// 2 volumes bound in 1 quarto (257 x 197 mm), speckled brown calf, spine tooled in gilt raised on five bands, dentelle on turns-in, sprinkled edges (contemporary binding). (Jacob, tome II, p. 151). Vaillant brought back from his travels a great amount of precious coins that made the "Cabinet du Roi" the first medals' collection of Europe. Ink handwritten ex-libris on first end-paper and title. (spine'extremeties used, with some lack of leather, rubbings on hinges and turns-in, light spots).

SADUCISMUS TRIUMPHATUS: OR, FULL AND PLAIN EVIDENCE CONCERNING WITCHES AND APPARITIONS. IN TWO PARTS. THE FIRST TREATING OF THEIR POSSIBILITY. THE SECOND OF THEIR REAL EXISTENCE

London: Printed by Tho. Newcomb, for S. Lownds..., 1682.. [18],52,[12],162,[6],78,blank leaf,[14],273,[1],67,[3],5-45,[17],24,[2]pp. with engraved frontis to each part, engraved plate at p. 23 of final part, and errata. Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt labels, to style. Tiny isolated wormhole in lower blank margin of text block, modest occasional tanning and a few isolated minor rust marks, otherwise a very good copy. A properly, and neatly, deaccessioned institutional duplicate, with tiny release stamp on verso of title and in blank portion of 3E2. One of two variants of this work denoted the "second edition," in this case conforming to ESTC R233939. Although the register is continuous, there are variations in the pagination of the constituent elements, as well in the imprint, distinguishing the two variants. Glanvill (1636-1680), who at an early age distinguished himself with THE VANITY OF DOGMATIZING (1661), was keenly interested in the phenomenon associated with witchcraft, and in 1667, published his initial work, PHILOSOPHICAL CONSIDERATIONS TOUCHING WITCHES AND WITCHCRAFT. Through subsequent expanded editions, under various titles, it grew from that 62pp. pamphlet to become one of the most widely known works on witchcraft of its times. The first edition of this title appeared in 1681, and this second edition (in both variants) is enhanced by additional prefatory matter, as well as added sections by Antony Horneck and Henry More. "Glanvill was a voluminous author. His style is often admirable, not unfrequently recalling that of Sir Thomas Browne. His intellect was versatile, active, and sympathetic, but he is rather rhetorical than logical. In his dislike to the scholastic philosophy he followed Bacon and the founders of the Royal Society. Though he was in this direction a thorough-going sceptic, he was opposed to the materialism of Hobbes. His defence of witchcraft was the natural result of an attempt to find an empirical ground for a belief in the supernatural, and he formed with Henry More a virtual association for ‘psychical research'" - DNB. This work exerted some influence on Mather, and on various witch frenzies during subsequent decades; its continuing fashionability can be measured, in a way, by its occasional occurrence among the real and imaginary texts cited by H.P. Lovecraft in his works. ESTC R233939. WING G823. CORNELL WITCHCRAFT 239. KEYNES (BIBLIOTHECA) 2353.

Dr.Henry More dated 1683) +173-276 +[4]pp catalogue of books printed for Lowndes. Lacks pp131-2 (leaf supplied in facsimile). Titlepage browned/dusty with old name Joh: Wetherby to margin, corners rounded, margins bit chipped, 2nd title with another name blank verso of previous page, marginal paper repair to dedication page not touching print, other signs of use and a few pages at the beginning and end have marginal damp marks. Several inscriptions on blanks facing later titlepages inc. ownership poem dated Dublin 1795. *Glanvill wrote several books on occult matters the most famous being "Saducismus Triumphatus .. evidence concerning Witches and Apparitions". Here he defends belief in the prior existence of souls and thus reincarnation, also tied in with belief in ghosts, but as a sceptic he seeks empirical proof. His views and Dr. Rust's are then defended in Henry More's Annotations, all 3 thus virtually forming an early society of psychical research.

An Accurate Map of the West Indies. Drawn from the Best Authorities, Assisted by the Most Approved Modern Maps and Charts, and Regulated by Astronomical Observations

      - This handsome map covers the southeastern United States, eastern Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and the northern part of South America. It is derived from Popple's important map of the region. The British colonies in North America are confined east of the Appalachians with France in control of Louisiana. Many early forts and Indian tribal territories are located. There are several interesting notations concerning the history of the region, such as a notation concerning the southern boundary of the Province of Carolina, "so that Fort St. Augustin as well as Georgia falls within these limits." Trade winds and sea routes are marked throughout, including the course of the Spanish gold fleet from Old Spain and the return trip from Cartagena and Vera Cruz. The title cartouche is adorned with Native Americans and an incongruous lion (likely representing the British colonies).Sharp impression and fine original color. Ref: Sellers & Van Ee #1682.

        Symbola heroica.

