his "Discourse on Witchcraft" (1689) and the notorious witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692/93. Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" (1693) is largely modeled after this book and its reports, particularly the material relating to the Mora witch trial of 1669. - Some browning as usual. Spine severely damaged; wants back cover and final 3 ff. Wing (2nd ed.) G823. Cf. Yale, Alchemy II, 501, no. 141.

- In-12° ; (6)-286 pp.-(1), plein veau brun, dos à nerfs orné, caissons or, fleurons or, titre or, tranches mouchetées rouge, rel. de l’époque, bel exemplaire.« Rarissime » (Turbet-Delof, 217).

Amsterdam 1682 - Superb hand color; lower margin extended with slight loss, else fine with strong impression on heavy paper. One of the earliest printed charts to specifically focus on the Carolina coast and one of the most attractive maps of the area overall. The chart extends from the Chesapeake Bay to northern Florida. While van Keulen used a variety of sources, not all of the identifiable, generally speaking, Spanish sources inform the more southerly areas, while in the northern part of the map, more accurate English sources predominate. There is an inset of Charlestown Harbor above the cartouche. The Van Keulen firm was a leading supplier of charts, instruments, and maritime related books of uncommon longevity. It remained a family controlled business until 1823 and then continued to operate under another owner until 1885. It highlights the vital shipping lanes between Cuba, at lower left, and the Yucatan. The finely engraved chart is oriented with north to the bottom and includes the island of Cozumel. Its place names are all in Spanish suggesting a Spanish source for this Dutch chart.

Oxford.- "In 1682 appeared the magnificent large folio, the fruit of Fell's long study of the Father whose stand against Rome and special theory of the episcopate gave him a unique appeal to Anglicans... The folio comprised all the saint's writings, copiously annotated by Fell, and a new Life, Annales Cyprianici, which was compiled by the greatest English patristic scholar of the age, John Pearson... Fell's apparatus is impressive; his collations numerous, his notes copius. The composition of the text is creditable to an English press; the paper is excellent and the presswork admirable... The book represents the greatest of Fell's contributions to patriotic scholarship and the exposition of the position of the Anglican Church."         CLAVASIUM VULGO CHIVASSO

Cyprian, Kirchenvater u. Bischof v. Karthago, kommentiert v. J. Fell, Erzbischof v. Oxford.- "In 1682 appeared the magnificent large folio, the fruit of Fell's long study of the Father whose stand against Rome and special theory of the episcopate gave him a unique appeal to Anglicans. The folio comprised all the saint's writings, copiously annotated by Fell, and a new Life, Annales Cyprianici, which was compiled by the greatest English patristic scholar of the age, John Pearson. Fell's apparatus is impressive; his collations numerous, his notes copius. The composition of the text is creditable to an English press; the paper is excellent and the presswork admirable. The book represents the greatest of Fell's contributions to patriotic scholarship and the exposition of the position of the Anglican Church."         The Medall a Satyre against Sedition . By the Authour of Absalom and Achitophel

London: Jacob Tonson, 1682. Small quarto, 32pp.; protected in modern wrapper. First edition, second issue: 'the second of Dryden's political satires'. The acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of treason for opposing the succession of the Catholic James was regarded as a great Whig victory. Flushed with success, they issued a medal, Shaftesbury's head on the obverse, the sun rising over the Tower of London on the reverse. It was the perfect prompt for Dryden's mock-heroic satire: 'Of all our Antick Sights, and Pageantry, Which English Ideots run in crowds to see, The Polish Medall bears the prize alone…'.

