Collison, Encyclopaedias: Their History, pp.103-104.First edition of the first modern encyclopaedia. Ephraim Chambers was born in 1680 and trained as a map-maker. Inspired by John Harris?s Lexicon Technicum 1704-1710, he set out to compile a more comprehensive work. Chambers is clearly the father of the modern encyclopaedia throughout the world and his book is remarkable for its elaborate system of cross-references and the inclusion of the humanities. The work is dedicated to King George II, and in recognition of his work Chambers was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1729. The influence of Chambers encyclopaedia has been incalculable, influencing Diderot?s Encyclopedie and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Almost every development in the world of encyclopaedia making is traceable to the pioneering example of Chamber?s work. This first edition is very rare.

The last Famous Siege of the City of Rochel: together with the Edict of Nantes

London: John Wickins,, 1680. Written by Peter Meruault, a Citizen of Rochel, who was in the City from the beginning of the Siege until the Rendition of it. Octavo (159 × 97 mm). Nineteenth-century tree calf, red morocco label, floral devices to the compartments, gilt panel to the boards, matching roll to the turn-ins, edges and endpapers marbled. A little rubbed, joints just started, slightly browned, some cropping of the shoulder-notes, a very good copy. Second English edition, one year after the first, an account first published in French in 1648. An uncommon and important narrative of the great siege of 1627-8, described by Kevin Robbins as "one of the best sources about daily events in the surrounded city" (City on the Ocean Sea … p223n). Also prints a translation of the full text of the Edict of Nantes as an appendix. Mervault was 20 at the time of the events that he records "and having been bred to commerce, wanted the advantage and ornament of Scholarship; yet nevertheless my curiosity prompting me, I made it my business to take notice of what then passed, and my Father being a Member of the Common Council, and as Master of the Artillery exercised the second Charge or Office in the City, I learned from him divers Particulars, which I carefully committed to writing" (author's preface). Robbins considers Mervault to be a "scrupulous antiquarian". Crested bookplate of A[lfred] J. Cipriaut to the front pastedown. f

        Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentionali

Amsterdam, 1680. No Binding. Near Fine. 18 1/8 x 22 3/8 inches. Fine original color; excellent. A particuarly handsome map portraying all the Caribbean islands, part of Mexico, Central America, Florida (called "Tegesta Prov.") and part of South America. Strangely, the area of present day Georgia and part of South Carolina is called French Florida ("Florida Galli"); the French colonies in the area had been obliterated a century before this map appeared. The map extends as far north as Delaware Bay. Putti adorn the cartouche in the upper right, while two nereids and a merman make sport of a perplexed ichthyocentaur (with the body of a man, the front legs of a horse and the tail of a fish). The engraving of the figures is uncommon quality.

A Mapp of the Isles of Iapon

      A. Goodbid and J. Playford, 1680. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand-coloring. Expertly restored and lined, margins missing. Image measures 14.25 x 20.75". This rare and unusual map of Japan features a graphic illustration of the islands with pictorial depictions of mountains and forts. An inset of Tunquin (North Vietnam) depicts the river system centered on Hanoi and the Gulf on Tonkin. The Sea of Korea and the country's tip can be seen below the inset. Moses Pitt, a British bookseller and publisher, released this English edition of Tavernier's original French map in 1680. The map has been intensively repaired and has some stains, but it remains a good copy of this hard-to-find map. Jean Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) was a famous French traveler who voyaged most extensively in India and Persia. His two volumes of "Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier" document his travels and commercial contacts. While he never made it to Japan, this scarce map evidences the wide range of contacts he made during his voyages.

BIBLE: A LEAF FROM A COPY OF THE FIRST BIBLE PRINTED IN AMERICA

1680. ELIOT, John. THE FIRST AMERICAN BIBLE: A leaf from a copy of the Bible translated into the Indian language by John Eliot. Presented with explanatory text by Wilma Corcoran, Zion Research Library Boston University. Cambridge, MA: S.Green and M.Johnson, 1680. Second editon. (17 years after the first.) Single leaf. New Testament, Book of John, part of Chapters 19 and 20 dealing with the death and resurrection of Christ. This leaf is presented with an explanatory text in a white folder. Eliot (1631-1690) known as "Missionary to the Indians" learned the Algonquin language and translated the entire Bible into this unwritten and now extinct tongue. "The exigencies of metre and rhyme, combined with the extraordinary length of words in the agglutinative language, must have rendered his task one of supreme difficulty: the result must be considered a veritable tour de force." [Darlow & Moule 6737] The bible was printed by Samuel Green with the help of James Printer, an Indian compositor and corrector of the press. A bit of browning and spotting with a few faint contemporary ink marks.