Amsterdam, apud Jansson-Vaesberge & H. Wetsten, 1682 - 4to. (8)pp + pp v - lxxx + 480pp + (32)pp. Engraved title-page by Corn. Galle after Peter Paul Rubens, frontispiece portrait of Cardinal Aloysius Carafa, 8 plates of arms and genealogies, 268 emblematic devices within scrollwork surround, 13 engraved figures in text, ornamental woodcut head- and tail-pieces and historiated initials. Bound in 19th century red morocco, spine richly gilt and inner dentelles, edges gilt (by R. Petit); joints and corners lightly rubbed. A collection of 264 emblems and devices formed by the Roman-born Jesuit. The work is divided into 9 books, depicting pictorial shields and devices with their mottoes, giving explanation of the symbolism. Heraldic badges of noble families and men of learning include the Medici, Gonzaga and Orsini. Illustrated are the significance of devices on coins and medals, ring inscriptions, seals and their uses, and forms of epigraphy; the author also explains methods of cryptic writing and numerology, the meaning and origin of emblematic images from myth, legend, nature and objects of everyday life, these often juxtaposed to provide a parable or exemplary interpretation. Of special interest is the device on page 146 which shows the magnetic clock of Father Francis Linus - the earliest recorded attempt to measure time by this means (see Physis 1969, p69). The frontispiece was engraved by Galle after a design by Rubens (now in the Institut Neerlandais, Paris; Collection Frits Lugt); the emblems were drawn by Andre Pauwels. The book was first published by Plantin in 1634; this is a re-issue of the original sheets with a new title-page added. A very good copy; a paper fault in blank margin of one leaf. Praz pp179, 455; Judson & Van de Velde, 'Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard: Book Illustrations and Title-pages', I, p289; Funck, 'Le livre belge a gravures', p379; Olschki, Choix, I, 353 (this copy - with bookseller's ticket inside frontcover).

1682 - A Paris, Chez Estienne Michallet, 1682. « Dechales's separate edition of Euclid, long a favorite in France and elsewhere on the Continent, never became popular in England » (SCHAAF, Biographical dictionary of mathematicians, I-576). PLAISANT EXEMPLAIRE en reliure d'époque. PLEASANT COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come: delivered under the similitude of a dream, wherein is discovered, the manner of his setting out, his dangerous journey, and safe arrival at the desired country.

London Printed fro Nathanael Ponder 1682 - The Most Well-Known Allegory Ever Written BUNYAN, John. The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come: delivered under the similitude of a dream, wherein is discovered, the manner of his setting out, his dangerous journey, and safe arrival at the desired country. London: Printed for Nathanael Ponder, 1682. The eighth edition. Twelvemo. [xii], 211, [1, 'Conclusion'], [4. publisher's ads] pp. Including frontispiece and two full page woodcuts. Early nineteenth-century blind-tooled sheep, spine blind-stamped in compartments and with gilt spine lettering, brown endpapers. Some wear to upper spine with a small crack. Marginal notes trimmed in a few places. Old rust mark to pp. 88-89. Some browning throughout. Overall, a very good copy of this very rare item. This is a genuine eighth edition. In the last thirty years there have only been two other Pilgrim's Progress published in 1682 to come up at auction and both of these were spurious with one claiming to be the 'Fifth edition' and the other the other the 'Ninth Edition". Harrison cites a New York Public Library catalog of 1929. which claims that the 'fifth' edition was not issued by Nathanael Ponder, and Sharrock records that the British Library copy of the same and that in the library of the Bunyan Meeting, Bedford, although bearing Ponder's name, "are totally unlike all other editions bearing his imprint." They are apparently printed in smaller type on inferior paper, with no shoulder noted. OCLC only records six copies of this actual 1682 (eighth) edition. The most well-known allegory ever written, this journey of the protaganist, Christian, is simultaneously filled with vivid and full human portraits of its characters. With over 100,000 copies sold in Bunyan’s lifetime, this "most perfect and complex of fairy tales" succeeded in attracting audiences from every Christian sect. Harrison pp. 39-40. Wing B-5568. According to Harrison there are only thirty-eight known copies of any complete edition prior to this one (of which OLCL locates six, of which three are imperfect); making this one of the forty-three earliest known copies and one of only four known complete copies of the eighth edition. Saducismus Triumphatus: or, Full and Plain Evidence Concerning Witches and Apparitions. In two parts. The first treating of their possibility. The second of their real existence. The second edition.