Small quarto, four parts in one volume (part 4 with separate pagination), engraved frontispiece by J. Luiken (dated 1683) and 16 plates (repairs to tears in two plates, one with insubstantial loss at bottom corner); a few upper margins a little short but a very good copy in full vellum antique. FINISHED. Dutch survivors on the west Australian coast. Very rare, the first fully illustrated edition of this seventeenth-century imaginary voyage to western Australia, based on the story of the wreck of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck in 1656. The plates are thus early - if imaginary - depictions of the Australian coast, and include two coastal scenes depicting the first meeting with the local population, the Australian court, and the fabulous fauna. The importance of the detailed and inventive illustrations has been overlooked: after the various editions of Pelsaert, this is the second major work to depict life and conditions on the Australian mainland, however fancifully. This work also has an important connection with Vlamingh's exceedingly rare Journaal wegens de Voyagie of 1701, as Vlamingh's very real voyage to Australia in 1696-7 only made it separately into print as a companion volume to the second Dutch edition of this imaginary work. The story is based on the 1656 wreck of the Vergulde Draeck, which ran aground on the coast north of modern-day Perth. Seventy-five of the crew and passengers made it ashore. The captain Pieter Albertsz despatched a crew of seven in a small boat to Batavia and a rescue expedition was mounted, but found no trace of the survivors; the possibility that some of the crew survived on mainland Australia was an enticing fiction. Vairasse openly used this real-life voyage as the model for his own, having the similarly named Goude Draak wreck in western Australia the same year as its namesake. After the ship founders, some seventy-four women and three hundred and seven men survive on the barren shore, from whence they journey to the land of the Sevarambes, an Australian utopia. The work, which also borrows features from the wreck of the Batavia, is one of the most important imaginary voyages to Terra Australis, and is cited as a direct influence on Swift. The book thus forms an important link in the long history of seventeenth-century Dutch exploration of the west Australian coast, not least because it dates from a time when the lines between imaginary and real voyages were blurred. This Dutch edition was translated by Gerard van Broekhuizen the same year as the French collected edition, and seemingly based on the French text. The frontispiece is by Jan Luyken, and the plates (four signed) by Johannes van den Aveele (or Avelen).

With 2 folding and 34 full-page engraved plates (1 with unnumbered figures and 35 with figures 1-43), showing diagrams and perspective views of geometrical figures and solids, rooms, a courtyard, staircases, furniture, buildings, interiors and gardens (of the prince of Orange), vaults, arches, galleries, a standing screw press for linens, a landscape with two figures, etc. 2 works in 1 volume. Small folio (30.5 x 20 cm). Early 18th-century overlapping sheepskin parchment (re-backed).

Ad 1: Cf. BAL 330-1 (1682 ed.); Berlin Kat. 2222-2223 (1657 ed. & ca. 1726/42 Ottens ed.); Fowler 54 (1686 Danckerts ed.); STCN (1 copy of 1694 Valk issue); WorldCat (2 copies of 1694 Valk issue); ad 2: Kemp, The science of art, pp. 111-112; New Hollstein, H. Hondius (1994), 259-294; Vagnetti EIIIb10; STCN (3 copies). Ad 1: Unrecorded 1694 issue, apparently the same edition as the 1694 Gerhard Valk issue, of a well-known and influential simple practical manual on the five orders of columns, written for the use of craftsmen by Symon Bosboom (1614-1662), Dutch architect and Amsterdam's official city stonemason ("stadts steen-houwer"). He discusses and extensively illustrates the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Composite (here called Roman) and Corinthian orders of column, along with doorways, arches, facades, etc., using them. Other illustrations show fireplaces, a church interior and exterior, geometrical diagrams, ornaments, etc.Bosboom had worked together with Jacob van Campen on the building of Amsterdam's new city hall, where he was responsible for the hundreds of capitals and column bases. Cornelis de Bie's Gulden Cabinet (Antwerp 1661) calls Bosboom the actual designer of the plastic details of the Amsterdam city hall.Ad 2: Rare Dutch edition, published by De Wit in 1697 and printed from the original plate of the 1622 first edition, of one of the most popular books on the art of perspective, by the engraver, publisher and expert on fortifications Henricus Hondius the elder (1573-1650). The book gives thorough review of the most famous earlier authors on perspective, including the founder of the genre Hans Vredeman de Vries. "The book provides a series of neatly conceived demonstrations of perspective in its abstract and applied forms and gives an original if brief analysis of the upwards convergence of tall verticals to a 'contre-poinct' when viewed with a plane tilted slightly toward the spectator" (Kemp, p. 112). The plates served also as models for subsequent authors: Joseph Moxon's Practical perspective (London 1670), for example, copies many of the present plates in mirror image. The Bosboom lacks 1 text leaf, but both works are otherwise in good condition, with some mostly marginal stains and some marginal restorations. The binding has been rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. Two 17th-century classics on architecture and perspective.
