Greece: Amsterdam Visscher, Nicolaes , "in de Visscher, Klaverstraat" circa 1680. Copper engraved map of Greece and the Archipelago by Nicolaes Visscher. Original full wash colour; verso blank. The map shows the peninsular of Greece with the islands of the Archipelago in the Aegean sea; part of Asia minor to the right. Nicolaes Visscher, 1618-1679 Nicolaes Visscher took over the business of his late father Claes Janszoon Visscher in 1652, and went on to publish his "Atlas Contractus Orbis Terrarum " in 1657. He produced a number of world maps not just for the Atlas but also to be inserted in Bibles. The Visscher family were prominent Dutch map publishers for nearly a century. Claes Jansz Visscher ( 1587 - 1652 ) established the firm in Amsterdam near the offices of Pieter van den Keer and Jadocus Hondius. Many hypothesize that he may have been one of Hondius's pupils The first Visscher maps appear around 1620 and include numerous individual maps as well as an atlas compiled of maps by various cartographers including Visscher himself. Upon the death of Claes, the firmpassed to Nicholas Visscher I, and would, in turn, eventually be passed on to his son, Nicholas Visscher II. Most of the maps bearing the Visscher imprint were produced by these two men. Many Visscher maps also bear the imprint Piscator (a Latinized version of Visscher) and often feature the image of an elderly fisherman. Upon the death of Nicholas Visscher II, the business was carried on by the widowed Elizabeth Visscher until it was eventually sold to Peter Schenk. Zacharakis 3627/2350. Frederick de Wit [1630-1706] De Wit was one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam in the period following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson establishments, from which he acquired many copper plates when they were dispersed at auction. His output covered most aspects of map making: sea charts, world atlases, an atlas of the Netherlands, 'town books' covering plans of towns and cities in the Netherlands and Europe, and wall maps. His work, notable for the beauty of the engraving and colouring, was very popular and editions were issued many years after his death by Pieter Mortier and Covens and Mortier. Frederick de Wit was born Frederick Hendricksz or Frederick son of Hendrick.he moved from his home town of Gouda to Amsterdam in 1648 and by 1654 he had opened a printing office and shop under the name "De Drie Crabben" (the Three Crabs) which was also the name of his house on the Kalverstraat. In 1655, De Wit changed the name of his shop to the "Witte Pascaert" (the White Chart). Under this name De Wit and his firm became internationally known. Dating De Wit's atlases and maps is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years Koeman III: Wit 3 /23 Greece.         Iraklion and the Island of Crete "Candia; Insula Candia olim Creta N.Visscher excr

Greece: Amsterdam Visscher, Nicolaes , "in de Visscher, Klaverstraat" circa 1680. Copper engraved map of Crete with prospect of the Siege of Candia by Nicolaes Visscher. Black and white. This impressive plate has a prospect of the siege of Iraklion in the top half with key below in Dutch. Banner title to sky. The map in the lower half with decorative title cartouche. In 1644, the Knights of Malta attacked an Ottoman convoy on its way from Alexandria to Constantinople. They landed at Candia with the loot, which included part of the Sultan's harem, In response, 60,000 Ottoman troops led by Yussuf Pasha disembarked on Venetian Crete and occupied Chania & Rethimno. It took them 2 months each to capture the 2 cities Between 1645 and 1648, the Ottomans occupied the rest of the island and prepared to take the capital, Candia. The siege of Candia began in May 1648. The Ottomans spent three months laying siege to the city, cutting off the water supply, and disrupting Venice's sea lanes to the city. For the next 16 years, they would bombard the city to little effect. It would eventually be the longest siege in history. The view shows the bombardment of the city at the beginning of the siege, in the foreground the Maltese fleet is depicted engaged in battle with the Ottomans. Dark impression; evenly toned; some light foxing and spotting; short centre fold split at upper margin; short tear at lower margin repaired to verso; old ink number to verso. Nicolaes Visscher, 1618-1679 For nearly a century the members of the Visscher family were important art dealers and map publishers in Amsterdam . Founded by C. J.Visscher (1587-1652), the business was continued by his son N. Visscher ( 1618-1679), cartographer and publisher of Amsterdam and grandson Nicolas Visscher the Younger (1649 - 1702). Both of them issued a considerable number of atlases. The firm was continued after Nicolas II's death by his widow Elizabeth Visscher, who issued an Atlas Minor, Atlas Major and 'De Stoel des oorlogs'. In 1717 most of the plates passed into the hands of Petrus Schenk. Nicolaes Visscher took over the business of his late father Claes Janszoon Visscher in 1652, and went on to publish his "Atlas Contractus Orbis Terrarum " in 1657. He produced a number of world maps not just for the Atlas but also to be inserted in Bibles. The trademark of the Visschers was a fisherman, after their name (thus the Latin nickname Piscator). A small fisherman would be strategically placed somewhere near water. If the subject was a landscape without a stream or pond, then often a figure walking with a fishing rod can be seen. Their map plates were reused for a century by other printers who unknowingly copied the entire plates, including the tell-tale fishermen. Observant scholars are thus able to trace the provenance of bibles, maps, and landscapes from these signs. Zacharakis 3631/2353; Koeman Greece Crete Candia Seige of Iraklion

Epistles of OVID in English by John Dryden Mythology Trojan War Achilles

London : Printed for Jacob Tonson , 1680. - 1680 1st ed Epistles of OVID in English by John Dryden Mythology Trojan War Achilles EXTREMELY RARE 1st edition English / comp@$2,400 Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC – AD 17/18), known as Ovid in the English-speaking world, was a Roman poet best known for the Metamorphoses, a 15-book continuous mythological narrative written in the meter of epic, and for collections of love poetry in elegiac couplets, especially the Amores (“Love Affairs”) and Ars Amatoria (“Art of Love”). His poetry was much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and greatly influenced Western art and literature. The Metamorphoses remains one of the most important sources of classical mythology. John Dryden (1631 – 1700) was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Walter Scott called him “Glorious John.” We find this same book for sale elsewhere for more than $2,400!         A true and perfect narrative of the tryal and acquitment of Mr. John Satterthwayt, at the assizes held at Kingston, March 13. being accused for firing the house of Mr. Peter Delanoy, Dyer in Southwark. Written with his own hand, in a letter to his friend in London.

[London, 1679/80]. 1680 - Folio. 4pp. Disbound. Wing T 2537, L, OW, CF, HH, LNC; CH, CSS, MH, WF. Satterthwayt, a soldier and one of the King's guards, was committed to the Marshalsea on the evidence of one Margaret Clark, for setting fire to the house of Peter Delanoy a dyer of Southwark a fact which, he writes, has already been "made publick to the world, by our infallible, unerring, Protestant News-monger." In the event Margaret Clark was convicted and Satterthwayt acquitted of the crime. Since the text seems to have been written throughout by Satterthwayt it should perhaps be more properly listed in Wing under his name.