London, Thomas Newcomb, (1681-)1682. - 8vo. (18), 52, (12), 86, (2), 89-162, (6), 78 pp., 1 bl. f., (12), 273, (1), 67, (3), 5-45, (17), 20 (instead of 24) pp. (wants two final leaves of text, including an engraving on p. 23, as well as final errata leaf, all supplied in facsimile). With engr. frontispiece (Witch of Endor) and engr. six-piece title page. Contemp. calf (wanting rear cover). Second edition. - Joseph Glanvill's famous book on witchcraft, which first appeared posthumously in 1681. The editor is presumed to have been Henry More, who certainly contributed to the volume. This second edition is the first to include topical material on witchcraft in Sweden, supplied by Anthony Horneck (from a Dutch pamphlet of 1670). The book affirms the existence of witches with malign supernatural powers of magic, and attacks skepticism concerning their abilities. Glanvill likens these skeptics to the Sadducees, members of a Jewish sect from around the time of Jesus who were said to have denied the immortality of the soul. The book is also noted for the account of the "Drummer of Tedworth", an early poltergeist story. "Saducismus Triumphatus" strongly influenced Cotton Mather in his "Discourse on Witchcraft" (1689) and the notorious witch trials held in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692/93. Mather's "Wonders of the Invisible World" (1693) is largely modeled after this book and its reports, particularly the material relating to the Mora witch trial of 1669. - Some browning as usual. Spine severely damaged; wants back cover and final 3 ff. Wing (2nd ed.) G823. Cf. Yale, Alchemy II, 501, no. 141.

A Paris, Chez la Veuve Gervais Clouzier, 1682. - In-12° ; (6)-286 pp.-(1), plein veau brun, dos à nerfs orné, caissons or, fleurons or, titre or, tranches mouchetées rouge, rel. de l’époque, bel exemplaire.« Rarissime » (Turbet-Delof, 217).

Amsterdam 1682 - Superb hand color; lower margin extended with slight loss, else fine with strong impression on heavy paper. One of the earliest printed charts to specifically focus on the Carolina coast and one of the most attractive maps of the area overall. The chart extends from the Chesapeake Bay to northern Florida. While van Keulen used a variety of sources, not all of the identifiable, generally speaking, Spanish sources inform the more southerly areas, while in the northern part of the map, more accurate English sources predominate. There is an inset of Charlestown Harbor above the cartouche. The Van Keulen firm was a leading supplier of charts, instruments, and maritime related books of uncommon longevity. It remained a family controlled business until 1823 and then continued to operate under another owner until 1885. Oxford.- "In 1682 appeared the magnificent large folio, the fruit of Fell's long study of the Father whose stand against Rome and special theory of the episcopate gave him a unique appeal to Anglicans... The folio comprised all the saint's writings, copiously annotated by Fell, and a new Life, Annales Cyprianici, which was compiled by the greatest English patristic scholar of the age, John Pearson... Fell's apparatus is impressive; his collations numerous, his notes copius. The composition of the text is creditable to an English press; the paper is excellent and the presswork admirable...         CLAVASIUM VULGO CHIVASSO

John Fell). Accedunt annales Cyprianici, sive tredecim annorum, quibus S. Cyprianus inter Christianos versatus est, brevis historia chronologice delineata per Joannem Cestriensem (d.i. John Pearson). Oxford, Sheldon 1682. Fol. 4Bll., 14 (recte18)S., 28Bll., 72S. 244S. 240S. 40S.; 110S. 72S., mit gest. Frontispiz, gr. gest. Titelvign. u. 1 gest. Textvign., Prgt. d. Zt. mit Rtit.

      - Seltene Ausgabe der Werke des Hl. Cyprian, Kirchenvater u. Bischof v. Karthago, kommentiert v. J. Fell, Erzbischof v. Oxford.- "In 1682 appeared the magnificent large folio, the fruit of Fell's long study of the Father whose stand against Rome and special theory of the episcopate gave him a unique appeal to Anglicans. The folio comprised all the saint's writings, copiously annotated by Fell, and a new Life, Annales Cyprianici, which was compiled by the greatest English patristic scholar of the age, John Pearson. Fell's apparatus is impressive; his collations numerous, his notes copius. The composition of the text is creditable to an English press; the paper is excellent and the presswork admirable. The book represents the greatest of Fell's contributions to patriotic scholarship and the exposition of the position of the Anglican Church." (Stanley Morison, John Fell, the University Press and the 'Fell' Types, S.48-49.).- Frontispiz u. Titel verso gestempelt, tls. leicht gebräunt od. braunfleckig, sonst gutes Ex.

The Medall a Satyre against Sedition . By the Authour of Absalom and Achitophel

London: Jacob Tonson, 1682. Small quarto, 32pp.; protected in modern wrapper. First edition, second issue: 'the second of Dryden's political satires'. The acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of treason for opposing the succession of the Catholic James was regarded as a great Whig victory. Flushed with success, they issued a medal, Shaftesbury's head on the obverse, the sun rising over the Tower of London on the reverse. It was the perfect prompt for Dryden's mock-heroic satire: 'Of all our Antick Sights, and Pageantry, Which English Ideots run in crowds to see, The Polish Medall bears the prize alone…'.
